I WANT TO FORMAT MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE WHICH IS A WESTERN DIGITAL 500GB, THROUGH CMD DOS COMMAND BUT IT FAILS BECAUSE ALL NTFS BOOT SECTORS ARE UNWRITABLE. HERE ARE THE COMMANDS I GAVE AND WHAT I GOT IN RETURN! C:\Users\Stefanos&FratzeskosFORMAT F: /Q The type of the file system is RAW. The new file system is NTFS. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE F: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Y QuickFormatting 476269M Volume label (32 characters, ENTER for none)? Creating file system structures. The first NTFS boot sector is unwriteable. All NTFS boot sectors are unwriteable. Cannot continue. Format failed. IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO FORMAT MY DISC?

  • Mac .flac player that organizes folder structure? Can Songbird write to a ntfs drive?

    - by CT
I have a bunch of music in .flac format on my pc. I would like to put that music on an external drive which I can access from both my Mac and PC at work. I have the drive formatted in NTFS using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G drivers. Through Finder I write to the drive fine. If I go to Show Info I see that I have custom access. I am trying to use Songbird to play said .flac files. I have Folder Management turned on. When I try to import to Library it errors out and says make sure drive exists and is writable. This seems like a permissions issue but I do not see how I could change them. If anyone knows of a good .flac player for the mac that also organizes folder structures like iTunes please let me know. This and the ability to write to a NTFS drive is what I am looking for.

  • Web and email host migration - Limitations and suggestions to make the process as easy as possible.

    - by Jack Hickerson
I developed a website for a friend of mine to replace his current 'all inclusive' provider (website creation, updating, web hosting, email hosting). I've already paid for a hosting service which currently houses the website which I have created. I need to cancel the previous service provider to get the domain migrated to the new host, however I will still need to transfer or recreate all of the email addresses that everyone in his company had previously. Is there an easy way migrate email accounts (still linked to the same domain) while migrating to a different host? Will any methods allow all users to retain their archived emails and folder structures? What is the process to do so. Because the current provider is a rather large website development and hosting company, I will have limited access to the data they have stored. As you can probably tell, my knowledge in this area is very limited - any/all suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Jack

  • Best way to compare (diff) a full directory structure?

    - by Adam Matan
Hi, What's the best way to compare directory structures? I have a backup utility which uses rsync. I want to tell the exact differences (in terms of file sizes and last-changed dates) between the source and the backup. Something like: Local file Remote file Compare /home/udi/1.txt (date)(size) /home/udi/1.txt (date)(size) EQUAL /home/udi/2.txt (date)(size) /home/udi/2.txt (date)(size) DIFFERENT Of course, the tool can be ready-made or an idea for a python script. Many thanks! Udi

  • rsyslog appears to act on old configuration

    - by Jeff Lee
I'm using a template to dynamically generate rsyslog filenames. I've made some changes from my original format, but rsyslog still appears to be using both the new template and the old after restarting. My filename template went from this: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" To this: $template RemoteDailyLog,"/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%fromhost-ip%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" I stopped rsyslogd using service rsyslog stop, deleted all of my log files using rm -rf /var/log/remote/*, and then restarted rsyslogd with service rsyslog start. The problem is rsyslog seems to be building folder structures of the type "/var/log/remote/%hostname%/%$year%/%$month%/%$day%.log" (i.e., without the remote IP), which no longer appears anywhere in my configuration. Is it possible that old log or config data have been cached somewhere and are being preserved through the server restart? This is creeping me out a little.

  • How to determine if a file has been backed up?

    - by Console
I try to consolidate old drives to new ones of larger capacity. Sometimes files have been renamed, but are otherwise identical. Sometimes an old directory has just a few more files in it than a newer directory with the same name. Sometimes a file has the same name but the size differs. So I often find myself asking the question: Are there any files on this old drive or directory that I haven't already copied to the new drive? I just want to know that I have the files, I don't want to try and sync stuff automatically (Syncing tools tend to just sync, creating duplicate folder structures and other problems, so I prefer to do it by hand). Basically, if an old drive has a file called "foo.bar" ten directories deep, and my new big drive has an identical file called "oldstuff.zip" in the root, I just want a "yes you have it" or "no, unique files exist". Is there a free tool, a script or a quick and easy method (Mac/Unix or Windows) to get the answer?

