• How difficult it is to develope Apps for Android and iOS? [on hold]

  I'm an experienced web developer in PHP, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, CSS and I'm running communities where people can register to be able to login and do some stuff. Now more and more people are requestion an App, I told them that I have no time and experience to develope Apps with many functions for such complex communities I am running, but then the users told me what would be enough for them and this sounds already simpler to me: An app to install on Android / iOS just to be able to login (+ autologin), so they appear always online in the community when they have internet connection. Then only 1 function like a counter of new activities regarding their user account (new messages, new replies, etc..), and if they click on the app then a browser window will open to read the info at the main website. So, what you think, it will be a big thing to develope such an app for the members? Is there a big diffrence between developing for Android and iOS? How to test the App if you don't have an Android or iOS phone in example?

• Is there a (free) reliable place to get statistics from sites, more reliable than Alexa, Quantcast, Compete?

  I mean, seems there's no way. I am just asking in case someone knows of a recent new site being more accurate. I am aware of Alexa's, Compete and Quantcast inaccuracies and/or limited system/range of sites to get their stats. I also know about websitegrader perhaps being a little more accurate (although not sure if that's the data I am after). And read Seomoz tools are reliable. I am yet though looking for a free solution, a 'reliable' Alexa. And not a place depending on a toolbar installation, an easy to trick place, or one with stats way too off, or of a very limited range of sites. I am almost sure there's nothing new, but I wanted to be sure.

• CS4326/7 sound chipset on Thinkpad 600E

  OK, I know this has been a problem for a while, and I know by now this really old Pentium II laptop is really really really obsolete. However, I have installed Lubuntu 10.10 on this laptop and things seem to work fine except the sound. Now I've read and gone through a bunch of tutorials and guides to working around this, none of which have worked. I have gone through this Ubuntu bug report and that doesn't work either. The problem I think is that the latest workaround is (understandably) about two Ubuntu versions behind. Now I'm not sure what has changed since then to make that workaround not work, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks

• Parsing glGetShaderInfoLog() to get error info. Is this reliable, or is there a better way?

  I want to get a list of errors and their line numbers so I can display the error information different to how it's formatted in the error string, and also show the line in error. It looks easy enough to just parse the result of glGetShaderInfoLog(), look for "ERROR:" then read the next number up to : and then the next, and then the error description up to the next newline. But the OpenGL docs say "Application developers should not expect different OpenGL implementations to produce identical information logs." Which makes me worry that my code may behave incorrectly on different systems. I don't need them to be identical, I just need them to follow the same format. So is there a better way to get a list of errors with line number separate, is it safe to assume that they'll always follow the "ERROR: 0:123:" format, or is there simply no reliable way to do this? • No options for sound output

  Newbie here. Trying out Ubuntu for kicks. I have a 10.04 Ubuntu system dual booting on my Windows 7 laptop, fully updated, an Asus A53S. I have an external Samsung monitor/tv hooked up via HDMI. I'm getting sound from the external monitor fine when using Win7 but can't get anything with Ubuntu. I've read threads here about similar stuff and they say go check my sound options but I don't have any additional options than the one listed - Internal Audio. What else can I check/do?

• What is the aim of software testing?

  Having read many books, there is a basic contradiction: Some say, "the goal of testing is to find bugs" while other say "the goal of the testing is to equalize the quality of the product", meaning that bugs are its by-products. I would also agree that if testing would be aimed primarily on a bug hunt, who would do the actual verification and actually provided the information, that the software is ready? Even e.g. Kaner changed his original definiton of testing goal from bug hunting to quality assesement provision but I still cannot see the clear difference. I percieve both as equally important. I can verify software by its specification to make sure it works and in that case, bugs found are just by products. But also I perform tests just to brake things. Also what definition is more accurate?

• Color distortion with Intel HD4000 over HDMI output - VGA is fine

  I set up a new system with i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h using integrated graphics (HD4000) and I've installed the 64bit Desktop version of 12.04. Connected to my Acer Screen via HDMI, the colors are horribly distorted. I think the biggest issue is that black appears as greenish. Over VGA everything is fine. Interestingly, I once observed that connecting both, the VGA and the HDMI cable at the same time, solved the issue. Ubuntu thought 2 screens were connected, I mirrored the image, and over HDMI the colors looked fine. However, after a reboot I am now unable to reproduce this behavior. I read frequently, that Intel hardware should be supported out of the box by Ubuntu but it doesn't seem to be the case here. Should I upgrade my Kernel? If so, which version would you recommend? • Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

  Say you are using C/SDL for a 2D game project. It's often the case that people use a structure to represent a frame in an animation. The struct consists of an image and how much time the frame is supposed to be visible. Is this data sufficient to represent somewhat complex animatio? Is it a good idea to separate animation management code and animation data? Can somebody provide a link to animations tutorials that store animations in a file and retrieve them when needed. I read this in a book (AI game programming wisdom) but would like to see a real implementation.

