• How can I monitor a website for malicious changes to the files

  I had an occasion recently where our website was compromised - a link farm was added to a couple of the pages on one occasion, and on another occasion, a large and nasty aspx file was put on the server. I won't mention the host's name (Hostway), but I was pretty annoyed that someone was able to do this. No, it wasn't a leaky password - around 10 sites hosted by HW with consecutive IP addresses got trashed. Anyway. What I need is a utility or service (preferably free) that takes a snapshot of my websites contents, and then regularly monitors the files (size and datestamp) for unauthorized changes or additions, and alerts me. I've used web services that monitor one file for changes, but I'm looking for something a bit more aggressive.

  I'm in a very beginning of the design phase of an application that will have to run in the following platforms/devices: Desktop: Windows, Linux & Mac Mobile: Android, iPhone/iPad & Windows Phone 7 Web: Silverlight I will use C# on Mono and I want to maximize code re-usability. Except for the desktop (I'll use WinForms/GTK#), my concern is related to many different GUI that I will face. What would be your approach? Obviously, the views will be different, but what about the controllers, data access, utility classes, etc. Is it really acceptable to share everything but the views?

• Application Composer Series: Where and When to use Groovy

  This brief post is really intended as more of a reference than an article. The table below highlights two things, firstly where you can add you own custom logic via groovy code (end column), and secondly (middle column) when you might use each particular feature. Obviously this applies only where Application Composer exists, namely Fusion CRM and Oracle Sales Cloud, and is based on current (release 8) functionality. Feature Most Common Use Case Groovy Field Triggers React to run-time data changes. Only fired when the field is changed and upon submit. Y Object Triggers To extend the standard processing logic for an object, based on record creation, updates and deletes. There is a split between these firing events, with some related to UI/ADF actions and others originating in the database. UI Trigger Points: After Create - fires when a new object record is created. Commonly used to set default values for fields. Before Modify - Fires when the end-user tries to modify a field value. Could be used for generic warnings or extra security logic. Before Invalidate - Fires on the parent object when one of its child object records is created, updated, or deleted. For building in relationship logic. Before Remove - Fires when an attempt is made to delete an object record. Can be used to create conditions that prevent deletes. Database Trigger Points: Before Insert in Database - Fires before a new object is inserted into the database. Can be used to ensure a dependent record exists or check for duplicates. After Insert in Database - Fires after a new object is inserted into the database. Could be used to create a complementary record. Before Update in Database -Fires before an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Update in Database - Fires after an existing object is modified in the database. Could be used to update a complementary record. Before Delete in Database - Fires before an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to check dependent record values. After Delete in Database - Fires after an existing object is deleted from the database. Could be used to remove dependent records. After Commit in Database - Fires after the change pending for the current object (insert, update, delete) is made permanent in the current transaction. Could be used when committed data that has passed all validation is required. After Changes Posted to Database - Fires after all changes have been posted to the database, but before they are permanently committed. Could be used to make additional changes that will be saved as part of the current transaction. Y Field Validation Displays a user entered error message based groovy logic validating the field value. The message is shown only when the validation logic returns false, and the logic is triggered only when tabbing out of the field on the user interface. Y Object Validation Commonly used where validation is needed across multiple related fields on the object. Triggered on the submit UI action. Y Object Workflows All Object Workflows are fired upon either record creation or update, along with the option of adding a custom groovy firing condition. Y Field Updates - change another field when a specified one changes. Intended as an easy way to set different run-time values (e.g. pick values for LOV's) plus the value field permits groovy logic entry. Y E-Mail Notification - sends an email notification to specified users/roles. Templates support using run-time value tokens and rich text. N Task Creation - for adding standard tasks for use in the worklist functionality. N Outbound Message - will create and send an XML payload of the related object SDO to a specified endpoint. N Business Process Flow - intended for approval using the seeded process, however can also trigger custom BPMN flows. N Global Functions Utility functions that can be called from any groovy code in Application Composer (across applications). Y Object Functions Utility functions that are local to the parent object. Usually triggered from within 'Buttons and Actions' definitions in Application Composer, although can be called from other code for that object (e.g. from a trigger). Y Add Custom Fields When adding custom fields there are a few places you can include groovy logic. Y Default Value - to add logic within setting the default value when new records are entered. Y Conditionally Updateable - to add logic to set the field to read-only or not. Y Conditionally Required - to add logic to set the field to required or not. Y Formula Field - Used to provide a new aggregate field that is entirely based on groovy logic and other field values. Y Simplified UI Layouts - Advanced Expressions Used for creating dynamic layouts for simplified UI pages where fields and regions show/hide based on run-time context values and logic. Also includes support for the depends-on feature as a trigger. • eGalax Touchscreen not working Jolicloud 1.2

