• Database (MySQL) structuring: pros and cons of multiple tables

  I am collecting data and storing it MySQL, for: 75 variables 55 countries Each year I have, at this stage since I am building this tool created a single table, of variables / countries (storing 1 year worth of data). Next year (and for several years after that) a new set of data will be input for each country. There are therefore 3 variables in controlling data returned to a user reviewing all collected data. The general form of any query would be: Show me these specifics variables, for these specific countries, for these specific years. (Show me average age and weight, for USA and Canada, for 2012 and 2009, for example) My question is, it seems that I have two options for arranging this data: -Multiple tables where I create a table of country / variable for each year data is collected - Single table and simply add a column (field) for the year that data relates to. As far as I can tell I could make these database calls with either sructure, but is one more powerful / efficient / quicker, and why? Thanks for your consideration. It's a PDO / PHP interface if that is relevent.

• How can I order my entries by sum from a separate table?

  I am wondering how I can order posts in my PostController#index to display by a column total in a separate table. Here is how I have it set up. class Post < ActiveRecord::Base :has_many :votes end and Class Vote < ActiveRecord::Base :belongs_to :post end I user can either vote up or down a particular post. I know there are likely better ways to do what I am currently doing but looking for a fix given my current situation. When a user votes up a post, a value of 1 is passed to the Vote Table via a hidden field. When a user votes down a post a value of -1 is passed to the same column (names vote). I am wondering how I can display my posts in order of the sum of the vote column (in the vote table) for a particular post. Another way to say that is, if a particular post has a net vote sum of 5, I want that to appear above a post with a net vote sum of 4. I am assuming that I need to affect the PostController#index action in some fashion. But not sure how to do that.

  I am doing a lot of MS Excel interop i C# (Visual Studio 2012) using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel. It requires a lot of tiresome manual code to include Excel formulas, doing formatting of text and numbers, and making graphs. I would like it very much if any of you have some input on how I do the task better. I have been looking at Visual Studio Tools for Office, but I am uncertain on its functions. I get it is required to make Excel add-ins, but does it help doing Excel automation? I have desperately been trying to find information on working with Excel in Visual Studio 2012 using C#. I did found some good but short tutorials. However I really would like a book an the subject to learn the field more in depth regarding functionality and best practices. Searching Amazon with my limited knowlegde only gives me book on VSTO using older versions of Visual Studio. I would not like to use VBA. My applications use Excel mainly for visualizing compiled from different sources. I also to data processing where Excel is not required. Futhermore, I can write C# but not VB.

What is the best way to accomplish this. The functionality is similar to a asp:PlaceHolder but I want to add a couple more options as well as additional markup and the such. Also the child controls still need to be able to be accessed by the page.

• performance issue: difference between select s.* vs select *

  Recently I had some problem in performance of my query. The thing is described here: poor Hibernate select performance comparing to running directly - how debug? After long time of struggling, I've finally discovered that the query with select prefix like: select sth.* from Something as sth... Is 300x times slower then query started this way: select * from Something as sth.. Could somebody help me, and asnwer why is that so? Some external documents on this would be really useful. The table used for testing was: SALES_UNIT table contains some basic info abot sales unit node such as name and etc. The only association is to table SALES_UNIT_TYPE, as ManyToOne. The primary key is ID and field VALID_FROM_DTTM which is date. SALES_UNIT_RELATION contains relation PARENT-CHILD between sales unit nodes. Consists of SALES_UNIT_PARENT_ID, SALES_UNIT_CHILD_ID and VALID_TO_DTTM/VALID_FROM_DTTM. No association with any tables. The PK here is ..PARENT_ID, ..CHILD_ID and VALID_FROM_DTTM The actual query I've done was: select s.* from sales_unit s left join sales_unit_relation r on (s.sales_unit_id = r.sales_unit_child_id) where r.sales_unit_child_id is null select * from sales_unit s left join sales_unit_relation r on (s.sales_unit_id = r.sales_unit_child_id) where r.sales_unit_child_id is null Same query, both uses left join and only difference is with select.

