  Here are few of the sample questions I get every day? “Give me shortcut to become superstar?” “How do I become like you?” “Which book I should read so I know everything?” “Can you share your secret to be successful? I want to know it but do not share with others.” There is generic answer I always give is to work hard and read good educational material or watch good online videos. One of the emails really caught my attention. It was from a friend and SQL Server Expert John Sansom (Blog | Twitter). He wrote if I would like to share my story with the world about “Who I am and How I got Here”. I was very much intrigued with his suggestion. John is one guy I respect a lot. Every single topic he writes, I read it with dedication. I eagerly wait for his Weekly Summary of Best SQL Links. If you have not read them, you are missing something out. Writing a guest post for him was like walking in memory lane. I remembered the time when I was beginning my career and I was bit overconfident and bit naive. I had my share of mistakes when I started my career. As time passed by I realize the truth. Well, we all do mistakes. Though, I am proud that as soon as I know my mistakes I corrected them. I never acted on impulse or when I am angry. I think that alone has helped me analysis the situation better and become better human being. During the course, I have lost my ego and it is replaced by passion. I am much more happy and successful in my work. Quite often people ask me if I am always online and wether I have family or not. Honestly, I am able to work hard because of my family. They support me and they encourage me to be enjoy in what I do. They support everything I do and personally, I do not miss a single occasion to join them in daily chores of fun. If there was a shortcut to success – I want know. I learnt SQL Server hard way and I am still learning. There are so many things, I have to learn. There is not enough time to learn everything which we want to learn. • WebLogic Server–Use the Execution Context ID in Applications–Lessons From Hansel and Gretel

  I learned a neat trick this week.  Don’t let your breadcrumbs go to waste like Hansel and Gretel did!  Keep track of the code path, logs and errors for each request as they flow through the system.  Earlier this week an OTN forum post in the WLS – General category by Oracle Ace John Stegeman asked a question how to retrieve the Execution Context ID so that it could be used on an error page that a user could provide to a help desk or use to check with application administrators so they could look up what went wrong.  What is the Execution Context ID (ECID)?  Fusion Middleware injects an ECID as a request enters the system and it says with the request as it flows from Oracle HTTP Server to Oracle Web Cache to multiple WebLogic Servers to the Oracle Database. It’s a way to uniquely identify a request across tiers.  According to the documentation it’s: The value of the ECID is a unique identifier that can be used to correlate individual events as being part of the same request execution flow. For example, events that are identified as being related to a particular request typically have the same ECID value.  The format of the ECID string itself is determined by an internal mechanism that is subject to change; therefore, you should not have or place any dependencies on that format. The novel idea that I see John had was to extend this concept beyond the diagnostic information that is captured by Fusion Middleware.  Why not also use this identifier in your logs and errors so you can correlate even more information together!  Your logging might already identify the user, so why not identify the request so you filter down even more.  All you need to do inside of WebLogic Server to get ahold of this information is invoke DiagnosticConextHelper: weblogic.diagnostics.context.DiagnosticContextHelper.getContextId() This class has other helpful methods to see other values tracked by the diagnostics framework too.  This way I can see even more detail and get information across tiers. In performance profiling, this can be very handy to track down where time is being spent in code.  I’ve blogged and made videos about this before.  JRockit Flight Recorder can use the WLDF Diagnostic Volume in WLS 10.3.3+ to automatically capture and correlate lots of helpful information for each request without installing any special agents and with the out-of-the-box JRockit and WLS settings!  You can see here how information is displayed in JRockit Flight Recorder about a single request as it calls a Servlet, which calls an EJB, which gets a DB connection, which starts a transaction, etc.  You can get timings around everything and even see the SQL that is used. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E21764_01/web.1111/e13714/using_flightrecorder.htm#WLDFC480 Recent versions of the WLS console also are able to visualize this data too, so it works with other JVMs besides JRockit when you turn on WLDF instrumentation. I wrote a little sample application that verified to myself that the ECID did actually cross JVM boundaries.  I invoked a Servlet in one JVM, which acted as an EJB client to Stateless Session Bean running in another JVM.  Each call returned the same ECID.  You need to turn on WLDF Instrumentation for this to work otherwise the framework returns null.  I’m glad John put me on to this API as I have some interesting ideas on how to correlate some information together.