  I have an eGalax touchscreen on an Acer Aspire One running Jolicloud 1.2 I have had success getting this touchscreen to work correctly on ubuntu 10.04NBR, 11.04 and Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy Linux, so I am pretty happy with how it SHOULD be done. However, I cannot get it to calibrate correctly or remember calibration settings. I have installed the eGalax utility (all available versions) and it does not recognize the screen. Xinput_calibrator works but the config cannot be made permanent. Problems I have identified: -Joli doesn't have an xorg.conf file and does not use xorg.conf.d for evdev configuration -Setting configs through Hal doesn't work anymore The best I can get is a poorly adjusted touchscreen with a reversed Y axis. Any help greatly appreciated

• Ubuntu boots into tty1 after driver downgrade

  Earlier today I downgraded the driver for my nvidia 240 GT from version 310 to version 304 using ubuntus "additional drivers" utility. After the install I rebooted but instead of opening unity and allowing me to login it booted into tty1 instead. After using the "startx" command I got the message, "nvidia: API mismatch: the nvidia kernel module has version 310.14, but this nvidia driver component has version 304.43." What can I do to solve this? Edit: Solved my own problem by purging all nvidia packaged and reinstalling my drivers.

• GRUB2 panic: "No such partition"

  I managed to install 10.04 on a system that already has 8.04 (separate partitions, of course). It also installed GRUB2 onto the MBR. After discovering that there is no menu.lst anymore, I edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom to point to where my other OS partitions are: menuentry "Ubuntu 8.04" { set root=(hd0,0) linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-28-generic initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-28-generic } menuentry "Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit" { set root=(hd0,2) chainloader (hd0,2)+1 } GRUB2 displays the menu with those entries but when I select any of them, it refuses to load them, saying "No such partition". I know the partitions are there, as 10.04's "Disk Utility" sees them without any problem. How do I get GRUB2 to recognize them?

• Ubuntu 12.04 not Locking Encrypted Hard Drive on Log Out

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4. I have two external hard drives. I encrypted both using Ubuntu's Disk Utility. When I use Nautilus to mount them, I'm asked for my decryption password. Regardless of whether I then click "Forget password immediately" or "Remember password until you logout", though, I find that Ubuntu does not lock the drives when I log out. Rather, when I log back in, they're still mounted. (To be clear, restarting the computer does unmount them so that they require the password on the next log in.) I'm concerned that these drives are remaining unprotected when I log out without restarting my computer. I would be grateful for help understanding whether this is a bug. Thank you!

• Is it safe to convert Windows file paths to Unix file paths with a simple replace?

  So for example say I had it so that all of my files will be transferred from a windows machine to a unix machine as such: C:\test\myFile.txt to {somewhere}/test/myFile.txt (drive letter is irrelevant at this point). Currently, our utility library that we wrote ourselves provides a method that does a simple replace of all back slashes with forward slashes: public String normalizePath(String path) { return path.replaceAll("\\", "/"); } Slashes are reserved and cannot be part of a file name, so the directory structure should be preserved. However, I'm not sure if there are other complications between windows and unix paths that I may need to worry about (eg: non-ascii names, etc)

• How does "rm" on a NTFS filesystem differs from Window's own implementation?

  I have an external USB disk with an NTFS filesystem on it. If I remove a file from Windows and I run one of the several "undelete" utilities (say, TestDisk) I can easily recover the file (because "it's still there but it's marked as deleted"). If I remove the file from Linux no utility (unless I use a deep-search signature-based one) can recover the file. Why? How is unlink implemented in Linux's NTFS file system code? It looks like it does not just "mark it as undeleted" but it wipes away some on-disk structure, is this the case?

• Printing in booklet fomat

  In the past I had a printer that had the booklet format option that would print the document two pages at a time ordered in a way that folding the whole printout would produce a booklet which could be stapled in the middle. My current printer does not support this feature. I would like to use some utility or script to convert an A4 pdf to an A5 booklet one. I found this page but I'm getting an error : pdfjam ERROR: can't find pdflatex! How do I get past this issue? Does anybody know of any other solution? I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 AMD64

• Simultaneously execute two queries on a shell script

  I have a shell script in which I have to execute two queries (on different databases), spool their results to text files and finally call a c++ program that processes the information on those text files. Something like this: sqlplus user1/pw1@database1 @query1.sql sqlplus user2/pw2@database2 @query2.sql ./process_db_output Both queries take some time to execute. One of them can take up to 10 minutes, while the other one is usually faster. What I want to do is execute them simultaneously and when both are done, call the processing utility. Any suggestion on how to do so?

