  In a new interview up on otn/java, titled “Java Champion Dick Wall on the Virtues of Scala (Part 2),” Dick Wall explains why, after a long career in programming exploring Lisp, C, C++, Python, and Java, he has finally settled on Scala as his language of choice. From the interview: “I was always on the lookout for a language that would give me both Python-like productivity and simplicity for just writing something and quickly having it work and that also offers strong performance, toolability, and type safety (all of which I like in Java). Scala is simply the first language that offers all those features in a package that suits me. Programming in Scala feels like programming in Python (if you can think it, you can do it), but with the benefit of having a compiler looking over your shoulder and telling you that you have the wrong type here or the wrong method name there.The final ‘aha!’ moment came about a year and a half ago. I had a quick task to complete, and I started writing it in Python (as I have for many years) but then realized that I could probably write it just as fast in Scala.   I'm developing a 2d survival shooter using Box2d extension and I've got some questions: I have two AnalogOnScreenControls. Their listeners modify both sprites and bodies. I receive TouchEventPool was exhausted and as their number grows the game crashes accidently. I've tried to put the modification of the bodies and sprites on the UpdateThread but that does not solve the problem. What could be the cause? I have a class that at the beginnig of the game loads all the textures. After I relaunch the game activity several times I receive Unable to find Phys Addr for and "green color" interface. But that doesn't happen if I clear the memory manually through the Task Manager before relaunch What could be the cause? I unload my atlas at the end of the game. The game sometimes crashes at start with NullPointerException in onResumeGame. The solution suggested is to set android:configChanges="orientation|screenSize" but my device is API 10 so it doesn't have screenSize property and orientation only does not seem to help, because the game starts in portrait mode at times (though landscape is set in the code)

• A (slight) Change of Focus

  When I started this blog in September 2009 I was working as a BizTalk developer for a financial institution based in the South West of England.  At the time I was developing using BizTalk Server 2004 and intended to use my blog to collate and share any useful information and experiences that I had using this version of BizTalk (and occasionally other technologies) in an effort to bring together as many useful details as I could in one place. Since then my circumstances have changed and I am no longer working in the financial industry using BizTalk 2004.  Instead I have recently started a new post in the logistics industry, in the North of England, as "IT Integration Manager".  The company I now work for has identified a need to boost their middleware/integration platform and have chosen BizTalk Server 2009 as their platform of choice; this is where I come in. To start with my role is to provide the expertise with BizTalk that they currently lack, design and direct the initial BizTalk 2009 implementation and act as lead developer on all pending BizTalk projects.  Following this it is my hope that we will be able to build on the initial BizTalk "proof of concept" and eventually implement a fully robust enterprise level BizTalk 2009 environment. As such, this blog is going to see a shift in focus from BizTalk 2004 to BizTalk 2009 and at least initially is likely to include posts on the design and installation of our BizTalk environment - assuming of course that I have the time to write them! The last post I made was the start of a chapter by chapter look at the book SOA Patterns with BizTalk Server 2009.  Due to my change of job I am currently "paused" half way through this book, and my lack of posts on the subject are directly as a result of the job move and the pending relocation of my family.  I am hoping to write about my overall opinion of this book sometime soon; so far it certainly looks like it will be a positive one. • How do I find out which process is eating up my bandwidth?

  I think I'm being the victim of a bug here. Sometimes while I'm working (I still don't know why), my network traffic goes up to 200 KB/s and stays that way, even tough I'm not doing anything internet-related. This sometimes happens to me with the CPU usage. When it does, I just run a top command to find out which process is responsible and then kill it. Problem is: I have no way of knowing which process is responsible for my high network usage. Both the resource monitor and the top command only tell me my total network usage, neither of them tells me process specific network info. Is there another command I can use to find out which process is getting out of hand? I've already tried killing all the obvious ones (firefox, update-manager, pidgin, etc) with no luck. So far, restarting the machine is the only way I found of getting rid of the issue. EDIT: (just to be clear) I've found questions here about monitoring total bandwidth usage, but, as I mentioned, that's not what I need. UPDATE: The command iftop gives results that disagree entirely with the information reported by System Monitor. While the latter claims there's high network traffic, the former claims there's barely 1 KB/s. Thanks

• virtual install from ISO not getting virtual kernel

  I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

• Black screen with thinkpad edge e525, AMD radeon HD before and after installation, plymouth?

