• can the remote app rd web access be accessed from my local system

  I am new to the remote app remote desktop access. I can access the application that i have published from my server using the link FQDN\rdweb. But on trying to access the same url from my local system(outside the server domain, say from my home pc) i get a not found error. Is there anything that i need to change in my local system to be able to access the remote applications? Or is it that for accessing webapps i need to be logged into the server? Please help me understand this

• ALPS touchpad stops working after reboot

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS. My Compaq Presario CQ-40 324la touchpad worked after first restarting after installation. But after restarting a second time, the touchpad is completely disabled, without having changed anything in the system. I've tried solutions but haven't had good results. The applications I've installed (fro "solutions" are: Pointing Devices Synaptiks Dconf-Tools I've also tried updating GRUB, adding this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.nomux") I tried these commands in a terminal. Neither has worked. sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps El Touchpad ALPS se desactiva al reiniciar Recién he actualizado a Ubuntu 12.04LTS y a mi parecer ha mejorado mucho con respecto a 11.10... Pero ese no es mi punto ahora. El Touchpad funcionó correctamente luego del primer reinicio después de la instalación. Pero luego de volver a reiniciar, el Touchpad queda totalmente deshabilitado sin haber hecho cambio alguno en el sistema. He probado las soluciones en su mayoría y no he tenido buenos resultados. • Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook &ndash; Book Review (sort of)

  I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. • How to prevent window list "confusion" when detaching eclipse views?

  I'm detaching eclipse views to float on my other screen in order to get more coding space on the first screen. When doing that, the detached windows appear in ubuntu's window list applet with the eclipse icon but with no title. Then, when pushing the main eclipse button on the window list, one of the detached views will get to front but not the main eclipse window. When using Alt+tab I can also see the extra eclipse icons but choosing the correct one for the main window works and make it the active window while also showing all detached childs. Other applications behave as expected, e.g. gimp floating panels don't show on the windows list and this is also the case with SlickEdit, Firefox child windows all show on window list but gets the focus correctly, etc. I can see the the workspace switcher show my two screens but in 'Monitor preferences' I see my two screens as one big screen. I'm working with ubuntu 10.04.4 under a VMware Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285. 'uname -a' output: Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-40-generic #87-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 6 00:56:56 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux The desktop screen shot with the problem, ununtu's version, and Monitor preferences. How can I solve it and make only the main window show in window list or at least get activated when pushing it's button on the window list?

• Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? (if it exists) Would I be better upgrading laptop to one with 2 digital ports ( I just see a lot with VGA and HDMI though) specs: Model: Toshiba Satellite C675-S106 (Windows 7) Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 3000 (supports 2 displays) Processor: Intel Core i3-2350M

• Please help restore my crashed launcher/compizconfig

  I have just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. Everything worked fine at first, but at one point when I was editing some CompizConfig settings (just something basic like 'number of desktops'), CompizConfig crashed. Then the whole launcher disappeared, along with most of the buttons in the top panel. The shutdown button, calendar, etc. all went, leaving just the tabs from File to Help. Also, windows now have the title and File, Edit..(etc) tabs on 2 separate lines, instead of the new format where hovering over the bar switches which one is visible. I have since been using Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal and open applications, shut down, etc, from there. I have typed in the command: unity --reset which has some effect, but the terminal never reaches the end of the task. I've also done apt-get update, which completed fine. Can anyone help me restore the launcher and panel functions?? I am getting most frustrated by the fact that once I have opened Firefox, I can't enter any other commands!

• Setting Linux UID on NFS volume from EMC NX4

  I have an EMC NX4 from which there are several CIFS shares with corresponding NFS mount points. The CIFS user ids seem fine but when viewed from Linux they are all 327xx numbers and can't be set from the file system. (IE CHOWN doesn't work - permission denied). On our other (older) EMC devices we used an MMC app to set the Linux UID for each user. I don't seem to have such an app on the 'Applications and Tools' CD for this new device. Is there some other method for setting these? Did I setup the system incorrectly?