• MySQL Query Where Column Like Column

  I'm working on a small project that involves grabbing a list of contacts which are stored for each group. Essentially, the database is set up so that each group has a primary and secondary contact stored as, unsurprisingly, Group.Primary and Group.Secondary. The objective is to pull every Primary and Secondary contact for each Group and display them in a sortable table. I have the sortable table all worked out, but I have come across a small problem. Each primary and secondary field can have more than one contact separated by a comma. For instance, if Primary contained 123,256 , it would need to pull both Contacts with IDs 123 and 256. I had intended to use a query formatted like this: SELECT * FROM Group G, Contacts C WHERE G.Primary LIKE %C.ID% OR G.Secondary LIKE %C.ID% so that I could just skip the comma part, but I can't seem to find a working query for this. My question to you is, am I just overlooking something here? Is there a simple query that would let me do this? Or am I better off getting the groups and contacts separately, and combine the two later. I think the former is a little easier to understand when read, which is a plus as this is a shared project, but if that is not possible I will do the latter. This code is simplified, but it gets the point across.

In fact, when ViewData["KeyForMyObject"] contains a string, int, or bool, myAction is able to retrieve the value. But, when it comes to objects, such as List, and dictionary, nothing happens. When I debug to check the local values, I see null for Type myObject in the MyMethod.   this is a problem i face lot of times when i am designing a new app i'll use a sample problem to explain this think i am writing simple game.so i want to hold a list of players. i have few options.. 1.use a static field in some class private static ArrayList<Player> players = new ArrayList<Integer>(); public Player getPlayer(int i){ return players.get(i); } but this a global state 2.or i can use a singleton class PlayerList{ private PlayerList instance; private PlayerList(){...} public PlayerList getInstance() { if(instance==null){ ... } return instance; } } but this is bad because it's a singleton 3.Dependency injection class Game { private PlayerList playerList; public Game(PlayerList list) { this.list = list; } public PlayerList getPlayerList() { return playerList; } } this seems good but it's not, if any object outside Game need to look at PlayerList (which is the usual case) i have to use one of the above methods to make the Game class available globally. so I just add another layer to the problem. didn't actually solve anything. what is the optimum solution ? (currently i use Singleton approach)

• Using Read-Only Fields in a C# WebBrowser

  I'm currently using a WebBrowser control in a C# WinForms application, and attempting to control some variability presented with this control. Basically, my users log in to a separate UI provided by my application, which then displays the WebBrowser control, navigates to a predetermined log-in URL, and then auto-fills the username and password fields on that page. However, in order to prevent unpredictable behavior in this WebBrowser control, I want to make these username and password text boxes read-only after they are auto-populated. Essentially, I want the user to see a browser page that has been filled out for them, and that cannot be edited. (This is so that any authentication errors can be handled by my application as opposed to the browser.) The code I'm currently using to populate the text fields and make them read only is as follows: webBrowser1.Document.GetElementById("username").InnerText = username; webBrowser1.Document.GetElementById("password").InnerText = password; webBrowser1.Document.GetElementById("username").Enabled = false; webBrowser1.Document.GetElementById("password").Enabled = false; Unfortunately, when I try to make the fields read-only, the authentication server acts like the password field was not filled out, and prompts the user to fill it out again after the "Submit" button is clicked. Is this expected behavior, and if so, what other methods can I try to prevent users from changing the credentials that the browser was auto-populated with?

• jQuery: How to use modifier keys on form submit?

  Say I have a form that looks like this: [ Animal name input field ] Add button If I type a name and hit enter, an animal with the given name is added to a table. Works fine. What I would like now is to call the current way of working "quick add" and add a new feature called "slow add", which I am not quite sure how to do. Basically what I want is that if for example the shift key is held down when enter or the button is clicked, I want the form submit method to do something slightly different. In my case I want it to open up a form where more details on the animal can be added before it is added to the table. Problem is I'm not quite sure how to do this. I have tried add a FireBug console.info(eventData) in my current submit function and I have found that the eventData contains an altKey, shiftKey and controlKey property, but they are always undefined even when I hold those keys down. So, does anyone know how I can do something special in my submit handler when certain modifier keys were pressed when the form was submitted?

• What is the meaning of @ModelAttribute annotation at method argument level?

