• Entity Framework - Why does EF use LEFT OUTER JOIN's in a 1-to-1 relationship?

  Why does .NET Entity Framework produce SQL that uses a subquery and left outer join on a simple 1-to-1 relationship? I expected to see a simple join on the two tables. I'm using Devart Dotconnect for Oracle. Any ideas? Below is the output I see courtesy of the EFTracingProvider: SELECT 1 AS C1, "Join1".USER_ID1 AS USER_ID, ...   Hi all, I have three Windows Server 2003 with 2 GB RAM. Server1 tomcat 5.5.25 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_11-b03 Server2 tomcat 5.5.25 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_14-b08 Server3 tomcat 6.0.18 jvm version SUN 1.6.0_14-b08 For the three servers JVM parameters are: -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dcatalina.base=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25 -Dcatalina.home=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25 -Djava.endorsed.dirs=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25\common\endorsed -Djava.io.tmpdir=C:\Apache Group\apache-tomcat-5.5.25\temp vfprintf -Xms512m -Xmx1024m For some months everithing worked fine. Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesn't start anymore, with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. • How to export more than 1MB in XML format using sqlcmd and without an input file?

  Hello, In SQL Server 2008, I want to export the result of a stored procedure to a file using sqlcmd utility. Now the end of my stored procedure is a select statement with a "for xml path.." clause at the end. I read on BOL that if I don't want my output truncated when reaching 1MB file size, I have to use this :XML ON command, but it should be placed on its own line, before calling the stored procedure. Does any of you experts know if it is possible to do that without specifying an input file for sqlcmd? (I'm calling sqlcmd like this: exec master..xp_cmdshell 'sqlcmd -Q"exec storedProcedureName @param1=value1, @param2=value2" -o c:\exportResults.xml -h-1 -E', but "storedProcedureName" and its parameters can change, which would mean 1 input file per passed parameters to sqlcmd) Also, it seems that I can't use bcp instead of sqlcmd because my stored procedure is creating a temporary table and performing DML statements on it? • Are stack based arrays possible in C#?

  Let's say, hypothetically (read: I don't think I actually need this, but I am curious as the idea popped into my head), one wanted an array of memory set aside locally on the stack, not on the heap. For instance, something like this: private void someFunction() { int[20] stackArray; //C style; I know the size and it's set in stone } I'm guessing the answer is no. All I've been able to find is heap based arrays. If someone were to need this, would there be any workarounds? Is there any way to set aside a certain amount of sequential memory in a "value type" way? Or are structs with named parameters the only way (like the way the Matrix struct in XNA has 16 named parameters (M11-M44))?

• Cannot format first column in WxPython's ListCtrl

  If I set the format of the first column in a ListCtrl to align centre (or align right) nothing happens. It works for the other columns. This only happens on Windows - I have tested it on Linux and it works fine. Does anyone know if there is a work-round or other solution? • In a multithreaded app, would a multi-core or multiprocessor arrangement be better?

  I've read a lot on this topic already both here (e.g., stackoverflow.com/questions/1713554/threads-processes-vs-multithreading-multi-core-multiprocessor-how-they-are or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/680684/multi-cpu-multi-core-and-hyper-thread) and elsewhere (e.g., ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/rmmt-l2-cache.html or software.intel.com/en-us/articles/multi-core-introduction/), but I still am not sure about a couple things that seem very straightforward. So I thought I'd just ask. (1) Is a multi-core processor in which each core has dedicated cache effectively the same as a multiprocessor system (balanced of course for processor speed, cache size, and so on)? (2) Let's say I have some images to analyze (i.e., computer vision), and I have these images loaded into RAM. My app spawns a thread for each image that needs to be analyzed. Will this app on a shared cache multi-core processor run slower than on a dedicated cache multi-core processor, and would the latter run at the same speed as on an equivalent single-core multiprocessor machine?   I have a document with dynamic image and dynamic text and would like the text around the image. The image is right aligned on the landscape page.   I find the algorithm description in AIMA (Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach) is not correct at all. What does 'necessary' mean? What is the memory limit? The queue size or processed nodes? • Hiding flash component scrollbars using object/param syntax

  Hi all, I'm not sure if this is possible (complete non-flash developer speaking), but we have a 3rd party component that we want to only show a certain topleft hand portion of. I've tried limiting the size of the HTML object container as: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="415" data="<url>"> <param name="movie" value="<url>" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="flashvars" value="<vars>" /> </object> So limiting it to 600x415, but this causes horizontal and vertical scrollbars as part of the flash component to appear. Is there any standard way to override this behaviour? Thanks.