• Postback problem when using URL Rewrite and 404.aspx

  I'm using URL rewrite on my site to get URLs like: http://mysite.com/users/john instead of http://mysite.com/index.aspx?user=john To achive this extensionless rewrite with IIS6 and no access to the hosting-server I use the "404-approach". When a request that the server can't find, the mapped 404-page is executed, since this is a aspx-page the rewrite can be performed (I can setup the 404-mapping using the controlpanel on the hosting-service). • ASP.NET Ajax - Asynch request has separate session???

  We are writing a search application that saves the search criteria to session state and executes the search inside of an asp.net updatepanel. Sometimes when we execute multiple searches successively the 2nd or 3rd search will sometimes return results from the first set of search criteria. Example: our first search we do a look up on "John Smith" - John Smith results are displayed. The second search we do a look up on "Bob Jones" - John Smith results are displayed. We save all of the search criteria in session state as I said, and read it from session state inside of the ajax request to format the DB query. When we put break points in VS everything behaves as normal, but without them we get the original search criteria and results. My guess is because they are saved in session, that the ajax request somehow gets its own session and saves the criteria to that, and then retrieves the criteria from that session every time, but the non-async stuff is able to see when the criteria is modified and saves the changes to state accordingly, but because they are from two different sessions there is a disparity in what is saved and read. EDIT::: To elaborate more, there was a suggestion of appending the search criteria to the query string which normally is good practice and I agree thats how it should be but following our requirements I don't see it as being viable. They want it so the user fills out the input controls hits search and there is no page reload, the only thing they see is a progress indicator on the page, and they still have the ability to navigate and use other features on the current page. If I were to add criteria to the query string I would have to do another request causing the whole page to load, which depending on the search criteria can take a really long time. This is why we are using an ajax call to perform the search and why we aren't causing another full page request..... I hope this clarifies the situation.

E.g something like this: $string = " <paragraph>apples are red...</paragraph> <paragraph>john is a boy..</paragraph> <paragraph>this is dummy text......</paragraph> "; $paragraphs = splitParagraphs($string); /* $paragraphs now contains: $paragraphs[0] = apples are red... $paragraphs[1] = john is a boy... $paragraphs[1] = this is dummy text... */ Any ideas? P.S it should be case insensitive, <paragraph>, <PARAGRAPH>, <Paragraph> should all be treated the same way.

• jQuery UI Question. How to pass parameters to a function.

  I am pretty new to jQuery. How do I pass parameters to a function? I found some jQueryUI demos and I got it working except "view" link. I have a problem with passing parameters to and show them in modal popup windows. I have "Create New User" button and "View" link on the page. Clicking "Create New User" does pass the parameters and show them on modal popup window. ('12345' in User ID textbox, 'John Starks' in User Name textbox) $(function() { ... //Create New User button $('#create-user') .button() .click( function() { $('#dialog-form').dialog('open'); userId.val('12345'); userName.val('John Starks'); } ); }); But, "View" link doesn't work... • First Letter Section Headers with Core Data

  I'm trying to create a list of people sorted in a tableView of sections with the first letter as the title for each section - a la Address Book. I've got it all working, though there is a bit of an issue with the sort order. Here is the way I'm doing it now: NSFetchRequest *request = [[NSFetchRequest alloc] init]; [request setEntity:[NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"Contact" inManagedObjectContext:context]]; NSSortDescriptor *fullName = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"fullName" ascending:YES]; NSArray *sortDescriptors = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:fullName, nil]; [request setSortDescriptors:sortDescriptors]; [fullName release]; [sortDescriptors release]; NSError *error = nil; [resultController release]; resultController = [[NSFetchedResultsController alloc] initWithFetchRequest:request managedObjectContext:context sectionNameKeyPath:@"firstLetter" cacheName:nil]; [resultController performFetch:&error]; [request release]; fullName is a standard property, and firstLetter is a transient property which returns - as you'd expect - the first letter of the fullName. 95% of the time, this works perfectly. The problem is the result controller expects these two "lists" (the sorted fullName list and the sorted firstLetter list) to match exactly. If I have 2 contacts like John and Jack, my fullName list would sort these as Jack, John every time but my firstLetter list might sort them as John, Jack sometimes as it's only sorting by the first letter and leaving the rest to chance. When these lists don't match up, I get a blank tableView with 0 items in it. I'm not really sure how I should go about fixing this issue, but it's very frustrating. Has anyone else run into this? What did you guys find out?