  • How to rename a BTRFS subvolume?

    - by hochl
I have a BTRFS filesystem with a set of subvolumes in it. So far so good. I need to change the name of a subvolume, unfortunately the btrfs program does not allow me to rename a subvolume. Searching with Google has yielded some results, one said I can just mv, the other said I can just snapshot to a new name and delete the old subvolume. Before I crash my partition and have to reload it from the backup (it's quite large), my question is: What is the currently best way to rename a subvolume? Is it ok to just mv it, or will it invalidate some internal structures? Is making a new snapshot and removing the old subvolume the way to go, or has this some drawbacks? I know everything is still experimental, but for my purposes it has been working quite well (so far, and I have incremental backups for each day).

  • How do you open a folder in OSX using the keyboard?

    - by Daniel T.
On Windows, pressing enter when you highlight on a folder in Windows Explorer will open that folder. On OSX, pressing enter when you highlight a folder edits the folder's name (like F2 in Windows). Is there a keyboard shortcut to do the same thing on Windows, so that you'll open the folder? It doesn't have to be enter, but I'd like to know if there's another hotkey that does it. The reason why I ask is because I like to navigate through deep folder structures by using the arrow keys for navigation and enter to drill down into them.

  • Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

    - by snowballhg
We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? Thanks

  • rsnapshot stats

    - by Obscur Moirage
I'd like to retrieve the following stats from rsnapshot files synced added files modded files deleted files Is there a feature to retrieve these in rsnapshot, or is there another product that's able to do it? EDIT: As requested, I'll try to show that I'm not just asking what I want to do without any research. I wasn't able to locate any rsnapshot feature doing this. Maybe I'm searching in a wrong direction. So, I've built a not very pretty script, called each time before rsnapshot is ran. This Perl script stores each file MD5, in order to compare backup files structures between rsnapshot updates. I'm pretty sure it's worthless to show this code here. I think that keeping an eye on what change on a server, for example, is a useful feature. So, I'm asking. @pauska Most of the time, I'm trying to search for an answer myself, which is not the case here. Thanks

  • $DISPLAY dependent gtk themes

    - by Vlad Seghete
I have a computer at home that I log into remotely. The "monitor" for it is a TV, so I want gtk applications to use a large font and icon theme, which I managed to do by editing the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file and some other similar stuff. What I want to be able to do is have a separate theme for when I'm logging in remotely. The best way to explain is that I would like my gtk theme choice to be dependent on the X display that the application is started on. For example, if I start something on :0.0 then that is the TV and I want large fonts, but if I start it on localhost:10.0 I want to use a regular size font, because it will get rendered on my laptop screen. The elegant solution would be to have some sort of IF statement in the .gtkrc-2.0 file that checks the $DISPLAY variable and behaves accordingly. The problem is I can't find any documentation on control structures in .gktrc files, or if it's even possible to do that.

  • Backing up an rsnapshot directory to a remote device

    - by user123480
I have a local backup server that uses rsnapshot with hard links that contains about 10TBs of information which add about 4 to 5GBs per day. It's works great. I've been requested to set up and maintain a remote backup of the local rsnapshot directory structure. It's a nightly backup. I've tried using rsync with encryption which takes forever and eats system resources. A previous post says not to use rsync with hard links for that reason. I need a suggestion of how I can keep the local and remote copies of the rsnapshot structures in sync? Thanks

  • MySQL - complete server migration (Ubuntu) [closed]

    - by Mr A
Possible Duplicate: How to copy and move mysql database Dump all databases with SSH access I'm setting up a new dev machine, and I have the old one sitting right next to me. I'd like to do an exact copy of all MySQL structures and data from the old machine to the new. Nothing fancy needs to happen (it's a dev machine). No replication. I don't care about "downtimes" etc. Is there a super simple way to do this? For example, I have SSH on the old server, can I just use Nautilus, do a connect to server, and then transfer a folder over, replacing another folder with it and be done? It's the same version of MySQL on both sides. Same version of Ubuntu. Same in most respects.

