  • initializing structs using user-input information

    - by johnny boy
    I am trying to make a program that works with poker (texas holdem) starting hands; each hand has a value from 1 to 169, and i want to be able to input each card and whether they are suited or not, and have those values correspond to a series of structs. Here is the code so far, i cant seem to get it to work (im a beginning programmer). oh and im using visual studio 2005 by the way #include "stdafx.h" #include <iostream> int main() { using namespace std; struct FirstCard { struct SecondCard { int s; //suited int n; //non-suited }; SecondCard s14; SecondCard s13; SecondCard s12; SecondCard s11; SecondCard s10; SecondCard s9; SecondCard s8; SecondCard s7; SecondCard s6; SecondCard s5; SecondCard s4; SecondCard s3; SecondCard s2; }; FirstCard s14; //ace FirstCard s13; //king FirstCard s12; //queen FirstCard s11; //jack FirstCard s10; FirstCard s9; FirstCard s8; FirstCard s7; FirstCard s6; FirstCard s5; FirstCard s4; FirstCard s3; FirstCard s2; s14.s14.n = 169; // these are the values that each combination s13.s13.n = 168; // will evaluate to, would eventually have s12.s12.n = 167; // hand combinations all the way down to 1 s11.s11.n = 166; s14.s13.s = 165; s14.s13.s = 164; s10.s10.n = 163; //10, 10, nonsuited s14.s13.n = 162; s14.s11.s = 161; s13.s12.s = 160;// king, queen, suited s9.s9.n = 159; s14.s10.s = 158; s14.s12.n = 157; s13.s11.s = 156; s8.s8.n = 155; s12.s11.s = 154; s13.s10.s = 153; s14.s9.s = 152; s14.s11.n = 151; cout << "enter first card: " << endl; cin >> somthing?//no idea what to put here, but this would somehow //read out the user input (a number from 2 to 14) //and assign it to the corresponding struct cout << firstcard.secondcard.suited_or_not << endl; //this would change depending //on what the user inputs system("Pause"); }

  • SQLRally Nordic gets underway

    - by Rob Farley
PASS is becoming more international, which is great. The SQL Community has always been international – it’s not as if data is only generated in North America. And while it’s easy for organisations to have a North American focus, PASS is taking steps to become international. Regular readers will be aware that I’m one of three advisors to the PASS Board of Directors, with a focus on developing PASS as a more global organisation. With this in mind, it’s great that today is Day 1 of SQLRally Nordic, being hosted in in Sweden – not only a non-American country, but one that doesn’t have English as its major language. The event has been hosted by the amazing Johan Åhlén and Raoul Illyés, two guys who I met earlier this year, but the thing that amazes me is the incredible support that this event has from the SQL Community. It’s been sold out for a long time, and when you see the list of speakers, it’s not surprising. Some of the industry’s biggest names from Microsoft have turned up, including Mark Souza (who is also a PASS Director), Thomas Kejser and Tobias Thernström. Business Intelligence experts such as Jen Stirrup, Chris Webb, Peter Myers, Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are there, as are some of the most awarded SQL MVPs such as Itzik Ben-Gan, Aaron Bertrand and Kevin Kline. The sponsor list is also brilliant, with names such as HP, FusionIO, SQL Sentry, Quest and SolidQ complimented by Swedish companies like Cornerstone, Informator, B3IT and Addskills. As someone who is interested in PASS becoming global, I’m really excited to see this event happening, and I hope it’s a launch-pad into many other international events hosted by the SQL community. If you have the opportunity, thank Johan and Raoul for putting this event on, and the speakers and sponsors for helping support it. The noise from Twitter is that everything is going fantastically well, and everyone involved should be thoroughly congratulated! @rob_farley