  I have a new thinkpad edge e525 (which should work) and wanted to try ubuntu (first linux experience). With the ubuntu desktop-cd I had a blackscreen before installation, I could fix that with nomodeset. After the installation, when rebooting I got the black screen again. First I see some ubuntu colour with a green busted stripe. I have the same problem with the live boot, also tried mint live, the stripe gets pink. I installed xubuntu 64bit from an alternate cd and I didnt have problems until de reboot after the installation. Same problem, just a black screen with the green stripe than blackscreen. I tried several things: adding nomodeset to the bootmenu, but than I get: No connection to plymouth and it is stuck at checking the battery status. I tried to replace quiet splash with text. Didnt work either. actually one time I saw a blue booting image before that. I managed to get a root command though via the recovery boot. I didnt dare to just remove the plymouth package. Can I just delete plymouth or do I have to deinstall it as described in several ways. (Problem is, right now the notebook doesnt have a internet connection. And I dont know how to manage it with a usb stick?) Or do I have to install the AMD catalyst driver manually? (Again, how can I do that with an usb stick) I also tried this: Ubuntu hits a black screen after boot. Is there any solution without internet? And if I need internet which is the right one? Please explain step by step what I have to write and so on! Thank you! also tried: set gfxpayload=text and: just remove splash and adding vesafb.nonsense=1 to the grub editor, because I couldnt find it anywhere

• Can't install Skype on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

  I've tried many different ways: I downloaded the file on the Skype website, which returned me this error "Cannot install ia-32-libs" I followed this instructions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype and here is what I got: **W: Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/partner/Packages/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.191 80] W: Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/precise/partner/Packages/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.191 80] E: Some index files failed to download. • A Console Application or Windows Application in VS 2010 for Sharepoint 2010 : A common Error

  I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows  application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window.If you have missed while creating new Project Go to the Application tab of project properties and verify that .NET Framework Version 3.5 is select as the Target Framework. Now that you have selected the correct framework, will it work? Nope if the application is configured as x86 one it will not work. Sharepoint is a 64 Bit application and when you create a windows application to talk to Sharepoint it should also be a 64 Bit one. Go to Configuration Manager, Select x64. If x64 is not available select <New…> and in the New Solution Platform dialog box select x64 as the new platform copying settings from x86 and checking the Create new project platforms check box. This is not applicable if you are making a console application to talk to sharepoint with Client Object Model.

• Software Center empty "No usefulness from server" "no username in config file"

  I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.

Allegis Group is a $6+ billion company, offering a full range of specialized staffing and recruiting solutions to clients in a wide range of industries.   The company processes about 133,000 paychecks per week, every week of the year. With 300 offices around the world and the hefty task of managing HR and payroll, the PeopleSoft system at Allegis  is a mission-critical application. The firm is in the midst of a data center modernization initiative. Part of that project meant moving the company's PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR Modules as well as Custom Time & Expense module) to a converged infrastructure.     The company ran a proof of concept with four different converged architectures before deciding upon Exadata and Exalogic as the platform of choice.   Performance combined with High availability for running mission-critical payroll processes drove this decision.  During the testing on Exadata and Exalogic Allegis applied a particular (11-F) tax update in production environment. What job ran for roughly six hours completed in less than 1.5 hours. • Sorting objects before rendering

  I'm trying to implement a scene graph and in all the articles i've come across there is talk about object sorting. So you'd sort your objects by "material" for example. Now untill i sat down and started implementing it, i kind of took this for granted, because it made sense. But now i'm wondering what does sorting actually change? In my engine, i have a manager for UBOs, i use those to store data that'll be shared between programs, at the moment that only involves time, camera and projection matrices and lights (i'm not worrying about managing which lights affect which objects ATM). Now for each model i have to change the model to world matrix uniform, no sorting is going to change that. So is the jump from changing this matrix to also setting a material for each object that bad? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that each time you change something in the pipeline, it has to get flushed and that can cause performance issues. But for each drawing call i'm setting up a model to world matrix anyway, so what sense does it make to ever be concerned about this? BTW is there any information about whether changing a uniform and calling glBufferSubData is more (or less) expensive.

