• Missing IUSR account on Windows Server 2008 R2 / IIS7.5

  Ok, I'm stumped. I've been given the job of installing PHP5.4 on this machine. One of the manual installation steps is to configure the IUSR account to have specific permissions. The problem is, I see the IIS_IUSRS group, but no IUSR account. The only users listed are the Admin user, a Guest account, and a user for the security software. I'm not really the Windows server type, more of a *NIX guy - so this is getting a little frustrating. I've searched everywhere and haven't found a suitable answer, but I have learned a lot about IIS7.5 - so it hasn't been a total waste of time. I've tried several recommendations and found several similar problems, but nothing has worked so far. I've also just tried making the IUSR account myself, but to no avail. If anyone knows how to get this going, I will be ever so grateful.

• Coco/R vs. ANTLR

  I'm evaluating using Coco/R vs. ANTLR for use in a C# project as part of what's essentially a scriptable mail-merge functionality. To parse the (simple) scripts, I'll need a parser. I've focussed on Coco/R and ANTLR because both seem fairly mature and well-maintained and capable of generating decent C# parsers. Neither seem to be trivial to use either, however, and simplicity is something I'd appreciate - particularly maintainability by others. Does anyone have any recommendations to make? What are the pros/cons of either for a parsing a small language - or am I looking into the wrong things entirely? How well do these integrate into a typical continuous integration setup? • Enhance Localization performances? (ComponentResourceManager.ApplyResources)

  Dear all, After experiencing some performances issues on my client side, we decided to give a try to some of the performance profilers to try to find the bottleneck or identify the guilty parts of the code. Of course, as many performance investigations, the problems comes from various things, but something I find out is that the ComponentResourceManager.ApplyResources of my user controls takes way too much time in the construction of my forms: more than 24% of the construction time is spent in the ApplyResources inside the InitializeComponent(). This seems rather a lot for only "finding a resource string and putting it in it's container". What is exactly done in the ComponentResourceManager.ApplyResources ? I guess more than searching the string, if not it wouldn't take that long. Is there a way to enhance the performances of the localization? Our software is localized in several languages, so we do need to keep this multi-lingual feature. Any recommendations regarding this issue? Thanks! PS: We are coding in C#, .NET 3.5 SP1.

• Java 2D Game Frameworks

  I have been looking at frameworks for writing 2D games in Java - part of a growing desire to rediscover my roots in writing those simple but addictive video games. I have googled and found some possibilities, but it's hard to judge which is best without investing significant time in each. Does anyone out there have any recommendations from experience, preferably with a list of pro's and con's for the framework. NOTE: I am not looking so much for comparisons between frameworks but, rather, feedback on any given framework from actually having used it firsthand, or knowing someone who has. The other possibility I am considering is rolling my own, but would rather not. EDIT: I am targeting Java on the Desktop, and expect capable machines, though not state of the art. • Offer the posibility to preview a personalized product

  I want to give my client's the possibility to preview their personalized product. In a nutshell, personalization means the user specifies some text and positions the text somewhere on an image of the product. A great example of what I'd like to achieve is this. Select a frame size and then hit Personalize, after you select the occasion and add the text you can chose to preview the product. The hardest thing to do here, as I see it, is to generate the image. The positioning of text will probably be made in javascript. Do you have any recommendations? Just as a note, using scene7 is not a possibility. Thanks.

• IMAP Idle Timeout

  Lets say I am using IMAP IDLE to monitor changes in a mail folder. The IMAP spec says that IDLE connections should only stay alive for 30 minutes max, but it is recommended that a lower number of minutes is selected - say 20 minutes, then cancel the idle and restart. I am wondering what would happen if the mail contents changed between the idle canceling, and the new idle being created. An email could potentially be missed. Given that RECENT is a bit vague, this could lead to getting a message list before the old idle ends, and a new idle starts. But this is almost the same as polling every 20 minutes, and defeats some of the benefit of idle. Alternatively, a new idle session could be started prior to terminating the expiring one. But in any case, I think this problem has already been solved so here I am asking for recommendations. Thanks, Paul

