• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

  i'm trying to figure out why my apache2 reverse proxy doesn't work... hope someone can clarify. i'm using an apache server as a gateway with proxy pass: 10.184.1.2 is the IP. these are PP instructions i inserted in the 000-default config file. ProxyPass / http://192.168.102.31/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.102.31/ the host 192.168.102.31 is an internal IP of a subnet wich is not reachable directly by clients, but only by the apache gateway. when i try to access such a address: http://apache_gateway_name/dir i see the client trying to reach 192.168.102.31 address and of course timeout occurs. can someone help? • Installing the AMD Proprietary Drivers broke my 12.10 desktop

  I decided to download and install the AMD Legacy Catalyst driver 12.6 from AMD's website. I ran the .run file and the GUI below in the second image appeared and I install it that way. On reboot, I saw the below first image, though I managed to open Firefox by Open the pictures by right click Open As. No windows, buttons, or launcher / environment. It took some time but I figured out how to remove the driver and got back to normal on the default open source drivers I had before. Purged the old drivers and reconfigured xorg to make sure. How should I be going about installing the AMD made drivers? Is it even compatible with Ubuntu 12.10 yet? And if so would I even need it for 3D heavy applications like Team Fortress 2, or other game applications? I didn't install Ubuntu just for Steam, I've been using it on and off for a few years. Valve has mentioned that they are working on graphics drivers with NVIDA, AMD, and Intel. Nvidia released their new driver on Steam Linux beta release. Is AMD supposed to also have a new driver coming out soon? I'm using an ATi Radeon HD 4850 1GB. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right.   Where are these system proxy settings? I noticed my connection has been slow for a while, then I checked the connection settings and was surprised there were set a proxy, but I cant see what exactly it is using. Where can I check which IP it was routing the connection for me ? Here is what I saw from Firefox (12.0) options: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4370/sysproxy.png As far as I can remember, it has always been "no proxy" and not "system proxy". Unless new firefox version has set that "system proxy" to default?

• Postgresql init.d script not working

  I installed Postgresql 8.4 on my VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. Default setup, nothing unusual. After the installation the dbserver is automatically started and is running great. The installer also sets a init.d script in place. This script however, doesn't seem to affect Postgres. $ sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql stop The above line is not stopping the server. The command does not fail or show any message. The logs won't say anything as well. After killing all postgres processes with killall I cannot get Postgres working again using the init script. When rebooting my VPS it somehow starts up and works again.

Turns out by default, none of the VS built-in services are exposed to MEF, apparently because there wasn't enough time to analyze the lifetime, initialization, dependencies, etc. for each one before launch, which makes perfect sense.   I have an old speedtouch usb modem (revision 0) and on my desktop with xubuntu 12.04 I've configured a pppoe connection. I can connect and my ISP assign an IP address and the DNS but the primary DNS address is not reachable by ping, the secondary yes but no address is resolved then I can't surf the web. Then I want to set the open DNS but there is bo way, if I change manually /etc/resolv.conf it is rewrited by some script (there is the flag usepeerdns on the configuration script, if I exclude it there is no way to assign any DNS server because resolv.conf is not read) also if I set not writable the file changing the default permission. I changed dhclient.conf with the code prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220; and now if I connect by a wifi connection to my router I'm using openDNS server but ppp does not use this script as long as I can see and the DNS server is always setted by my ISP. How can I use set DNS manually to a PPP connection? Is there any way to change it after the connection? Why NetworkManager is not able to manage my dsl connection, it seems not able to manage the dsl usb cable modem. If I use pppoeconf NetworkManager doesn't start and I have to manually delete the lines added to /etc/network/interfaces because the system is not able to start with full configuration of network If I connect a modem-router to the same line I can surf with the DNS server assigned by my ISP, I can't figure why. • Debugging Node.js applications for Windows Azure

  In case you are developing a new web application with Node.js for Windows Azure, you might notice there is no easy way to debug the application unless you are developing in an integrated IDE like Cloud9. For those that develop applications locally using a text editor (or WebMatrix) and Windows Azure Powershell for Node.js, it requires some steps not documented anywhere for the moment. I spent a few hours on this the other day I practically got nowhere until I received some help from Tomek and the rest of them. The IISNode version that currently ships with the Windows Azure for Node.js SDK does not support debugging by default, so you need to install the IISNode full version available in the github repository.  Once you have installed the full version, you need to enable debugging for the web application by modifying the web.config file <iisnode debuggingEnabled="true" loggingEnabled="true" devErrorsEnabled="true" /> The xml above needs to be inserted within the existing “<system.webServer/>” section. The last step is to open a WebKit browser (e.g. Chrome) and navigate to the URL where your application is hosted but adding the segment “/debug” to  the end. The full URL to the node.js application must be used, for example, http://localhost:81/myserver.js/debug That should open a new instance of Node inspector on the browser, so you can debug the application from there.   I'm running a FreeBSD 9.0 setup as a virtual machine in a KVM setup. In previous versions of FreeBSD it was common to force the kern.hz setting to a lower value so that the virtual machine does not keep the host busy because it's handling timer interrupts without having any work to do - the FreeBSD Handbook explains: The most important step is to reduce the kern.hz tunable to reduce the CPU utilization of FreeBSD under the Parallels environment. This is accomplished by adding the following line to /boot/loader.conf: kern.hz=100 Without this setting, an idle FreeBSD Parallels guest OS will use roughly 15% of the CPU of a single processor iMac®. After this change the usage will be closer to a mere 5%. However, in FreeBSD 9, the "dynamic tick mode" (aka "tickless mode") is the default, controlled by the kern.eventtimer.periodic setting which defaults to 0 (read: tickless mode). This makes me wonder - does the tip of lowering kern.hz still have any relevance for making FreeBSD 9 play nicely in a virtual machine setup?

  I found myself in need of exporting PowerPoint slides from a presentation and was fairly excited when I found that you could save them off in standard image formats.   I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?

• How to give a Linux user permission to create backups, but not permission to delete them?

  I want to set up automated backups that are kept safe from myself (in case a virus pwns me). The problem is the "create" and "delete" permissions are the same thing: write permission. So what can I do about it? Is it possible to decouple the create/delete permissions? Another option could be to let the user "root" make the backups. The problem is my home directory is encrypted, and I don't want to backup everything. Any ideas? For the backups I'm using Deja Dup, which is installed by default in Fedora and Ubuntu.

• My Music Folder Appearing On Desktop

  Hello, I use Windows 7 and have recently been encountering a problem with the My Music folder. I keep all my music on an external hard drive and use a third party program such as VLC to play albums. I also have a large list of single MP3s that I play in WinAmp. Neither of these cause any problem but whenever I play a song in the bundled Windows Media Player a new My Music shortcut appears on the desktop. WMP is my default player, I've tried changing it to other players but whenever I use WMP it still creates this shortcut. The My Music folder is empty as all music is stored on the external hard drive and I've set WMP to collate, store and retain no information about anything, so I don't think it's anything to do with playlist history or anything. Any ideas what might be happening? Any help in solving this annoyance is appreciated.

• Terminal app on Mac OS X - normal keys

  There are some default terminal things different for the Mac (for example, Command C to copy and Command V to paste rather than simply highlighting/right clicking). These are fine with me. What bothers me though is I can't figure out how to click or use the F keys. The main app I have problems with is htop. Htop supports clicking on column names to sort, etc. Also, to exit the app, you are supposed to press F10. But F10 simply mutes my volume. I've tried different combinations of things like alt F10. I usually have to quit htop by pressing CTRL-C Any ideas on how to get normal terminal behaviors? Normal meaning linux
