• Best recruiting SaaS available for tech startups?

  I run a small startup and am always on the lookout for quality engineers. I've seen someone solicit SO with a similar question but there was only one response so I'm going to solicit the community again. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/112766/free-application-to-keep-track-of-a-recruiting-process didn't suffice for me) Over a long period of time, I've found that my system of recruiting is incredibly inefficient. An applicant who might have been attractive the first week might become overshadowed by other applicants further down the road. Sometimes, applicants who I ignored become relevant to a new position that opens up as an web app becomes more robust and takes a turn in a direction I didn't consider. These are all difficult to track. Knowing that recruiting intelligent people should be an ongoing process, what are the best web applications for managing the process? Are there any apps with features catered specifically towards tech startups? (Free or paid, doesn't matter).

• Archiving an Entire Rails Site

  I have a Ruby on Rails site that was only needed for a short period of time during which users added various objects to a mySQL database, commenting on them, associating themselves with them, etc. etc. etc. The question is this: the site is no longer needed until a week next year around this time when I will clear the database and use it again (starting from scratch). What's the best way to archive the current site so that the existing content is still viewable but no new content can be added? By best way, I mean the method by which the least system resources will be used, the server will be the safest, etc. Any suggestions?

  I have been working on many applications which run as windows service or scheduled tasks. Now, i want to make sure that these applications will be fault tolerant and reliable. For example; i have a service that runs every hour. if the service crashes while its operating or running, i d like the application to run again for the same period, to avoid data loss. moreover, i d like the program to report the error with details. My goal is to avoid data loss and not falling behind for running the program. I have built a class library that a user can import into a project. Library is supposed to keep information of running instance of the program, ie. program reads and writes information of running interval, running status etc. This data is stored in a database. I was curious, if there are some best practices to make the scheduled tasks/ windows services fault tolerant and reliable.

• How to set an array to a list of values in VB.NET?

  I cannot figure out how to set an array to one of two sets of numbers (there will be more later), every way that I have tried throws some kind of error. I have tried to Dim the array inside the case statements, but then I cannot use the array in the For Each, which makes this worthless.... any ideas would be appreciated.   I'm looking to implement a state machine to manage a user moving through a series of steps over an extended period of time (weeks) with emails and then they interact with the app. I've looked at a couple of AASM plugins and forks (it seems like this plugin space has become a bit chaotic) and am curious what people would recommend. I saw the automatic AASM by hashrocket, that transitions states using cron, and from the title it looks like it might fit the bill but there doesn't appear to be any documentation anywhere and it looks more like a skeleton app than a plugin.

For min and max values changed listening for these events this.numDownMinLimit.ValueChanged += new System.EventHandler(this.numDownMinLimit_ValueChanged); this.numDownMaxLimit.ValueChanged += new System.EventHandler(this.numDownMaxLimit_ValueChanged); step size set is 0.1 The eventhandler takes some time to complete. If you keep the mouse pressed for a period of time and then release it, the eventhandler still executes with the previous values which were fired. How do we prevent this scenario from occurring? I would like to discard the remaining events which are still in the queue, waiting to be handled, when the user releases the mouse button.

• Generic Text Only printer driver mangles control codes

  If an escape character (or most other characters < 0x20) is sent to the generic / text only printer it gets printed as a period. Using the code in the WinDDK is it possible to 'correct' this behaviour so that it passes it through unmodified? The general scenario for this is that some application ('user app') outputs a document to a windows printer. My application requires this data in plain text form and so what I do is run a generic / text only printer that talks to a virtual com port. This generally works fine except where the 'user app' outputs binary data to the print queue without using the correct mechanism (which seems to work fine on some printer drivers, such as the Epson POS ones, but not the generic / text only one). I've tried changing the print processor selection without success and also tried looking at the gtt files to see if I could readily map in these characters as though they were printable, but the minidriver tool won't let me do that. Any suggestions?

Scenario 1: Price changes in a time period EffectiveDate ExpiryDate Price 2009-01-01 2009-01-31 800$ 2009-02-01 Null 900$ So, if the price changes to 910$ on 2009-02-15, then the system should automatically update the expiry date on the previous effective price to 2009-02-14, to keep it consistent. Scenario 2: No price specified between 2009-02-01 to 2009-02-28 EffectiveDate ExpiryDate Price 2009-01-01 2009-01-31 800$ 2009-03-01 Null 900$ So, if new price is specified for 2009-02-15 onwards , then the system should automatically set the expiry date on the record to be inserted to 2009-02-28, because already a record effective from 2009-03-01 exists. • Pre-generating GUIDs for use in python?

  I have a python program that needs to generate several guids and hand them back with some other data to a client over the network. It may be hit with a lot of requests in a short time period and I would like the latency to be as low as reasonably possible. Ideally, rather than generating new guids on the fly as the client waits for a response, I would rather be bulk-generating a list of guids in the background that is continually replenished so that I always have pre-generated ones ready to hand out. I am using the uuid module in python on linux. I understand that this is using the uuidd daemon to get uuids. Does uuidd already take care of pre-genreating uuids so that it always has some ready? From the documentation it appears that it does not. Is there some setting in python or with uuidd to get it to do this automatically? Is there a more elegant approach then manually creating a background thread in my program that maintains a list of uuids?