  • Configure redis to not have everything in memory?

    - by acidzombie24
I like redis because it lets me do operations on data structures. I wanted to see what would happen if i were to put more data into redis then i have for ram. So i wrote a loop that inserted 30k bytes repeatedly and set maxmemory 100MB. I figure it would stay at 100mb. It kept growing. Past 1gb then past 2gb. Suddenly it crashed because i ran the 32bit version. Now... i dont understand what the point of maxmemory is? I am using the windows version so maybe its ignored. Does redis have to have everything in memory? If i have a site (on linux) with a 10gb database and 512mb on the machine will redis work? I don't need it to be amazingly fast i just prefer to modify data in it then sql (although i hope it is still faster then mysql)

  • What's faster, cp -R or unpacking tar.gz files?

    - by Buttle Butkus
I have some tar.gz files that total many gigabytes on a CentOS system. Most of the tar.gz files are actually pretty small, but the ones with images are large. One is 7.7G, another is about 4G, and a couple around 1G. I have unpacked the files once already and now I want a second copy of all those files. I assumed that copying the unpacked files would be faster than re-unpacking them. But I started running cp -R about 10 minutes ago and so far less than 500M is copied. I feel certain that the unpacking process was faster. Am I right? And if so, why? It doesn't seem to make sense that unpacking would be faster than simply duplicating existing structures.

  • In a virtual machine monitor such as VMware’s ESXi Server, how are shadow page tables implemented?

    - by ali01
My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

  • How does one view the "inline docs" of a .cpp file?

    - by Mala
I have cpp files peppered with comments such as the following before every function: /** * @brief Set the normal and expansion handshake timeouts. * * @param wm Array of wiimote_t structures. * @param wiimotes Number of objects in the wm array. * @param normal_timeout The timeout in milliseconds for a normal read. * @param exp_timeout The timeout in millisecondsd to wait for an expansion handshake. */ I assume from the format that there has to be some way of exporting this into a "friendly" format, perhaps html, which can then be read in a manner similar to the Java API. How would I do this? (I'm on Windows 7, running MS Visual Studio 2010)

  • Transfer using linux ssh and maintaining permissions

    - by jbolt
I need to transfer files across ssh to another server. The file structures are identical on both sides. I have used scp -r but that does not retain the orginal file/dir permissions. rsync does the job of keeping the permissions in tact but does not delete the files on the destination side if I want to overwrite them because of changes. I know rsync will write the changes when the source files are newer but I need it to just copy everything reguardless of the date (ie replace destination directory with the one I am moving) without having to shell into the destination first and manually delete the dir. I heard tar can do this but I can not seem to get it to work without errors. The syntax is tar -cf - /directory/directory | ssh host.name tar -xf - C /destination_directory Any help would be appreciated.

  • Move database from SQL 7 to 2005 / 2008

    - by etechpartner
I have several pretty large databases located in a SQL Server 7 box. Whats the best way to get them into SQL Server 2008? As far as I know, there were changes to the underlying file structures so I am not sure that a simple detach/attach would work. When I tried attaching from 2008 it complained strongly. "Version no longer supported" etc etc. What options do I have? Are there any tools on the market that can connect to both 7 and 2008 and then move the schema and data?

