  • Why is FTP server slowing down the web server?

    I am running Apache and Filezilla ftp server in Windows. I've been noticing for the last few months that whenever I start up the ftp server, the websites start to run slow. When I shut off the ftp server, the websites start speeding up again. Sometimes I need to restart Apache server after shutting off the ftp server to speed up the websites. I only start ftp server whenever I need to allow remote file transfers. Other than that it's always off. I'm not sure what's happening and where to look.

  • Why does my computer slow down so much when attaching Bluetooth dongle?

    I have a Bluetooth dongle and I plugged it into my work laptop (a Dell Latitude D830). Windows detects the Generic Bluetooth USB or similar and then proceeds to go incredibly slow with a process, avp.exe¹, taking 50% CPU. The System Idle process is getting most of the other 50% CPU and the avp.exe process is only at Normal priority. The machine doesn't seem to recover, so I had to turn the power off and reboot. Now, I haven't installed the drivers yet for the device, which I am doing now and I expect it to resolve the problem, so I am not asking how to fix this. I would rather know why Windows goes so slow in the first place. What is it trying to do and failing at so badly that it barely crawls? ¹ Part of Kaspersky Internet Security suite

  • Domain workstation acting up and I can't track it down.

    I have a developer with a Windows XP (SP2) 64 bit machine. If the machine is left on overnight (or any period of time longer than 5-6 hours) it takes 2-3 minutes to open any local drive and his network drives are no longer accessible.   • AD account locks out when using Outlook 2007?

    Hi, I/we have a problem with our Windows Server 2008 forest and Exchange. We are buying Exchange hosting from another firm and Exchange Server is in their Windows Server 2008 forest. So, we have two forests and there isn't any trusts between these two forests. Our own forest logon name is [email protected] and we also use the same email address to logon to the Exchange mailbox. Everything works fine if both our AD account and Exchange mailbox account have the same password, but if the passwords don't match, our AD account gets locked out. I have tried to figure out why Outlook sends false logon attemps to our AD. If someone can help, please do.

  • After adding a SSD to my MacBook, the HD never spins down.

    I added a SSD to my MacBook Pro 17 as the primary drive attached to the SATA controller. I moved the HD to the optical bay using the OptiBay from MCE Technologies which I use for my home directory. The problem I have encountered is the HD seems to never stop spinning. I have modified the sleep settings, hoping one of the various options would solve my problem without success. Any suggestions for me?

  • Solaris 10 invalid ARP requests from 0.0.0.0? Link up/down every hour or 2

    The guys at the data center where I'm hosting a server running Solaris 10 are telling me that my server is making a lot of invalid arp requests. This is an example of a portion of what was sent to me from the logs (with Mac addresses and IP addresses changed). [mymacaddress]/0.0.0.0/0000.0000.0000/[myipaddress]/[Datestamp]) It's being logged every hour. I don't see anything in the arp tables (arp -a) or routing tables (netstat -r) and I don't see anything relating to 0.0.0.0 when snoping the arp requests. The only place I see any reference to 0.0.0.0 is if I do netstat -a for the SCTP SCTP: Local Address Remote Address Swind Send-Q Rwind Recv-Q StrsI/O State ------------------------------- ------------------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------- ----------- 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0 102400 0 32/32 CLOSED But not really sure what that means. Doesn't seem like I can disable SCTP. There are some tunable SCTP parameters but it's not something I'm familiar with. Do I have to add changes to /etc/system? Looks like sctp_heartbeat_interval might be what I need to change? If it makes any difference, I have a few solaris zones running on this server, each with their own IP address on a virtual interface. eth0:0, eth0:1, etc. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to stop it? I think the switch I'm connected to doesn't like it and momentarily drops the connection. Is there anyway to at least block those requests using ipfilter or something else? Update: This was happening more frequently but now it seems to be happening roughly every hour or every two hours. It's not consistent. I tried setting setting the link speed and duplex to match the switch port and that seemed to make it stop happening for a few hours but then it started again.

    I have a problem with my Windows installation running very slow and my Windows folder being too large. I thought that the problems are related. My Windows folder is 17.4 GB I have 1807 folders totalling 2.4 GB that are prefaced with a $. My System32 folder is 1.55 GB My Microsoft.NET folder is 654 MB – I don't know what if any programs I have that are using it. My Service Pack folder is 568 MB. The Software Distribution folder is 536 MB The ie8updates folder is 380 MB. How can I reduce the size of these folders and could their size be why I am running do slow?