• Any way to get read timeouts with Java NIO/selectors?

  I'm converting a Java server application which used blocking IO and thread-per-client to NIO and a single IO thread (probably a thread pool after I get the basic implementation done). The one thing I am having an issue with is disconnecting clients after they have been idle for a period. I had previously been using SO_TIMEOUT and blocking reads. However, with selector-based IO, reads don't block... I was hoping that I'd be able to set a timeout and be able to select on read timeout, with something like SelectionKey.isReadTimeout(), but nothing like that seems to exist. The current best solution I have come up with is to have a Timer with a TimerTask which keeps track of the keys which are waiting on read, and then canceling them and re-scheduling them on each read. Is there a better solution?

• Is it more efficient to always run a delete query, or to check if that information exists first

  Ok this is going to seem like a dumb question to experienced developers, but questions like this bother me until I ask them. So... is it more efficient to always run a delete query by default whether an entry exists or not, for example to delete a user name after a certain period of time (DELETE * from table where username=user), or should you check if that entry exists first using a select query and mysql_num_rows. What uses more processor on the server side? Obviously one approach contains more code, but I was wondering if certain mysql operations used a lot more cpu than others.

  I'm doing a basic select against a view. Unfortunately the result can be slow and I'm getting timeout errors intermittently. How can I increase the timeout? Using .NET 3.5, Sql Server 2000, Linq2Entities I'm using the very basic query List<MyData> result = db.MyData.Where(x.Attribute == search).ToList(); Fixing the query so that it's faster on the DB side is not an option here. Exact Error: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Update: I'd prefer to just change it for this one query.

• Flashing window in gnu screen

  I really like gnu screen but there is a problem in my environment when I use it. Examle: username@domain:/var/www$ l Display all 130 possibilities? (y or n) when you click [Tab] to perform autocompletion there is a screen flashing for a very short period of time(looks like white screen but I can see it for a very-very short time). There isn't any problems with that when I execute the same action in normal/non-screen environment.   I am getting an error whenever i try to run following unzip command from a python script which is running as a daemon Command : unzip abcd.zip /dev/null Error End-of-central-directory signature not found$ a zip file, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of abcd.zip$ abcd.zip.zip, and cannot find abcd.zip.ZIP, period. Once all approvals are completed the data shall be permanantly persisted into the actual table. Example: 1) Consider an entity called "User". One way to create the user is through the "Create Account Process". 2) The "Create Account Process" shall capture all the information of the User and store it in a temporary table in the database. 3) The data shall be used by the "Account Approval Process" to run its verification process. 4. After all the verification is completed successfully, the User data shall be persisted to the actual table. Question: Where to store the user data entered during "Create Account Process". Additionally, User data should be editable till the verification process is complete.

• TabWidget white foreground color?

  I don't know what I did but for a period of time my TabWidget had white colored tabs which looked really nice. I never set a theme or background/foreground color in my project at all. The next time I compiled it it reverted back to the gray tabs. My application is using the default dark theme. Even if I set the application theme to light, the tabs are still gray. So obviously it was something else that changed the tabs' color. Anyone know how to do this?

• Bulk Insert takes 4x as long on first operation of the day

  I do Bulk Inserts into a table with about 14 million rows at fiver minute increments during a 7 hour period during the day. These inserts take somewhere between 9-14 secs. However, the first insert always takes about 40 secs. Anyone know what SQL Server 2005 would be doing differently on the first insert into a table for that day? From what I've read I should probably use the SqlBulkCopy class instead of just using a bulk insert in a stored procedure. Is that that the general consensus?

• NLB and Host Header Value

  Background: We are using MOSS 2007 in farm configuration, 2 WFE, 1 Indexer and SQL Server. MS NLB is used for load balancing. Host header value mapped to Virtual IP of Cluster in DNS, is used while creating the web applications in MOSS and all are sharing port 80. Problem: When client tries to access the web application that are configured with host header values. Both of WFEs Hangs for 5 minutes, they stop responding to ping and browser shows 'Page not found'. In the Application Log on the WFE, this error is registered "provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired". Interestingly, the web application with no host header value and hosted on different ports is working correctly. Any clue to solve this problem will be helpful. Thks. Hafeez

• How does the momentum/inertial scroll work with the Magic Mouse on NSScrollView?

  When you scroll with the newer Apple Magic Mouse (at least on 10.6, I can't confirm any previous Mac OS) you get inertial scroll like scrolling on iPhone (that is, after a flick of the finger to scroll, it doesn't abruptly stop, but instead gradually slows down). This behaviour is "for free" with all NSScrollViews, it would appear. There are exceptional cases, such as Tweetie for Mac (I've heard Tweetie was written with a custom Table View class that works akin to how UITableView works on iPhone). My question is, how do the scroll views know how to do this inertial scrolling? My guess is the mouse [driver] repeatedly sends scroll events with a dampening scroll magnitude (or something like that) over the scroll period. But I'm not really sure how it works. I am having some scrolling problems in my scrollview class and I'm trying to figure out why (obviously we don't have the source code to Tweetie to see why it doesn't get the proper scrolling), but just trying to better understand how it works in order to fix my own problems.
