• Security in Robots and Automated Systems

  Alex Dropplinger posted a Freescale blog on Securing Robotics and Automated Systems where she asks the question,“How should we secure robotics and automated systems?”.My first thought on this was duh, make sure your robot is running Java. Java's built-in services for authentication, authorization, encryption/confidentiality, and the like can be leveraged and benefit robotic or autonomous implementations. Leveraging these built-in services and pluggable encryption models of Java makes adding security to an exist bot implementation much easier. But then I thought I should ask an expert on robotics so I fired the question off to Paul Perrone of Perrone Robotics. Paul's build automated vehicles and other forms of embedded devices like auto monitoring of commercial vehicles on highways.He says that most of the works that robots do now are autonomous so it isn't a problem in the short term. But long term projects like collision avoidance technology in automobiles are going to require it.Some of the work he's doing with his Java-based MAX, set of software building blocks containing a wide range of low level and higher level software modules that developers can use to build simple to complex robot and automation applications faster and cheaper, already provide some support for JAUS compliance and because their based on Java, access to standards based security APIs.But, as Paul explained to me, "the bottom line is…it depends on the criticality level of the bot, it's network connectivity, and whether or not a standards compliance is required."

• Canadian English on Apple products

  Apple is an American company. As many of you probably know, Canadian English is different from American English, and closer to British English (e.g. colour instead of color). I use iWork and Microsoft Office for Mac (along with many other applications on OS X), and OS X, nor my iPhone, have an option to switch to Canadian English. Yes, you can select Canadian English as an input language in the language bar, but any program that uses the central OS X spell checking (from Mail to Office to iWork to Chrome) will check words against an American English dictionary. I know asking a question that involves an iPhone component is borderline off-topic, but I know on my iPhone I can select British English, but that turns my $ into £ and has a few other weird spelling quirks. Simple question: Is it possible to make OS X (and maybe the iPhone) use a Canadian English dictionary for its spell checking? Because British English just doesn't cut it anymore. Thanks!

  I am not completely sure if this is the right place to put this question, but since it's the programming thread I guessed that there's many experienced programmers here. :) Ok, hello! My name is Andreas and I am a 16 years old guy from Norway. For some time now I've wanted to learn a programming language. Six months ago I started learning C++, but quit withing a week due to lack of motivation. The same thing happend only 2 months ago when I tried to learn Lua. I wanted to program mods to the game Garry's mod, and was really motivated. Then I stopped playing the game, and the programming stopped with it. Today though I am ready again. The only difference is that I am not completely sure what I want to do with the language. I only want to create something, and I miss the progress of failing and enduring hard work until I finally solve the problem I've worked on for hours. What I am trying to say is; Is there any program out there that allows me, a complete noob (I didn't learn that much in a week, so I like to call myself a beginner), to create apps, mods or something similar but at the same time being qualified as a first time language? I was thinking of Java, because Android, Minecraft and many other applications and games use it. But I've heard that it is going to be replaced by a program called HTML 5 (whatever that is), is this true? I certainly don't want to spend many hours of my life on something that is useless in a year or two. Hopefully I didn't make this too complicated. I know that it is hard to recommend something when I don't have a goal, but I really don't know what to say. • How does a CS student negotiate in/after a job interview?

  Alright, I've gotten to the second step in the interview process. At this point I'm working under the assumption that I might be offered a position -- flying my butt to Redmond would be quite an expense if they weren't at least considering me for something (*crosses fingers*). So, if one is offered a position, how should a CS student negotiate? I've heard a few strategies about dealing with software companies when you are being considered for a hire, but most of them are considering the developer in a powerful position. In such examinations, (s)he has lots of job experience, and may even be overqualified for what the employer is looking for. (s)he is part of a small job market of qualified developers, because 99% of applications companies receive are from those who are woefully under qualified. I'm in a completely different position. I think I compare favorably to most of my fellow students, and I have been a programmer for almost 10 years, but often I still feel green compared to most of my coworkers. I'm in a position where the employer holds most of the chips; they'd be doing me quite a favor by hiring me. I think this scenario is considerably different than the targets for most of the advice I've seen. Above all, I don't want to be such a prick negotiating that it damages my chances to actually operate in a position, even if it means not negotiating at all. How should one approach a scenario like this? P.S. If this is off topic feel free to close it -- I think it's borderline and I'm of the opinion that it's better to ask and be closed than not ask at all ;)