• Can't boot ubuntu on Lenovo V570

  I recently tried to install Ubuntu on my new Lenovo V570, planning to dual boot 11.10 with Windows 7. I realized after installing that it would boot straight into Windows, so I looked up the issue. I read something about UEFI, and found a page suggesting that I wipe the drive with GParted, installing a msdos partition table, and then install Ubuntu. (I tried linux mint first, because that's what I had on my flash drive at the moment.) I attempted this, and now I'm left with a computer that won't boot anything from the hard drive. If I install Ubuntu or Linux Mint 12 using either MSDOS or GPT, it simply skips the hard drive. My BIOS has no option to disable EFI, and I'll admit I know shamefully little about EFI or different types of partition tables. I'd like to know what I have to do to make my computer boot again.

  Situation: I've some scripts that simulate user-activity on desktop. Therefore I've defined a few cases (workflows) and implemented them in Python. I've also written some classes for interacting with the users' software (e.g. web browser etc.). Problem: I'm a total beginner in software design / architecture (coding isn't a problem). How could I structure what I described above? Providing a library which contains all the workflows as functions, or a separate class/module etc. for each workflow? I want to keep the the workflows simple. The complexity should be hidden in the classes for interacting with the users' software. • Is there an AIR native extension to use GameCenter APIs for turn-based games?

  I'm planning a turn based game using the iOS 5 GameCenter (GameKit) turn-based functions. Ideally I would program the game with AIR (I'm a Flash dev), but so far I can't seem to find any already available native extension that offers that (only basic GameCenter functions), so my questions are: Does anyone know if that already exists? And secondly how complex a task would it be to create an extension that does that? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of etc.? ** UPDATE ** There does not seem a solution to the above from Adobe. For anyone who is interested check out the Adobe Gaming SDK. It contains a Game Center ANE which I've read contains options for multiplayer but not turn-based multiplayer, at least it's a start. Comes a bit late for me as I've already learned Obj-c!

• Installing RVM on 11.10

  I have been trying to get RVM properly installed on my system for 10 hours. The problem is, that when ever I run the command to download the install script I get this: edu@edu-VirtualBox:~$ bash -s stable < <(curl -s https://raw.github.com/wayneeseguin/rvm/master/binscripts/rvm-installer) mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/share/ruby-rvm': Permission denied If I run the command with sudo, I can get it installed, but then that leads to a whole host of other issues. Every tutorial I read says that you should not be installing rvm with sudo for a single user install. Why can I seem to get it installed without running sudo?

  I'm currently using godaddy for all of my company domains, and I'm very unsatisfied with their service, specially with their site, so we are trying to migrate those domains to another provider. The question is, How do I transfer my domains to another domain registrar? I'm not talking about transferring domain records (A, MX...) but to use the same domains with another provider, and redo all the configuration again. For example, one of our blogs is hosted in Slicehost and we feel very confortable with their record editing tool. • (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

• Files don't sync with U1.

  I am running 10.1 (all current updates have been installed) and I'm unable to sync any files to U1. U1 shows my computer as being added to my account and I bought enough space to hold all the files I want backed up, but for some reason it still doesn't sync. I have marked the files to be synced and even checked the devices tab in the U1 preferences; it shows my computer as being part of my account but the connect button is inoperable and restart doesn't produce any effect when clicked. I have read all the FAQ I can find relating to my problem and have tried all the suggestions that seem to adress problems similar to mine, as well as adding and removing my computer from my account a bunch of times. None of these produced any effect one way or another. I'm not very techno savvy so step by step and/or lay mens terms are greatly appreciated, Thank you

• Failed GRUB after 10.04 to 12.04 upgrade in system with LVM

  I am using Ubuntu Server as a SMB server at work and two days ago I have tried to upgrade it to 12.04. After reboot, I got this grub_xput missing grub rescue> and all attempts to start from this prompt failed (missing components, although grub directory is normally set as prefix). My system sits and boots on an LVM (soft raid-5). I have read almost all posts in many forums, tried grub rescue, boot-repair, ubuntu-secure-remix with boot-repair but without positive result. This is the log of my last (and best so far) attempt to fix this system. Any suggestions? Please help.

• Does an incomplete update affect my programs?

  I saw a pop up which said 'updates are available' so I clicked it. I completely forgot that the installation was incomplete, I logged off. NOw when I came back, it told me to do a partial update. I read the internet for information, partial update wasn't the safest thing for me. I tried to log in to skype, it said another skype may exist. That wasn't true, Skype wasn't opened. • Why dd is not a reliable command to write bootable .iso files to USB thumb drive?

  As the answers here indicate Ubuntu .iso s are not expected to boot if copied with dd to a USB thumb drive. Now my question is why is so that some Linux distributions have the option to directly write their bootable .iso file to a thumb drive with dd but some (read Ubuntu) have not(for Ubuntu I think it has to be converted to .img first). Is it for some architectural difference in .isos? Or is it due to any limitation of dd itself?I don't know if it is off-topic here. I can move it to a more proper place if the community thinks so or suggests one. Some explanation would be appreciable.
