  • Memory Regions displayed in SMAPS output with no permissions

    If I see the output of cat /proc//smaps, I find that there are some memory regions with which no read/write/execute permissions have been associated. Also these region are mapped to inode number 0. I wanted to know how does a region end up in such a state? Is it some sort of memory leak? Can these regions be ever used again by the process?

    If I need a php-page to have access to upload images and move images from a folder on the server, what permissions would I set on the folder then? I know we have "Owner", "Group", and "Others". But what does the server (or the php-code itself) count as? Owner? Also, would I need to set the php-page with the upload script with some specific permissions to be able to upload the files?     I'm trying to generate some sql files in my java application. The application will not execute any sql statements, just generate a file with sql statements and save it. I'd like to use the java.sql.PreparedStatement to create my statements so that i don't have to validate every string etc. with my own methods. Is there a way to use the PreparedStatement without the calling java.sql.Connection.prepareStatement(String) function, because I don't have a java.sql.Connection?

    I have an applet which creates music using the JFugue API and plays it for the user. It allows the user to input a music phrase which the piece will be based on, or lets them choose to have a phrase generated randomly. I had been using the following method (successfully) to simply stop and start the music, which runs in a thread using the Player class from JFugue. Basically, the idea is to make it simulate "real time" adjustments to the generated music for the user. Well, I have been beating my head against the wall on this for a couple of weeks. I've read all the standard java documentation, researched, read, and searched forums, and I have tried many different ideas, none of which have succeeded. The problem I've run into with all approaches I've tried is that when I start the new thread with the new, updated musical pattern, all the old threads ALSO start, and there is a cacophony of unintelligible noise instead of my desired output. From what I've gathered, the issue seems to be that all the methods I've come across require that the thread is able to periodically check the value of a "flag" variable and then shut itself down from within its "run" block in response to that variable. However, since my thread makes a call that takes several minutes minimum to execute (playing the music), and I need to terminate it WHILE it is executing this, there is really no safe way to do so. So, I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing when it comes to threads, or if perhaps I can accomplish my goal using a totally different approach. Any ideas or guidance is greatly appreciated!     I'm required to use a special library to keep track of my memory leaks where malloc()= allocate( ) and free( ) = unallocate( ). I'm trying to complete free a linked-list but it seems like the "root" value isn't being freed. typedef struct _node { struct _node *child; char *command; } Command_list; void delete_commands(Command_list **root) { Command_list *temp; while( *root != NULL ){ temp = (*root)->child; //printf("STRING: %s\n", *root->command ); unallocate( *root ); *root = temp; } } The function that's calling it void file_processing( .... ){ Command_list *root = allocate(sizeof (Command_list)); root = NULL; .... delete_commands( &root ); } } I believe that Command_list *root = allocate(sizeof (Command_list)) isn't being properly de-allocated for some reason. Anyone can give me some hints? UPDATE: I found out that instead of Command_list *root = allocate(sizeof (Command_list)); root = NULL; this works: Command_list *root = NULL;

In other words, if I scripted out alter statements for all procedures and functions in a database, I'd like to know which of these statements are going to fail? I've been working on cleaning up a database I've inherited which has gone through years of changes and I'd like to what objects are going to raise errors when something tries to execute it.