• When to use PHP or ASP.NET? [closed]

  I have worked extensively in developing web applications using PHP and ASP.NET, but one of the questions that I'm constantly asked by customers is whether to move forward with a php website or an asp.net website. So naturally the first thing that comes to mind is to answer the question like this: PHP is open-source and ASP.NET is from Microsoft. Usually after something like that is said the customer has a blank look on there face. Apparently the fact that one is open source and the other isn't doesn't really faze them. And for good reason, because when I first heard it, it really doesn't tell me much. I know from working with both that each have their + and - when it comes to developing websites. NOTE: THIS QUESTION IS NOT TO QUESTION WHICH IS BETTER TO DEVELOP WITH. THIS QUESTION IS INTENDED TO BE OBJECTIVE. My question is what are differences between ASP.NET and PHP as far as Features Security Extendability Frameworks Average Development Time And when one is generally used over the other for certain types of projects. I am trying to compile a list of facts to be able to compare with the customer what developement platform is better for there particular project. I have done a simple search on google and a ton of articles come up, but the problem is the majority are usually biased towards PHP or ASP.NET. Also if you can maybe provide examples from experience when one technology was more preferable than the other that would be awesome.

• About the External Graphics Card and CPU usage

  We are Rendering 16 live Streams at our client machine through one of our applications and the resolution of the video streams are as 4CIF/MPEG4/25FPS/4000Kbits. The configuration of the client machine is below. HP Desktop Machine: Microsoft Windows XP Intel (R) Core2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz, 1.94 GB of RAM Intel (R) Q45/Q43 Series Express Chipset (Inbuild) The CPU usage of the machine peaks 99% for 16 streams. After some discussion, we had decided to install external graphics card to reduce the CPU usage. So that, we have tried following graphics cards. NVIDIA Quadro NVS 440 - 128 MB Radeon HD 4350 - 512 MB GDDR2 Redeon HD 4350 - 1GB DDR2 ASUS EAH 4350 Silent 1GB DDR2 But the performance wise there has been no difference - even a drop in performance. So, what is the purpose of these external graphics cards? Really it will reduce the CPU usage? What parameters have to check, if we want to reduce the CPU usage?

• CentOS: safe to yum reinstall after removing 32-bit packages?

  as per the CentOS FAQ on removing 32-bit packages present in a 64-bit install, is it safe to perform the last step: You may also want to do this: yum reinstall \* The reason is that sometimes the /usr/share/ items (shared between BOTH packages) get removed when removing the 32-bit RPM packages. on an existing installation? (i.e. where data & settings of possibly affected applications need to be preserved) rpm -Va shows a number of entries like: /sbin/ethtool: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /sbin/ethtool /usr/libexec/mysqld: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking S.?..... /usr/libexec/mysqld along with /usr/share entries with T flag (apparently filetime diff, seems safe) The machine is up & running fine, but may not be whenever a reboot occurs. Clue-in as to the real state of the machine (hosed or OK) appreciated Thanks

• Port Forwarding on Actiontec GT704-WG Router Issues

  I am trying to setup a server at customer's location that has the Actiontec GT704-WG DSL router. The port forwarding it not working at all. Here's the details: Server: OpenSuse Linux box with a static IP address of 192.168.1.200 Application running accepting connections on port 8060 Firewall disabled Local connections (within the network) working properly Router: Updated to latest firmware available DHCP range set to 192.168.1.69-192.168.1.199 to not have any conflicts with the server Firewall set to "off" Rule set in the "Applications" setting to forward 8060 TCP and UDP to 192.168.1.200 machine (I've tried using the "TCP,UDP" option as well as both individual options) I've also tried just simply putting the server in the DMZ to see if I could connect to anything, but still nothing. Looking for any clues before I call and waste hours explaining the issue to tech support.

