• DirectSound affects system volume on WinXP

  Hello guys, I'm currently developing an audio engine that is used in voice network chat software. Everything is working fine - capture/playback/mixing channels. The problem is in using it under Windows XP. I've been getting user reports with information that their global system volume is set to zero after launching the application. I'm assuming that happens because of WaveOut/DSound conflict. How can I force DSound not to affect system volume? Playback device is initialized: DirectSoundCreate8(&GUID, &pAudio, NULL); and: pAudio-SetCooperativeLevel(parentWnd, DSSCL_PRIORITY); I'm currently not able to debug the application, cause I'm using Vista and everything is OK. • Generating Google Maps markers using Ruby

  I would like to do a very simple task: add some markers in a Google Map using a list of addresses from an array. I have been thinking about generating the Google Maps JavaScript API code using ruby (printf) but this does not seem like a very clean and beautiful solution... I have read about YM4R for Ruby on Rails... my project is pretty simple and I have never worked with Ruby on Rails... I have also never used JQuerry... but I am very willing to learn to use this tools :) What do you think will be the best approach to generating the markers?

• Web framework for an application utilizing existing database?

  A legacy web application written using PHP and utilizing MySql database needs to be rewritten completely. However, the existing database structure must not be changed at all. I'm looking for suggestions on which framework would be most suitable for this task? Language candidates are Python, PHP, Ruby and Java. According to many sources it might be challenging to utilize rails effectively with existing database. Also I have not found a way to automatically generate models out of the database. With Django it's very easy to generate models automatically. However I'd appreciate first hand experience on its suitability to work with legacy DBs. Also I appreciate suggestions of other frameworks worth considering.

  Hi, I am trying to extend Visual Studio 2010 RC to be able to use a custom programming language. The first two things I've tried to do is a syntax highlight/Intellisense feature (easily done, thanks to "Ook!" sample from PDC09) and a possibility to create new project templates (i.e. be able to open *.myproj files). For this second task, I can't find any easy tutorials or samples. Most samples are for Visual Studio 2008 (as for IronPython integration) or even VS2003. The few samples available for VS2010 do not work (including MPFProj) or do not compile, and are too hard to understand. Is there any easy-to-understand sample, either using MPFProj or a standalone solution, showing how to integrate templates for a custom language inside Visual Studio 2010?

  One of my friend is working on issue related to updating expired digital certificates. He is working on Java application(Swings I guess), which has 4000 clients. All those need a digital certificate to connect to the application and this certificate expires every year. At the end of year he needs to update the certificate credentials for all clients. Currently this is manual process, done by connecting to each of 4000 systems either locally or by remote connection. He is got task to convert this process to be an automated process.   I've been trying to convert my aspx pages to cshtml and having an issue with rendering partial pages from another folder. What I used to do: <% Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/InquiryList.ascx", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending));%> I would think that the equivalent would be: @Html.RenderPartial("~/Views/Inquiry/_InquiryList.cshtml", Model.InquiryList.OrderBy("InquiryId", MvcContrib.Sorting.SortDirection.Descending)) This is obviously not working, I am getting the following error. CS1973: 'System.Web.Mvc.HtmlHelper' has no applicable method named 'Partial' but appears to have an extension method by that name. Extension methods cannot be dynamically dispatched. Consider casting the dynamic arguments or calling the extension method without the extension method syntax. How would I achieve this with using the Razor view engine?

• Android: 2D. OpenGl or android.graphics?

  I'm working with my friend on our first Android game. Basic idea is that every frame the whole surface is redrawn (1 large bitmap) which then sprinkled all over with large number of particles which produces effect of soapy bubbles where there's a pool of about 20 bitmaps which randomly gets picked to produce illusion that all bubbles (between 200 - 300) are all different. The math engine is in C (JNI) and currently all drawing is done using android.graphics package very similar (since that was the example I was using) to Lunar Lander. It works but animation is somewhat jerky and I can feel by temperature of my phone that it is very busy. Will we benefit from switching to OpenGL? And as a bonus question: what would be a good way to optimize the drawing mechanism (Lunar Lander like) we have now?

Can anyone give me some light here? How can I improve this code?

• how to precompile sass with gruntjs?

  There seem to be a few plugins...and I'm using webstorm file watcher which also precompiles individual files. I think this may not be the best way to setup a watcher. I'm running this command now: sass --no-cache --update --stop-on-error --trace ./app/sass:./app/css It seems to conflict with the webstorm file watch, which appears to be appending everything to base.css. Can someone tell me what exactly this command is doing vs. a sass filewatcher in webstorm? What's the best way to work with sass: precompile my sass to css using a grunt build task and have file watchers while developing? • Core Location Best Placement and User Interruption

