• How can I vertically center an element with GWT?

  Perhaps I haven't been searching the right way but I cannot figure out for the life of me how to center an element using GWT Layout Panels. I'm using UiBinder and I've tried all panels that implement HasVerticalAlignment (DockPanel, HorizontalPanel, VerticalPanel). None of them seem to have any impact from setting vertical alignment (or even horizontal). I've made sure they're taking 100% width and height, inspected the resulting DOM layout from my browser and nothing seems to be changed from those properties. The quick and dirty fix I've figured out is to create my own "CenterPanel" widget which basically is a wrapper around a HTMLPanel with a HTML table with a valign="middle" cell. However, this basically feels like a throwback to the classical css-layout middle centering problems. Surely GWT has something to do this that I've completely overlooked?

• How to scroll hex tiles?

  I don't seem to be able to find an answer to this one. I have a map of hex tiles. I wish to implement scrolling. It doesn't yet work the way it should do. If you look at my example on jsfiddle.net below you will see that when moving to the right, when you get to the next hex tile along, there is a problem with the X position and calculations that have taken place. It seems it is a simple bit of maths that is missing. • Character Jump Control

  I would like to know how can I control the jump movement of a character in Unity3D. Basically I am trying to program the jump in such a way that while a jump is in progress the character is allowed to move either left or right in mid-air when the corresponding keys are pressed. With my script the character will correctly move to the left when, for example, the left key is pressed, but when the right key is pressed afterwards, the character moves to the right before the movement to the left is completed. There are "compound Boolean" values used throughout .NET, and I want to design some of my own. I've been using a series of Boolean variables, which works, but just isn't the same. • Flex 4 how to layout spark controls in an html table type way

  I have a group of controls and I want to organize them in a table like fashion. I want 1 row and 6 columns. Col 1,3,4,5,6 should all auto size to the contents and col 2 should take up the remaining available space. When the size of the group changes, only col2 width should change. I also want to be able to set the alignment of each cell. How can I do this in flex 4? I found a reference to mx:constraintColumns but this seems to be used with the canvas and in flex 4 adobe suggests not using canvases. Is there something similar in flex 4? I'm looking for something along the lines of Grid/Grid.ColumnDefinitions in silverlight.

• Are indivisible operations still indivisible on multiprocessor and multicore systems?

  As per the title, plus what are the limitations and gotchas. For example, on x86 processors, alignment for most data types is optional - an optimisation rather than a requirement. That means that a pointer may be stored at an unaligned address, which in turn means that pointer might be split over a cache page boundary. Obviously this could be done if you work hard enough on any processor (picking out particular bytes etc), but not in a way where you'd still expect the write operation to be indivisible. I seriously doubt that a multicore processor can ensure that other cores can guarantee a consistent all-before or all-after view of a written pointer in this unaligned-write-crossing-a-page-boundary situation. Am I right? And are there any similar gotchas I haven't thought of?

It requires .NET 4.0 and uses some cool technologies, like caching (the new System.Runtime.Caching) and the Task Parallel Library (System.Threading.Tasks). • fieldset form with Table-like layout with CSS?

  I have an application in which I'm currently using a two column table in order to get accurate cell alignment of the left column labels/descriptions with the right column form fields. I'd like to convert it to css and use jQuery to expand/collapse specific sections. I've seen some jQuery libraries, the menu.js in particular. And they appear to all use list items for the markup. I'm OK with converting my table to UL/LI structure if that's what I need to do. Just looking for some advice.

• About enumerations in Delphi and c++ in 64-bit environments

  I recently had to work around the different default sizes used for enumerations in Delphi and c++ since i have to use a c++ dll from a delphi application. On function call returns an array of structs (or records in delphi), the first element of which is an enum. To make this work, I use packed records (or aligned(1)-structs). However, since delphi selects the size of an enum-variable dynamically by default and uses the smallest datatype possible (it was a byte in my case), but C++ uses an int for enums, my data was not interpreted correctly. Delphi offers a compiler switch to work around this, so the declaration of the enum becomes {$Z4} TTypeofLight = ( V3d_AMBIENT, V3d_DIRECTIONAL, V3d_POSITIONAL, V3d_SPOT ); {$Z1} My Questions are: What will become of my structs when they are compiled on/for a 64-bit environment? Does the default c++ integer grow to 8 Bytes? Are there other memory alignment / data type size modifications (other than pointers)?

