  • Do Java or C++ lack any OO features?

    I am interested in understanding object-oriented programming in a more academic and abstract way than I currently do, and want to know if there are any object-oriented concepts Java and C++ fail to implement. I realise neither of the languages are "pure" OO, but I am interested in what (if anything) they lack, not what they have extra.

  • How are OpenGL programs debugged?

    I'm trying to find what is causing a segfault when glDrawArrays is called (as gdb says) in my simple program. When I use the OpenGl calls directly, the program runs fine. But when I wrap them up into two classes (under construction, of vao and vbo) the program segfaults. So, in my wrappers, I definitly disabled something or set something I'm not supposed to. My question is, how do I get some diagnostics that will help me pinpoint the source of the problem ? I'm looking for something similar to what glGetShaderiv does, but for vao and vbo s, that will tell me if I have..say.. unbound a buffer by mistake. [I'm not posting the code here, but if any of you want to donate some time by testing a segfaulting example, here is a tar.gz of the source . You'll need working libraries of sfml-2.0rc, glew and gcc=4.6 .]

  • Do c++ templates make programs slow ?

    Hi, I have heard from many people that usage of templates make the code slow. Is it really true. I'm currently building a library. There are places where if templates are not created, it would result in code management problem. As of now I can think two solutions to this problem: o use #defines o Use templates and define all possible types in the header file/library itself but do not allow end user to make template instances. e.g. typedef Graph GraphI32; etc. Is there anyway, to restrict user from creating various template instances on their own. Help on above queries would be highly regarded.

  • Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

    This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them.   • Spring 3, Java EE 6

    I'm learning Java EE 6. I've seen how much progress it has achieved in this release of the umbrella specification. EJBs 3.1 are far easier and more lightweight than previous versions, and CDI is amazing. I'm not familiar with Spring, but I often read that it offered some neat features that the Java EE stack didn't. Yet I also read now that JEE has caught up, and can now fully compete with Spring. I know that choosing from both depends on many factors, but if we only focus on features, say the latest trends etc. Which one has the leading edge?. Can Spring 3 offer some assets The JAVA EE 6 stack can't? Also, what about Seam framework? From what I read it's like java ee 6 but with some additions?

  • How to add programs in context menu on desktop at one context name?

    Hello I'm searching for answer how to put programs (not program) in context menu of desktop at one context name? Example: I want to create new context name which can be extendable to put inside more programs. That is like "New" or "View" that show as more options after using it. Here is what i tried (and is working when you want to put one program to desktop): I created in registry "New Folder" with name of some programs (i.e. "notepad") inside of this location HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\ Inside of new created folder ("notepad") i put one more time "New Folder" and name it "command" (must be same name) Inside of "command" at string ("Default") put the location through notepad ("C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe") - and now when you click right mouse button on desktop will see new context text with name "notepad" what will of course open notepad if you use them Well what i'm searching for is to find solution of how to make context name which will offer as to use more that one programs, do you have any solution? O.S. win 7

  • How to only allow particular programs to modify certain files?

    I want to make certain directories on my drives read-only except to particular programs who will have full permissions. For example, the Microsoft Word might be allowed to modify the files in my Documents folder, but other programs (such as the Command Prompt) would not be allowed to. I'm guessing this requires a file system filter driver of some sort, but I don't know which programs have this capability. Is there any (free) program that can do this for me?

Currently I'm using System.Kind property to retrieve information regarding the programs from Windows Search but the results set does not look same like Windows 7 search. Order of items are different.   • What are best practices for testing programs with stochastic behavior?

    Doing R&D work, I often find myself writing programs that have some large degree of randomness in their behavior. For example, when I work in Genetic Programming, I often write programs that generate and execute arbitrary random source code. A problem with testing such code is that bugs are often intermittent and can be very hard to reproduce. This goes beyond just setting a random seed to the same value and starting execution over. For instance, code might read a message from the kernal ring buffer, and then make conditional jumps on the message contents. Naturally, the ring buffer's state will have changed when one later attempts to reproduce the issue. Even though this behavior is a feature it can trigger other code in unexpected ways, and thus often reveals bugs that unit tests (or human testers) don't find. Are there established best practices for testing systems of this sort? If so, some references would be very helpful. If not, any other suggestions are welcome!

  • How to cross-compile programs for the Raspberry Pi with gcc?

    I am fond of using gcc to compile small little C and C++ programs on my main computer. However, I also have a Raspberry Pi, and, being a 700-MHz single-core computer, I would prefer to not have to do my development work on it every time I want to create a binary for it. How (for I know that there's a way) do I cross-compile my program for the Raspberry Pi using my x86 laptop? And is there a way that I may compile C(++) programs on the Pi but produce an x86 binary? If it's any help, "The SoC is a Broadcom BCM2835. This contains an ARM1176JZFS, with floating point..." (according to the official Raspberry Pi FAQ).

  • Need Info on the Hidden Switch in SET - "/S" How to implement

    I am having some problems doing a proper search of "SET/S" or "SET /S" on google and other search providers. The difficulty arises with the SLASH "/", it is commonly used in search engines to add a "nearness" to the search parameter. I have found no way to escape the SLASH when searching for a SLASH. For those on this community, try searching this domain with the two search terms listed above. It just doesn't work, it ends up looking for SET S instead. But I digress. So Im asking the uber-guru's on this board to help me find out about the documentation of /S and how to implement SET /S in a batch file. SET is an internal DOS/cmd commandand allows many things incuding prompting the user, integer math and writing environment strings. in looking at this link: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/os2set.php it appears that the /S is only for OS2 but im thinking that this might not be the case, due to this: http://www.dostips.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2704, apparently used with substings and macros. any help is much appreciated

  • Windows 7 comments field missing when browsing network

    I have just purchased three Windows 7 Professional Dell 64-bit PCs for testing prior to upgrading our company’s 120+ PCs from Windows XP Professional. The setup is a standard domain with a Windows Server 2003 32-bit server. We name each PC XP1 to XP150 so that when users join or leave, I don’t have to rename the PC. We use the Description field to allocate the user’s name to each PC. We also have a share set up on each PC using the user’s name. When I browse the network using Windows Explorer in XP, I get a useful display. The left pane showing the PC number and the right pane showing NAME and COMMENTS So, for example I would see: XP01 Fred Bloggs (Each PC on a new row.) The right pane is my main tool for administering the network. I can easily see the PC number and the name of the user. However, in Windows 7, this seems to have been thrown out of the window and replaced with fields that I do not need and in my case always display the same info. "Name", "Category", "Workgroup", "Network Location" In my case the Name column gives the PC number (XP10) etc and all three other columns display identical useless information. So I can’t see who is using XP10. When I am in “help desk” mode, I would naturally ask the user’s name and use my remote desktop client to view their screen. The user isn’t aware of their PC name, so I am finding it impossible to match the user name with a PC number. Any ideas how to overcome this "by design" change to Windows 7?

  • Load program to one side of monitor in Windows 7

    This is a question to enhance the feature on Windows 7, where you drag the screen to one side and it docks to that side of the screen. Is there a way to have it so when I load a program, it knows that I always like it docked on the right side, so it just loads on the right side? And I don't have to drag it to the right. It will be done for Internet Explorer, so, if there is no setting on the Shortcut for this, can it be programmed into the browser?
