• Better way to clean this messy bool method

  I'm reading Fowler Clean Code book and I think that my code is a little messy, I want some suggestions: I have a simple business requirement that is return the date of new execution of my Thread. I've two class fields: _hour and _day. If actual day is higher than my _day field I must return true, so I'll add a month to "executionDate" If the day is the same, but the actual hour is higher than _hour I should return true too.   Is this possible? I'd like to expose a URL (action) such as http://mysever/myapp/UpdateHeartbeat/. In my MVC application it looks like [Authorize] [AcceptsVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult UpdateHeartbeat() { // update date in DB to DateTime.Now } Now, in my MVC application the user has logged in via FORMS authentication and they can execute that action to their hearts content. What I want to do, is hit that URL progromatically (as part of an API that I wouldl like to build) -- is there a way I can do that without removing the [Authorize] attribute and adding username/password as parameters to the POST?

• Subsonic, child records, and collections

  Hi, I've been working with subsonic for a few weeks now, and it is working really well. However, I've just run into an issue with child objects with additional partial properties. Some of it is probably me just not understanding the .Net object lifecycle. I have an object - search. This has a few properties like permissions and stuff, and it links to a child table called search_options. In my Asp.Net app, it loops through these search options and creates controls. Then on postback, it grabs the values and assigns it back to a "value" property on the search_option. This value property is a simple string that's defined in a partial class. I then want to create a method on the search object, called PerformSearch. This then loops through the child search_options, and performs a custom query based on the "value" property. However, even though I assign the "value" property to the child search_option, when I access it later via the search.search_options collection, it is null. I'm guessing that maybe because it's accessing it in two different places, it performs another lazy load from the DB and the value is lost? Is there a way to tell the class that it's already loaded or something? or a way to access it so it's not reloaded from the DB? The problem is that when the clicks enter there is an error: "Enter a Valid Date" How do I make my Form accept (for example) %d-%b-%Y as the date format?   Hi Geeks, We are having serious MySQL(InnoDB) performance issues at a moment when we do: (10-20) insertions on TABLE1 (10-20) updates on TABLE2 Note: Both above operations happens within fraction of a second. And this occurs every few (10-15) minutes. And all online users (approx 400-600) doing read operation on join of TABLE1 & TABLE2 every 1 second.   I need to query an xml document and then display specific tag values, e.g. forename, surname, group(dept), job_title. I'm using XMLReader as i may need to work with large XML files. I using DomXPath to filter the data, but i don't know how to retrieve the nodeName and value for each element. The code below only returns 'member' as the node name? • ASP.NET MVC Paging for a search form

  I've read several different posts on paging w/ in MVC but none describe a scenario where I have something like a search form and then want to display the results of the search criteria (with paging) beneath the form once the user clicks submit. My problem is that, the paging solution I'm using will create <a href="..."> links that will pass the desired page like so: http://mysite.com/search/2/ and while that's all fine and dandy, I don't have the results of the query being sent to the db in memory or anything so I need to query the DB again. If the results are handled by the POST controller action for /Search and the first page of the data is rendered as such, how do I get the same results (based on the form criteria specified by the user) when the user clicks to move to page 2? Some javascript voodoo? Leverage Session State? Make my GET controller action have the same variables expected by the search criteria (but optional), when the GET action is called, instantiate a FormCollection instance, populate it and pass it to the POST action method (there-by satisfying DRY)? Can someone point me in the right direction for this scenario or provide examples that have been implemented in the past? Thanks!

Sometimes im passing null (or an empty string) in that object index and it is telling me that it cant be converted properly to a DateTime (in this case). My question is what should I default this value to, or is there some way to have the DataTable ignore empty values.

• Multiple threads modifying a collection in Java??

  Hi, The project I am working on requires a whole bunch of queries towards a database. In principle there are two types of queries I am using: read from excel file, check for a couple of parameters and do a query for hits in the database. These hits are then registered as a series of custom classes. Any hit may (and most likely will) occur more than once so this part of the code checks and updates the occurrence in a custom list implementation that extends ArrayList. for each hit found, do a detail query and parse the output, so that the classes created in (I) get detailed info. I figured I would use multiple threads to optimize time-wise. However I can't really come up with a good way to solve the problem that occurs with the collection these items are stored in. To elaborate a little bit; throughout the execution objects are supposed to be modified by both (I) and (II). I deliberately didn't c/p any code, as it would be big chunks of code to make any sense..   I am applying NHibernate to an existing project, where tables and columns are already defined and fixed. The database is MS-SQL-2008. NHibernate 2.1.2 Many tables have a column of type timestamp named "ReplicationID", and also a column of type datetime named "UpdatedDT". I understand I might be able to use the element of the mapping file to describe the "ReplicationID" column which will allow NHibernate to manage that column. Is it possible to make NHibernate automatically update the UpdatedDT column when the row is updated? I suppose I could try mapping the UpdatedDT property to be of type timestamp, but that have other side effects.

• Mysql: Convert DB from local time to UTC

  I need to convert an existing (datetime fields) db from local time ut UTC. The values are stored ad datetimes on a server with time zone CET (+1) (with summertime +2). When selecting data I use UNIX_TIMESTAMP(), which magically compensates for everything, ie, time zone shift and dst (if i've read the docs right). I'm moving the db to a new server with UTC as system time. Simply subtracting -1 H won't work, as summer time is +2. Any ideas for a clever way to do this? (using sql or some script lang)

  Is there an XPath way of recovering directly one specific attribute of preceding sibling nodes of an XML node using an XPath query? • How to control order of assignment for new identity column in SQL Server?

