• How to unsquash and mount arch linux live CD

  I am following this manual to install Arch Linux from within another Linux distro with the help of an Arch Linux live CD. Here is what I did: sudo mount -o loop Downloads/archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso arch_iso/ unsquashfs -d squashfs-root/ arch_iso/arch/x86_64/root-image.fs.sfs This results in a directory squashfs-root/ containing one file: root-image.fs I assume that this is not what I want. I want to see something that looks like a Linux root folder. If I follow these steps: "mount the file system" with mount -B /squashfs-root ${livecd_arch} and mount -t proc /proc ${livecd_arch}/proc, I get error messages like: mount: mount point /home/me/arch_root//proc does not exist What am I missing? Thanks!

• dvd burning software for ubuntu

  I've tried brasero which is the default software for burning data in ubuntu. But it seems to be malfunctioning. I thought it can only burn image files. And it cannot distinguish what file you are burning. I'm burning .avi files to be burned as a data. But I can only see the option burn as an image file. Do you know of any other software for ubuntu that can burn files as a data?

• How do I refresh Disk Utility?

  I do a lot of live system building, which eventually involves imaging a USB drive with the built binary image: dd if=binary.img of=/dev/sdX sync ...where /dev/sdX is a USB drive. As part of my workflow, I like to have Ubuntu's Disk Utility open so I can verify the drive letter and unmount anything that gets mounted automatically. I also use it to create extra partitions for persistence. The trouble is, after writing the image to the device — and even after the sync operation — Disk Utility doesn't show the new partition. It just shows free space. GParted sees it and fdisk sees it. Even after closing and opening Disk Utility, it still shows only free space. If I click "Safe Removal" and physically unplug and replug the USB drive, Disk Utility will then see the partition. Why do I need to remove and re-insert the drive for Disk Utility to see the partitions on it? Can I force Disk Utility to update its information without needing to do this? (using Disk Utility 3.0.2 under Ubuntu 11.10.)

• Windows 8 Restore Problems

  I created a Windows 8 system image backup on a separate drive before I installed Linux, and during the Linux installation process I accidentally wiped out Windows. I now want to restore my Windows 8 backup that I have on the separate drive. I created a repair USB stick and I followed the directions according to this article. After selecting the image on the hard drive, I get this error: "To restore this computer, Windows needs to format the hard drive." I don't know what this means! The drive partitions are different now then they were when I backup up, so I don't know if that matters. I re-installed Windows and I can restore my files from this backup, but I don't think this covers the registry, etc. I want a full restore. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or how to restore in a different way? Thanks!

• Windows XP Product Key for SP3 installation

  I have an somewhat older Notebook with an original Windows XP Professional License Sticker underneath. This Notebook was erased completely once and now I want to install a new Windows XP Professional System on it using the key that's on the sticker. But there seems to be one problem: I am using an Windows XP Professional SP3 image I got from my university (thanks to MSDNAA). But somehow I cannot use the license key on the sticker with this installation. It keeps saying that this key is invalid. What can I do? Is this because I try to install a Win XP Professional with SP3 directly? Do I need another image to install this?

• Getting Internet Explorer to Open Different Sets of Tabs Based on the Day of the Week

  If you have to use Internet Explorer for work and need to open a different set of work-specific tabs every day, is there a quick and easy way to do it instead of opening each one individually? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader bobSmith1432 is looking for a quick and easy way to open different daily sets of tabs in Internet Explorer for his work: When I open Internet Explorer on different days of the week, I want different tabs to be opened automatically. I have to run different reports for work each day of the week and it takes a lot of time to open the 5-10 tabs I use to run the reports. It would be a lot faster if, when I open Internet Explorer, the tabs I needed would automatically load and be ready. Is there a way to open 5-10 different tabs in Internet Explorer depending on the day of the week? Example: Monday – 6 Accounting Pages Tuesday – 7 Billing Pages Wednesday – 5 HR Pages Thursday – 10 Schedule Pages Friday – 8 Work Summary/Order Pages Is there an easier way for Bob to get all those tabs to load and be ready to go each day instead of opening them individually every time? The Answer SuperUser contributor Julian Knight has a simple, non-script solution for us: Rather than trying the brute force method, how about a work around? Open up each set of tabs either in different windows, or one set at a time, and save all tabs to bookmark folders. Put the folders on the bookmark toolbar for ease of access. Each day, right-click on the appropriate folder and click on ‘Open in tab group’ to open all the tabs. You could put all the day folders into a top-level folder to save space if you want, but at the expense of an extra click to get to them. If you really must go further, you need to write a program or script to drive Internet Explorer. The easiest way is probably writing a PowerShell script. • No dual cpu support for VirtualBox with a CPU that doesn't support multicore?

