  • VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

    I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network. When I ran the VPN software to connect to the work network, the internet access went away again.] (Initially posted this on stackoverflow.com, but it was put on hold as off-topic by several users, and was advised to ask here instead)

  • Windows Server 2008 Active Directory DNS setup

    I have to setup a small windows network inside my bigger linux/mac infrastructure. In order to get the windows clients logging onto the domain, I have had to make the DC their primary DNS server, which seems to have worked. I would much prefer to have one DNS server running on my network, or at least one authoritative server running on the network. I have a USG 200 router/firewall and I can configure some static records for DNS, but I an not sure what I need to put in order to get DNS and AD working together, and hints and tips appreciated.

    I have been chosen as one of the 12 final people for a full out scholarship to the college of my choice and it is paid for by a software company so long as I major in Computer Science.I have already had to write an essay on what has most shaped my life (Programming being it) and that was the basis for the interview decision. I now have to go in for an interview with people from the company for the final decision in a week. I do believe I have a good foundation in computer science already. I have roughly 4 years of programming experience in Java, C++, ASM and your typical web stuff. I have done everything from making my own CMS for my site to an assembler to network file transfer applications. That said what types of questions should I expect in an interview of this sort? Do I seem reasonably knowledgeable?

  • Which statically typed languages support intersection types for function return values?

    Initial note: This question got closed after several edits because I lacked the proper terminology to state accurately what I was looking for. Sam Tobin-Hochstadt then posted a comment which made me recognise exactly what that was: programming languages that support intersection types for function return values. Now that the question has been re-opened, I've decided to improve it by rewriting it in a (hopefully) more precise manner. Therefore, some answers and comments below might no longer make sense because they refer to previous edits. (Please see the question's edit history in such cases.) Are there any popular statically & strongly typed programming languages (such as Haskell, generic Java, C#, F#, etc.) that support intersection types for function return values? If so, which, and how? (If I'm honest, I would really love to see someone demonstrate a way how to express intersection types in a mainstream language such as C# or Java.) I'll give a quick example of what intersection types might look like, using some pseudocode similar to C#: interface IX { … } interface IY { … } interface IB { … } class A : IX, IY { … } class B : IX, IY, IB { … } T fn() where T : IX, IY { return … ? new A() : new B(); } That is, the function fn returns an instance of some type T, of which the caller knows only that it implements interfaces IX and IY. (That is, unlike with generics, the caller doesn't get to choose the concrete type of T — the function does. From this I would suppose that T is in fact not a universal type, but an existential type.) P.S.: I'm aware that one could simply define a interface IXY : IX, IY and change the return type of fn to IXY. However, that is not really the same thing, because often you cannot bolt on an additional interface IXY to a previously defined type A which only implements IX and IY separately.   • XP Mode as a server, Win 7 as a client

    I have two virtual machines (XP Mode). They are connected to each other by a network setting - Internal Network. It is the only working setting. This is the only way I got two virtual XP to ping each other. Now I want to connect each of them from the application that runs on Windows 7 which is hosting both virtual machines, but I can't do that. The firewall on both XP-Mode machines is disabled. Any other networking setting added as additional adapter on Xp-Mode machine does not allow me to connect from Windows 7. So my question is this - how to enable connection from Windows 7 application to XP mode application (client - server)? Point 2 (pass message) work perfectly because of the "internal network" setting. The problem is point 1 and 3.

    With gdm3, I was able to remove the last connected users from the list by removing the file '/var/log/ConsoleKit/history' With lightdm, the last users appears even when : removing /var/log/ConsoleKit/history removing /var/lib/lightdm/.cache/unity-greeter/state Where does lightdm store this list ? Edit: It seems like it's using the content from the last command. Then purging the content of the file /var/log/wtmp is sufficient to remove any previously connected user from the list : # > /var/log/wtmp But, after doing this, I have the unwanted side effect that users loging in via lightdm doesn't appears at all in this list. I must say that I'm in a enterprise network environment using NIS. Edit2: Well, it seems that lightdm uses wtmp to display recent network users list, but does not update it.   • Tor Browser: how do I restart just the browser?

    I'm using Tor Browser on Linux from time to time, but I close the browser because it has high memory usage, and leave Vidala running in background to help the network and relay traffic. The problem is, when I want to use Tor Browser again, I have to shut down Vidala and start it again. This takes time and has negative effect on the network. When I execute ./App/Firefox/firefox-bin, the browser starts but says it's not connected via Tor network. Any ideas how to start tor browser and make it connect to existing Vidala instance?

    Hello, I am owning a small company and we have purchased a server to setup few server applications on it as well as other software. We would like to setup our network in following way Internet<-WindowsServer2003 as router<-Switch<-Office Computers Server has two nic interfaces and we have 24ports 1GB network switch connected to one nic and internet connection to another nic. Our ISP is Frontier and we have Fios 25/25. We get network cable out of ONT box directly connected to our server. There are no modems/routers. Setting up DHCP on windows 2003 is easy job but we would like to have the ability to port forward some ports from office computers. I have some knowledge in networking but not as much. How could I setup FHCP server on win2k3 with the ability to port forward some ports to office computers? Thank you for your time

  • What is the supposed productivity gain of dynamic typing?

