F#, Linux and makefiles

I intend to distribute an F# program as both binary and source so the user has the option of recompiling it if desired. On Windows, I understand how to do this: provide .fsproj and .sln files, which both Visual Studio and MSBuild can understand. On Linux, the traditional solution for C programs is a makefile. This depends on gcc being directly available, which it always is. The F# compiler can be installed on Linux and works under Mono, so that's fine so far. However, as far as I can tell, it doesn't create a scenario where fsc runs the compiler, instead the command is mono ...path.../fsc.exe. This is also fine, except I don't know what the path is going to be. So the full command to run the compiler in my case could be mono ~/FSharp-2.0.0.0/bin/fsc.exe types.fs tptp.fs main.fs -r FSharp.PowerPack.dll except that I'm not sure where fsc.exe will actually be located on the user's machine. Is there a way to find that out within a makefile, or would it be better to fall back on just explaining the above in the documentation and relying on the user to modify the command according to his setup?

GUI for generating XML

Hello. Does anybody know of GUIs for generating XMLs? This means the user will not be presented with an IDE with support for XML for him to type XML codes. This would be helpful for non-technical people using the system. I know this sounds easy, given many libraries that can help in generating XMLs. The issue here is that the schema is really that flexible rather than being straightforward like representing books in a library with their properties. Imagine HTML, where we can create font tags inside a body, a table, a div, or nested even within itself. The solution is a WYSIWYG application that allows user to generate html codes (XML). However, that is good for XML applied in webpages since they involve visual aspect and design. My application of XML would focus on representing some conceptual and computational definitions, much like sql-like syntax, but more than that. I'm actually after the approach or previous works done or tried, although having a library/working framework for that would be better. Btw, I'm using Java for this project. Currently, I'm just thinking of presenting element tags where user will be able to drag and drop them and nest them with each other. And perhaps, assist them through a forms in inputing values for XML attributes. I'm still hoping if there are better ideas from the community. Thank you.

Django: Serving Media Behind Custom URL

How can I accomplished what I get above while still making nginx/apache serve the media? Is this something that should be done at the webserver level? How do I fix this installation problem with multicore Solr on Ubuntu 10.04?

Following instructions from the two sites below, I've installed Tomcat 6 and Solr 1.4. http://gist.github.com/204638 https://wiki.fourkitchens.com/display/TECH/Solr+1.4+on+Ubuntu+9.10+and+CentOS+5 I have successfully got it up and running on a server running 9.04 with multicore support, but on the 10.04 I can't seem to get it to work. i18n redirection breaks my tests ....

I have a big application covered by more than a thousand tests via rspec. We just made the choice to redirect any page like : / /foo /foo/4/bar/34 ... TO : /en /en/foo /fr/foo/4/bar/34 .... It's breaking a lot of my tests, ex : it "should return 404" do Video.should_receive(:failed_encodings).and_return([]) get :last_failed_encoding response.status.should == "404 Not Found" end To fix this test, I should do : get :last_failed_encoding, :locale => "en" But ... seriously I don't want to fix all my test one by one ... cocoa hello world screensaver

I have been studying NSView and as such I thought I would give a shot at a screen saver. I have been able to display and image in an NSView but I can't seen to modify this example code to display a simple picture in ScreenSaverView. http://www.mactech.com/articles/mactech/Vol.20/20.06/ScreenSaversInCocoa/ BTW great tutorial that works with Snow Leopard. I would think to simply display an image I would need something that looked like this... How to access "Custom" or non-System TFS workitem fields using PowerShell?

When using PowerShell to extract information from TFS, I find that I can get at the standard fields but not "Custom" fields. I'm not sure custom is the correct term, but for example if I look at the Process Editor in VS2008 and edit the Work Item type, there are fields such as listed below, with Name, Type and RefName: Title String System.Title State String System.State Rev Integer System.Rev Changed By String System.ChangedBy I can access these with Get-TfsItemHistory: Get-TfsItemHistory "$/path" -Version "D01/12/10~" -R | Select -exp WorkItems | Format-Table Title, State, Rev, ChangedBy -Auto So far so good. However, there are also some other fields in the WorkItem type, which I'm calling "Custom" or non-System fields, e.g.: Activated By String Microsoft.VSTS.Common.ActivatedBy Resolved By String Microsoft.VSTS.Common.ResolvedBy And the following command does not retrieve the data, just spaces. Get-TfsItemHistory "$/path" -Version "D01/12/10~" -R | Select -exp WorkItems | Format-Table ActivatedBy, ResolvedBy -Auto I've also tried the names in quotes, the fully qualified refname, but no luck. How do you access these "non-System" fields? Does GetSystemInfo (on Windows) always return the number of logical processors?