  • How to implement an offline reader writer lock

    - by Peter Morris
Some context for the question All objects in this question are persistent. All requests will be from a Silverlight client talking to an app server via a binary protocol (Hessian) and not WCF. Each user will have a session key (not an ASP.NET session) which will be a string, integer, or GUID (undecided so far). Some objects might take a long time to edit (30 or more minutes) so we have decided to use pessimistic offline locking. Pessimistic because having to reconcile conflicts would be far too annoying for users, offline because the client is not permanently connected to the server. Rather than storing session/object locking information in the object itself I have decided that any aggregate root that may have its instances locked should implement an interface ILockable public interface ILockable { Guid LockID { get; } } This LockID will be the identity of a "Lock" object which holds the information of which session is locking it. Now, if this were simple pessimistic locking I'd be able to achieve this very simply (using an incrementing version number on Lock to identify update conflicts), but what I actually need is ReaderWriter pessimistic offline locking. The reason is that some parts of the application will perform actions that read these complex structures. These include things like Reading a single structure to clone it. Reading multiple structures in order to create a binary file to "publish" the data to an external source. Read locks will be held for a very short period of time, typically less than a second, although in some circumstances they could be held for about 5 seconds at a guess. Write locks will mostly be held for a long time as they are mostly held by humans. There is a high probability of two users trying to edit the same aggregate at the same time, and a high probability of many users needing to temporarily read-lock at the same time too. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might implement this. One additional point to make is that if I want to place a write lock and there are some read locks, I would like to "queue" the write lock so that no new read locks are placed. If the read locks are removed withing X seconds then the write lock is obtained, if not then the write lock backs off; no new read-locks would be placed while a write lock is queued. So far I have this idea The Lock object will have a version number (int) so I can detect multi-update conflicts, reload, try again. It will have a string[] for read locks A string to hold the session ID that has a write lock A string to hold the queued write lock Possibly a recursion counter to allow the same session to lock multiple times (for both read and write locks), but not sure about this yet. Rules: Can't place a read lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. Can't place a write lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. If there are no locks at all then a write lock may be placed. If there are read locks then a write lock will be queued instead of a full write lock placed. (If after X time the read locks are not gone the lock backs off, otherwise it is upgraded). Can't queue a write lock for a session that has a read lock. Can anyone see any problems? Suggest alternatives? Anything? I'd appreciate feedback before deciding on what approach to take.

  • What am I doing wrong with this use of StructLayout( LayoutKind.Explicit ) when calling a PInvoke st