  With VMWare it works fine and I can run multiple cores on a VMWare image. With Sun VirtualBox I can only run 1 cpu on a image. Its annoying. Why does Sun Virtualbox not work the same as VMWare in this respect?? My CPU is: XEON 3.00GHz Intel 90nm 2MBCache QUAD CPU x14 Socket 604 mPGA Family 15 Model 4(04) Stepping 3 Revision 05 MMX SSE3 XD SIV.exe tells me: No virtual machine extensions x86 with 64-bit support NO IA64 support MPS but with NO MCP 2 physical processors, 2 cores, 4 logical processors

• Sharp flat panel scaling with Nvidia drivers

  I have a Samsung 226BW flat panel with a 1680x1050 native resolution. As my PC is rather dated (Athlon XP 2600+ and GeForce 6600 GT), I need to run more recent games (but still old) on a lower resolution. Unfortunately, scaling low resolutions to 1680x1050 results in a very blurry image (bilinear scaling). I have created a custom resolution of 840x525 in the Nvidia control panel. Technically, this resolutions allows perfect upscaling to 1680x1050 without the need for bilinear interpolation. Unfortunately, the Nvidia driver always seems to do bilinear scaling, again resulting in a blurry image. However, I seem to remember that I did obtain crisp images using this resolution in the past (before a Windows re-install). Maybe only some driver versions support integer upscaling without bilinear filtering? Or perhaps there are other solutions?

So I was quite surprised to learn that there was a significant amount of overlap in service references, in addition to being unable to discern which of the two was intended to be the primary service framework. Why does there seem to be a fair amount of redundancy in individual service handling between init.d and upstart? Is something else at play here that I'm missing? What is preventing upstart from completely taking over for init.d? Is there some functionality that certain daemons require which upstart does not yet have, which are preventing some services from converting? Or is it something else entirely?

• Create Custom Playlists in Windows Media Player 12

  A playlist is a group of songs or media files that are grouped together based on a theme. Today we’ll look at how to create your own custom playlists in Windows Media Player 12. Create Custom Playlists Open Windows Media Player and switch to the Library view. Click on the Play tab at the top right to reveal the List pane.   If you currently have songs listed on the List pane, you can remove them by clicking Clear list.   To add songs to your playlist, right-click on the song title, select Add to, and then click Play list. You can also drag and drop the song title right onto the play list area. Hold down the Control [Ctrl] key while clicking to select more than one track at a time.   Changing the Playlist Order You can click and drag each item in your playlist to move it up or down.   You can also right click on the title and select Move up or Move down, or to completely remove a track from your playlist. You have the option to shuffle your list by clicking the Options list icon and selecting Shuffle list from the dropdown list. By selecting Sort list by you can sort by Title, Artist, Album, Release date, and more. Saving and naming your playlist To save your playlist, click on the Save list button. You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your playlist in the text box. Click away when you are finished. Windows Media Player will display your most recent playlists in the Navigation panel. Simply select the playlist anytime you want to listen to it.   Conclusion Custom playlists are a great way to group your music by themes such as mood, genre, activity, season, and more. • deleting old unused images

  As we move on with our content-based websites, lots of images get dumped in our images folder, but we rarely come across self-committed monkyes that delete their files once they do not need it, which means, we end up with a huge list of images in one folder, and it is very tricky to clean it up. My question is (and i dont know if this is the right website to ask it), is there a tool that allows me to find out if an image has been requested by web in the last (n) months? my other general question is, how do you do it? how do you take control of your images folders? what policy do you enforce on developers to clean up? what measures do you take in order to decide what goes and what stays if you end up with an out-of-control situation? my suggestion was to rename the images folder, create a new one, copy the basic ones and wait for someone to complain about a broken image! :) i find this to be the most efficient.

  I cheated on a small site I was working on and used a site builder (Web Dwarf by Virtual Mechanics) to save time. I didn't realize it at the time, but this builder specifies the width, height and positions using CSS EMs. Is there an automated tool out there that will read through the CSS and convert each EM to a percentage so it will display correctly on wide screens as well? • virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. Thanks for any/all feedback.

I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

• Can I make Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx make the file I just opened be the top window automatically?

  When I open an image file in Gimp 2.8.4 in OSx Mountain Lion 10.8.4 via the File Open menu, it does not automatically make that image the top window, requiring that I then find that window via the Window menu. Very jarring UX! Is there a way to modify this behavior so that it behaves like most GUI applications and brings the document just opened to the fore? Is this a bug in Gimp 2.8? Interestingly in my Ubuntu 12.04 with Gimp 2.6.12 this is not a problem. Since I haven't used Gimp much at all until this month, I don't know if this is a new problem or not.

• Have a legitimate Windows 7 license and the Windows 7 key but don't have the DVD

  I just booted up my 'old' PC that's been lying around for the last two years. I have Windows 7 on it and I'm looking to format the drive and do a fresh install of W7. I have the key for Windows 7 in a text file. However I don't have the Windows 7 DVD or image. So is there any way of burning off a Windows 7 DVD considering that its the operating system I'm currently using? If not...well I have a W7 key, will this key work with any W7 DVD or is it particular to the W7 image that came with the key?