• Making ehcache read-write for test code and read-only for production code

  I would like to annotate many of my Hibernate entities that contain reference data and/or configuration data with @Cache(usage = CacheConcurrencyStrategy.READ_ONLY) However, my JUnit tests are setting up and tearing down some of this reference/configuration data using the Hibernate entities. Is there a recommended way of having entities be read-write during test setup and teardown but read-only for production code? Two of my immediate thoughts for non-ideal workarounds are: Using NONSTRICT_READ_WRITE, but I am not sure what the hidden downsides are. Creating subclassed entities in my test code to override the read-only cache annotation. Any recommendations on the cleanest way to handle this? (Note: Project uses maven.)

I was looking for recommendations and advice for a new project I was setting up that will allow for a few key things Scalability Manage multiple overlapping releases Geared more around .NET however allows for legacy applications (VB, ASP and VBS) I am really looking for any lessons learned from other teams. I come from a StarTeam background and we used view labels and release labels to manage multiple overlapping projects. View labels geared more towards compiled code and SQL and the revision labels were used for VB/ASP projects. • Convert non-breaking spaces to spaces in Ruby

  I have cases where user-entered data from an html textarea or input is sometimes sent with \u00a0 (non-breaking spaces) instead of spaces when encoded as utf-8 json. I believe that to be a bug in Firefox, as I know that the user isn't intentionally putting in non-breaking spaces instead of spaces. There are also two bugs in Ruby, one of which can be used to combat the other. For whatever reason \s doesn't match \u00a0 However [^[:print:]] (which definitely should not match) and \xC2\xA0 both will match, but I consider those to be less-than-ideal ways to deal with the issue. Are there other recommendations for getting around this issue?

• Modal MessageBox for ASP.NET without jQuery

  I have an assembly with custom ASP.NET server controls that is used in several, mostly in-house, ASP.NET 2.0 applications. The server controls use simple modal popup messageboxes, which are currently implemented using the javascript alert and confirm functions. I want to release a new version of this assembly that uses a better solution for messageboxes, including support for Yes/No buttons. The appearance would be something like a simplified version of the Ajax Control Toolkit ModalPopup extender (sample here). My constraints are that this should be as easy as possible to integrate into existing ASP.NET 2.0 applications without introducing new dependencies: ideally just drop in a new version of the assembly, that contains all the javascript it needs as an embedded resource, and possibly a CSS file. Because of this constraint, I am not considering solutions I've seen that use jquery, or the ASP.NET Ajax Control Toolkit, which appears to require adding elements to pages that use the extenders (ScriptManagers and the like). Any recommendations?

• OpenLDAP and user role based accedss controll (RBAC)

  Hello, my company uses an openldap server which stores corporate user information ((username,passwd and some other information like email are stored in ldap).. Till now they only use it for authentication but now we'd like to use for authentication also, this means that we'll create roles (as ldap attributes in a new schema) and assign those roles in the users. My actual question is if there is a best-practice to follow for using openldap for authentication on many applications (most written in php). I understand how to make roles and assign them to users for just one application, but what about the others (each application of course has its own roles). Should I just create an ou=appName,ou=roles,dc=mycompany for each application, put the roles as attributes there and just add each role as an attribute of the user object ? is there any other recommendations ? thanks

• Select all links from a Html table using XPath (and HtmlAgilityPack)

  What I am trying to achieve is to extract all links with a href attribute that starts with http://, https:// or /. These links lie within a table (tbody tr td etc) with a certain class. I thought I could specify just the the a element without the whole path to it but it does not seem to work. I get a NullReferenceException at the line that selects the links: var table = doc.DocumentNode.SelectSingleNode("//table[@class='containerTable']"); if (table != null) { foreach (HtmlNode item in table.SelectNodes("a[starts-with(@href, 'https://')]")) { //not working I don't know about any recommendations or best practices when it comes to XPath. What I would like is to find number of screencasts that would cover basics of Linux commands, server administration, commonly performed tasks etc (no GUI, only terminal).   HI, we are building a multi-tenant application, which will support that each tenant can have a unique top level domain, the application is build using the asp.net 3.5 and SQL servr 2005, while each tenant will have different database. • Should we use Visual Studio 2010 for all SQL Server Database Development?