    - by csharptest.net
The following is a complete program. It works fine as long as you don't uncomment the '#define BROKEN' at the top. The break is due to a PInvoke failing to marshal a union correctly. The INPUT_RECORD structure in question has a number of substructures that might be used depending on the value in EventType. What I don't understand is that when I define only the single child structure of KEY_EVENT_RECORD it works with the explicit declaration at offset 4. But when I add the other structures at the same offset the structure's content get's totally hosed. //UNCOMMENT THIS LINE TO BREAK IT: //#define BROKEN using System; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; class ConIOBroken { static void Main() { int nRead = 0; IntPtr handle = GetStdHandle(-10 /*STD_INPUT_HANDLE*/); Console.Write("Press the letter: 'a': "); INPUT_RECORD record = new INPUT_RECORD(); do { ReadConsoleInputW(handle, ref record, 1, ref nRead); } while (record.EventType != 0x0001/*KEY_EVENT*/); Assert.AreEqual((short)0x0001, record.EventType); Assert.AreEqual(true, record.KeyEvent.bKeyDown); Assert.AreEqual(0x00000000, record.KeyEvent.dwControlKeyState & ~0x00000020);//strip num-lock and test Assert.AreEqual('a', record.KeyEvent.UnicodeChar); Assert.AreEqual((short)0x0001, record.KeyEvent.wRepeatCount); Assert.AreEqual((short)0x0041, record.KeyEvent.wVirtualKeyCode); Assert.AreEqual((short)0x001e, record.KeyEvent.wVirtualScanCode); } static class Assert { public static void AreEqual(object x, object y) { if (!x.Equals(y)) throw new ApplicationException(); } } [DllImport("Kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Unicode, SetLastError = true)] public static extern IntPtr GetStdHandle(int nStdHandle); [DllImport("Kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Unicode, SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool ReadConsoleInputW(IntPtr hConsoleInput, ref INPUT_RECORD lpBuffer, int nLength, ref int lpNumberOfEventsRead); [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Explicit)] public struct INPUT_RECORD { [FieldOffset(0)] public short EventType; //union { [FieldOffset(4)] public KEY_EVENT_RECORD KeyEvent; #if BROKEN [FieldOffset(4)] public MOUSE_EVENT_RECORD MouseEvent; [FieldOffset(4)] public WINDOW_BUFFER_SIZE_RECORD WindowBufferSizeEvent; [FieldOffset(4)] public MENU_EVENT_RECORD MenuEvent; [FieldOffset(4)] public FOCUS_EVENT_RECORD FocusEvent; //} #endif } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct KEY_EVENT_RECORD { public bool bKeyDown; public short wRepeatCount; public short wVirtualKeyCode; public short wVirtualScanCode; public char UnicodeChar; public int dwControlKeyState; } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct MOUSE_EVENT_RECORD { public COORD dwMousePosition; public int dwButtonState; public int dwControlKeyState; public int dwEventFlags; }; [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct WINDOW_BUFFER_SIZE_RECORD { public COORD dwSize; } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct MENU_EVENT_RECORD { public int dwCommandId; } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct FOCUS_EVENT_RECORD { public bool bSetFocus; } [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)] public struct COORD { public short X; public short Y; } } UPDATE: For those worried about the struct declarations themselves: bool is treated as a 32-bit value the reason for offset(4) on the data is to allow for the 32-bit structure alignment which prevents the union from beginning at offset 2. Again, my problem isn't making PInvoke work at all, it's trying to figure out why these additional structures (supposedly at the same offset) are fowling up the data by simply adding them.

  • XDocument + IEnumerable is causing out of memory exception in System.Xml.Linq.dll

    - by Manatherin
Basically I have a program which, when it starts loads a list of files (as FileInfo) and for each file in the list it loads a XML document (as XDocument). The program then reads data out of it into a container class (storing as IEnumerables), at which point the XDocument goes out of scope. The program then exports the data from the container class to a database. After the export the container class goes out of scope, however, the garbage collector isn't clearing up the container class which, because its storing as IEnumerable, seems to lead to the XDocument staying in memory (Not sure if this is the reason but the task manager is showing the memory from the XDocument isn't being freed). As the program is looping through multiple files eventually the program is throwing a out of memory exception. To mitigate this ive ended up using System.GC.Collect(); to force the garbage collector to run after the container goes out of scope. this is working but my questions are: Is this the right thing to do? (Forcing the garbage collector to run seems a bit odd) Is there a better way to make sure the XDocument memory is being disposed? Could there be a different reason, other than the IEnumerable, that the document memory isnt being freed? Thanks. Edit: Code Samples: Container Class: public IEnumerable<CustomClassOne> CustomClassOne { get; set; } public IEnumerable<CustomClassTwo> CustomClassTwo { get; set; } public IEnumerable<CustomClassThree> CustomClassThree { get; set; } ... public IEnumerable<CustomClassNine> CustomClassNine { get; set; }</code></pre> Custom Class: public long VariableOne { get; set; } public int VariableTwo { get; set; } public DateTime VariableThree { get; set; } ... Anyway that's the basic structures really. The Custom Classes are populated through the container class from the XML document. The filled structures themselves use very little memory. A container class is filled from one XML document, goes out of scope, the next document is then loaded e.g. public static void ExportAll(IEnumerable<FileInfo> files) { foreach (FileInfo file in files) { ExportFile(file); //Temporary to clear memory System.GC.Collect(); } } private static void ExportFile(FileInfo file) { ContainerClass containerClass = Reader.ReadXMLDocument(file); ExportContainerClass(containerClass); //Export simply dumps the data from the container class into a database //Container Class (and any passed container classes) goes out of scope at end of export } public static ContainerClass ReadXMLDocument(FileInfo fileToRead) { XDocument document = GetXDocument(fileToRead); var containerClass = new ContainerClass(); //ForEach customClass in containerClass //Read all data for customClass from XDocument return containerClass; } Forgot to mention this bit (not sure if its relevent), the files can be compressed as .gz so I have the GetXDocument() method to load it private static XDocument GetXDocument(FileInfo fileToRead) { XDocument document; using (FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(fileToRead.FullName, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.Read)) { if (String.Compare(fileToRead.Extension, ".gz", true) == 0) { using (GZipStream zipStream = new GZipStream(fileStream, CompressionMode.Decompress)) { document = XDocument.Load(zipStream); } } else { document = XDocument.Load(fileStream); } return document; } } Hope this is enough information. Thanks Edit: The System.GC.Collect() is not working 100% of the time, sometimes the program seems to retain the XDocument, anyone have any idea why this might be?