  I'm trying to use Shark to determine which method(s) are taking the most time in my iPhone app. After sampling, I get this: Clicking the "!" button yields: Shark was unable to find symbol information for this address range. Typically this happens because the application was compiled without symbols or they have been subsequently stripped away. In Xcode, make sure the "Generate Debug Symbols" checkbox is selected (passes the -g flag to the compiler). Note that this does not affect code optimization, and does not typically alter performance significantly. However, the extra symbol information does consume significantly more space and may bloat the size of the executable. But I AM using the Debug option, and I am running on my Device. And Generate Debug Symbols IS checked. So what's wrong?

  Without paging function, i can loop through the gridview by using var sum = 0; var gridViewCtlId = '<%=timesheetView.ClientID%>'; var grid = document.getElementById(gridViewCtlId); var gridLength = grid.rows.length; so with gridLength i can loop through the gridview to sum all rows. However, when I use paging event of gridview, i use the page size to loop through all rows, but it occurs errors because the last page may not have enough rows.   Hi! I'm using ASANT to run a xml file which points to a NARS.jar file. (i do not have the project file of the NARS.jar) I'm getting "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. I used VisualVM to look at the heap while running the NARS.jar, and it says that it max uses 50 MB of the heapspace. I've set the initial and max size of heapspace to 512 MB. Does anyone have an ide of what could be wrong? I got 1 GB physical Memory and created a 5 GB pagefile (for test purpose). Thanks in advance.

  My concern is performance, is there a reason to to send the client XML instead of valid HTML? Like most things, I am sure it is application dependent. My specific situation is where there is substantial content being inserted into the web page that has been pulled from a database. What are the advantages of either approach? Is the size of the content even a concern? Or, in the case of using XML, will the time for the Javascript to process the XML into HTML counterbalance the extra time that would have been required to send HTML to start with? Thanks, Jeff

  I am trying to develop a map editor in java. My map window receives as a constructor a Map object. From that map object i am able to retrieve the Grid and every item in the grid along with other getters and setters. The problem is that even though the Mapping extends JComponent, when I place it in a panel it is not painted. I have overridden the paint method to satisfy my needs. • Objective-C I can access self.view but not self.view.frame

  I can access and show self.view and see the frame in the log but when I try to access self.view.frame I get null.   I've just started using google charts and want to use it in a small project I'm workin on but I've bumped into a problem. The thing is I want the charts rather big at a static size and look good but I'm generating the charts dynamically with php. Now the problem is that I can't get it to scale properly in width but height is perfectly fine. Here's an example chart I've generated: Parameters: cht=bvo&chs=400x400 chd=t:1,4,1 chxr=2,0,4,1 chds=0,4 chco=4d89f9 chxt=x,x,y,y chxl=0:|3|7|26|1:|Correct+answers|3:|People You see how the chart fills the 400px of height but not the width. I've searched and look through the api but I can't get it right.

I am currently using the wrapper ( C# syntax is provided , but it is a call from a different language ) zdiff( string ref str1, string ref str2, int range , int trim ) it calls inside str1 = GetHiDiff(@str1,1,trim) str2 = GetHiDiff(@str1,2,trim) where function GetHiDiff(s:pchar; sIndex:integer; wtrim:integer): pchar; stdcall; What it does it returns a left fragment html of str1 and a right html fragment of str2 with diffs highlighted as strings are passed by reference. Range parameter determines the size of html fragment. Not sure what trim 0 does.

  How does Windows decide which icon format to display when showing an exe's icon in Windows Explorer? Problem: When we look at our icon file and exe with embedded icon file in various Windows Explorer file views, the icon file is displayed in a higher quality mode than the icon displayed for our executable even though the icon in our executable contains the exact same icon. Our exe's icon has jaggier edges which leads me to believe that Windows Explorer may be trying to upsize a lower resolution icon rather than picking an icon appropriate for the actual display size. In a multi-format icon file, is there a specific order we should use for positioning each icon format? For example, we have an icon file with icons in the following formats: - 16x16 - 32x32 - 48x48 - 64x64 - 128x128 - 256x256 We are testing the appearance of our exe's icon using Windows Explorer under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Web Services: more frequent "small" calls, or less frequent "big" calls

  In general, is it better to have a web application make lots of calls to a web service getting smaller chunks of data back, or to have the web app make fewer calls and get larger chunks of data? In particular, I'm building a Silverlight app that needs to get large amounts of data back from the server in response to a query created by a user. Each query could return anywhere from a few hundred records to a few thousand. Each record has around thirty fields of mostly decimal-type data. I've run into the situation before where the payload size of the response exceeded the maximum allowed by the service. I'm wondering whether it's better (more efficient for the server/client/web service) to cut this payload vertically--getting all values for a single field with each call--or horizontally--getting batches of complete records with each call. Or does it matter?

  Hi. I am writting Silverlight client-server application. Server part is WinForm application an client part is Silverlight. I use TCP connction. I use sockets for sending and receiving information. But now I need to send a file, size of which may be greater then 1 Mb, so I can't use socets to send that file as bite stream. I wont to send that file form server and receive it on client Silverlight application. How can I do that? Thanks.
