  Let's say you have an MVVM CRM application. You have a number of customer objects in memory, through a repository. What would be the appropriate place to handle tasks that aren't associated with traditional MVVM tasks from a GUI? For example, let's say every few minutes you want to check to see if their address is valid and pop up a notification if it is not. Or you want to send out an hourly e-mail update. Or you want a window to pop up to remind you to call a customer at a specific time. Where does this logic go? It's not GUI/action-oriented, and it's not logic that would be appropriate for a repository, I think.

  I got a paint function that works using a Cairo context and the end result should be a GtkImage (without intermediate image creation). I tried to use the gdk_cairo_create function but this code: ... • Properties.Settings.Default.Default.Save() does not work

  I have created code in WPF to let the window remember its last location like this: private void Window_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { try { Rect storedLoc = Properties.Settings.Default.WindowSavedLocation; this.Top = storedLoc.Top; this.Left = storedLoc.Left; } catch { MessageBox.Show("No settings stored !"); } } private void Window_Closed(object sender, EventArgs e) { Properties.Settings.Default.WindowSavedLocation = RestoreBounds; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); } When I build the application I can see that the app.exe.config file has the setting WindowSavedLocation but it just does not save and throws no exception. Everytime I run the application, it says "No settings stored !". It's scope is user.

• "Use windows xp style dpi scaling" disables automatic auto-hide of taskbar on W7. Workaround?

  We noticed that on W7 with DPI set to 125% or to 100% with ("Use windows xp style dpi scaling") turned off, our fullscreen mode (which sets the client rect of our window = desktop rect of the main monitor) no longer hides the task bar like it does for other settings. (The setting can be found in the Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display section after clicking on the "Set custom text size (DPI)" link) I found the following interesting article: http://www.mathies.com/weblog/?p=908 So I set out to try to work around the bug in other means than manually hiding/restoring the taskbar visibility but so far I've failed and currently believe it's a bug in W7 (and possibly vista). The following applications also fail to work properly in fullscreen mode (the taskbar is still visible): * Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 * Microsoft Word 2007 * Adobe Reader 9.1.3 These apps work (probably by hiding the task bar through the WIN32 API): * Powerpoint Slide Show I also tried creating a brand new MFC-based app and use its "SetFullScreenMode()" functionality but it fails in the same way as all other apps on the list.   Hello, just a quickie (or maybe not:] ): Is it possible to get somehow list of running applications/processes and, while running in background, check which process is active? Additionally - if somehow, the answer was yes, is it possible to react for change of active window / application react just as if it was Event, or bind to it custom event (e.g. Event.SystemActiveAppChange)? Thank you for answers as well as pointers. EDIT: Due to probable missunderstanding, I mean local applications - on your win/mac/linux machine - I would like to (in process of learning of language) track what apps I use the most, make a little graph maybe? • How can I implement lazy loading on a page with 500+ images?

  I basically have a booking engine unit results page which must show 40 units and per each unit there's 1 large image of the first thumbnail and an X number of accompanying thumbnail images. I've been using the jquery lazy load plugin, but it's not thorough enough ( I'm invoking it on DOM Ready ), plus it doesn't really work in IE ( 50% of the clients use IE so it's a big issue ). What I think I really need to do is not really spit out the image but a fake element such as a span, and possibly modify my code such that if the user views the span, render it into an image element. <span src="/images/foo.gif"> The booking engine relies on JS so I think I might be forced to just rely on ajaxifying all the thumbnails and have event handlers on window scroll, etc in order for the page to be "usable" and load at an average time ( 2-3 seconds instead of 5-30s on high speed DSL/Cable ). I'd appreciate any examples or ideas.

• Floating Menu CSS/Javascript issues

  I'm new to all this so thanks for being patient. Ok so I'm building a site with a Floating Javascript menu. The original code is from: Jtricks Absolute Floating Menu Here's the issue: When viewing the site in a mobile browser, zooming in initially caused the floating javascript menu to leave the far left of the page and cover content on the page. I fixed this by locking it into a fixed width div on the left side of the page. Now the issue I have is, I don't want the fancy animation of the javascript. A simple CSS script for a fixed window is fine. The only issue is, everything I've tried has done the same "free floating" thing when zoomed in on mobile browsers and I can't seem to find a fix. Anyone have any ideas?

• Differing form size between XP and 7

  I am developing a C# WinForms app on my XP dev machine with Visual C# Express 2008. I set the form to have a size of my liking with Width and Height on the designer and all looks good. I also set these dimensions to the MaximumSize property. Deploying the app to another XP machine, and the app looks like it does on my dev. However, in testing the app on a Win7 machine, the form has both horizontal and vertical scrollbars applied. I assume that this is due to the changed non-client size of the form, as determined by Win7. I can resize the window, but I would like it to be displayed correctly to begin with. So, my question is: What is the best way to correctly maintain a form size client area across OS'es? Thanks all.

• How do I create a WPF Dropdown panel

  I'd like to create a dropdown panel in WPF the acts like a ComboBox/Expander hybrid. I'm currently using an Expander but it pushes the the controls underneath it down when it expands. I simply want it to act like a ComboBox and overlay it's dropdown. I've looked at using Popups but they don't move with the underlying window if it's moved. So, I've concluded that the closest control to my needs is a ComboBox with allows me to put a Grid or StackPanel into its dropdown area. Any ideas how to achieve this?

