  I think Nautilus is so slow, and I'd like to move to PCmanFM, but didn't find any good tips how to do this in Ubuntu 12.10. • Review before or after code commit, which is better?

  Traditionally we performed code review before commit, I had an argument with my colleague today, who preferred code review after commit. First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. • Do wordpress websites get indexed quicker by SE than a regular website?

  I registered a couple of domains with the names of categories of products we sell. I then installed wordpress in one of those domains and played around with it for a bit, and left it alone for about a month. There was a link on my regular website to that secondary website and that website was also registered in google's webmaster tools, but that's that. I then searched on google last week for that product category, and to my surprise, that secondary website showed up in the 2nd or 3rd page on google. Now my question is: Do search engines index wordpress websites quicker? I had given up on using wordpress for that website, since it's so simple, but should i use it, would it give me better results? Thanks in advance for the help, if the question is not deleted.

• BUILD 2013 &ndash; Summary

While I Know that some people were disappointed that Microsoft didn't Say more about the XBox One, I was pleased with the information we got for developing Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone applications. Add to that the ability to pick the brains of MVPs and product team members was really worth the price of admission. It is going to take a while to digest all of the material and weeks to go through all the videos. In the end there is a lot of information that is going to improve my projects.  I look forward to what Microsoft has coming next seeing every one at the next BUILD. • Should I have link rel=next & prev on URLs which have query variables?

  For example, I have link rel prev & next set up on these pages of products: site.com?page=2 site.com?page=3 (this is my preferred structure by the way and I'm trying to get all the ugly URLs which are littered with query variables deindexed as they are causing duplicate content). So the above URLs are fine but once a filter to narrow product results is selected, like "price", the URL shows like this: site.com?price[1000-1499]=on site.com?page=2&price[1000-1499]=on As of right now, I am having the link rel prev & next dynamically added to the header of these pages but since I am working on getting these query variable URLs pages deindexed, I am wondering if I should get rid of it on these pages? Any thoughts?

• NPOT texture and video memory usage

  I read in this QA that NPOT will take memory as much as next POT sized texture. It means it doesn't give any benefit than POT texture with proper management. (maybe even worse because NPOT should be slower!) Is this true? Does NPOT texture take and waste same memory like POT texture? I am considering NPOT texture for post-processing, so if it doesn't give memory space benefit, using of NPOT texture is meaningless to me. Maybe answer can be different for each platforms. I am targeting mobile devices. Such as iPhone or Androids. Does NPOT texture takes same amount of memory on mobile GPUs?

I want to make sure I am giving a good picture of the overall health of the system, and not just narrowing in on a single measurement. So my question is: When developing software, what metrics would you provide to your stakeholders to indicate a system that is healthy and running well? (if it is not running well, that should also be evident! Not trying to hide/obscure any problems.)

  Could you, pls, help me with my wireless card Atheros AR9285 on Ubuntu 10.12.. I've already went through all possible advices and still cannot start my wireless card. I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where Wifi've already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 10.12. I'm not able get it work. • Quality Assurance tools discrepancies

  It is a bit ironic, yesterday I answered a question related to this topic that was marked to be good and today I'm the one who asks. These are my thoughts and a question: Also let's agree on the terms: QA is a set of activities that defines and implements processes during SW development. The common tool is the process audit. However, my colleague at work agrees with the opinion that reviews and inspections are also quality assurance tools, although most sources classify them as quality control. I would say both sides are partially right: during inspections, we evaluate a physical product (clearly QC) but we see it as a white box so we can check its compliance with set processes (QA). Do you think it is the reason of the dichotomy among the authors? I know it is more like an academic question but it deserves the answer :)

For the first time ever, I actually want to contribute to open source because I believe in this tech.   I have Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.Also I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a separate drive.I want to install Adobe Master Collection CS6 on Ubuntu 12.10.I tried using wine but what wine does is,it just installs the software & doesn't allow me to use it.While I click on any Adobe product say Adobe Photoshop & hit enter to run it it pops out an error message. How should I tackle this?Is there any other software apart from virtual Machine Ware or Wine to install & successfully run Adobe Master Collection CS6 in Ubuntu 12.10?

• Places to find free software projects who need developers/project managers?

  While I have plenty of project management "booksmarts" and a handful of PM experience, I don't seem to have enough experience to get the sort of job I want. Since "I read another PM book/blog today" doesn't really count, I was thinking I could find some free/open source software (FOSS) projects who are looking for/hiring project managers or developers and see if there was anything I could volunteer for. Does anyone know of any FOSS employment sites where I might be able to find such projects? Something similar to careers.stackoverflow.com. I know I could just go to sourceforge/freshmeat and look around, but I was hoping to find some site that fills this need (and if any such sites exist, my google-fu is apparently VERY weak at finding them).

During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! • Why Java as a First Language?

  Why is Java so popular as a first language to teach beginners? To me it seems like a terrible choice: It's statically typed. Static typing isn't useful unless you care a lot about either performance or scaling to large projects. It requires tons of boilerplate to get the simplest code up and running. Try explaining "Hello, world" to someone who's never programmed before. It only handles the middle levels of abstraction well and is single-paradigm, thus leaving out a lot of important concepts. You can't program at a very low level (pointers, manual memory management) or a very high level, (metaprogramming, macros) in it. In general, Java's biggest strength (i.e. the reason people use it despite the shortcomings of the language per se) is its libraries and tool support, which is probably the least important attribute for a beginner language. In fact, while useful in the real world these may negatives from a pedagogical perspective as they can discourage learning to write code from scratch.

• When should code favour optimization over readability and ease-of-use?

  I am in the process of designing a small library, where one of my design goals is that the API should be as close to the domain language as possible. While working on the design, I've noticed that there are some cases in the code where a more intuitive, readable attribute/method call requires some functionally unnecessary encapsulation. Since the final product will not necessarily require high performance, I am unconcerned about making the decision to favour ease-of-use in my current project over the most efficient implementation of the code in question. I know not to assume readability and ease-of-use are paramount in all expected use-cases, such as when performance is required. I would like to know if there are more general reasons that argue for a design preferring more efficient implementations—even if only marginally so?

  My company has recently switched to an Agile way of working and as a part of it we've started using SCRUM. While I'm very comfortable with it and feel that this way is superior to a traditional one, some of my teammates don't share the same opinion. In fact they are very skeptical about "all that agile stuff", and don't take it seriously. As an example, one of the teammates is always late on the meetings, and doesn't really care about it. The management IMO tries not to notice this (maybe because it's new, and it takes time for the people to get used to it). My question is, how to address this issue while not raising a conflict inside the team?