  • How to find out what is causing a slow down of the application on this server?

    This is not the typical serverfault question, but I'm out of ideas and don't know where else to go. If there are better places to ask this, just point me there in the comments. Thanks. Situation We have this web application that uses Zend Framework, so runs in PHP on an Apache web server. We use MySQL for data storage and memcached for object caching. The application has a very unique usage and load pattern. It is a mobile web application where every full hour a cronjob looks through the database for users that have some information waiting or action to do and sends this information to a (external) notification server, that pushes these notifications to them. After the users get these notifications, the go to the app and use it, mostly for a very short time. An hour later, same thing happens. Problem In the last few weeks usage of the application really started to grow. In the last few days we encountered very high load and doubling of application response times during and after the sending of these notifications (so basically every hour). The server doesn't crash or stop responding to requests, it just gets slower and slower and often takes 20 minutes to recover - until the same thing starts again at the full hour. We have extensive monitoring in place (New Relic, collectd) but I can't figure out what's wrong; I can't find the bottlekneck. That's where you come in: Can you help me figure out what's wrong and maybe how to fix it? Additional information The server is a 16 core Intel Xeon (8 cores with hyperthreading, I think) and 12GB RAM running Ubuntu 10.04 (Linux 3.2.4-20120307 x86_64). Apache is 2.2.x and PHP is Version 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.11. If any configuration information would help analyze the problem, just comment and I will add it.   • How do I slow down a video generating new interpolated frames?

    I've used mencoder's speed parameter to generate a video which is played at half the speed. This basically means halving the framerate of the video. But I'm interested in software that could convert a 30fps video to another 30fps video with half the frames interpolated, maybe using the motion information stored in the video stream per se. I think this is called intra-frame interpolation, but I haven't found anything practical other than research papers. Any pointers to such software?

  • Is there any software or hardware which lets you stop, slow down, speed up or even reverse time?

    Obviously I'm talking about time in terms of the PC clock rather than real time. We were testing an application we've developed at work by setting the clock forward and back to simulate different scenarios and I started thinking how useful it would be if you could adjust the rate(?) of the system clock with finer control. So you could make a minute pass in a second or a day pass in 30 seconds and watch how the program you're developing copes with changes in date and time. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows of any software or hardware which can let you do some or all of the above.

  • Windows shutting down, CPU maxing out in Windows-7 32-bit? [closed]

    I have no idea, what is happening to my laptop. For last 5-6 times it has automatically shutdown while running, without doing anything serious. And I even do get the message during boot which says - Start windows normal - Start in safe mode It just boots up normal. Few days ago, my screen blinked and it the PC shutdown immediately. After that I was not able to get it started. I got it repaired, the guy said he has replaced the display chip (nVidia-nvs-140), but i seriously doubt that. Now it started working, but would shutdown every 20 mins or so. I have a dual boot, ubuntu-11.10 works just fine. Virus scan on windows shows nothing. I am pasting my perfmon output. My CPU for reason is maxing out to 100% continously, for windows internal processes. Please have a look at the attached file. Strangly now for last 2 hours it is working fine, but i am just writing emails and reading excels. ThinkPad T61 | t9300 | 3gb | nVidia 140 nvs-quadro (latest driver 296.10) What do you suggest?

  • How can I shut down all my Virtual Machines when my UPS kicks in?

    I have a Dell T610 running ESXi4, an APC Smart UPS 1000VA and a local "console" machine running Vista and the vSphere 4 Essentials pack. A dedicated management network is in place between the T610 and the Vista machine. We have 4 VMs: SBS 2003, Server 2003 running Terminal Services, and two XP Machines. Ideally, when the UPS is forced to use battery power [for a set number minutes], I would like to gracefully shutdown all the VMs, then the ESXi, then the console machine. The latter two are not strictly a priority, but the VMs within ESXi are. Google provided lots of deprecated scripts that used to work on ESXi 3.x or similar, however I am unable to find what they were deprecated by. What do I need to be able to do this? I have Powerchute Express as supplied with the UPS, but would be willing to pay for software if required.

    Starting around the time I installed the Office 2010 Beta, Whenever I login, Windows tries to open a file named "Bob", coincidentally the first part of my username. Selecting Notepad to open it, and it contains TCP/IP network settings. I've looked for and deleted unrecognized entries in my StartUp folder, in HKLM/.../CurrentVersion/Run and in HKCU/.../CurrentVersion/Run with no luck. Is there any other place I should be looking for errant entries?