• Windows Phone 7 event

  This might not be of interest to anyone living outside of the Netherlands, but I still wanted to share this. On march 10th the dutch .net usergroup dotNed (of which I am chairman) organizes a LAN party together with the company Sevensteps. Sevensteps is a big player in the Surface area: they are one of the few companies whose applications are part of the standard tools you get when you buy a Surface unit. They were also present at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this year to introduce the SUR40, as mentioned in my previous post. But they do not only develop software for the Surface, they also do a lot of interesting things on other platforms. One of these is Windows Phone 7, or WP7 in short. Sevensteps and dotNed have joined forces to organize a free full day event where we will develop a WP7 application. The people attending will be developers (experienced and not so experienced on WP7), designers and all other sorts of people you’d expect in a project team. The day will start around 9.00 am and will end when the app is finished. We will form teams of both experienced and not experienced developers so that we can learn from each other. Each team will have their own task to perform, and in the end all parts will be assembled to form a killer WP7 app. As with everything that dotNed does this event is free for everyone. Microsoft will pay for dinner, Sevensteps will provide the room, lunch and ideas (and their expertise of course) and the rest is up to us! • How to batch rename files copied from OSX to Windows with ':' in filenames?

  This is really puzzling. I have lots of videos that were stored using Mac OS, and now I have to edit them on Windows XP. I copied files using HFSExplorer. Editing software refuses to open the files with their current names, and so far I have not found a way to batch rename all the files. Names of the files look like this: clip-2009-10-01 21;26;00.mov But I suspect in OSX the time was 21:26:00. I would like to replace the space with an underscore, and semicolons with dash. I've tried several bulk rename applications, with ; and :, but in vain. Also I've tried rename.pl, but also in vain.

• Small-scale database options for .NET

  I have a .NET 4.0/WPF based application I've developed and maintain for my company that acts as a friendly GUI central-point-of-information, combining information pulled from a couple of SQL databases, as well as CSV exports from a few other applications. I would like to build out my own database to support the entirety of the information that the application accesses, so that I could have a service running on my server that would read in necessary remote SQL info and file exports, to provide the user's application with a single database to connect to, as well as to remove all of the file handling currently involved in the program (copying new CSV resources from network location, reading them into memory each launch.) I have complete control and flexibility here as long as the user's experience isn't affected, and this is as much a learning experience as it is tidying up. Caveat being, I don't have much in the way of a budget. Right now I recognize my options to be: SQL Express - I'm comfortable with the server setup, I like ADO.NET and LINQ to SQL. I feel that I have the least to learn here, but it would let me focus on SQL in a familiar environment. Perhaps in conjunction with Entity Framework? MongoDB - I don't know a whole lot about, but I've heard the name enough to make me curious. Brief research seems friendly enough, and there is .NET support. I like working with open source projects. My questions are: What's popular and extensible right now? I'm not far from starting to job-hunt, and I'd like this project to be relevant going forward. What am I missing? Pros, cons? Other options? What plays well with .NET? What are the things I should be considering, the questions I should be asking, when making a decision like this? Thanks for your time.

• Log monitoring using Zabbix

  Hi I am monitoring logs using Zabbix. I am trying to monitor a log file using Zabbix 1.8.4. I created an item using the following details: Host: Zabbix server Description: logger_test Type: Zabbix agent (active) Key: log[/tmp/scribetest/test3/test3_current,error,,100] Type of Infromation: Log Update interval (in sec): 1 sec Keep history (in days): 90 Status: Active Applications: Log files I created a trigger and attached it with the item logger_test using the following details. Name: logger_test_trigger Expression: {Zabbix server:log[/tmp/scribetest/test3/test3_current,error,,100].str(error)}=1 Severity: disaster The above settings works fine for the first time but next time the trigger shows ZBX_NOTSUPPORTED and after that item also shows "not supported" message.   Yesterday I blogged about AWS AMIs and Oracle VM templates. These are great mechanisms to stand up an initial cloud environment. However, they don't provide the capability to manage, provision and update an environment once it is up and running. This is where AWS Cloud Formations and Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder comes into play. In a way, these tools/frameworks pick up where AMIs and VM templates leave off. Once again, there a similar offers from AWS and Oracle that compliant and also overlap with each other. Let's start by looking at the definitions: AWS CloudFormation gives developers and systems administrators an easy way to create and manage a collection of related AWS resources, provisioning and updating them in an orderly and predictable fashion. AWS CloudFormations Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder - Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder makes it possible for administrators to quickly configure and provision entire multi-tier enterprise applications onto virtualized and cloud environments. Oracle VM Builder As with the discussion around should you use AMI or VM Templates, there are pros and cons to each: 1. CloudFormation is JSON, Assembly Builder is GUI and CLI 2. • Why do I get "permission denied" errors with Python easy_install?

