• Where in a typical rendering pipeline does visibility and shading occur?

  I am taking a computer graphics course. The book and the lecture notes are vague on the on the order of flow between the different steps in the rendering process. For example, if we have specified a view in a scene, and then want to perform a projection transformation for that given view, then we have to go through a sequence of transformations. In the end we end up with a normalized "viewcube" ready to be mapped 2D after clipping. But why do we end up with a cube (ie 3D thing), when a projection results in projecting the 3D objects to 2D. (depth information is lost?) The other line of reasoning is that all information further needed is stored within the "cube" and that visibility detection and shading is performed with respect to this cube and then we perform rasterezation.

  I'm trying to write a Java formula based on this tutorial: 2-D elastic collisions without Trigonometry. I am in the section "Elastic Collisions in 2 Dimensions". In step 1, it mentions "Next, find the unit vector of n, which we will call un. This is done by dividing by the magnitude of n". My below code represents the normal vector of 2 objects (I'm using a simple array to represent the normal vector), but I am not really sure what the tutorial means by dividing the magnitude of n to get the un. int[] normal = new int[2]; normal[0] = ball2.x - ball1.x; normal[1] = ball2.y - ball1.y; Can anyone please explain what un is, and how I can calculate it with my array in Java?

  I'm looking at how I can change the representation of a payload at runtime for varied potential advantages, but I'm not sure how to do it. Specifically collections. Array of Pairs [{ <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ...}] Array of Objects [<entity>,...] Array of Resources [<resource_uri>] Map of entities { <resource_uri> : { <entity> }, ... } My problem is, I'm not sure if I should put these different representations of the sets at different URI's, give them slightly varied mime types, e.g. application/foomap+json or perhaps use an optional query parameter ?format=map, or resource /entities/map. The UI is going to hide this, this is for programmatic web service access only (which the "UI's JS will have to call).

• Multithreaded game fails on SwapBuffers in render thread at exit

  The render loop and windows message loop run on separate threads. The way the program exits is that after PostQuitMessage is called in WM_DESTROY the message loop thread signals the render loop thread to exit. As far as I can tell before the render loop thread can even process the signal it tries SwapBuffers and that fails. My question, is there something about how Windows processes WM_DESTROY and WM_QUIT, in maybe DefWindowProc that causes various objects associated with rendering to go away even though I haven't explicitly deleted anything? And that would explain why the rendering thread is making bad calls at exit?

• No panels at all after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

  After upgrading to 12.4 from 10.4 on an AMD64 the situation is as follows: After booting I see the Xubuntu logo splash screen and when I log in I get an error that there is a system crash somewhere (it suggest to click on the notification icon, but no info appears then). FInally I can only see my initial 10.04 Desktop but I have no panels at all, so I can only click on my Desktop objects. Question: Will a clean re intall solve the problem? In such case will my multi partition configuration (Vista+XP+ubuntu partitions) be affected?

On the other hand I have doubts that these examples represent code of complex real world applications. In my code for instance I never add functions to bare objects but rather to their prototypes. Moreover the prototype feature is hidden from the user, suggesting classical OOP rather than idiomatic Javascript.   I have a class named GuestbookEntry that maps to the properties that are in the database table named "guestbook". Very simple! Originally, I had a static method named getActiveEntries() that retrieved an array of all GuestbookEntry objects. Each row in the guestbook table was an object that was added to that array. Then while learning how to properly design PHP classes, I learned some things: Static methods are not desirable. Separation of Concerns Single Responsibility Principle If the GuestbookEntry class should only be responsible for managing single guestbook entries then where should this getActiveEntries() method most properly go? Update: I am looking for an answer that complies with the SOLID acronym principles and allows for test-ability. That's why I want to stay away from static calls/standard functions. DAO, repository, ...? Please explain as though your explanation will be part of "Where to Locate FOR DUMMIES"... :-)