• Sync active wallpaper/background between KDE and Gnome/Unity

  Is there solution using a utility or folder shortcuts that would keep the active desktop wallpaper/background the same in KDE and Gnome/Unity. (Changing the background in one desktop would also change the other desktop's wallpaper) I use both desktops because they both serve me better for different tasks, and i'd like to match LightDM login background for KDE as well. Regardless of that it would just be nice to accomplish this for personal consistency and unity. This is no heart breaker if it's not possible. It's just an extra couple of steps when I want to change my background. note: in KDE I disable ksplash

• Problem with .sh file

  I don't have any experience writing .sh files. I want to run the pvm2raw utility of this app from the Volume Library. • .NET Reflector is no longer free - how does everyone feel about this? [closed]

  The upcoming version of .NET Reflector, coming in March, will no longer have a free version. .NET Reflector started out as a free utility written by programmer Lutz Roeder and quickly became fairly indispensable to a lot of programmers. After about four years he sold it to RedGate software, who has maintained a free version ever since, as well as a "Pro" version about a year ago which adds capabilities and starts at $99/seat. The new version will no longer have a free version, will be $35 for the non-Pro versions, and the existing free versions will still work until the end of May. On the one hand it's annoying that the existing free versions will die and obviously I'd prefer there be a free version going forward. On the other hand I respect where RedGate is coming from and the cost for a license isn't prohibitively expensive. Plus it may encourage more frequent updates. EDIT: I originally said it was $35 for everyone but according to this FAQ there's still going to be a Pro version.

• 11.04 64 bit live install cd freezes immediately on boot

  I am trying to install 11.04 alpha to a free set of partitions to try it out but neither the regular graphic installer or the alternate installer work. The graphic one freezes when I try to boot the cd (or cd image on usb stick rather) with a distorted static picture of my regular desktop repeated four times. I have an nvidia 240 graphics card if that is any help in diagnosis. I think it is a matter of getting the cd image to use a low rez video mode but I have no idea how to force that. I have used both the iso's from the regular page and the daily page (for several days so far) and they all do the same thing. I have tried both the internal utility and unetbootin to set up the stick with the same results. The alternate installer seems to work up to the point of the software selection step and then throws a 'failed step' error part way through.

• API always returns JSONObject or JSONArray Best practices

  I'm making an API that will return data in JSON. I also wanted on client side to make an utility class to call this API. Something like : JSONObject sendGetRequest(Url url); JSONObject sendPostRequest(Url url, HashMap postData); However sometimes the API send back array of object [{id:1},{id:2}] I now got two choices (): Make the method test for JSONArray or JSONObject and send back an Object that I will have to cast in the caller Make a method that returns JSONObject and one for JSONArray (like sendGetRequestAndReturnAsJSONArray) Make the server always send Arrays even for one element Make the server always send Objects wrapping my Array I going for the two last methods since I think it would be a good thing to force the API to send consistent type of data. But what would be the best practice (if one exist). Always send arrays? or always send objects?

  I have a little problem with the icon in lwjgl, it doesn't work. I google about it, but i haven't found anything that works for me yet. "No se ha creado el icono" : "Se ha creado el icono"); The png file is a 128x128px with transparency. PNGDecoder is from the matthiasmann utility (de.matthiasmann.twl.utils). • Why won't USB 3.0 external hard drive run at USB 3.0 speeds?

  I recently purchased a PCI Express x1 USB 3.0 controller card (containing the NEC USB 3.0 controller) with the intent of using a USB 3.0 external hard drive with my Linux box. I installed the card in an empty PCIe slot on my motherboard, connected the card to a power cable, strung a USB 3.0 cable between one of the new ports and my external HDD, and connected the HDD to a wall socket for power. Booting the system, the drive works 100% as intended, with the one exception of throughput: rather than using SuperSpeed 4.8 Gbps connectivity, it seems to be falling back to High Speed 480 Mbps USB 2.0-style throughput. Disk Utility shows it as a 480 Mbps device, and running a couple Disk Utility and dd benchmarks confirms that the drive fails to exceed ~40 MB/s (the approximate limit of USB 2.0), despite it being an SSD capable of far more than that. When I connect my USB 3.0 HDD, dmesg shows this: [ 3923.280018] usb 3-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 where I would expect to find this: [ 3923.280018] usb 3-2: new SuperSpeed USB device using xhci_hcd and address 6 My system was running on kernel 2.6.35-25-generic at the time. Then, I stumbled upon this forum thread by an individual who found that a bug, which was present in kernels prior to 2.6.37-rc5, could be the culprit for this type of problem. Consequently, I installed the 2.6.37-generic mainline Ubuntu kernel to determine if the problem would go away. It didn't, so I tried 2.6.38-rc3-generic, and even the 2.6.38 nightly from 2010.02.01, to no avail. In short, I'm trying to determine why, with USB 3.0 support in the kernel, my USB 3.0 drive fails to run at full SuperSpeed throughput. See the comments under this question for additional details.