  I'm an Ubuntu newbie and have been trying to install python's easy_install so that I don't have to deal with source files when install Python libraries. I"ve ran the following, and it seems to install the correct applications: sudo apt-get install python-setuptools However, when i run easy_install sqlalchemy or easy_install pysqlite3, it doesn't work. I get the following error message: install_dir /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ error: can't create or remove files in install directory The following error occurred while trying to add or remove files in the installation directory: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/test-easy-install-1674.pth' The installation directory you specified (via --install-dir, --prefix, or the distutils default setting) was: /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/ Perhaps your account does not have write access to this directory? If the installation directory is a system-owned directory, you may need to sign in as the administrator or "root" account. • How do I give Ubuntu 10.10 more space (when installed inside Windows 7 (via wubi))?

  I had installed Ubuntu inside Windows XP but then I formatted XP and installed Windows 7. EDIT1: I used Wubi for the same. I want to know which one of the two will solve my problem? creating a virtual disk or resizing root? Also is resizing root possible as the 4GB ext4 partition is already in a NTFS format Hard Drive partition. At the time of installation I had allocated only 4GB of space to Ubuntu. I want to increase that size as I keep getting a low disk space notification. I have surfed through a lot of similar questions but this is not a duplicate. Because I want to know a little about the file systems. In order to solve my problem,do I have to increase the size of root.disk? Or will it be solved by creating a virtual disk? Also I want to know the difference between creating a virtual disk and just increasing disk space of root.I'm new to Ubuntu so I don't know how the file systems function. EDIT2:I have created a virtual disk of 10gb ,but I'm still getting the same notification.Is there anyway to install all further applications on the virtual disk I created?

• Distinguishing between UI command & domain commands

  I am building a WPF client application using the MVVM pattern that provides an interface on top of an existing set of business logic residing in a library which is shared with other applications. The business library followed a domain-driven architecture using CQRS to separate the read and write models (no event sourcing). The combination of technologies and patterns has brought up an interesting conundrum: The MVVM pattern uses the command pattern for handling user-interaction with the view models. .NET provides an ICommand interface which is implemented by most MVVM frameworks, like MVVM Light's RelayCommand and Prism's DelegateCommand. For example, the view model would expose a number of command objects as properties that are bound to the UI and respond when the user performs actions like clicking buttons. Many implementations of the CQRS use the command pattern to isolate and encapsulate individual behaviors. In my business library, we have implemented the write model as command / command-handler pairs. As such, when we want to do some work, such as create a new order, we 'issue' a command (CreateOrderCommand) which is routed to the command-handler responsible for executing the command. This is great, clearly explained in many sources and I am good with it. However, take this scenario: I have a ToolbarViewModel which exposes a CreateNewOrderCommand property. This ICommand object is bound to a button in the UI. When clicked, the UI command creates and issues a new CreateOrderCommand object to the domain which is handled by the CreateOrderCommandHandler. This is difficult to explain to other developers and I am finding myself getting tongue-tied because everything is a command. I'm sure I'm not the first developer to have patterns overlap like this where the naming/terminology also overlap. How have you approached distinguishing your commands used in the UI from those used in the domain? (Edit: I should mention that the business library is UI-agnostic, i.e. no UI technology-specific code exists, or will exists, in this library.)

• How to recover broken dpkg after lucid-bleed ppa-purge?