  Hey there. I'm trying to create a Regex javascript split, but I'm totally stuck. Here's my input: 9:30 pm The user did action A. 10:30 pm Welcome, user John Doe. ***This is a comment 11:30 am This is some more input. I want the output array after the split() to be (I've removed the \n for readability): ["9:30 pm The user did action A.", "10:30 pm Welcome, user John Doe.", "***This is a comment", "11:30 am This is some more input." ]; My current regular expression is: var split = text.split(/\s*(?=(\b\d+:\d+|\*\*\*))/); This works, but there is one problem: the timestamps get repeated in extra elements. So I get: ["9:30", "9:30 pm The user did action A.", "10:30", "10:30 pm Welcome, user John Doe.", "***This is a comment", "11:30", "11:30 am This is some more input." ]; I cant split on the newlines \n because they aren't consistent, and sometimes there may be no newlines at all. Could you help me out with a Regex for this? Thanks so much!!

• UPDATE query that fixes orphaned records

  I have an Access database that has two tables that are related by PK/FK. Unfortunately, the database tables have allowed for duplicate/redundant records and has made the database a bit screwy. I am trying to figure out a SQL statement that will fix the problem. To better explain the problem and goal, I have created example tables to use as reference: You'll notice there are two tables, a Student table and a TestScore table where StudentID is the PK/FK. The Student table contains duplicate records for students John, Sally, Tommy, and Suzy. In other words the John's with StudentID's 1 and 5 are the same person, Sally 2 and 6 are the same person, and so on. The TestScore table relates test scores with a student. Ignoring how/why the Student table allowed duplicates, etc - The goal I'm trying to accomplish is to update the TestScore table so that it replaces the StudentID's that have been disabled with the corresponding enabled StudentID. So, all StudentID's = 1 (John) will be updated to 5; all StudentID's = 2 (Sally) will be updated to 6, and so on. Here's the resultant TestScore table that I'm shooting for (Notice there is no longer any reference to the disabled StudentID's 1-4): Can you think of a query (compatible with MS Access's JET Engine) that can accomplish this goal? Or, maybe, you can offer some tips/perspectives that will point me in the right direction. Thanks.

  Hi: Since uni, I've programming in Java for 3 years, although I am not fully dedicated to this language, I have spent quite some time in it, nevertheless. I understand both ways, just curious which style do you prefer. public class Test{ public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(getAgent().getAgentName()); } private static Agent getAgent() { return new Agent(); }} class Agent{ private String getAgentName() { return "John Smith"; }} I am pretty happy with nested method calls such like the following public class Test{ public static void main(String[] args) { getAgentName(getAgent()); } private static void getAgentName(Agent agent) { System.out.println(agent.getName()); } private static Agent getAgent() { return new Agent(); }} class Agent { public String getName(){ return "John Smith"; }} They have identical output I saw "John Smith" twice. I wonder, if one way of doing this has better performance or other advantages over the other. Personally I prefer the latter, since for nested methods I can certainly tell which starts first, and which is after. The above code is but a sample, The code that I am working with now is much more complicated, a bit like a maze... So switching between the two styles often blows my head in no time.

