  • Waiting for a subset of threads in a Java ThreadPool

    Let's say I have a thread pool containing X items, and a given task employs Y of these items (where Y is much smaller than X). I want to wait for all of the threads of a given task (Y items) to finish, not the entire thread pool. If the thread pool's execute() method returned a reference to the employed thread I could simply join() to each of these Y threads, but it doesn't. Does anyone know of an elegant way to accomplish this? Thanks.

  • Manually Increasing the Amount of CPU a Java Application Uses

    I've just made a program with Eclipse that takes a really long time to execute. It's taking even longer because it's loading my CPU to 25% only (I'm assuming that is because I'm using a quad-core and the program is only using one core). Is there any way to make the program use all 4 cores to max it out? Java is supposed to be natively multi-threaded, so I don't understand why it would only use 25%.

  • priority_queue with dynamic priorities

    Hey, I have a server application which accepts incomming queries and executes them. If there are too many queries they should be queued and if some of the other queries got executed the queued queries should be executed as well. Since I want to pass queries with different priorities I think using a priority_queue would be the best choice. e.g. The amout of the axcepting queries (a) hit the limt and new queries will be stored in the queue. All queries have a priority of 1 (lowest) if some of the queries from (a) get executed the programm will pick the query with the highest priority out of the queue and execute it. Still no problem. Now someone is sending a query with a priority of 5 which gets added to the queue. Since this is the query with the highest priority the application will execute this query as soon as the running queries no longer hit the limit. There might be the worst case that 500 queries with a priority of 1 are queued but wont be executed since someone is always sending queries with a priority of 5 hence these 500 queries will be queued for a looooong time. In order to prevent that I want to increase the prioritiy of all queries which have a lower priority than the query with the higher priority, in this example which have a priority lower than 5. So if the query with a priority of 5 gets pulled out of the queue all other queries with a priority < 5 should be increased by 0.2. This way queries with a low priority wont be queued for ever even if there might be 100 queries with a higher priority.   • Writing own Unix shell in C - Problems with PATH and execv

    I'm writing my own shell in C. It needs to be able to display the users current directory, execute commands based on the full path (must use execv), and allow the user to change the directory with cd. This IS homework. The teacher only gave us a basic primer on C and a very brief skeleton on how the program should work. Since I'm not one to give up easily I've been researching how to do this for three days, but now I'm stumped. This is what I have so far: Displays the user's username, computername, and current directory (defaults to home directory). Prompts the user for input, and gets the input Splits the user's input by " " into an array of arguments Splits the environment variable PATH by ":" into an array of tokens I'm not sure how to proceed from here. I know I've got to use the execv command but in my research on google I haven't really found an example I understand. For instance, if the command is bin/ls, how does execv know the display all files/folders from the home directory? How do I tell the system I changed the directory? I've been using this site a lot which has been helpful: http://linuxgazette.net/111/ramankutty.html but again, I'm stumped. Thanks for your help. Let me know if I should post some of my existing code, I'm wasn't sure if it was necessary though.

  • xdebug profiler output strange results

    I'm using xdebug to profile some PHP code on Windows and using WinCacheGrind/Webgrind to analyse the output, but I'm getting some strange results. Specifically, the total cumulative time for a single method is greater than 100%! How is it possible that more time is spent executing this function's code and all the functions that it calls than the total time it took to execute the whole script? What am I missing here?

  • How do I call an upside down jQuery.slideDown()?

    In the web app I'm working on I want to do a little slide up notification, like on twitter or your desktop. jQuery's .slideDown does exactly what I want, but it's upside down. The .slideUp doesn't execute an upside down version of slideDown. Instead it hides stuff, like after your cleaning up an old message you've displayed with slideDown. So what's the simplest code to do an upside down slideDown() in jQuery?

    I have the following query: SELECT MAX([LastModifiedTime]) FROM Workflow There are approximately 400M rows in the Workflow table. There is an index on the LastModifiedTime column as follows: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_Workflow_LastModifiedTime] ON [dbo].[Workflow] ( [LastModifiedTime] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, DROP_EXISTING = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 100) The above query takes 1.5 minutes to execute. Why wouldn't SQL Server use the above index and simply retrieve the last row in the index to get the maximum value? Thanks.

I know that Oracle has the concept of a web/HTTP trigger, where you can execute an HTTP GET from the Oracle instance itself to a URL that can then handle the request at the application layer. I'm wondering if Postgres (v. 9.0.5) has the same feature, or comes with anything similar (and, subsequently, how to set it up/configure it)?

  • SVN Export while retaining permissions

    Hey all- I have some files in my SVN repository that I would like to have execute permissions. When I check them into the repository with 755 permissions and run an svn export, the resulting files have 644 permissions. There doesn't appear to be an option in "svn export" to retain the permissions. Am I missing something? Thanks- Jonathan

  • Quick introduction to Linux needed [closed]

    Hi guys! I have to get into Linux ASAP and realy mean ASAP. I have installed Cygwin but as allways - things dont go as easy as one would like. First problem i enconter was - i choose KDE package, but there is no sign of KDE files anywhere in cygwin folder. How do i run KDE windows. Currently startx fires, but all looks ugly! My desire is to download and run Qt Creator. Seems that there is no cygwin package, but downloading source and compiling is good to go. Only that i have forgoten every linux command i ever knew! :D Please - what are default commands u use on linux? What does exec do? what ./ stands for? What is directory strucutre and why there is such mess in bin folder? Thanks god - i have windows over cygwin, so downloading files is not a problem, but again -how do i unpack them in linux style and how to i build? simply issue "make" command from folder, where i extracted files? Please help!

I am wondering if there is a way (for error checking purposes) to test if a method exists without trying to execute it.