  • Managing Social Relationships for the Enterprise – Part 1

    - by Michael Hylton
By Reggie Bradford, Senior Vice President, Oracle  Today, Mark Hurd, President of Oracle, Thomas Kurian, Executive Vice President of Oracle and I discussed the strategic importance of how social media is impacting the enterprise and how it is changing the way customers, prospects employees and investors interact with brands worldwide.  Oracle understands that the consumer is in control and as such, brands must evolve and change to meet growing needs. In addition, according to social media thought leader and Analyst from Altimeter Group, Jeremiah Owyang, companies now average 178 corporate-owned social media accounts. When Oracle added leading social marketing, listening analytics and development tools from Vitrue, Collective Intellect and Involver to its Oracle’s Cloud Services Suite we went beyond providing a single set of tools. We developed an entire framework to include a comprehensive social relationship management suite to help companies move beyond the social enterprise and achieve the social-enabled enterprise.  The fundamental shift from transaction to engagement means that enterprises need not only a social strategy, but should also ensure that the information and data received from social initiatives flow back to marketing, sales, support and service. Doing so enables companies to deliver a proactive and compelling experience and provides analytics to turn engagement into opportunity – and ultimately that opportunity into revenue.  On September 13, 2012, I am delighted to sit down with Jeremiah to further the discussion about how enterprises are addressing social media strategies and managing content.  In addition, we will be taking your questions after the webinar via Twitter (@Oracle, @ReggieBradford, @cfinn, @jowyang). Use #oracle and #socbiz to submit questions and follow the conversation. I look forward to speaking with you and answering your questions online.  For more information about becoming a social-enabled enterprise, visit www.oracle.com/social. And don’t miss the insights of other social business thought leaders at www.oracle.com/goto/socialbusiness.

  • A Year of Upheaval for Procurement Professionals-New Report & Webinar

    - by DanAshton
2013 will see significant changes in priorities and initiatives among procurement professionals as they balance the needs of their enterprises with efforts to add capabilities for long-term procurement success. In response, procurement managers will expand their organization’s spend influence via supplier relationship management, sourcing, and category management. These findings are part of the new report, “2013 Procurement Key Issues: Going Deeper and Broader to Deliver Borderless Procurement Services,” by the Hackett Group. The authors say that compared to similar studies over the last five years, 2013 is registering the greatest year-over-year changes in priorities for both procurement performance and capability issues. Three Important PrioritiesThe survey found that procurement professionals are focusing their attention in three key areas. Cost reduction. Controlling expenses is always a high priority, but with 90 percent of the respondents now placing this at the top of their performance concerns, the Hackett analysts say this “clearly shows that, for better or worse, cost reduction is king” in 2013. Technology innovation. Innovation has shot up significantly in the priority rankings and is now tied with spend influence for second among procurement professionals. Sixty-five percent of the survey participants said pursuing game-changing innovation and technology is a top procurement initiative. Managing supply risk. This area registered a sharp rise in importance because of its role in protecting profits, Hackett says. Supplier compliance with performance milestones and regulatory requirements is receiving particular attention, with an emphasis on efficient management of cross-functional workflows. “These processes create headaches for suppliers and buyers alike, and can detract from strategic value creation when participants are bogged down in processing paper and spreadsheets,” the report explains.  For more insights into the current state of the procurement industry, download the full report, “2013 Procurement Key Issues: Going Deeper and Broader to Deliver Borderless Procurement Services” and watch a Webcast featuring Global Procurement Advisory Practice Leader for The Hackett Group, Chis Sawchuk, and Managing Supervisor of Supply Chain Processes and Systems for Ameren, Chris Nelms.

  • Looking Under the Hood of ...

    - by rickramsey
copyright 2012 Rob Lang Fair is fair. Our last post featured a conversation with the beautiful and talented Eva Mendez, so today we're featuring something for those of you who prefer the other gender of our fair species. This dude has quite the hardware challenge ahead of him. He hasn't begun to find out what's really under that hood. Life is much easier for you and me, thanks to Jeff Wright and Suzanne Zorn. They wrote a wicked cool article about Oracle VM Server for SPARC. Here's a little bit about it... Looking Under the Hood of Networking in Oracle VM Server for x86 Oracle VM Server for SPARC lets you create logical networks out of physical Ethernet ports, bonded ports, VLAN segments, virtual MAC addresses (VNICs), and network channels. You can then assign channels (or "roles") to each logical network so that it handles the type of traffic you want it to. Greg King explains how you go about doing this, and how Oracle VM Server for SPARC implements the network infrastructure you configured. He also describes how the VM interacts with paravirtualized guest operating systems, hardware virtualized operating systems, and VLANs. Finally, he provides an example that shows you how it all looks from the VM Manager view, the logical view, and the command line view of Oracle VM Server for x86. More Resources for Oracle VM Server for x86 If you liked Greg and Suzanne's paper, you can ... • Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