• C++ Map Question

  Hi. I'm working on my C++ assignment about soccer and I encountered a problem with map. My problem that I encountered is that when I stored 2 or more "midfielders" as the key, even the cout data shows different, but when I do a multiplication on the 2nd -second value, it "adds up" the first -second value and multiply with it. E.g. John midfielder 1 Steven midfielder 3 I have a program that already reads in the playerPosition. So the map goes like this: John 1 (Key, Value) Steven 3 (Key, Value) if(playerName == a-first && playerPosition == "midfielder") { cout << a-second*2000 << endl; //number of goals * $2000 } So by right, the program should output: 2000 6000 But instead, I'm getting 2000 8000 So, I'm assuming it adds the 1 to 3 (resulting in 4) and multiplying with 2000, which is totally wrong... I tried cout a-first and a-second in the program and I get: John 1 Steven 3 But after the multiplication, it's totally different. Any ideas? Thanks.

  Im having some trouble with joining two tables. This is what my two tables look like: Table 1 Customer_ID CustomerName Add. 1000 John Smith 1001 Mike Coles 1002 Sam Carter Table 2 Sensor_ID Location Temp CustIDFK 1000 NY 70 1002 NY 70 1000 ... ... 1001 1001 1002 Desired: Sensor_ID Location Temp CustIDFK 1000 NY 70 John Smith 1002 NY 70 Sam Carter 1000 ... ... John Smith 1001 Mike Coles 1001 1002 I have made Customer_ID from table 1 my primary key, created custIDFK in table 2 and set that as my foreign key. I am really new to sql server so I am still having trouble with the whole relationship piece of it. My goal is to match one customer_ID with one Sensor_ID. The problem is that the table 2 does not have "unique IDs" since they repeat so I cant set that to my foreign key. I know I will have to do either an inner join or outer join, I just dont know how to link the sensor id with customer one. I was thinking of giving my sensor_ID a unique ID but the data that is being inserted into table 2 is coming from another program. Any suggestions?

• MySQL Query That Can Pull the Data I am Seeking?

  On the project I am working on, I am stuck with the table structure from Hades. Two things to keep in mind: I can't change the table structure right now. I'm stuck with it for the time being. The queries are dynamically generated and not hard coded. So, while I am asking for a query that can pull this data, what I am really working toward is an algorithm that will generate the query I need. Hopefully, I can explain the problem without making your eyes glaze over and your brain implode. We have an instance table that looks (simplified) along these lines: Instances InstanceID active 1 Y 2 Y 3 Y 4 N 5 Y 6 Y Then, there are multiple data tables along these lines: Table1 InstanceID field1 reference_field2 1 John 5 2 Sally NULL 3 Fred 6 4 Joe NULL Table2 InstanceID field3 5 1 6 1 Table3 InstanceID fieldID field4 5 1 Howard 5 2 James 6 2 Betty Please note that reference_field2 in Table1 contains a reference to another instance. Field3 in Table2 is a bit more complicated. It contains a fieldID for Table 3. What I need is a query that will get me a list as follows: InstanceID field1 field4 1 John Howard 2 Sally 3 Fred The problem is, in the query I currently have, I do not get Fred because there is no entry in Table3 for fieldID 1 and InstanceID 6. So, the very best list I have been able to get thus far is InstanceID field1 field4 1 John Howard 2 Sally In essence, if there is an entry in Table1 for Field 2, and there is not an entry in Table 3 that has the instanceID contained in field2 and the field ID contained in field3, I don't get the data from field1. I have looked at joins till I'm blue in the face, and I can't see a way to handle the case when table3 has no entry.

• Ember model is gone when I use the renderTemplate hook

  I have a single template - editPerson.hbs <form role="form"> FirstName: {{input type="text" value=model.firstName }} <br/> LastName: {{input type="text" value=model.lastName }} </form> I want to render this template when the user wants to edit an existing person or create a new person. So, I set up routes: App.Router.map(function(){ this.route("createPerson", { path: "/person/new" }); this.route("editPerson", { path: "/person/:id}); // other routes not show for brevity }); So, I define two routes - one for create and one for edit: App.CreatePersonRoute = Ember.Route.extend({ renderTemplate: function(){ this.render("editPerson", { controller: "editPerson" }); }, model: function(){ return {firstName: "John", lastName: "Smith" }; } }); App.EditPersonRoute = Ember.Route.extend({ model: function(id){ return {firstName: "John Existing", lastName: "Smith Existing" }; } }); So, I hard-code the models. I'm concerned about the createPerson route. I'm telling it to render the editPersonTemplate and to use the editPerson controller (which I don't show because I don't think it matters - but I made one, though.) When I use renderTemplate, I lose the model John Smith, which in turn, won't display on the editTemplate on the web page. Why? I "fixed" this by creating a separate and identical (to editPerson.hbs) createPerson.hbs, and removing the renderTemplate hook in the CreatePerson. It works as expected, but I find it somewhat troubling to have a separate and identical template for the edit and create cases. I looked everywhere for how to properly do this, and I found no answers.