    I often heard the claim that dynamically typed languages are more productive than statically typed languages. What are the reasons for this claim? Isn't it just tooling with modern concepts like convention over configuration, the use of functional programming, advanced programming models and use of consistent abstractions? Admittedly there is less clutter because the (for instance in Java) often redundant type declarations are not needed, but you can also omit most type declarations in statically typed languages that usw type inference, without loosing the other advantages of static typing. And all of this is available for modern statically typed languages like Scala as well. So: what is there to say for productivity with dynamic typing that really is an advantage of the type model itself?

I'm looking for books that discuss test code specifically (unit-level, integration-level, UI-level, design patterns, code structures and organization, etc.)

  • Lot of Multicast traffic on LAN

    Recently the whole network at work is being hit by multicast traffic originating on the LAN itself. I did some investigating and the service which seems to be responsible is ws-discovery. I have attached a screenshot of wireshark capturing the traffic. I have tried shutting down the source machine from which it was originating, but the multicast traffic still seems to be present in the network. My network topology 2 subnets - 10.10.10.0/24 and 10.20.10.0/24. Gateway is a debian system. We have 3 switches for 3 floors. They are all unmanaged Dlink 24-port switches. Multicast blocking at switch level is out of the question. Any solutions? :(

  • Java - learning / migrating fast

    Hello! This is not one of those questions like "How do I learn Java extremely fast, I know nothing about programming, but I heard Java is cool, yo". I have an interview for a Java Software Developer in a couple of weeks and the thing is that I think that I know C++ really good and I am somewhat good at C# (like, here I can probably answer on a lot of questions related to these languages), but I have almost zero experience with Java. I have a lot of projects written in both languages, I participiated in several open-source projects (mostly C++, though). Now, what should I do (in your opinion) to prepare myself for this Java interview. I guess migrating from C# to Java should be kind of fast, especially when you know a lot about programming in global, patterns, modern techniques and have a lot of practical experience behind you. But still two weeks is obviously not enough to get Java in-depth - so what should I focus on to have the best chances to pass the interview? Thank you.

Within the results tabulation WolframAlpha provided me with all sorts of neat data break downs. I also know my most liked post and my most commented on post. It will even crunch the numbers on your network of friends (60.6% of my friends are married, for example). By far one of the more interesting data analysis it does on the friendship data, however, is organizing all your friends into relationship clusters so you can see who in your Facebook network is friends with other people in your Facebook network. The service from WolframAlpha is free: simply visit the WolframAlpha search portal and type in “Facebook report” to start the process.   • Internal+external interfaces with multiple default gateways on win2003

    Im trying to set up several web servers for a load balanced cluster and need to have each server connected to the internal network (for load balancing) as well as to an external network (internet - for administration). I have two NICs but since I cant set two default gateways I have the external gateway as default and the internal as a route rule. This setup only works half way - the internal network is fine but I cant log in from outside or see the web from the box. If I switch the gateways remote login/web will work, but the internal wont. Im sure someone encountered this before but wasnt able to find anything online. Any help will be appreciated.

  • What all items can I put on my resume without it looking tacky? [closed]

    I've been searching for work, and so far it's very hard for me to even get a call back. So, I'm looking at adding things to my resume. I know a resume doesn't need to be over 2 pages. I have the basics: Objective/personal info General skills (languages known, etc) Work experience Some things I'm considering adding to it: My college education (though I don't have a degree) Awards given for programming skills in high school (curriculum contests and AP test scores) Open source projects? Would any of these 3 items look tacky? And I only have about 1.5 years of work experience, but I've been programming since I was 13. Is there anything else I can add to my resume that would give me a better chance of getting my foot in the door?

    I'm batch transcoding some 50 GB of video files on a USB hard disk which is connected to a wlan router. The drive is mapped as a network drive on my Windows 7 laptop. The speed handicap of the wlan causes some parts of the processing to become unnecessarily slow, so I would like to do the following with PowerShell: List the names of the files on the network drive to be transcoded Copy the first file to a temporary folder on my laptop Simultaneously Transcode the file in the folder Begin copying the next file from the network drive to the temporary folder After transcoding and copy have both ended, Delete the file which has been transcoded from the temporary folder Begin transcoding next file in the temporary folder Loop until all files have been processed How would I be able to do this with PowerShell? The multitasking part is an obstacle for my skill/persistence combination.

  • what is message passing in OO?

    I've been studying OO programming, primarily in C++, C# and Java. I thought I had a good grasp on it with my understanding of encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism (as well as reading a lot of questions on this site). One thing that seems to popup up here and there is the concept of "message passing". Apparently, this is something that is not used whilst OO programming in today's mainstream languages, but is supported by Smalltalk. My questions are: What is message passing? (Can someone give a practical example?) Is there any support for this "message passing" in C++, C# or Java?