  Hi All, My application uses Core Location in three different views. It's working perfectly. In my first view, I subclass the CLLocationManager and use protocol methods for location updates to my calling class. Before I install the framework and code in my other classes, I was wondering: Is the protocol method the best way? What happens to the Core Location execution if the user exits the view or quits the app while it's trying to get a location fix? Is the location task terminated with the GPS system turned off immediately? If the user simply switches to another view, is it OK to assume that I can start Core Location in the next view without regard to the last? Where should the first update location call be placed. Should the application delegate instantiate the CLLocation Manager class using protocol so that it can update any of the views chosen or should each class instantiate the manager. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi, I've seen numerous answers to similar questions like this one. I haven't seen on the web many people have asked the seemingly simple question "How do I connect Access 2007 to an SQL server 2008 database" - but all of the answers describe how you can migrate from access 2007 to an sql server 2008 database, or they describe how to connect access 2007 to an sql server 2005 database. I can't find any simple solution to my problem (and probably this is a problem for many others). Here is the question (sorry for the over emphasis): How do I connect to an sql server 2008 database (and I mean 2008, not 2005 :) ) from access 2007? Apologies again for the over emphasis, but this very simple question, and what I thought should be a very simple task seems, yes, ... impossible! I tried running sql server browser, enabling pipes, TCP etc, but it seems that with 2008 SQLEXPRESS just isn't recognised! Please can someone help with this. Peter

• How to geocoding big number of addresses?

  I need to geocode, i.e. translate street address to latitude,longitude for ~8,000 street addresses. I am using both Yahoo and Google geocoding engines at http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder/, and found out that for a big number of addresses those engines (one of them or both) either could not perform geocoding (i.e.return latitude=0,longitude=0), or return wrong coordinates (incl. cases when Yahoo and Google give different results). What is the best way to handle this problem? Which engine is (usually) more accurate? I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, ideas from people who had previous experience with this kind of task.

• Static compilation in the .NET world

  I'll be writing a small desktop app for a client that has WinXP machines and they won't be installing the .NET framework (at least not for me). So my choices are limited to either C++ or VB6, neither of which sound great. I remember reading back in the day that Mono came up with a static compiler, but recently the only thing I could find is Miguel de Icaza's entry on static compilation for a game engine for the purposes of running the app on the iPhone - not what I had in mind. Are there any products out there, free or commercial that will allow me to statically compile my .net 3.5 winform app? Thanks

  hello, i want to learn rails and as a project to learn rails i came across webquests. what a webquest is is clearly written here1 and this is a example how a webquest look like. i started with script/generate nifty_scaffold introduction index and repeat this for every section like task , Process, Evaluation and so on. but i dont think thats the right way because i have a lot of code for the same thing. on the other side i am more flexible on designing views or controllers instead of having only one controller foer all pages. i am not asking here to get code. i am asking who to "build" such a backend where you can click on "New Webquest" a form comes up and you can enter all the text who belongs to the topic. maybee i can add some drawings later. i hope anyone can show me how to do that. or post me some links or some rtfms :D regards, buk

• Prototyping Object in Javascript breaks jQuery?

  I have added a simple .js to my page that has some pretty mundane common-task sort of functions added to the Object and Array prototypes. Through trial and error I've figured out that adding any function to Object.prototype, no matter it's name or what it does causes javascript errors in jQuery: The culprit? Object.prototype.foo = function() { /*do nothing and break jQuery*/ }; The error I'm getting line 1056 of jquery-1.3.2.js, in the attr:function { } declaration: /*Object doesn't support this property or method*/ name = name.replace(/-([a-z])/ig, function(all, letter) { return letter.toUpperCase(); }); Apparently G.replace is undefined. While it's obvious that there's something I'm just not wrapping my head around with prototyping, I'm failing miserably to figure out what it is. To be clear, I'm not looking for a workaround, I have that handled... what I'm looking for is an answer to 'Why?'. Why does adding a function to Object.prototype break this bit of code?

• When to use UserControl vs. Control in Silverlight?

  I'm just getting my feet wet in Silverlight, and don't really understand the differences and pros/cons of creating a UserControl vs. creating a Control for the same task (as in when you right click on a selection in Expression Blend, for instance). It seems like selecting "Make Into Control" just creates a new template for the base type you specify, whereas creating a UserControl creates a whole new base class. Is that correct? In this particular instance, I'm creating a custom text box control that only takes numbers, and divides itself into 3 sections, storing 3 values into separate properties as pictured below. In this particular case, which would be best? Update (Additional Question): Why can't I use Template Binding with a UserControl, but I can with a Control? That's one reason I thought that making a UserControl might not be the right decision.

  I have a 3rd party DLL that I am trying to use in a win32 C++ application. The DLL alone is all that I have. I believe this library is written in C and I assume is not exposed to COM. Is LoadLibrary() the function must commonly used for this task in Windows? If so can someone provide me with an example of how it is used?   I'm experimenting with a DOS batch file to perform a simple operation which requires the user to enter a non-negative integer. I'm using simple batch-file techniques to get user input: @ECHO OFF SET /P UserInput=Please Enter a Number: The user can enter any text they want here, so I would like to add some routine to make sure what the user entered was a valid number. That is... they entered at least one character, and every character is a number from 0 to 9. I'd like something I can feed the UserInput into. At the end of the routine would be like an if/then that would run different statements based on whether or not it was actually a valid number. I've experimented with loops and substrings and such, but my knowledge and understanding is still slim... so any help would be appreciated. I could build an executable, and I know there are nicer ways to do things than batch files, but at least for this task I'm trying to keep it simple by using a batch file.