  Spring 3 reference teaches us: When you place it on a method parameter, @ModelAttribute maps a model attribute to the specific, annotated method parameter I don't understand this magic spell, because i sure that model object's alias (key value if using ModelMap as return type) passed to the View after executing of the request handler method. Therefore when request handler method executes the model object's name can't be mapped to the method parameter. To solve this contradiction i went to stackoverflow and found this detailed example. The author of example said: // The "personAttribute" model has been passed to the controller from the JSP It seems, he is charmed by Spring reference... To dispel the charms i deployed his sample app in my environment and cruelly cut @ModelAttribute annotation from method MainController.saveEdit. As result the application works without any changes! So i conclude: the @ModelAttribute annotation is not needed to pass web form's field values to the argument's fields. Then i stuck to the question: what is the mean of @ModelAttribute annotation? If the only mean is to set alias for model object in View, then why this way better than explicitly adding of object to ModelMap?

What I need to do is identify which form so the data can be processed. Please suggest me best and optimized query for this. • NHibernate not dropping foreign key constraints.

  I'm new to NHibernate, so this is probably my mistake, but when I use: schema.Create(true, true); I get: SchemaExport [(null)]- There is already an object named 'XXX' in the database. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: There is already an object named 'XXX' in the database. I grabbed the SQL code nHibernate was using, ran it directly from MSSMS, and recieved similar errors. Looking into it, the generated code is not properly dropping the foreign key constraints. The drop looks like this: if exists (select 1 from sysobjects where id = OBJECT_ID(N'dbo[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]') AND parent_obj = OBJECT_ID('YYY')) alter table dbo.YYY drop constraint FK22212EAFBFE4C58 Doing a "select OBJECT_ID(N'dbo[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]')" I get null. If I take out the "dbo" (i.e. "select OBJECT_ID(N'[FK22212EAFBFE4C58]')") then the ID is returned. • jquery - DOM traversal question

  Hi, Basically what I have here is a button that adds a new list item to an unordered list. Within this list item is a dropdown box (.formSelector) that when changed triggers an ajax call to get the values for another dropdown box (.fieldSelector) in the same list item. The problem is on this line: $(this).closest(".fieldSelector").append( If I change it to $(".fieldSelector").append( the second box updates correctly. The problem with this is that when I have multiple list items it updates every dropdown box on the page with the class fieldSelector, which is undesirable. How can I traverse the DOM to just pick the fieldSelector in the current list item? Any help is greatly appreciated.   I wrote a program which tells you knight's movement (chess). For example if I wanted to know all possible moves, I'd input: possibilites("F4") and I'd get ['D3', 'D5', 'E2', 'E6', 'G2', 'G6', 'H3', 'H5'] as a result, ok I did that, next, I had to write a function in which you input two fields and if those fields are legal, you'd get True and if they're not you'd get False(I had to use the previous function). • JQuery Autocomplete Form Submission

  I have managed to implement the jQuery autocomplete plugin on my website but was wondering if it is possible to make the form auto-submit once the user selects an item from the search. I have the following set-up: HTML Form: <form class="quick_search" action="../include/search.php" method="post"> <input type="text" name="search" id="search" value="Search..."> </form> JavaScript: $().ready(function() { $("#search").autocomplete("../include/search.php", { width: 350, selectFirst: false }); }); I have also included the jQuery and Autoplugin scripts. The search.php file contains a list of the search options. At the moment, the search works correctly and I just need it to submit the form once an item is selected from the list that appears. I tried to use the onClick and onSelect options within the search field but neither of these worked correctly. Any help would be much appreciated (I don't really understand js)! Thanks.

The effect I am trying to accomplish is to allow the enter key to call a click event of one a button while focus in within the current field. • How do I sort an activerecord result set on a i18n translated column?

  Hi, I have the following line in a view: <%= f.select(:province_id, options_from_collection_for_select(Province.find(:all, :conditions => { :country_id => @property.country_id }, :order => "provinces.name ASC"), :id, :name) %> In the province model I have the following: def name I18n.t(super) end Problem is that the :name field is translated (through the province model) and that the ordering is done by activerecord on the english name. The non-english result set can be wrongly sorted this way. We have a province in Belgium called 'Oost-Vlaanderen'. In english that is 'East-Flanders". Not good for sorting:) I need something like this, but it does not work: <%= f.select(:province_id, options_from_collection_for_select(Province.find(:all, :conditions => { :country_id => @property.country_id }, :order => "provinces.I18n.t(name) ASC"), :id, :name) %> What would be the best approach to solve this? As you may have noticed, my coding knowledge is very limited, sorry for that.