• Why does the following Toggle function perform four different operations instead of two?

  You can see the implementation here: http://jsfiddle.net/BMWZd/8/ What I am trying to do, when you click on 'John Brown', you see the first element at top turn black. When you click it again, the border of the dotted circle disappears, then when you click 'John Brown' again, you see something else, then finally once again it all disappears. What I am trying to achieve is when you click it once, everything turns black (like it does now), then you click it again, everything disappears and goes back to the original state. Important distinction, what I mean is...when one of the names in the box are not clicked. So if you clicked John Brown then moved to Jack Dorsey, the #1 at top should stay black. But if you were to click Jack Dorsey again, i.e. you 'unclicked' it, then it should disappear. Also, how do I tighten it up, so that it responds quicker. Now when you click it, it feels like there is a little bit of a lag between when it was clicked and when it responds.   Hi, i have a question about unit testing. say i have a controller with one create method which puts a new customer in the database: //code a bit shortened public actionresult Create(Formcollection formcollection){ client c = nwe client(); c.Name = formcollection["name"]; ClientService.Save(c); { Clientservice would call a datalayer object and save it in the database. What i do now is create a database testscript and set my database in a know condition before testing. So when i test this method in the unit test, i know that there must be one more client in the database, and what it's name is. In short: ClientController cc = new ClientController(); cc.Create(new FormCollection (){name="John"}); //i know i had 10 clients before assert.areEqual(11, ClientService.GetNumberOfClients()); //the last inserted one is John assert.areEqual("John", ClientService.GetAllClients()[10].Name); So i've read that unit testing should not be hitting the database, i've setup an IOC for the database classes, but then what? I can create a fake database class, and make it do nothing. But then ofcourse my assertions will not work because if i say GetNumberOfClients() it will alwasy return X because it has no interaction with the fake database class used in the Create Method. I can also create a List of Clients in the fake database class, but as there will be two different instance created (one in the controller action and one in the unit test), they will have no interaction. What is the way to make this unit test work without a database?

• Objective C Enumerate Sentences in a paragraph

  I would like to write an enumerator that would go through a paragraph of text and gives me one sentence at a time. I tried using stringEnumerate with the NSStringEnumerationBySentences but that simply looks at the periods and fails. For example, lets say I have the following text Block: "Senator John A. Boehner decided not to move forward. He also decided not to call the congress. The news reporter said though...." I would like my function to break down the above paragraph in the following sentences: Senator John A. Boehner decided not to move forward He also decided not to call the congress (No third sentence because it's a half a sentence) The String Enumerator with the sentence optionjust looks at the periods and breaks down that way which is wrong: Senator John A. Boehner decided not to move forward He also decided not to call the congress The news reporter said though.... Is there any library or function that I can call that does a better job at this?   I serially collect information from forms into arrays like so: list = {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"}; identifier = "first_round"; list = {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"}; identifier = "second_round"; I want to combine them into something (I may have braces where I need brackets) like: list_all = { "first_round" : {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"} , "second_round" : {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"} }; so I can access them like: alert(list_all.first_round.name) -> John (Note: the name-values ("name", "email", "color") in the two list-arrays are not quite the same, the number of items in each list-array is limited but not known in advance; I need to serially add only one array to the previous structure each round and there may be any number of rounds, i.e. "third-round" : {...}, "fourth-round" : {...} and so on.) Ultimately, I'd like it to be well-parsed for JSON. I use the jquery library, if that helps.