• SCO Unix - finding and pulling data

  We recently acquired a company that was running a legacy application on a SCO Unix box. I can tell that the app is running off of http, but its reporting and data export functions are limited and I'd like to find a master db or data source on the box that maybe I can migrate into something more useful. Any ideas how I could possibly find that? Would there be something in apache or startup scripts that might point to a master db? do Unix applications have standard data source locations? I'm not sure if I'm wording this right so apologies in advance.

• Gnome Terminal intercepts ctrl-F1

  Gnome Terminal does not pass on to applications the keypress ctrl-F1. It's an official bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/932940 The bug is marked Feb. 2012 but lives on in serendipity since 2009. The bug report is not even complete since shift-ctrl-F1 is also affected. However, I noticed that those two keys are the default keys for switch-to-workspace-1 and move-to-workspace-1. So I disabled them. Zero, zippo, zilch: Gnome Terminal would still swallow the keys. Next, I assigned to those two workspace functions totally different keys. The new keybindings did work, Gnome Terminal would still swallow ctrl-F1 and shift-ctrl-F1. Where are the default workspace keybindings stored? [Not in a xml-file.]

• IE9 development tools giving "Unable to attach to the process." error

  Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

• Synaptics touchpad problem when disabling it and then enabling it

  My girlfriend has an HP dv6000. In ubuntu 10.10 32bit i use the synaptic on it and all is good but when i disable it and enable it the problem starts. when i press the disable button in the synaptics touchpad it disables the mouse AND the keyboard. After enabled the Keyboard keys and Mouse clicks do not work. If i click on the panel below, for example the Applications, Places or System buttons the focus gets stuck there forever. I can open nautilus by clicking on it but i can not use the menus, the ALT+F2 function, see the wireless connections, lower the sound through the panel, etc.. Here comes the weird part. If i press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or any other tty for that matter) and then come back to CTRL+ALT+F7 where the gui is everything works perfect again. This started about a week ago but she told me right now. i checked dmesg which is for sometime now throwing some warnings about Skipping EDID probe do to cached edid but for what i could find out this did not create the problem in the start. NOTE: I do not need to login when i do CTRL+ALT+F1 i just need to change to another tty then come back to F7. What could be causing this problem?

• What are some practical uses of the "new" modifier in C# with respect to hiding?

  A co-worker and I were looking at the behavior of the new keyword in C# as it applies to the concept of hiding. From the documentation: Use the new modifier to explicitly hide a member inherited from a base class. To hide an inherited member, declare it in the derived class using the same name, and modify it with the new modifier. We've read the documentation, and we understand what it basically does and how it does it. What we couldn't really get a handle on is why you would need to do it in the first place. The modifier has been there since 2003, and we've both been working with .Net for longer than that and it's never come up. When would this behavior be necessary in a practical sense (e.g.: as applied to a business case)? Is this a feature that has outlived its usefulness or is what it does simply uncommon enough in what we do (specifically we do web forms and MVC applications and some small factor WinForms and WPF)? In trying this keyword out and playing with it we found some behaviors that it allows that seem a little hazardous if misused. This sounds a little open-ended, but we're looking for a specific use case that can be applied to a business application that finds this particular tool useful.