Reading up on this, and specifically reading the Microsoft docs, it looks like it should be returning the number of PHYSICAL processors, and that you should use GetLogicalProcessorInformation to figure out how many LOGICAL processors you have. Here's the doc I found on the SYSTEM_INFO structure: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724958(v=VS.85).aspx And here's the doc on GetLogicalProcessorInformation: (spaces added to get through spam filter) http:// msdn.microsoft.com/ en-us/ library/ ms683194.aspx Reading up on it further though, in most of the discussions I've found on this topic, developers say to that GetSystemInfo (and the SYSTEM_INFO structure) report the number of LOGICAL processors. When I search again, I find that MS did release some info on this (and a hot fix), here (spaces added to get through spam filter): http:// support. microsoft.com/ kb/936235 Reading that, it sounds like on Xp, pre-service Pack 3, GetSystemInfo reports the number of LOGICAL processors in the SYSTEM_INFO structure. It also reads to me that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, GetSystemInfo should be reporting the number of PHYSICAL processors (different to Windows XP pre-service Pack 3). Does anyone know what it actually does? Does GetSystemInfo really report the number of physical processors (on the same computer) differently, depending on which OS it's running on?

Encryption puzzle / How to create a ProxyStub for a Remote Assistance ticket

I am trying to create a ticket for Remote Assistance. Part of that requires creating a PassStub parameter. As of the documenation: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc240115(PROT.10).aspx PassStub: The encrypted novice computer's password string. When the Remote Assistance Connection String is sent as a file over e-mail, to provide additional security, a password is used.<16 In part 16 they detail how to create as PassStub. In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, when a password is used, it is encrypted using PROV_RSA_FULL predefined Cryptographic provider with MD5 hashing and CALG_RC4, the RC4 stream encryption algorithm. As PassStub looks like this in the file: PassStub="LK#6Lh*gCmNDpj" If you want to generate one yourself run msra.exe in Vista or run the Remote Assistance tool in WinXP. The documentation says this stub is the result of the function CryptEncrypt with the key derived from the password and encrypted with the session id (Those are also in the ticket file). The problem is that CryptEncrypt produces a binary output way larger then the 15 byte PassStub. Also the PassStub isn't encoding in any way I've seen before. Some interesting things about the PassStub encoding. After doing statistical analysis the 3rd char is always a one of: !#$&()+-=@^. Only symbols seen everywhere are: *_ . Otherwise the valid characters are 0-9 a-z A-Z. There are a total of 75 valid characters and they are always 15 bytes. Running msra.exe with the same password always generates a different PassStub, indicating that it is not a direct hash but includes the rasessionid as they say. Some other ideas I've had is that it is not the direct result of CryptEncrypt, but a result of the rasessionid in the MD5 hash. In MS-RA (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc240013(PROT.10).aspx). The "PassStub Novice" is simply hex encoded, and looks to be the right length. The problem is I have no idea how to go from any hash to way the ProxyStub looks like.

LDAP Query for OU's

Is there a good way of automatically generating javascript client code from server side python

I basically want to be able to: Write a few functions in python (with the minimum amount of extra meta data) Turn these functions into a web service (with the minimum of effort / boiler plate) Automatically generate some javascript functions / objects for rpc (this should prevent me from doing as many stupid things as possible like mistyping method names, forgetting the names of methods, passing the wrong number of arguments) Example python: def hello_world(): return "Hello world" javascript: ...  <script src="http://myurl.com/webservice/client_side_javascript"> </script> ... <script> $('#button').click(function () { hello_world(function (data){ $('#label').text(data))) } </script> A bit of research has shown me some approaches that come close to this: Automatic generation of json-rpc services from functions with a little boiler plate code in python and then using jquery and json to do the calls (still easy to make mistakes with method names - still need to be aware of urls when calling, very irritating to write these calls yourself in the firebug shell) Using a library like soaplib to generate wsdl from python (by adding copious type information). And then somehow convert this into javascript (not sure if there is even a library to do this) But are there any approaches closer to what I want?

I have spent some time now learning RESHAPE2 and plyr but I still do not get it. This time I have a problem with (a) subtotals and (b) passing different aggregate functions . P.S: I have seen some examples using reshape. Will you recommend to use it instead of reshape2 (which seems not to include the functionalities of two functions).