  • Dynamic JSON Parsing in .NET with JsonValue

    - by Rick Strahl
So System.Json has been around for a while in Silverlight, but it's relatively new for the desktop .NET framework and now moving into the lime-light with the pending release of ASP.NET Web API which is bringing a ton of attention to server side JSON usage. The JsonValue, JsonObject and JsonArray objects are going to be pretty useful for Web API applications as they allow you dynamically create and parse JSON values without explicit .NET types to serialize from or into. But even more so I think JsonValue et al. are going to be very useful when consuming JSON APIs from various services. Yes I know C# is strongly typed, why in the world would you want to use dynamic values? So many times I've needed to retrieve a small morsel of information from a large service JSON response and rather than having to map the entire type structure of what that service returns, JsonValue actually allows me to cherry pick and only work with the values I'm interested in, without having to explicitly create everything up front. With JavaScriptSerializer or DataContractJsonSerializer you always need to have a strong type to de-serialize JSON data into. Wouldn't it be nice if no explicit type was required and you could just parse the JSON directly using a very easy to use object syntax? That's exactly what JsonValue, JsonObject and JsonArray accomplish using a JSON parser and some sweet use of dynamic sauce to make it easy to access in code. Creating JSON on the fly with JsonValue Let's start with creating JSON on the fly. It's super easy to create a dynamic object structure. JsonValue uses the dynamic  keyword extensively to make it intuitive to create object structures and turn them into JSON via dynamic object syntax. Here's an example of creating a music album structure with child songs using JsonValue:[TestMethod] public void JsonValueOutputTest() { // strong type instance var jsonObject = new JsonObject(); // dynamic expando instance you can add properties to dynamic album = jsonObject; album.AlbumName = "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"; album.Artist = "AC/DC"; album.YearReleased = 1977; album.Songs = new JsonArray() as dynamic; dynamic song = new JsonObject(); song.SongName = "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"; song.SongLength = "4:11"; album.Songs.Add(song); song = new JsonObject(); song.SongName = "Love at First Feel"; song.SongLength = "3:10"; album.Songs.Add(song); Console.WriteLine(album.ToString()); } This produces proper JSON just as you would expect: {"AlbumName":"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap","Artist":"AC\/DC","YearReleased":1977,"Songs":[{"SongName":"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap","SongLength":"4:11"},{"SongName":"Love at First Feel","SongLength":"3:10"}]} The important thing about this code is that there's no explicitly type that is used for holding the values to serialize to JSON. I am essentially creating this value structure on the fly by adding properties and then serialize it to JSON. This means this code can be entirely driven at runtime without compile time restraints of structure for the JSON output. Here I use JsonObject() to create a new object and immediately cast it to dynamic. JsonObject() is kind of similar in behavior to ExpandoObject in that it allows you to add properties by simply assigning to them. Internally, JsonValue/JsonObject these values are stored in pseudo collections of key value pairs that are exposed as properties through the DynamicObject functionality in .NET. The syntax gets a little tedious only if you need to create child objects or arrays that have to be explicitly defined first. Other than that the syntax looks like normal object access sytnax. Always remember though these values are dynamic - which means no Intellisense and no compiler type checking. It's up to you to ensure that the values you create are accessed consistently and without typos in your code. Note that you can also access the JsonValue instance directly and get access to the underlying type. This means you can assign properties by string, which can be useful for fully data driven JSON generation from other structures. Below you can see both styles of access next to each other:// strong type instance var jsonObject = new JsonObject(); // you can explicitly add values here jsonObject.Add("Entered", DateTime. Now); // expando style instance you can just 'use' properties dynamic album = jsonObject; album.AlbumName = "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"; JsonValue internally stores properties keys and values in collections and you can iterate over them at runtime. You can also manipulate the collections if you need to to get the object structure to look exactly like you want. Again, if you've used