  Our company currently has seven dedicated SQL Server 2008 servers each running an average of 10 databases. All databases have many stored procedures and UDFs that commonly reference other databases both on the same server and also across linked servers. We currently use SSMS for all database related administration and development but we have recently purchased Visual Studio 2010 primarily for ongoing C# WinForms and ASP.NET development. I have used VS2010 to perform schema comparisons when rolling out changes from a development server into production and I'm finding it great for this task. We would like to consider using VS2010 for all database development going forward but as far as I understand, we would have to set up ALL databases as projects because of the dependencies on linked servers etc. My question is, do you have any experience using VS2010 for database development in a similar environment? Is it easy to use in tandem with SSMS or is it a one way street once VS2010 projects have been set up for all databases? Can you make any recommendations/impart any experience with a similar scenario? Thanks, Luke

• Storing a large list in isolatedStorage on WP7

  I'm storing a List with around 3,000 objects in Isolatedstorage using Xml serialize. It takes too long to deserialize this and I was wondering if you have any recommendations to speed it up. The time is tolerable to deserialize up to 500 objects, but takes forever to deserialize 3000. Does it take longer just on the emulator and will be faster on the phone? I did a whole bunch of searching and some article said to use a binary stream reader, but I can't find it. Whether I store in binary or xml doesn't matter, I just want to persist the List. I don't want to look at asynchronous loading just yet...

• Web Page Design Get Distorted in Desktop PC Monitor

I think the solution is giving percentage instead of absolute numbers like 240px to height and width of divs. What do you think ? Do you have another recommendations ? Thanks in advance. For example assume a that formal releases are generated for QA once per week. At what point do you mark bugs as resolved? When the developer has committed their changes? As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. • Interface Photoshop size for iPhone app

  Hello, I am building an iPhone app interface and I know the dpi has to be 163, but when it comes to the size of the file, I was looking through all the recommendations and found 2 different answers... Does anyone know what size should i set the Photoshop file at? The answers I have so far are: "The screen on the iPhone is 480×320, minus the 20-pixel status bar (making a 460×320 working screen size). The screen shots on the App Store should not include the status bar." "400 x 320 or 960 x 640 (iPhone 4) You must also consider the landscape mode (320 x 400 and 640 x 960)" I would really appreciate the answer. Thanks!

• OOP Design of items in a Point-of-Sale system

  I am implementing a Point-of-Sale system. In the system I represent an Item in three places, and I wounder how I should represent them in OOP. First I have the WarehouseItem, that contains price, purchase price, info about the supplier, suppliers price, info about the product and quantity in warehouse. Then I have CartItem, which contains the same fields as WarehouseItem, but adds NrOfItems and Discount. And finally I have ReceiptItem, thats contains an item where I have stripped of info about the supplier, and only contains the price that was payed. Are there any OOP-recommendations, best-practices or design patterns that I could apply for this? I don't really know if CartItem should contain (wrap) an WarehouseItem, or extend it, or if I just should copy the fields that I need. Maybe I should create an Item-class where I keep all common fields, and then extend it to WarehouseItem, CartItem and ReceiptItem. Sometimes I think that it is good to keep the field of the item and just display the information that is needed.

• SSRS 2008 Installation Guidelines/Best Practices?

  I know I have seen recommendations for installing SSRS 2005 and it stated that you should separate SSRS from the DB Engine that hosts the data sources for your reports, that you should not install them on the same server. Is there any documentation for SSRS 2008 that provides guidelines/best practices for installation? I am assuming that the same holds true for SSRS 2008 as it did for SSRS 2005 but have not seen it specifically stated anywhere. We have a project that will utilize SSRS 2008 and there is a difference of opinion on where to install it, on it's own dedicated server or on the same SQL Server as the report data sources. If there is a link to any documentation that could be provided it would be gratefully appreciated, all I am finding besides what is in BOL refers to 2005. Thanks in advance!