• EASY: How does one release memory correctly in the attached C array?

• Android views' borders issue on some devices

  Hi there, Some users have been reporting border alignment issues on some android components such as the alert popup or the editTexts. This is happening on the Samsung Galaxy Apollo (200x400) and the HTC Pro Touch (480x640) devices. I cannot replicate that because i don't own those devices and in the Samsung Galaxy S and emulator everything looks just right. I think that the problem is the dpi or resolution of the device (because the edittext background is a single .9.png so image should look ok); however I am not sure if the supports-screens tag is the solution. Also, application was developed using Api 3 (v1.5) and supports-screens was not yet supported, nor the screen-size resource qualifier. The style used for the alerts and editText is the phone default. Could the problem be something related with the theme applied to the phone by the user? • C++ Thread Safe Integer

  Hello everyone, I have currently created a C++ class for a thread safe integer which simply stores an integer privately and has public get a set functions which use a boost::mutex to ensure that only one change at a time can be applied to the integer. Is this the most efficient way to do it, I have been informed that mutexes are quite resource intensive? The class is used a lot, very rapidly so it could well be a bottleneck... Googleing C++ Thread Safe Integer returns unclear views and oppinions on the thread safety of integer operations on different architectures. Some say that a 32bit int on a 32bit arch is safe, but 64 on 32 isn't due to 'alignment' Others say it is compiler/OS specific (which I don't doubt). I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on 32 bit machines, some have dual cores and so threads may be executed simultaneously on different cores in some cases and I am using GCC 4.4's g++ compiler. • Checkbox in a Crystal Report

  What is the best way to display a checkbox in a Crystal Report? Example: My report has a box for "Male" and "Female", and one should be checked. My current workaround is to draw a small graphical square, and line it up with a formula which goes like this: if {table.gender} = "M" then "X" else " " This is a poor solution, because changing the font misaligns my "X" and the box around it, and it is absurdly tedious to squint at the screen and get a pixel-perfect alignment for every box (there are dozens). Does anyone have a better solution? I've thought about using the old-style terminal characters, but I'm not sure if they display properly in Crystal. Edit: I'm using Crystal XI.

Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

• Google App Engine - Document Editor Creation/Tap Into Google Docs?

  What is the best way to create a custom document editor in GAE? I'm making a website meant for a School Robotics Club (With support for any other organization - DRY). We currently use Google services for online collaboration, I'm wondering if there is a way to tap into Google Docs and allow users to edit a Google Document without using Google Accounts or the Google Doc interface. If that is not possible (I've researched and I don't think it is), what is the best way to make a document editor? I want it completely on the website I'm creating, so I'm assuming just some javascript editor like TinyMCE + Ajax + Datastore. Is their anything that replicates Google Doc's/Microsoft Offices's/OpenOffice.org's feature set as far as fonts, spacing, alignment, justification, etc.?

• Circular dock/menu in css or jquery

  Is it possible to have a circular menu or dock using css or jquery.? I have a set of images as the dock items that need to be displayed as a circular dock... however the number of items in the dock are not constant and may vary.... so i cannot tend to use constant values for positioning each item in a pre-defined manner. Ajax loads some images into this particular div and i need to use css or jquery to style this so that they get displayed as circular dock items. Any idea on how this can be implemented..? I would like a browser in-specific implementation, but i also welcome if some one has some solutions specific to few browsers... UPDATE I don't think i exactly want a pie menu... it easily gets messed up as the number of dock items increase. I am looking for a spiral dock. and by spiral i mean that the menu items must be in the following alignment..