• Towards Ultra-Reusability for ADF - Adaptive Bindings

  The task flow mechanism embodies one of the key value propositions of the ADF Framework, it's primary contribution being the componentization of your applications and implicitly the introduction of a re-use culture, particularly in large applications. However, what if we could do more? How could we make task flows even more re-usable than they are today? Well one great technique is to take advantage of a feature that is already present in the framework, a feature which I will call, for want of a better name, "adaptive bindings". What's an adaptive binding? well consider a simple use case.  I have several screens within my application which display tabular data which are all essentially identical, the only difference is that they happen to be based on different data collections (View Objects, Bean collections, whatever) , and have a different set of columns. Apart from that, however, they happen to be identical; same toolbar, same key functions and so on. So wouldn't it be nice if I could have a single parametrized task flow to represent that type of UI and reuse it? Hold on you say, great idea, however, to do that we'd run into problems. Each different collection that I want to display needs different entries in the pageDef file and: I want to continue to use the ADF Bindings mechanism rather than dropping back to passing the whole collection into the taskflow   If I do use bindings, there is no way I want to have to declare iterators and tree bindings for every possible collection that I might want the flow to handle  Ah, joy! I reply, no need to panic, you can just use adaptive bindings. Defining an Adaptive Binding  It's easiest to explain with a simple before and after use case.  Here's a basic pageDef definition for our familiar Departments table.  <executables> <iterator Binds="DepartmentsView1" DataControl="HRAppModuleDataControl" RangeSize="25"             id="DepartmentsView1Iterator"/> </executables> <bindings> <tree IterBinding="DepartmentsView1Iterator" id="DepartmentsView1">   <nodeDefinition DefName="oracle.demo.model.vo.DepartmentsView" Name="DepartmentsView10">     <AttrNames>       <Item Value="DepartmentId"/>         <Item Value="DepartmentName"/>         <Item Value="ManagerId"/>         <Item Value="LocationId"/>       </AttrNames>     </nodeDefinition> </tree> </bindings>  Here's the adaptive version: <executables> <iterator Binds="${pageFlowScope.voName}" DataControl="HRAppModuleDataControl" RangeSize="25"             id="TableSourceIterator"/> </executables> <bindings> <tree IterBinding="TableSourceIterator" id="GenericView"> <nodeDefinition Name="GenericViewNode"/> </tree> </bindings>  You'll notice three changes here.   Most importantly, you'll see that the hard-coded View Object name  that formally populated the iterator Binds attribute is gone and has been replaced by an expression (${pageFlowScope.voName}). This of course, is key, you can see that we can pass a parameter to the task flow, telling it exactly what VO to instantiate to populate this table! I've changed the IDs of the iterator and the tree binding, simply to reflect that they are now re-usable The tree binding itself has simplified and the node definition is now empty.  Now what this effectively means is that the #{node} map exposed through the tree binding will expose every attribute of the underlying iterator's collection - neat! (kudos to Eugene Fedorenko at this point who reminded me that this was even possible in his excellent "deep dive" session at OpenWorld  this year) Using the adaptive binding in the UI Now we have a parametrized  binding we have to make changes in the UI as well, first of all to reflect the new ID that we've assigned to the binding (of course) but also to change the column list from being a fixed known list to being a generic metadata driven set: <af:table value="#{bindings.GenericView.collectionModel}" rows="#{bindings.GenericView.rangeSize}"         fetchSize="#{bindings.GenericView.rangeSize}"           emptyText="#{bindings.GenericView.viewable ? This also demonstrates the importance of interacting with data only via the binding layer APIs. • All browsers crash when file uploading or downloading dialog opens up

  I pretty much summarized the problem in the title. I tried to get some solutions. All I found was check if the Chrome has any concurrent or erroneous applications installed on my computer that conflicts with Chrome (by typing chrome://conflicts). But "unfortunately" it said that there are no perceived conflicts. First I thought it is only with Chrome, but soon I saw that no. All internet browsers are affected. I noticed this problem after I installed Fruity Loops, but uninstalling it didn't solve the problem. Maybe Fruity loops is not the guilty reason. Have any of you met this problem before? What should I do? Thank you. UPDATE: Sorry I forgot that this is under Windows 8.1.

• OCZ Agility 3 SSD - Incorrect capacity displayed

  Just installed a 60GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD, put Windows, and other various applications on there. All working fine. However, when I look at the drive in Windows 7, it says that I have 1.5GB free, but when I select all folders on the drive and view the properties to see the combined file size it says that the total is 28.9GB. So I'm effectively losing half of my capacity!! Any ideas on what this could be? PC Spec: Windows 7 60GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD Thanks, Chris