ExpandoObject before JsonObject/Value are very similar in the behavior of the structure. Reading JSON strings into JsonValue The JsonValue structure supports importing JSON via the Parse() and Load() methods which can read JSON data from a string or various streams respectively. Essentially JsonValue includes the core JSON parsing to turn a JSON string into a collection of JsonValue objects that can be then referenced using familiar dynamic object syntax. Here's a simple example:[TestMethod] public void JsonValueParsingTest() { var jsonString = @"{""Name"":""Rick"",""Company"":""West Wind"",""Entered"":""2012-03-16T00:03:33.245-10:00""}"; dynamic json = JsonValue.Parse(jsonString); // values require casting string name = json.Name; string company = json.Company; DateTime entered = json.Entered; Assert.AreEqual(name, "Rick"); Assert.AreEqual(company, "West Wind"); } The JSON string represents an object with three properties which is parsed into a JsonValue object and cast to dynamic. Once cast to dynamic I can then go ahead and access the object using familiar object syntax. Note that the actual values - json.Name, json.Company, json.Entered - are actually of type JsonPrimitive and I have to assign them to their appropriate types first before I can do type comparisons. The dynamic properties will automatically cast to the right type expected as long as the compiler can resolve the type of the assignment or usage. The AreEqual() method oesn't as it expects two object instances and comparing json.Company to "West Wind" is comparing two different types (JsonPrimitive to String) which fails. So the intermediary assignment is required to make the test pass. The JSON structure can be much more complex than this simple example. Here's another example of an array of albums serialized to JSON and then parsed through with JsonValue():[TestMethod] public void JsonArrayParsingTest() { var jsonString = @"[ { ""Id"": ""b3ec4e5c"", ""AlbumName"": ""Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"", ""Artist"": ""AC/DC"", ""YearReleased"": 1977, ""Entered"": ""2012-03-16T00:13:12.2810521-10:00"", ""AlbumImageUrl"": ""http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61kTaH-uZBL._AA115_.jpg"", ""AmazonUrl"": ""http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008BXJ4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=westwindtechn-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00008BXJ4"", ""Songs"": [ { ""AlbumId"": ""b3ec4e5c"", ""SongName"": ""Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"", ""SongLength"": ""4:11"" }, { ""AlbumId"": ""b3ec4e5c"", ""SongName"": ""Love at First Feel"", ""SongLength"": ""3:10"" }, { ""AlbumId"": ""b3ec4e5c"", ""SongName"": ""Big Balls"", ""SongLength"": ""2:38"" } ] }, { ""Id"": ""67280fb8"", ""AlbumName"": ""Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace"", ""Artist"": ""Foo Fighters"", ""YearReleased"": 2007, ""Entered"": ""2012-03-16T00:13:12.2810521-10:00"", ""AlbumImageUrl"": ""http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41mtlesQPVL._SL500_AA280_.jpg"", ""AmazonUrl"": ""http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UFAURI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=westwindtechn-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000UFAURI"", ""Songs"": [ { ""AlbumId"": ""67280fb8"", ""SongName"": ""The Pretender"", ""SongLength"": ""4:29"" }, { ""AlbumId"": ""67280fb8"", ""SongName"": ""Let it Die"", ""SongLength"": ""4:05"" }, { ""AlbumId"": ""67280fb8"", ""SongName"": ""Erase/Replay"", ""SongLength"": ""4:13"" } ] }, { ""Id"": ""7b919432"", ""AlbumName"": ""End of the Silence"", ""Artist"": ""Henry Rollins Band"", ""YearReleased"": 1992, ""Entered"": ""2012-03-16T00:13:12.2800521-10:00"", ""AlbumImageUrl"": ""http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FO3rb1tuL._SL160_AA160_.jpg"", ""AmazonUrl"": ""http://www.amazon.com/End-Silence-Rollins-Band/dp/B0000040OX/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1302232195&sr=8-5"", ""Songs"": [ { ""AlbumId"": ""7b919432"", ""SongName"": ""Low Self Opinion"", ""SongLength"": ""5:24"" }, { ""AlbumId"": ""7b919432"", ""SongName"": ""Grip"", ""SongLength"": ""4:51"" } ] } ]"; dynamic albums = JsonValue.Parse(jsonString); foreach (dynamic album in albums) { Console.WriteLine(album.AlbumName + " (" + album.YearReleased.ToString() + ")"); foreach (dynamic song in album.Songs) { Console.WriteLine("\t" + song.SongName ); } } Console.WriteLine(albums[0].AlbumName); Console.WriteLine(albums[0].Songs[1].SongName);}   It's pretty sweet how easy it becomes to parse even complex JSON and then just run through the object using object syntax, yet without an explicit type in the mix. In fact it looks and feels a lot like if you were using JavaScript to parse through this data, doesn't it? • Objective-C As A First OOP Language?

