  • Decorator Design Pattern Use With Service Objects (wSingleton)

    I'm working on a project where I need to add some functionality to a service object and using a decorator to add it in seems like a good fit. However, I've only ever used decorators with simple beans, never on a singleton like a service object. Has anyone ever done this before and what are the pros and cons? In this case I don't think creating a subclass will work so a decorator seems to be a good fit. What are your thoughts on doing this?

    Is it possible to move files from a network location that requires credentials to another network location that also requires credentials without mapping any drive.   • call_user_function_array() and __construct

    I'm working on a simple framework, and I'm having a slight problem. I'd like to use call_user_function_array() to pass parameters to a function. That's fine, except the function I want to pass it to is __construct. I can't create an instance of an object with cufa(), and by instantiating an object, and then using cufa to call that instance's __construct(), I run into problems with a broken class because I'm calling the constructor twice (and one time it's called wrong.)

  • Guilty of unsound programming

    I was reading Robert Rossney's entry on "What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?" found at: (What's the most unsound program you've had to maintain?) when I realized that I had inadvertently developed a near-identical application! The app consists of an HTTPListener object that grabs incoming POST requests. Based on the information in the header, I pass the body of the request to SQL Server to perform the appropriate transaction. The requests look like: <InvoiceCreate Control="389> <Invoice> <CustomerNumber>5555</CustomerNumber> <Total>300.00</Total> <RushOrder>1</RushOrder> </Invoice> </InvoiceCreate> Once it's received by the HTTPListener object, I perform the required INSERT to the Invoice table using SQL Server's built-in XML handling functionality via a stored procedure: INSERT INTO Invoice (InvoiceNumber, CustomerNumber, Total, RushOrder) SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER, @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/CustomerNumber)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)'), @XML.value('(InvoiceCreate/Invoice/Total)[1]', 'varchar(10)') I then use another SELECT statement in the same stored procedure to return the value of the new Invoice Number that was inserted into the Invoices table: SELECT @NEW_INVOICE_NUMBER FOR XML PATH 'InvoiceCreateAck' I then read the generated XML using a SQL data reader object in C# and use it as the response of the HTTPListener object. My issue is, I'm noticing that Robert is indeed correct. All of my application logic exists inside the stored procedure, so I find myself having to do a lot of error-checking (i.e. validating the customer number and invoicenumber values) inside the stored procedure. I'm still a midlevel developer, and as such, am looking to improve. Given the original post, and my current architecture, what could I have done differently to improve the application? Are there any patterns or best practices that I could refer to? What approach would you have taken? I'm open to any and all criticism, as I'd like to do my part to reduce the amount of "unsound programming" in the world.

Would it make more sense to store the data in a Singleton, or a Session object? What's the difference between the two? It would be really nice to be able to somehow scan the Framework or other DLL for functions that return a particular type of object.     I have a flat file source from Excel that has a structure like this: **People** Day1 Day2 Day3 Day4 Person1 someValue ... Person2 Person3 And i would like the package to put this information in a database with standard columns 'Person', 'Day', 'Value'. Does anybody know how to do this - at the moment because the days are going along the top, the package is assuming these are seperate data columns when they are not really and the mapping is not working.

    Reading this When a bean is a singleton, only one shared instance of the bean will be managed and all requests for beans with an id or ids matching that bean definition will result in that one specific bean instance being returned. Will be managed... What does that mean? If there's only one object, than any modification to this object will result in that every another attempt to get this bean will return a modified instance??