• Unity, changing gravity game & stopping character when he hit a wall.

  i am currently working on a 2d puzzle game in the unity engine. One of the aspect of this game is the possibility to rotate the level of 90°. It also rotate the gravity. The main character is not directly controlled by the player, but instead fall when the level is rotated. When the main character hit a wall, he should stop to move. If i do not stop it, it kind of blink ans shake against the wall. To stop it i detect collision and depending on the current rotation state, the player will stop at "vertical" or "horizontal" tags when a OnCollisonEnter occurs. I must do that because when the player fall on his relative ground, He must not stop like if he had touch a wall. My problem is the 'side' of platform, or the 'top' of wall, they use the same tag and thus do not give the correct tag to my character. I tried to put a very small invisible box on top/side of elements but the collision occurs nevertheless. It seems when the player falls and hit something he go through a bit before being replaced at correct position by unity. Is there a way : 1 ) to doesn't stop my character but to make it appear immobile on screen 2 ) To detect a "i cannot move anymore" collision other than by using collision?

• Migrating My GWB Blog Over To WordPress

  Geeks With Blogs has been good to me, but there are too many tempting things about Word Press for me to stay with GWB.  Particularly their statistics features, and also I like that I can apply specific tags to my posts to make them easier to find in Google (and I never was able to get categories working on GWB). The one thing I don’t like about WordPress is I can’t seem to find a theme that stretches the Content area to take up the rest of the space on wide resolutions…..hopefully I’ll be able to overcome that obstacle soon though. For those who are curious as to how I actually moved all of my posts across, I ended up just using Live Writer to open my GWB posts, and then just changed it to publish to my WordPress blog.  This was fairly painless, but with my 27 posts it took probably about 2 hours of manual effort to do.  Most of the time WordPress was automatically able to copy the images over, but sometimes I had to save the pics from my GWB posts and then re-add them in Live Writer to my WordPress post.  I found another developers automated solution (in alpha mode), but opted to do it manually since I wanted to manually specify Categories and Tags on each post anyways.  The one thing I still have left to do is move the worthwhile comments across from the GWB posts to the new WordPress posts. The largest pain point was that with GWB I was using the Code Snippet Plugin for Live Writer for my source code snippets, and when they got transferred over to WordPress they looked horrible.  So I ended up finding a new Live Writer plugin called SyntaxHighlighter that looks even nicer on my posts If anybody knows of a nice WordPress theme that stretches the content area to fit the width of the screen, please let me know.  All of the themes I’ve found seem to have a max width set on them, so I end up with much wasted space on the left and right sides.  Since I post lots of code snippets, the more horizontal space the better! • Move unity launcher to bottom of the screen

  I have Ubuntu 13.04 DESKTOP version and for some odd reason I'm told that the Unity launcher cannot be moved to the bottom of the screen because of several reasons: 1. Canonical wants it there so it fits with their overall design goals, namely when it comes to touchscreen devices and netbooks. This in my mind totally ignores the fact that most Ubuntu users are DESKTOP users. No matter what Canonicals long term goal is, it surely mustn't be at the expense of needs of their core user base. 2. Most monitors are widescreen, the launcher is more compact where it is. This is not only taking away the users choice, but is also a wrong assessment. Widescreen monitors can sometimes be rotated on a pivot, giving it a portrait aspect. By displaying the Unity launcher on the left side it takes up a lot of space. Many desktop users have multiple monitors, and having the launcher on the left side of each monitor is very awkward. Also, many websites are catered to fit on a half 1920 display, so you can have two browser windows open side-by-side with all content visible. The placement of the Unity launcher takes away the horizontal space meaning there's less room for each browser window, and you'll see the right side of the web pages being occluded. Any suggestion to simply hide the Unity launcher, or "Canonical knows best" or "get used to it" are unwelcome and totally ignores the above points. Linux is about choice. Canonical's stubbornness with the Unity launcher placement is inconsistent with what Linux is about.

You've equated it with just throwing some VM's in some vendor's datacenter - which is certainly part of it, but not the whole story.
