• ETL Software Research Question

  Where I work, we use an in-house ETL solution that's homegrown and has been around for 5-10 years. I'm still new to my data analysis job, but I was wondering about the ETL tools that are out there. This is a new area for me. My situation, and job, is basically digging in a set of databases (DB2, SQL2005, Citrix, Ancient Cobol Database with a SQL Wrapper on top, MySQL, etc). Gather the desired information. combine the different datasets into one set. output into a file of choice (CSV, Tab Separated, Pipe Separated, XLS, etc). FTP to customer. I guess what my real question is, given my job, what are some good ETL suites that I can look at and compare to my in-house tools? This is more to research some other options. Ultimately, I'd either suggest a new solution or get options/ideas to improve our current app.

• To use Dart, the Java programmer has to work with 2 languages? [closed]

  When deciding on a technology to use for web apps, it's become a difficult choice between GWT and Dart and I am looking for guidance in deciding. GWT is a java programmer's dream because they don't have to learn a new language or have to worry about a separate IDE or extra plugin etc. GWT was sold using this value proposition - one didn't need to program in Javascript. But are Google making a U-turn and saying "go through the hassle of learning a new language" afterall? Or is it intended for there to be a Java to Dart compiler so that Java developers do not have to learn a new language? (this is not a rant, so I don't know why you are down-voting the question) Note: "the syntax is very similar" is not a justification. You could say why bother with GWT and just work with Java + Javascript directly.

• Creating a portfolio of projects [closed]

  As I pursue the path of becoming a programmer, I would like to build up a portfolio of projects I worked on at my current job so that I can eventually get programming work elsewhere (either as an employee, contractor, one man consulting shop, etc). Some of these were things I coded myself, others I was instrumental in the architecture, design and functionality (ie, not as a programmer but more of a BA). How do I show the work that I have done to others on the projects that I have produced for the company I work at? This is all internal software, so it's not something that the outside world would be able to use, and some of our products contain proprietary financial market tools and it would not be prudent to share those with the outside world. My guess is that screenshots would definitely be out of the question, as well as functional descriptions of the software.

• Ubuntu 12.10 webapps don't open correctly when using Chromium

  I have just installed Ubuntu 12.10 completely fresh, the old version of Ubuntu was discarded or overwritten (or whatever you call it). I want to use the Ubuntu webapps with Chromium but I've had several problems. }The first problem is that Chromium won't ask me if I want to install a webapp if I go to a supported site (and I don't already have the webapp installed). The second problem is that when I install the webapp by visiting the site in Firefox, and then I try to open it in Chromium, Ubuntu will open a completely new Chromium icon and window in the Launcher, and the icon will be labeled "Untitled"; also there is no search bar in the new window, only the tab at the top. I've tried using several webapps with Firefox set as the default browser and they work as expected: once the webapp icon is clicked a Firefox window is opened on the Firefox launcher icon, and the window has 'new tab' button and search bar.

• Why I LOVE Dell

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. As an intern I was on the web team doing lots of architecture and developing UI in ExtJS and some Java backend experience. Now as a full time employee I am mainly doing ExtJS applications, which I enjoy a lot, and I want to stay in the web development field, but: Am I limiting my career options with just doing ExtJS stuff? Will experience in ExtJS help or hinder my programming skills? Will I be looked down upon because I'm only gaining experienced with ExtJS?

  On 3rd of Nov 2012 somebody started this thread : http://forums.hostgator.com/advice-needed-new-account-t214566.html?t=214566 subject "Advice needed on new account". I visited it on 5th and when I saw the total views I was stunned to see figure of 80,000( while other threads were having views from 50-300). I even made a post using name of rag_gupta. Then I simply typed in Google in IE (I work on Firefox) : Advice needed on new account ---- and yes this same page was in no#1 position. Subsequently I tried to create similar wording article in Hubpages to see how it'd fare. Unfortunately it was not allowed to be published. Then I published in blogger.com. But hardly any hits. Considering only the first two posts in the thread what could have driven google to rank it highly?

• Microsoft Sync. Framework with Azure on iOS

  A bit of a revelation this evening. I discovered something obvious, but missing from my understanding of the brilliant iOS example that ships with the Sync. Framework 4.0CTP It seems that on the server side if a record is edited, correctly only the fields that are modified gets sent down to your device (in my case an iPad). I was previously just blindly assuming that I'd get all fields down.   In reading Alan Kay's question on Significant new inventions I was coming up with answers that were not new ideas but old ones that have been passed by in the main stream. So, what significant lost advances that happened on a side track should be revived in the main stream of software? These would be ideas that worked well in their context but a different context appeared and became dominant the context, even though it lacked the idea. It maybe that in the new dominant context one just cannot do something or it requires great effort to be exerted.

• Putting coworkers as references in CV [closed]

  My friend is working in one organisation for some time and wants to change a job. Problem is that motivation is money related (management is refusing to raise salary without any explanation despite 1) they don't have any questions nor problems related to his work 2) they promised raise long ago) and they won't find anyone to replace him. So they not just won't recommend him, but surely will say he is bad specialist and person as he leaves. Don't put that work in CV is not an option, so he thinks the possible solution is to reference his co-workers and teammates. He didn't work for them as employee, but he worked with them, so their (100% positive) feedback looks like fair compensation of what management will say. Is that correct? Looking for interviewers/employers opinion.

• A Change of Seasons...

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • Handle all authentication logic in database or code?

  We're starting a new(ish) project at work that has been handed off to me. A lot of the database sided stuff has been fleshed out, including some stored procedures. One of the stored procedures, for example, handles creation of a new user. All of the data is validated in the stored procedure (for example, password must be at least 8 characters long, must contain numbers, etc) and other things, such as hashing the password, is done in the database as well. Is it normal/right for everything to be handled in the stored procedure instead of the application itself? It's nice that any application can use the stored procedure and have the same validation, but the application should have a standard framework/API function that solves the same problem. I also feel like it takes away the data from the application and is going to be harder to maintain/add new features to.

  Could someone please let me know where I might find resources for creating MSM files? While I am able to create MSI files using InstallShield, it seems that Visual Studio no longer supports Merge Module Projects, judging by the link below and the screenshot of my version of Visual Studio 2013 - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/z6z02ts5(v=vs.80).aspx To create a new merge module project: On the File menu, point to Add, then click New Project. • movement of sprites with kinect and xna

  im working on a proyect with kinect sdk and xna 4.0. i need take the position of the hands and draw a sprite over it. im doing it directly and, because of that, i get a "trembling hands" effect. so, i was thinking on make the sprite move from the previous position to the new one, given in every frame by the new hand position. this way, the sprite does not jump from one position to another. this is working just fine, but im using a constant value for the velocity, and i really would like to use a variable velocity given by the difference between the prev and the new position. this is, if the hand move more quickly in the reality, the velocity will be higher. I really dont have a clue on how to make this works. can somebody point me in the right direction? thanks.

• Can I Use A Canonical Tag Instead of a Redirect for Updated Content?

  I have some old articles on my blog that get quite a bit of traffic, but are very outdated. I want to remove them from Google's index using the noindex tag, but I'm not sure what the best approach will be to send the same traffic to my new article on the subject without using a redirect (as I want to keep them in my blog archives). I was intending to just put a link at the top of the article pointing to the new one, but was wondering if it was appropriate to use a canonical tag instead; the new article is on the same subject but doesn't contain the same content, so isn't really a copy.