  • Why do servers go down after a lot of traffic?

    I'm working on an iOS app that makes extensive use of databases, where users will be able to sync their data to a server. However, I'm terrified of the event that if too many users start using the app, the servers will no longer be able to handle it. I'm not a server guy at all and am not too familiar with how that works, but my question is, why do servers get overloaded and how can that be prevented? Does it have to do with who my server host is? Or is it about the efficiency of my code? If my host is a reliable server, such as Amazon AWS, am I still at risk for server problems? Bottom line is, does it have to do with the way I implement my code, or does it have to do with who my host is?

  • How do you close a VMWare Fusion VM Window without shutting it down or suspending it?

    There are a few parts to this question. The first is: I'm running a virtual machine guest using vmrun and nogui, when I open the VMWare Fusion application, the window library opens but subsequently also opens any window of a running VM. Is there a way to prevent this? Secondly, but related: Once it does pop up or I have that separate VM Window open, is there a way to close the window such that it does not suspend or shutdown the vm i.e. convert it back to nogui mode?

    We manage a server that is hosted on Amazon EC2, which has web applications that need to be able to send outgoing email. Recently we received a notice from Amazon about possible email abuse on that server, so i've been looking into it. It's Windows Server Datacenter (2003, i guess), and uses SMTP Virtual Server (you know, the one that requires IIS 6 for admin).   • Windows 7 boot animation slows down startup by default?

    I just upgraded my HDD to an SSD drive. I am running a completely fresh install and enjoy the short boot time. I tweaked the startup to be as fast as I could by removing unneeded apps and such. Nor am I running a solid desktop background (which causes a 30-sec startup delay). I have a 2.1ghz 64 bit laptop with 4 gigs of ram, so it's not a liquid-cooled speed monster, but I checked some super high end PC boot vids on YouTube and noticed that they startup in almost the same time as my machine. I also noticed that the glowing Windows 7 animation plays all the way no matter how fast the PC is. I turned off the animation, and the startup time is unchanged. I turned on verbose startup info and noticed that it runs until the very end, where it looks like it just sits there for no reason waiting for something to happen for a few seconds. So now I think that the Windows 7 startup animation has a timer built into it that forces the computer to wait for no other reason than to play the full animation. Super-fast XP boot vids on YouTube seem to start much faster (and not just because they "have less to load"). Am I imagining things? My question is: How can I turn off not just the animation, but the timer for the animation. Here is a vid that tipped me off, I have no relation to the poster.     My first post here, I am reading / learning a lot, thanks ;). I've got a mysterious issue (for me) and would really appreciate to get it solved. I've rent a reseller package with bibihost.com and it's now the second time that all my domaines the hoster's site are unavailable from my connection (my Mac and my iPhone), (in browser, per FTP, ping, ab, and traceroute) This has never before happened to me with other web addresses. traceroute get's always stuck at a specific server 40g.vss-1-6k.routers.chtix.eu (91.121.131.29) The sites are all up for everyone else, I've checked with downforeveryoneorjustme.com, a homegrown script loaded to another server and montastic.com My question(s) : Why am I blocked ? Is there anything I can do about it ? If I cannot solve this issue I have to change the hoster, but I really would like to know what's going on. my domaines on this server : tienstiens.fr tomlegrand.com

My pc (hostname: test) gets a 192.168.1.7 from dhcp. Its dns server is my router (192.168.1.1). How can the router relate my ip change (as soon as the lease is over) to my hostname?

  • AWS instance went down for restart, came back up and has been "Waiting for network configuration... " for 12 hours

    What happened was about a month ago, I created a new instance, re-configured everything, and mounted the old instances drive to the new one. I then detached the old drive from the instance, but it was still mounted, so it errored out. Now, come the outage last month, and when the instance boots back up - the drive isn't there, because in the downtime, it dismounted. It hangs because the fstab is looking for it. I get word that the server's not up today, I check the logs, re-attach the drive and restart. Now I'm getting "Waiting for network configuration..." and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Some googling told me that I'm going to need to start from zero again, which I don't think is right. I created a new instance, which booted no problem, then I stopped it and swapped the two old drives into the new instance. Still the same error. Using the fresh AMI, it worked. I figure it's just a misconfigured Amazon file. I can attach the drive to a functioning instance on the same AMI and copy some files over, then try again - but I don't know where to even start or what files to check.
