• Intermittent temporary GUI freeze in Ubuntu 11.10

  I've been using Ubuntu 11.10 for a month or so. In the last week it's started freezing randomly (every few hours or minutes). I can still move the mouse and switch to other terminals with ctrl+alt. I thought this was purely a gui issue as I could continue entering commands (mouse clicks and keys) which seem to be processed once the system resumes (generally 30 seconds to a few minutes). I'm using gnome and metacity. I can't identify anything in particular that triggers the freezes. Saving a file in LibreOffice causes the system to hang. I tried disabling most of the services I've installed (dropbox, autokey, etc.) but doesn't help. Switching to another terminal and running top, the CPU column is shared equally among all of my processes (i.e. non-root). I have no idea what that signifies. My PC is unusable in this state. Edit: I notice that my virtual computer (win7 64 on virtualbox) continues to respond most of the time during these 'freezes' Edit2: I suspect this is something to do with UI priority being too low... but I don't know enough about linux to know how to address that.

  There are actually 3 errors here. When I open Word, I get: Word cannot open the existing global template. () If I create a file, type a character and try to save to the desktop (that I have no problems writing to otherwise), I get: Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected. Try one or more of the following: * Free more memory * Make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected, or damaged. () I am just saving to the desktop, and I can save excel files (or anything else) there. After the failure, if I save again, the default file name becomes: .doc...doc Weird. Finally, when I close word completely, I get: Do you want to replace the existing Normal.dotm.

  Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

  Dhcpd running on Linux gets a dhcp request over dhcrelay which is running on other remote machine. However reply does not go to the requesting dhcrelay external IP(192.168.0.81). Instead, it goes to the internal interface IP of machine running dhcrelay. And I think because of this remote machine running dhcrelay or the dhcrealy itself discarding packet. It seems (of course) is should also listen to external interface for replies. It appears it is not important where the packet destined to. dhrelay will forward it to internal net. HOWEVER, I have deleted route on dhcpd server to reach 172.16.17.x subnet. It again tries to send reply to 172.16.17.81. • Hybrid Graphics on Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot

  Alright, so here's the situation: I am using an ASUS UL80VT with two graphics cards: Integrated intel graphics and NVIDIA G210M I was running an Ubuntu 12.04 - Windows 7 dual boot (on separate partitions).The machine worked perfectly (including the display drivers) without me needing to install anything special or change any settings. However, my hard drive was corrupted and I lost all my data yesterday, so after it was replaced, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64x again after installing Windows 7. I booted up Ubuntu after installation, and noticed it was by default using Unity 2D... Gnome 3.4 wasn't working properly either, so I guessed that the NVIDIA G210M driver wasn't installed/working and the OS was instead using the integrated graphics. I checked the "Additional Drivers" thing, but there were no proprietary drivers listed there, so I went to the NVIDIA website, downloaded the driver directly and installed it. I restarted, but there was no change. After this, I read somewhere that I should change my SATA in the BIOS to "Compatible" rather than "Enhanced". This worked fine and fixed the problem (both Unity and Gnome were working perfectly) but then when I tried booting up Windows 7, I recieved the BSOD. So I changed it back to Enhanced, and once again, the NVIDIA 210M graphics isn't working on Ubuntu, but on Windows 7 it is. I do not want to keep changing from Enhanced to Compatible every time I reboot to Ubuntu and neither do I want to simply just use one OS. Note that NVIDIA 210M and integrated graphics work perfectly on Windows 7. Also, I don't care about switching between them, I just want to be able to use the NVIDIA one. What can I do so that both Windows 7 and Ubuntu work and NVIDIA G210M works on Ubuntu?

  I have been convinced (over at stackoverflow) to use my beloved bash in vi mode. So far I got used to it quite well and I like it. However I really do miss one feature: In emacs-mode, you can enter the last parameter of the previous command by pressing "ESC ." (That is, press escape followed by the .) Is there a default binding to insert the last parameter in vi-mode? I wasn't able to find one and I really miss this command... Thanks a lot

• How to revert back to older xorg?