  Did a ppa-purge of lucid-bleed and dpkg didn't downgrade properly and now it is broken. dpkg: PreDepends: tar (>= 1.23) but 1.22-2ubuntu1 is to be installed What scares me is when simulating the removal of dpkg I get: Removing this package may render the system unusable. Are you sure you want to do that? and then the list of packages which depend on it, which will also be removed, is obviously very long. Is it safe for me to remove dpkg just to reinstall it? How would I ensure the list of packages which were also removed are then reinstalled? Will forcing the version of dpkg help? (FYI: simulating a forced version brings up a much smaller list of applications which will also be removed). Any other suggestions? Additional information based on comments: ppa-purge log: http://pastebin.com/1kT8cLvP If I sudo apt-get install dpkg=1.15.5.6ubuntu4.5 I get The following packages have unmet dependencies: libdpkg-perl: Depends: dpkg (= 1.15.8) but 1.15.5.6ubuntu4.5 is to be installed which sucks because that means more would be broken after doing so...but when I force the version through Synaptic I get: To be removed alien, build-essential, cdbs, checkinstall, debhelper, devscripts, dpkg-dev, google-earth-stable, googleearth-package, libdpkg-perl, lintian, lsb, lsb-core, lsb-cxx, lsb-desktop, lsb-graphics, lsb-languages, lsb-multimedia, lsb-printing, lsb-qt4, lsb-security, ubuntu-dev-tools.

• How to make and restore incremental snapshots of hard disk

  I use Virtual Box a lot for distro / applications testing purposes. One of the features I simply love about it is virtual machines snapshots, its saves a state of a virtual machine and is able to restore it to its former glory if something you did went wrong without any problems and without consuming your all hard disk space. On my live systems I know how to create a 1:1 image of the file system but all the solutions I'v known will create a new image of the complete file system. Are there any programs / file systems that are capable of taking a snapshot of a current file system, save it on another location but instead of making a complete new image it creates incremental backups? To easy describe what I want, it should be as dd images of a file system, but instead of only a full backup it would also create incremental. I am not looking for clonezilla, etc. It should run within the system itself with no (or almost none) intervention from the user, but contain all the data of the file systems. I am also not looking for a duplicity backup your all system excluding some folders script + dd to save your mbr. I can do that myself, looking for extra finesse. I'm looking for something I can do before doing massive changes to a system and then if something when wrong or I burned my hard disk after spilling coffee on it I can just boot from a liveCD and restore a working snapshot to a hard disk. It does not need to be daily, it doesn't even need a schedule. Just run once in a while and let it its job and preferably RAW based not file copy based.

• The MsC gray zone: How to deal with the "too unexperienced on engineering/too under-qualified for research" situation?

  Last year I've got a MsC degree on CS. On the beginning of the MsC course, I was keen on moving on with research and go for a PhD. However, as the months passed, I started to feel the urge to write software that people would, well, actually use. The programming bug had bitten me, again. So, I decided that before deciding on getting a PhD degree, I would spend some time on the "real world", working as a software developer. Sadly, most companies here in Brazil are "services" companies that seem to be stuck on the 80s when it comes to software development. I have to fend off pushy managers, less-than-competent coworkers and outrageous software requirements (why does everyone seem to need a 50k Oracle license and a behemoth Websphere AS for their CRUD applications?) on a daily basis, and even though I still love software development, the situation is starting to touch a nerve. And, mind you, I'm already lucky for getting a job at a place that isn't a plain software sweatshop. Sure, there are better places around here or I could always try my luck abroad, but then I hit the proverbial brick wall: Sorry, you're too unexperienced as a developer and too under-qualified as a researcher I've already heard this, and variations of that, multiple times. Research position recruiters look for die-hard, publication-ridden, rockstar PhDs, while development position recruiters look for die-hard, experience-ridden, rockstar programmers. To most, my MsC degree seems like a minor bump on my CV (and an outright waste of time for some). Applying for abroad positions is even harder, since the employer would have to deal of the hassle of a VISA process, which I understand that, sometimes, is too much. Now I'm feeling I've reached a dead-end. I'm certain that development (and not research) is my thing, so should I just dismiss my MsC (or play it as a "trump card") and play the "big fish on a small pond" role while I gather some experience and contribute on some open-source projects as a plus? Is there a better way to handle this?