  I have a table with CreateDate datetime field default(getdate()) that does not have any identity column. I would like to add identity(1,1) field that would reflect same order of existing records as CreateDate field (order by would give same results). How can I do that ? I guess if I create clustered key on CreateDate field and then add identity column it will work (not sure if it's guaranteed), is there a good/better way ? I am interested in SQL Server 2005, but I guess the answer will be the same for SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2000.

  'm using to Exhibit to, pretty simply, display some data on historical events and book publication dates: http://f1shw1ck.com/timeline3/exhibit.html Everything works fine, and I have been able to get the timeline running as wanted, until I try to take control of the timeline with a timelineConfig script. After I add this, my timeline continues to work as expected on all browsers, except for IE. Curiously enough, band 0 initializes and is rendered correctly, but band 1 shows no events and does not sync to the band above. But it is picking up the width: 10%", intervalUnit: Timeline.DateTime.DECADE, intervalPixels: 60 specifications, as they are rendered correctly. Since everything works until I call ex:configuration="timelineConfig", since everything works in the other browsers, and since everything almost works in IE, up to the event painting, I have to imagine this is a javascript coding error on my part, but I just can't see it. All I get in my console is Failed to create view View As Timeline." Incidentally, having or not having the gotoYear function seemingly does nothing to change... Thanks for any tips.

What I'm currently doing is Time, and i want it to be displayed in a maybe, little be special way.. like this.. today, 14:12 yesterday, 15:34 27/12, 15:24 i have this in my code = news.entry_published.strftime("%d/%m, %H:%M") That gives me an error saying undefined method `strftime' for "2010-12-30 19:26:00.000000":String And it dosn't do what i want with the days.. Edit: - @date = DateTime.strptime(news.entry_published, "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S") = @date.strftime("%d/%m, %H:%M") Now works, and gives this output 30/12, 19:26 But i still have to check if it is today, yesterday or just another day.   I'm trying to change the color of write-host output based on the lastrunoutcome property of SQL Server jobs in Powershell....as in...if a job was successfull, the output of lastrunoutcome is "Success" in green....if failed, then "Failed" in red. I have the script working to get the desired job status...I just don't know how to change the colors.   Hi. I have an issue with System.Threading.Timer. I am scheduling some actions using a time in a windows service. The timer starts executing the callback after a specified dueTime period. The windows service starts up after reboot automatically. However, I have observed a strange thing after a system reboot- the callback method starts executing itself 3 or 4 minutes before the specified period. What might be the reason for such behavior? Here is the sample code: TimeSpan timeToWait = this.StartTime - DateTime.Now; Int64 msToSleep = (Int64)Math.Round(timeToWait.TotalMilliseconds); _timer = new Timer(callback_method, null, msToSleep, MinutesScheduledInterval * 60000); where _timer is a member variable, StartTime - the time when the timer should first fire.

• Best way to store and deliver files on a CMS

  Hi all.. First of all, this isn't another question about storing images on DB vs file system. I'm already storing the images on the file system. I'm just struggling to find a better way to show them to all my users. I' currently using this system. I generate a random filename using md5(uniqueid()), the problem that I'm facing, is that the image is then presented with a link like this: <img src="/_Media/0027a0af636c57b75472b224d432c09c.jpg" /> As you can see this isn't the prettiest way to show a image ( or a file ), and the name doesn't say anything about the image. I've been working with a CMS system at work, that stores all uploaded files on a single table, to access that image it uses something like this: <img src="../getattachment/94173104-e03c-499b-b41c-b25ae05a8ee1/Menu-1/Escritorios.aspx?width=175&height=175" /> As you can see the path to the image, now has a meaning compared to the other one, the problem is that this put's a big strain in the DB, for example, in the last site I made, I have an area that has around 60 images, to show the 60 images, I would have to do at least 60 individual query's to the database, besides the other query's to retrieve the various content on the page. I think you understand my dilemma, has anyone gone trough this problem, that can give me some pointers on how to solve this? Thanks..

• Drupal Views api, add simple argument handler

  Background: I have a complex search form that stores the query and it's hash in a cache. Once the cache is set, I redirect to something like /searchresults/e6c86fadc7e4b7a2d068932efc9cc358 where that big long string on the end is the md5 hash of my query. I need to make a new argument for views to know what the hash is good for. The reason for all this hastle is because my original search form is way to complex and has way to many arguments to consider putting them all into the path and expecting to do the filtering with the normal views arguments. Now for my question. I have been reading views 2 documentation but not figuring out how to accomplish this custom argument. It doesn't seem to me like this should be as hard as it seems to me like it must be. Leaving aside any knowledge of the veiws api, it would seem that all I need is a callback function that will take the argument from the path as it's only argument and return a list of node id's to filter to. Can anyone point me to a solution or give me some example code? Thanks for your help! You guys are great. PS. I am pretty sure that my design is the best I can come up with, lets don't get off my question and into cross checking my design logic if we can help it.

• How should child views of UIScrollView report their bounds for contentSize?

  I'm looking more for advice on the correct design for a view. What I have is a UIScrollView that contains one or more custom Views I have created. My problem is, who reports to the scrollview what it's contentSize should be? I have the following: UIView +-UIScrollView +-CustomView 1 with dynamic height depending on data +-CustomView 2 with dynamic Height depending on data The UIViewController creates new instances of the custom views with data and then adds them as subviews to the UIScrollView. The problem I'm having is how to set the value of the scrollview's contentSize? Right now, I'm not doing that and the contents of the scrollview are clipped with no scrolling possible. Should the custom view call [parent setContentSize:] in its drawRect:? Should the UIViewController query the custom view after creation to get its bounds and then call setContentSize? Should I subclass the UIScrollView to override addSubView to query each subview's height? Is there something else I'm missing? I hope I explained that properly. I'm new to this and still getting a handle on things.