Having vCam on custom classes instead of the root class.

Maybe some of you guys know bout vCam from http://bryanheisey.com/blog/?page_id=22 I'm trying to have the script running on a custom classes instead of a MovieClip in the library. But after some trying I fail so I stick back to having the MC in the library and load the MC from the project root action-script files. Now it works fine if I run the MC on the root as files, but for more organizing purposes on my action-script files, I was thinking of calling it from a custom classes(where I can control the vCam), then call the custom classes from the root action-script files. But seems like it won't work other than the root action-script files. I'm not sure whether I'm missing any codes between the two custom classes, or its not coded to run that way. If it's not, then its fine too just that I want the things more organize. Or if you have any idea how to 'by-pass' this, please do tell me so. Idiomatic default sort using WCF RIA, Entity Framework 4, Silverlight 4?

MVVM-Light EventToCommand Behavior for CheckBox Checked/Unchecked in Silverlight

I would like to handle the Checked and Unchecked events of a Checkbox control and execute a command in my ViewModel. I have a workaround where I have separate triggers (and commands) for the Checked and Unchecked and use a RelayCommand instead of RelayCommand<bool>. If a custom controller factory is in use, make sure that it creates a new instance of the controller for each request.

WPF DataBinding to standard CLR properties in code-behind

Hi everyone, Just learning WPF databinding and have a gap in my understanding. I've seen a few similar questions on StackOverflow, but I'm still struggling in determining what I have done wrong. I have a simple Person class with a Firstname and Surname property (standard CLR properties). I also have a standard CLR property on my Window class that exposes an instance of Person. I've then got some XAML, with two methods of binding. The first works, the second doesn't. Can anybody help me to understand why the second method fails? Here's a pretty simple idea, in this pastebin I've posted some pair of numbers. These represent Nodes of a directed graph. The input to stdin will be of the form, (they'll be numbers, i'll be using an example here) c d q r a b b c d e p q so x y means x is connected to y (not viceversa) There are 2 paths in that example. a->b->c->d->e and p->q->r. You need to print all the unique paths from that graph The output should be of the format a->b->c->d->e p->q->r Notes You can assume the numbers are chosen such that one path doesn't intersect the other (one node belongs to one path) The pairs are in random order. They are more than 1 paths, they can be of different lengths. All numbers are less than 1000. If you need more details, please leave a comment. I'll amend as required. I have a problem creating authentication part for my application. Below is the simplified version of my controllers. The idea is that the MY_controller checks if session with user data exists. If it doesn’t, then redirects to the index page where you have to log in. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.” It seems like the redirect() is being looped. I looked at a few other examples of user auth and they were build using similar technique.

Listing serial (COM) ports on Windows?

Hello, I'm looking for a robust way to list the available serial (COM) ports on a Windows machine. There's this post about using WMI, but I would like something less .NET specific - I want to get the list of ports in a Python or a C++ program, without .NET. I currently know of two other approaches: Reading the information in the HARDWARE\\DEVICEMAP\\SERIALCOMM registry key. This looks like a great option, but is it robust? I can't find a guarantee online or in MSDN that this registry cell indeed always holds the full list of available ports. Tryint to call CreateFile on COMN with N a number from 1 to something. This isn't good enough, because some COM ports aren't named COMN. For example, some virtual COM ports created are named CSNA0, CSNB0, and so on, so I wouldn't rely on this method. Any other methods/ideas/experience to share? How to know if all the Thread Pool's thread are already done with its tasks?

I have this application that will recurse all folders in a given directory and look for PDF. If a PDF file is found, the application will count its pages using ITextSharp. I did this by using a thread to recursively scan all the folders for pdf, then if then PDF is found, this will be queued to the thread pool. The code looks like this: //spawn a thread to handle the processing of pdf on each folder. var th = new Thread(() => { pdfDirectories = Directory.GetDirectories(pdfPath); processDir(pdfDirectories); }); th.Start(); private void processDir(string[] dirs) { foreach (var dir in dirs) { pdfFiles = Directory.GetFiles(dir, "*.pdf"); processFiles(pdfFiles); string[] newdir = Directory.GetDirectories(dir); processDir(newdir); } } private void processFiles(string[] files) { foreach (var pdf in files) { ThreadPoolHelper.QueueUserWorkItem( new { path = pdf }, (data) => { processPDF(data.path); } ); } } My problem is, how do i know that the thread pool's thread has finished processing all the queued items so i can tell the user that the application is done with its intended task?