    - by Daniel Scocco
I am just finishing the second semester of my CS degree. So far I learned C, all the fundamental algorithms and data structures (e.g., searching, sorting, linked lists, heaps, hash tables, trees, graphs, etc). Next year we'll start with OOP, using either Java or C++. Recently I got some ideas for some iPhone apps and got itchy to start working on them. However I heard some bad things about Objectice-C in the past, so I am wondering if learning it as my first OOP language could be a problem. Not to mention that I think it will be hard to find books/online courses that teach basic OOP concepts using Objective-C to illustrate the concepts (as opposed to books using Java or C++, which are plenty), so this could be another problem. In summary: should I start learning Objective-C and OOP concepts right now by my own, or wait one more semester until I learn Java/C++ at university and then jump into Objective-C? Update: For those interested in getting started with OOP via Objective-C I just found some nice tutorials inside Apple's Developer Library - http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/OOP_ObjC/Introduction/Introduction.html

  • Web application development over C++ development..

    - by learnerforever
Hi, I am CS undergrad and CS grad. In college I used to program in C/C++/java and have pretty much stuck to the same skill set in industry with 3 years experience. I like thinking, reading, applying logic etc, designing data structures, but I have little patience with debugging large C++ code. And having to deal with low level stuff like memory fault, memory corruption,compilation/linking issues. My confidence in programming is getting down due to this, but I like being in technical field. Does web application development like LAMP suit (Linux, apache, mysql, php),CSS,scripting (AMONG OTHER WEB DEVELOPMENT RELATED SKILLS) etc need lesser patience with debugging, and understanding of low level stuff, but your analysis/logical skills also get used? Also opportunities in web application development look more. Things like scalability, most of the stuff that Google does fascinates me, but for patience needed for dealing with C++ debugging. I make blunders while coding. How does the field look like outside C++? I am beginning to wonder if as a female, by moving to web application development, I can better manage work life balance. I have seen relatively lesser females in C++ than in Java/.net. Not very sure about web related stuff though. Also, what are the other hot technologies being used in web application development? lamp, css is something I know vaguely. Not in touch with keywords going on in this area. Please help!!.