  I was a classic asp developer in 2000. After a year of full-time employment, I left the field. I found a part-time position as an asp developer again in 2005 and taught myself vb.net. In 2007, I got the current full-time job as an Asp.net web developer. I taught myself C#, LING t0 SQL, Web Services, AJAX, and creating all kinds of reports with reporting services. One and half years ago, I sent myself to part-time graduate program in Database and Web Systems. I'll have two semesters to go and so far my GPA is 4.0/4.0. My job responsibility is to collect business requirements from other departments, design the database, write stored procedures, create aspx pages, and create reports. I love what I do and want to advance my career to the next level. What I enjoy most is to design the relational database. I would want to become an .Net Architect eventually. I got an interview. They were looking for asp.net web developer. But I was surprised and disappointed that position would only create aspx pages. I would not even have opportunity to write stored procedures, let alone design the database (those would be provided by another group). Furthermore, they asked me some detailed questions about web forms, some of which I did not know the answers. they might be disappointed as well. I am eager to learn and can apply what I learn to real projects right away. I believe no matter what specific skills I am lacking for a new position, I can catch up quickly. I am looking for $70k range job. The object in my resume is Experience C# Web Application Developer. Due to the experience from last interview, I wonder if the object is really what I want.   I have the following scenario: I have a view in an Oracle server and all Iwant is to show that view in a web browser, along with an input field or two for basic filtering. No users, no authentication, just this view maybe with a column or two linking to a second page for master detail viewing. The children are just string descriptions of the columns of the master that contain IDs. No inserts or updates. The question is which is the JAVA based web framework of choice that can accomplish the above in the minimum amount of code lines code time(subjective but also kind of objective if someone has expirience with more than one or two frameworks) configuration effort deployment effort and requirements. dependencies and mem footprint Also: 6. Oracle APEX is not an option. 3,4 and 5 are maybe the same in the sense that they are everything except the functionality coding. I want something that I can compile, deploy by just FTPing to the database host, run and forget. (e.g. For the deployment aspect, Hudson way comes in mind (java -jar hudson.war and that's all)). Also: 3,4 have priority over 1 and 2. (Explanation with a rant: I dont mind coding a lot as long as it is application code and not "why the fuck do we still use javascript over http for everything" code) Thanks.

  Say I somehow got an object reference from an other class: Object myObj = anObject; Now I can get the class of this object: Class objClass = myObj.getClass(); Now, I can get all constructors of this class: Constructor[] constructors = objClass.getConstructors(); Now, I can loop every constructor: if (constructors.length > 0) { for (int i = 0; i < constructors.length; i++) { System.out.println(constructors[i]); } } This is already giving me a good summary of the constructor, for example a constructor public Test(String paramName) is shown as public Test(java.lang.String) Instead of giving me the class type however, I want to get the name of the parameter.. in this case "paramName". How would I do that? I tried the following without success: if (constructors.length > 0) { for (int iCon = 0; iCon < constructors.length; iCon++) { Class[] params = constructors[iCon].getParameterTypes(); if (params.length > 0) { for (int iPar = 0; iPar < params.length; iPar++) { Field fields[] = params[iPar].getDeclaredFields(); for (int iFields = 0; iFields < fields.length; iFields++) { String fieldName = fields[i].getName(); System.out.println(fieldName); } } } } } Unfortunately, this is not giving me the expected result. • Best method to search heriarachal data

  I'm looking at building a facility which allows querying for data with hierarchical filtering. I have a few ideas how I'm going to go about it but was wondering if there are any recommendations or suggestions that might be more efficient. As an example imagine that a user is searching for a job. The job areas would be as follows. 1: Scotland 2: --- West Central 3: ------ Glasgow 4: ------ Etc 5: --- North East 6: ------ Ayrshire 7: ------ Etc A user can search specific (ie Glasgow) or in a larger area (ie Scotland). The two approaches I am considering are 1: keep a note of children in the database for each record (ie cat 1 would have 2, 3, 4 in its children field) and query against that record with a SELECT * FROM Jobs WHERE Category IN Areas.childrenField. 2: Use a recursive function to find all results who have a relation to the selected area The problems I see from both are 1: holding this data in the db will mean having to keep track of all changes to structure 2: Recursion is slow and inefficent Any ideas, suggestion or recommendations on the best approach? I'm using C# ASP.NET with MSSQL 2005 DB.