  Since the last update of ubuntu 12.04, the system won't boot into gui anymore. It states that it was unable to load the graphics drivers and gives me 4 options, these are: run in low graphics mode for 1 session reconfigure graphics troubleshoot the error exit to console login whichever option I choose, it doesn't solve anything. For instance, when i choose to reconfigure graphics and then switch to vesa drivers, the screen goes back to the option list. So i configured xorg.conf to vesa myself, and i see in the update history that ubuntu updated xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common whereas i blocked these updates in synaptic since i'm aware that updating these files caused troubles with my particular video card (radeon hd6800). So my solution is probably to revert these files to the older (working) versions.   I came across an interesting situation recently where a SQL instance had been configured with the Audit of successful and failed logins being written to the errorlog. ie This meant… every time a user or the application connected to the SQL instance – an entry was written to the errorlog. This meant…  huge SQL Server errorlogs. On a few occasions I've accidentally opened a blank vim file with some complex bash command I was writing. Awesome. How do I get the newly written line in vim back into bash?   In Windows 7 you can pin a document to a program in the taskbar. I pinned an .xls document to Calc, but when I click on the shortcut I get the following error: soffice.bin - System Error The program can't start because sal3.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem. I got the same error when I pinned a .txt file to Writer. I tried repairing Open Office, as suggested by the error, but that didn't fix the problem. Any ideas? Is sal3.dll part of something that isn't installed by default?

  I did an dist-upgrade on Debian Wheezy yesterday and got an error with syslog-nc-core. I found that i should try to reinstall it and tried but it ended with an error that apache2 isnt configured.   I somehow configured my Mac to route all requests for a particular IP Name (sample.com) to the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Now I'm trying to remove this, but can't determine where to do it. There is no entry for it under /etc/hosts. The routing table shows that it is mapping the IP Name to the IP address of the Mac. • Apache not using the right SSL certificate [on hold]

  In my apache2 setup, I have one VirtualHost for my main site, and another for a static content site, like downloads, css, etc. I have ssl certificates for both, and the static content one is under a subdomain of the main site. I have configured the four virtualhosts altogether, as both sites need SSL ones as well. When I only had 1 SSL site, everything was OK, but now with the second, the first site uses the second site's certificate, even though it is told specifically to use its own in the VirtualHost section. I honestly have no idea why apache would do this. Any ideas? I have a feeling there may be some default/global setting or something that are set for some odd reason. I am using different IPs for the Virtual hosts.

• Belkin router issue

  Hi, My cousin and I bought a wireless Belkin router for testing purposes. Please keep in mind for all of our tests there is no ethernet cable plugged in, just the router's power cord. We have been trying to "flood" it with PING requests on its default address 192.168.2.1, but it isn't doing a thing; not even logging any attempts of too many requests. I've disabled the firewall, disabled PING request block, etc. Any idea why this thing isn't being affected? We sent 4 million packets and it hasn't done a thing. Quite odd! Thanks.

• SQL 2005 wont fully uninstall

  Hi all, I am trying to uninstall my default instance of SQL Server 2005 from my Windows 7 machine but having a few problems. Everything uninstalls as it should using Add/Remove programs but for some reason I am still left with the ‘SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)’ service installed and have no way of getting rid of it. I have tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 and uninstall, followed the following Microsoft kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 which uses the ARPWrapper.exe /Remove switch, but still the service exists. I want to get rid of every service so I can start with a clean install of named instances of SQL2005 and SQL2008. Any help would be appreciated. Cragly

• Use TV (hdmi) with non-square pixels

  I am having a problem when I connect my LG plasma tv (with a native resolution of 1024x768 pixels) to my 12.04 laptop. The pixels (actual pixels, not the signal) of my TV are stretched so it gets his 16:9 ratio. The pixels are rectangular (1.3333x1). Everything I display from my laptop oviously get stretched (4:3 stretched to 16:9). There is a different dpi in X and Y needed for it to display properly (some kind of anamorphic mode). Default Ubuntu uses a dpi of 96x96. I can change it using xrandr, but only square eg 100x100 or 70x70. Already looked here, but it seems Ubuntu totally ignore the displaySize in xorg.conf When I use the code below to see the dpi and nothing I do changes it. The displaySize also stays the same (calculated using 96 dpi and the resolution) xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution I use the propretary ATI drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 50xx but it is the same with the Radeon drivers. My temporary solution is to use: xrandr --output DFP1 --mode 1024x768 --scale 1.333333333333x1 --output LVDS --off But with this the right side of the screen is nog accesable. This is a known problem with xrandr --scale and ubuntu. This is because of a patch for the mouse/windows not going outside the screen. I search a way to change the DisplaySize or the dpi(to something not square like 128x96) when I connect the display.