    - by JuergenKress
Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity. For the Compensation pattern, we would like to address the following questions: Why is compensation important in relation to SOA? How is the topic of compensation linked with the topic of transactions? What are the challenges with regard to compensation... Read the full article in the Service Technology Magazine or at OTN. • Get mutually and non mutually existening Fields in same table in Two columns

    - by ranabra
This is a question similar to another question I posted here but is a little different. I am trying to get a list of all instances of mutual and non-mutual existing Users. What I mean is that the returned result from the query will return a list of users along with their co-worker. It is similar to the question here, but the difference is that non mutual users will be returned too and with out the "duplicity" mutually existing users return in the list (See image below in-order simplify it all). I took the original answer from Thomas (Thanx again Thomas) Select D1.u_username, U1.Permission, U1.Grade, D1.f_username, U2.Permission, U2.Gradefrom tblDynamicUserList As D1    Join tblDynamicUserList As D2        On D2.u_username = D1.f_username            And D2.f_username = D1.u_username    Join tblUsers As U1        On U1.u_username = D1.u_username    Join tblUsers As U2        On U2.u_username = D2.u_username and after some several trials I commented out 2 lines (Below). The returned result are exactly as described in the beginning of this question, but with the "duplicity" returned by mutually existing users in the table. How can I eliminate this duplicity? Select D1.u_username, U1.Permission, U1.Grade, D1.f_username, U2.Permission, U2.Gradefrom tblDynamicUserList As D1    Join tblDynamicUserList As D2        On D2.u_username = D1.f_username            /* And D2.f_username = D1.u_username */    Join tblUsers As U1        On U1.u_username = D1.u_username    Join tblUsers As U2        On U2.u_username = D2.u_username /* WHERE D1.U_userName < D1.f_username */ *Screenshot that hopefully helps explain it all. • 8 Reasons to Attend Oracle OpenWorld 2012

    - by kgee
Every year, the Oracle Hardware team recognizes the unique buzz that accompanies the season of OpenWorld. During the late nights kept possible by the grace of caffeine combined with the stress and eagerness for the event to run smoothly, we like to remind ourselves of why all our hard work is going to pay off. So, now that we've registered, here are some of our top reasons that we’re excited for Oracle OpenWorld 2012: The KeynotesJust to name a few...Larry Ellison, Mark Hurd, Thomas Kurian, John Fowler and many more are speaking live. We're expecting to walk away from the keynotes with a new frame of reference on a vast array of hot topics. NetworkingWhether it's through means of the OpenWorld Lounges, social media, or bars and cafes around Moscone Center, we'll be surrounded by people who are experts in the hardware field. Hardware SessionsThere are enough sessions to satisfy every Oracle hardware knowledge need. Hardware Experts in GeneralSo many experts that we wish we could be in two places at once sometimes. Pearl Jam & Kings of LeonRock out with these two legendary bands at the Oracle Appreciation Event! Oracle Music FestivalJoss Stone, Macy Gray, the Hives, and Jimmy Cliff will be welcome escapes at the end of each day at OpenWorld, and are just a couple more reasons these all nighters before OpenWorld are worth it. ORACLE TEAM USA and the America's Cup trophyAfter the sailors take on San Francisco Bay for Fleet Week, we’ll be soliciting them for autographs and taking pictures with them at OpenWorld. Location, Location, LocationThe Moscone Center is beautiful and in the best location in San Francisco. We know the OpenWorld hype will get to us sometimes, and it's nice to know that we have pretty much everything San Francisco has to offer at our finger tips. Why are you excited for #OOW? • Should the syntax for disabling code differ from that of normal comments?