  As a software developer, I find a frequent need to create icons for my applications. Nothing has ever worked as well as IcoFX for this purpose. Unfortunately, the program is no longer free - but I still have the installer for an older version. My question is whether or not I can distribute copies of the installer. The license agreement contains the following pertinent clauses: 6. All redistributions of the Software's files must retain all copyright notices and web site addresses that are currently in place, and must include this list of conditions without modification. 7. None of the Software's files may be redistributed for profit or as part of another Software package without express written permission of the Author. 10. The Author reserves his rights to modify this agreement in the future. The first two clauses would seem to suggest that I can legally distribute verbatim copies of the installer but the last clause has me confused. If the author modifies the agreement and removes the ability to distribute copies, does it apply to my copy that I downloaded a while back?

• Reusing Web Forms across BPM Roles

  Recently Varsha(another BPM Product Manager) approached me with a requirement where she wanted to reuse same Web Form for different task activity.We both knew this is easily achievable.The human task outcomes can differ to distinguish the submission based on roles.Her requirement was slightly more than this, she wanted to hide some data based on the logged in user. If you have worked on Web Form rules, dynamically showing and hiding data is common requirement and easily achievable using Form Rules. In this case the challenge was accessing BPM role inside the Web Form. Although, will be addressing this requirement in future release she wanted a immediate solution(Aha, after all customers are not the only one's who can not wait). Thankfully we managed to come-up with a solution and I hope this will be helpful to larger audience. Solution has 3 steps : Step 1: We added a hidden attribute in our form (Role). The purpose of this attribute is just to store the current logged in user's role and we pass the value during data association. Step 2 : In your data association step, pass the role value based on the Swimlane Step 3 : Now use this hidden attribute value in your Web Form rule for dynamic behavior Detailed steps and sample can be downloaded from Java.net.

• Network connection fails when downloading data

  In the past few weeks, I've noticed my network connection becoming unstable while downloading files. I'm not sure how to diagnose this issue. I've found that my network connections appear to be temporarily unresponsive (for periods up to a minute or so) while I'm downloading a file (that's large enough to not be downloaded instantly). The problem occurs when downloading data through a webbrowser, but also when using SCP to download data from a remote location. During the period in which network connections are unresponsive, every resource that I try to access over the network is unavailable. This includes: The download itself (SCP reports a 'stalled' download) Web pages (won't load - browsers report 'resource unavailable') SSH sessions (CLI freezes) VPN connections (connections terminate) IM client connections (client starts reconnection attempts) ... (everything is pretty much dead) I've noticed that during such a period, I cannot even access the (web-based) administrative console of the router on my LAN at home (although it remains reachable for other devices). The problem occurs when connected to my home network, but also when I'm in the office. Other devices than my laptop are not affected. Given the above two characteristics I assume the problem cause lies within my laptop, not the network infrastructure. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Apart from applying automatic updates from Ubuntu, I can't think of a change that I applied to the OS that could have started the problems. I'm absolutely positive that this issue did not occur up to a few weeks ago (as it's very noticeable, and only started to annoy me in the last few days). When the problem occurs, applications that make use of a network connection fail visibly (I get popups telling me that a VPN connection is broken, for instance). The network manager does not report any issues related to my wifi-connection though. Help?

Instructables user Rybitski writes: The key to my apartment never worked quite right because it is a copy of a copy of a copy. I am fairly certain that the dead bolt is original to the building and the property manager seems to have lost the original key years ago. As a result unlocking the door was always a pain. Changing the lock wasn’t an option, but eliminating the need to use a key was. To that end, he built the device seen in the video above. • Routing tables don't show ppp0 after 12.04 kernel upgrade to 3.5.0: Haier CE682 modem configuration

  I'm trying to get my Haier CE682 EVDO modem, model number 201e:1022 to work in ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.5.0-030500-generic #201207211835 . I then added the default routing as shown above with sudo route add default gw 192.168.3.1 wlan0 So it seems I need to add or change the routing to show a ppp0 connection, but I don't know how to do that.

  I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss. I found this article that explained a few things and even has a nice code snippet, except that I'm not sure where to plug it. Thanks all
