• What is an alternative to ADO.NET, but elegant way in C# to read Excel files

  ADO.NET just fails miserably when it's used to read Excel files where a column contains mixed data types. It appears that it tries to determine the data type of a column, and then assume the rest of the entire column is of the same data type.   I'm trying out StreamInsight and I came across a problem with a query I need. I'm trying to throw a warning if there are several changes in my measured values (of up to 20% change) in the last 30 minutes. This is the query I came up with for now but it isn't working and it's not even correct I think. Since I subtract the mean of a, I expected the mean of a^3 to be zero as well. Does the problem lie in the random number generator, the precision of the numerical values in my misunderstanding of the concepts of mean and expected value?

• Write a dll that is accessable from VS 2003 VC++ code

  I need to be able to write a DLL in either C# or VC++ that is accessible from code that is written in Visual Studio 2003 VC++. It looks like the code is unmanaged (uses * for pointers) VC++ and this DLL needs to be able to drop right in and be accessed by the current code. The DLL is an RS232 driver that needs to be able to return an int for an error code and pass back, by reference, some measured values, to the calling program. Will I even be able to write this in C#? If not, I only have access to Visual Studio 2005 or 2008. Will I be able to write my code in either, and will that DLL be able to be called from the current code base? Or do I have to go looking on ebay for a copy of VS 2003?

  I'm trying to store XML in SQL 2005. I have a very simple table with an Id and a XML column. When the XML contains the attribute xmlns my searching doesn't work. This is my XML; insert into XMLTest (ItemXML) values ( '<MessageType> <ItemId id="ABC" xmlns="ss" /> <Subject>sub</Subject> </MessageType> ') And this is my Query; select itemid, ItemXML.query('(/MessageType/ItemId)') from XMLTest order by ItemId desc If I change the attribute xmlns to anything else my query works. I don't think I know enough about XML to understand what SQL is doing with the namespace. But it must be processing it and storing it differently maybe? Anyone had this issue?

• app.config - where should it go?

  This is a follow on from here: Storing database settings outside app.config So I know it's possible to have one app.config, with different sections externalised, all with different values. But are they like the web.config files in asp.net projects where you can just copy it into the same folder as the rest of the files and it will work, or do I need to compile it in somewhere. Also, won't it be overwritten by the .exe.config file? Edit Ok, so I worded this question a bit badly. I've updated it.

Data is populated in the dropdowns based on some logic from the master data tables and we know for sure that its a valid master data as far as web layer is concern. Now my question is, should be check the validity of the master data in service layer again because we want to use service layer for mulitple interfaces (Web User Interface, Web Services, Unit Test Cases etc.) or we should validate the master data in respective interfaces only.

• Ideas for Quick Hierarchical Listing - .NET

  I have a table in SQL Server listing corporate departments and their sections and subsections (3 levels). I would like to create some web-based listing of this, but similar to a TreeList. I was thinking to set up nested Ajax Accordions, but it was taking me way too long to put together. I would even settle for a GridView with non-repeating column values. Is there a way I can implement my idea without it taking me more than an hour or so for a newbie to complete? Any controls in ASP.NET or Ajax I can bind to would be great.

• Problems with mod_rewrite and 301 redirects from one dynamic url to another

  Hey all, I'm having all kinds of problems with a bunch of apache redirects just now and could really use some help! I'm wating to put in a 301 redirect for a load of urls from a client's old site to their new site in the following format; Old - page.php?pageNum_rs_all=0&totalRows_rs_all=112 New - page/sub?foo=bar The values in the query sting for the old site don't in any way tie up to any ids or references on the new site, I only want to match that specific request and redirect to the new page. It feels like I've tried just about every combination of rewriterule I can find online but still nothing seems to be working. This is running on Apache 2.2. The rule I started with (and keep going back to) is; RewriteRule ^/page.php\?pageNum_rs_all=0&totalRows_rs_all=112 /page/sub?foo=bar [R=301,L,NE] Any help would be greatly appreciated! c.

  Hi All, Sure, even I can do this... var testarray : array of string; setlength(testarray, 5); but if I want to get clever and have a procedure into which I pass the array by referance like this I cant do it! procedure DoStuffWithArray(var passedarray : array of string); begin setlength(passedarray, 5); end; compiler says 'incompatible types' on the single line of code in my proc. I can do other stuff on the array like set set element values if i do a setlength before i call the proc, but I cannot do the setlength in my proc, which is what I want to do. • How can I bind dynamic data to DataGridTemplateColun in code?

  I'm using DataGrid from CodePlex. I have objects (ICustomTypeDescriptor) that have properties 'name' 'description' 'c' 'd' and so on (the names are dynamic, and so is the value) and they have information behind them. I have templates for different types. And if I have to list the properties of a single element I can just bind to the values in xaml and use datatemplateselector (in datagridtemplatecolumn) which will pick the correct template. However, when I'm listing several of the elements, how can I use the selectors and the templates? How do I get the correct property bound to the template (two-way)? • How do I Benchmark RESTful Service with Variable Parameters?

  I'm currently working on benchmarking a RESTful service I've made, and part of that is making sure it runs in a reasonable amount of times for a large array of parameters. For example, let's say I have RESTful API of the form some_site.com/item?item_id=y. In that case to be sure my service is working as fast as I'd like it to work, I'd want to try out many values for y one by one, preferably coming from some text file. I can't figure out any way of doing this in ab or httperf. I'm open to using a different benchmarking program if I have, but would prefer something simple and light. What I want to do seems like something pretty standard, so I'm guessing there must already be a program that let's me do it, but an hour or so of googling hasn't gotten me an answer. Ideas?

• Gson serialization depending on field value

  I have a POJO that is similar to: public class MyGsonPojo { @Expose @SerializedName("value1") private String valueOne; @Expose @SerializedName("value2") private boolean valueTwo; @Expose @SerializedName("value3") private int valueThree; // Getters and other stuff here } The issue is that this object has to be serialized into a json body for a call to the server. Some fields are optional for the request and if I even send it with default and null values, the API responds differently (Unfortunately changing the api is not an option). So basically I need to exclude fields from serialization if any of them is set to a default value. For example if the field valueOne is null the resulting json should be: { "value2" : true, "value3" : 2 } Any idea how to make this a painless effort? I wouldn't want to build the json body manually. Any help would be great. Thank you in advice.

  I've seen in WPF where you can bind control values to properties of other controls. How is that binding accomplished in C++? For example, if I have a class called Car and a guage control called RPM, how do I tie the value of RPM to the member variable Car.RPM, so that when Car.RPM changes, it is automatically (as in without a specific update call coded by me) reflected by the RPM control? General answers or directions to pertinent resources would be fine also, as I'm just beginning to dabble in C++ and haven't had much Google luck with this particular question.

  Is there a way to access the full SQL query, including the values, inside my code? I am able to log SQL queries using log4net: <logger name="NHibernate.SQL" additivity="false"> <level value="ALL"/> <appender-ref ref="NHibernateSQLFileLog"/> </logger> However, I would like to find a way to log SQL queries from the code also. This way I will log the specific SQL query that causes an exception in my try/catch statement. Right now I have to data-mine the SQLFileLog to find the query that caused the exception when an exception occurs and it is not efficient.