• First iPhone App View Position Problem

  I am closely following the instructions given in the tutorial "Your First iPhone Application" on apple ADC. In the interface builder, I have set up a button positioned on the top according to the Apple Interface Guidelines. It runs without trouble if I simulate the interface in IB. However, if I run the built app, I get what is shown here. If you look at the view clearly, you will see that the entire view has been shifted up. And the magnitude of the shift is exactly the height of the status bar. And that's why the there is blank space at the bottom of the window, which was white instead of red. I have tried turning on the "Simulated Interface Elements", but that doesn't work either. The problem persists on real devices as well. However, using the "Simulate Interface" from IB looks fine. • Want to set 'src' of script to my IP.

  I have a script that links to the server I am hosting (IP can change) usually I would just use for links: var url ='http://' + window.location.hostname + 'end of url'; But in this case it isnt appearing to be so easy. I have tried: (1) $('#scriptid').attr('src', url); as well as: (2) var script = document.createElement( 'script' ); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = url; $("#insert").append( script ); Now case (2) works loads the script runs the script. But when at the end of my script it hits the 'write data' it decides to replace the entire page with just the data. Any idea on how I can do this?

  I'm implementing a search service called SearchInsideOut. http://bit.ly/97SFyW This search service simply replaces web page results by full web pages (Yes, I used iframe). The problem I have to deal with is iframe-breaking pages. The promising solution I found is using onbeforeunload to let users decide whether to stay or leave my site. But this also creates another annoying behavior. When users click other links in my site, onbeforeunload will also be triggered. Fortunately, I could solve this case by placing window.onbeforeunload=null in the onclick event of those links of my site. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to detect external events like clicking "refresh/back" buttons. What should I do to solve this difficulty? All suggestions and comments are highly appreciated.

• Developing and deploying games for Windows, Mac (& Linux)

  I want to write games that run on all the major platforms. I also want people to be able to play them by downloading a file and double clicking it. That means a single .exe/.app file. I'm happy to use OpenGL directly for graphics. What I don't know how to do is show a window, handle mouse/keyboard input and play sounds in a cross-platform manner. I don't really mind what the underlying language is, as long as it isn't C++ or Java. C#, Ruby or Python would be preferable, in that order :) Please, SO, save me from having to write Flash games!

• $("body").scrollTop() doesn't update in safari

It works great in chrome, but in firefox, the variable scrollfactor, that is suppose to get the current scroll-position, doesn't update. ps, some people have this issue due to lack of correct doctype. • Cocoa touch - creating view template for iPad

  Hi, This is kinda a hard question to describe. I'm just starting to make an iPad app. Now with the amount of real estate I have, I'm planning to have different but similar "views" to populate the space. (might be easier to think a newspaper site, where many of the columns are similar) I would like to create a "view template" so I can reuse the view in the different spots. Is it possible to design the view template in Interface Builder? (meaning I design the UIView in Interface Builder and then somehow I can just do [window addSubview:viewController.viewTemplate1]; multiple times? If so how would I load that view template in the different places? If you know of an example code / tutorial that does something similar, that would work too. Thanks, Tee

  I’ve got the basics of a content rotator done, the only problem is it doesn’t loop itself back to the beginning and I cannot figure out why! I have my complaints but... you know ;) A few of my macros are taking quite a while to complete and I am looking for a way to track progress. I build a log file during most of my macro processes but I have not found a good way to report progress without pausing the process. Ex. MsgBox("Progress") Any way to access the output window or even better the VS status bar?

  I'm just starting to learn emacs (woohoo!) and I've been mucking around in my .emacs quite happily. Unfortunately, I don't know Lisp yet, so I'm having issues with the basics. I've already remapped a few keys until I fix my muscle memory: (global-set-key (kbd "<f9>") 'recompile) That's fine. But how can I tell a key to 'simulate pressing several keys'? For instance, I don't know, make <f1> do the same as C-u 2 C-x } (widen buffer by two chars). One way is to look up that C-x } calls shrink-window-horizontally, and do some sort of lambda thing. This is of course the neat and elegant way (how do you do this?). But surely there's a way to define <f1> to send the keystrokes C-u 2 C-x }?

• Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred in IIS

  I have installed IIS in my system (WINDOWS-XP). While i am seeing IIS window, the Default web site is in stop mode. when i am ready to start IIS. It shows "Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred" Finally, I discovered that its caused by Skype. It listens to port 80 for incoming call. Now, most of the time IIS starts before Skype starts. So IIS works but if you restart IIS or try to start IIS after Skype is started then you will get this error message. For this, I changed my Skype settings Skype File-> Options -> Connection Uncheck Use Port 80 as an alternative for incoming connections. But even though i am unable to start my IIS. Please help me some one.. Thanks.

• How can I get Text property to initialize to the objects name at design time?

  When you add a label to the form from the toolbox, its text defaults to the item's name (label1, label2, etc). How can I make this happen with a custom control? So far, I have the following, which allows me to change the text through the property window: private string _text; [BrowsableAttribute(true)] public override string Text { get { return _text; } set { _text = value; lblID.Text = _text; } } Apparently the above code works as is, but I'm not sure why. Does Text default to the object's name automatically? The question still stands for other properties which don't override Text.