    - by deltreme
For several reasons during development I sometimes comment out code. As I am chaotic and sometimes in a hurry, some of these make it to source control. I also use comments to clarify blocks of code. For instance: MyClass MyFunction() { (...) // return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; } Even though it "works" and alot of people do it this way, it annoys me that you cannot automatically distinguish commented-out code from "real" comments that clarify code: it adds noise when trying to read code you cannot search for commented-out code for for instance an on-commit hook in source control. Some languages support multiple single-line comment styles - for instance in PHP you can either use // or # for a single-line comment - and developers can agree on using one of these for commented-out code: # return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; Other languages - like C# which I am using today - have one style for single-line comments (right? I wish I was wrong). I have also seen examples of "commenting-out" code using compiler directives, which is great for large blocks of code, but a bit overkill for single lines as two new lines are required for the directive: #if compile_commented_out return null; // TODO: dummy for now #endif return obj; So as commenting-out code happens in every(?) language, shouldn't "disabled code" get its own syntax in language specifications? Are the pro's (separation of comments / disabled code, editors / source control acting on them) good enough and the cons ("shouldn't do commenting-out anyway", not a functional part of a language, potential IDE lag (thanks Thomas)) worth sacrificing? Edit I realise the example I used is silly; the dummy code could easily be removed as it is replaced by the actual code.

  • Friday Tips #6, Part 2

    - by Chris Kawalek
Here is a question about updating Oracle VM: Question: How can I perform Oracle VM 3 server updates from Oracle VM Manager? Answer by Gregory King, Principal Best Practices Consultant, Oracle VM Product Management: Server Update Manager is a built-in feature of the Oracle VM Manager. Basically, Server Update Manager automatically configures YUM updates on all the Oracle VM Servers, pointing each to our Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) update channel for Oracle VM. The servers periodically check with our Oracle YUM repository and notify the Oracle VM Manager that an update is available for each server. Actual server updates must be triggered by the Oracle VM administrator – they are not executed automatically. At this point, you can use the Oracle VM Manager to put a server into maintenance mode which live migrates all the running Oracle VM Guests to other Oracle VM Servers in the server pool. Once all the Oracle VM Guests have been migrated, the Oracle VM administrator can trigger the update on the server. The entire process is documented in the Installation and Upgrade Guide of Oracle VM Documentation so I won’t spend time detailing the steps. However, configuring the Server Update Manager is exceedingly simple. Simply navigate to the Tools and Resources tab in the Oracle VM Manager, select the link for Server Update Manager and ensure the following values are added to the text boxes as shown in the illustration below: YUM Base URL: http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleVM/OVM3/latest/x86_64 YUM GPG Key: file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle Every server in the pool will be automatically configured for YUM updates once you choose the Apply button. Many thanks to Greg and Rick for providing the answers to this week's questions. If you want to ask us something, hit up Twitter and use hashtag #AskOracleVirtualization. See you next week! -Chris

  • SQL Rally Nordic & Amsterdam slides & demos

    - by Davide Mauri
Last week I had the pleasure to speak at two GREAT conferences (as you can see from the wordcloud I’ve posted, here for Stockholm and here for Amsterdam. I used two different filtering techniques to produce the wordcloud, that’s why they look different. I’m playing a lot with R in these days…so I like to experiment different stuff). The workshop with my friend Thomas Kejser on “Data Warehouse Modeling – Making the Right Choices” and my sessions on “Automating DWH Patterns through Metadata” has been really appreciated by attendees, give the amount of good feedback I had on twitter and on some blog posts (Here and here). Of course many asked for slides & demos to download, so here you are! Automating DWH Patterns through Metadata – Stockholm http://sdrv.ms/1bcRAaW Automating DWH Patterns through Metadata – Amsterdam http://sdrv.ms/1cNDAex I’m still trying to understand if and how I can publicly post slides & demos of the workshop, so for that you have to wait a couple of days. I will post about it as soon as possible. Anyway, if you were in the workshop and would like to get the slide & demos ASAP, just send me an email, I’ll happily sent the protected link to my skydrive folder to you. Enjoy!