  Follow these simple guidelines to make collaboration using SharePoint easier:1. File Name:While it is allowed to use spaces in your filename (and maybe it seems even logical to do so), don’t use them if your file will end up (or is born on) SharePoint. When you use the “download a copy” functionality, SharePoint will replace the spaces with an “_”. This might (will) result in inconsistency when you upload the “same” file again, since SharePoint will see this as a different file (since the filename is different). I recommend using a filename with Capitalization style naming guideline. For instance: the document “Overall governance model.docx” would be named “OverallGovernanceModel.docx”Use the TITLE field in the office applications to give your document a title (and subtitle and keywords, .) The title column can be used in a view in a library. You can get to the document properties by clicking on 'Office Button/Prepare/Properties'. (Office 2007). This is metadata that is stored with the document, and will remain in the document (even if you exchange this document via e-mail, via an external hard drive). The filename cannot be longer than 128 characters. (and that is IMHO far beyond reasonable) You cannot use any of these characters: ” # % & * : < > ? \ / { | } ~ 2. Versioning:SharePoint has a built-in versioning system. You can work with major (published) versions, and minor (draft) versions. Of each of these two document types, you can store a numbers of versions that are kept. Watch out, each version is saved, not only the delta between 2 versions, and this counts to your Site Collection Quota. (Example: you have a Word document with a size of 2 MB. When you keep 5 Drafts this will result in storing (and consuming) 10 MB.So, don’t call your document “NewUserAccountProcessDRAFTv1.docx”, but “NewUserAccountProcess.docx” and use versioning setting in your library.You can enable views on your library to display the version number.You can enable the version number to be displayed in a Word document.3. Use MetadataUse metadata to assign other properties to documents, so it can be easily identified, sorted- or grouped by.

  I am in the middle of reinstalling Windows 7, and I would like to install all the software in as few steps as possible. I saw a web site recently that listed a lot of different Freeware and Opensource appliations. There was a checkmark next to each one so you could select the ones you want, and then they would all download in a single package to install at one time. The idea was for when you were setting up after a fresh install. It was for Windows and they were adding 64-bit applications.

Background: I am integrating two separate web application that are developed in ASP .NET and JSP/Struts. As such, they are hosted on two different server technologies, namely Win2K3 and Redhat Enterprise Server 5.5. Problem: There is a copy of production data in my test environment with real e-mail addresses. I need to test the e-mail functionality of these applications, but I do not want them to send out actual e-mails. Is there a way to catch and redirect all outgoing e-mails? Ideally, I would like to send all outgoing e-mails to another e-mail (i.e., [email protected]) so my testers can look at them.

• I accidentally hid my Gnome Panel

  I got a new tablet pc, and in attempt to hide the empathy mail icon, accidentally made the entire panel dissappear. (The one at the top that has applications/places/system, and battery life/network connections etc). I don't believe I killed it, because alt+f2, then gnome-panel does not bring it back. I've tried alt+ctrl+backspace to reset gnome, that didn't bring it back. It must just be some setting like 'hide' or something... Any tips to get it back? Thanks.

• How can I find which "command" corresponds to opening a gnome-panel menu, for use in a keyboard shortcut?

  There are many questions and answers here and around the web on setting basic keyboard shortcuts in GNOME. Most of them are either for launching applications, or Compiz settings, or for changing defaults for other things for which Ubuntu provides defaults shortcuts. What I want to know though is how to refer to a gnome-panel menu item in a custom keyboard shortcut. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with GNOME Classic, and the old GNOME 2 / Ubuntu 10.04 keyboard shortcuts for the main menus (Alt-F1) and the "Me Menu" (Super+S) don't seem to work. So my question is two-fold. Primarily I'd like to know how to set those shortcuts. But a second-order question is how I could have found this out myself: is there some program I can use to see what signals or commands are fired off when I click on various things, in this case gnome-panel menu items? I'm interested in the broader question because I've sometimes wanted to set shortcuts for specific menus or menu items in GNOME 2, so a way to find out what command I need there would be useful. Give a man a rod, as they say :-) I've had a look at a good lot of keyboard shortcut and menu related items here to no avail. One somewhat relevant question is this one, but it's just a "how do I do it" question, and applies to Unity, not GNOME, although it would be great if whatever investigatory method answers this question might also apply under different desktops, like Unity. The answer to this question is essentially how I was doing it in 10.04 / GNOME 2, although the questioner's query isn't exactly addressed - how to get directly to "Broadcast" with a key combination. Again, it would be great if an answer delving into how such menus work and how they interact with the rest of the system would be applicable to pinpoint menu items.
