• specify temp folder for msi extracted files used for installation

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • Proxy Appliance

  I'm looking for a way to set-up a web proxy at home. Hopefully there's a solution I can use to do this. Alternatively, do you have any ideas for setting up one at home using a proxy with an auto updating list? UPDATE - AutoUpdating list so the new sites are categorized and downloaded and the filtering is done by category instead of per site e.g. peerblock works this way Appliance as in a small dedicated hardware or device to perform this task, like WD TV live or Acer Aspire Revo with the media center edition I'd be ok with setting up Squid / Linux / SquidGuard even if i'm not familiar with *nix but ideally a small form factor pc with dual nic's would be ideal so it can be out of sight for the most part !

  I'm looking to stream a directory of mp3s from my audio source (Debian server) to my Shoutcast server. The idea is to have an archive playing in the instance that someone isn't broadcasting live. I'm not sure how to continue. I started with extensive Google-ing, and was unable to come up with a solution. Evan Carroll suggested I try here. I appreciate any insight y'all may have. __ On a side note, "users with less than 100 reputation can't create new tags. The tags 'shoutcast-source shoutcast broadcasting' are new. Try using existing tags instead." -- Who can create these?

• Detecting man-in-the-middle attacks?

  There seem to be many possible ways to create man-in-the-middle attacks on public access points, by stealing the access point's local IP address with ARP spoofing. The possible attacks range from forging password request fields, to changing HTTPS connections to HTTP, and even the recently discovered possibilit of injecting malicious headers in the beginning of secure TLS connections. However, it seems to be claimed that these attacks are not very common. It would be interesting to see for myself. What ways are there to detect if such an attack is being attempted by someone on the network? I guess getting served a plain HTTP login page would be an obvious clue, and of course you could run Wireshark and keep reading all the interesting ARP traffic... But an automated solution would be a tiny bit more handy. Something that analyzes stuff on the background and alerts if an attack is detected on the network. It would be interesting to see for myself if these attack are actually going on somewhere.

• Temporarily disable an AD server

  Topology and setup We have main office A, and branch office (abroad) B. Our ISP somehow messed up the MPLS, and office A<B will not be connected until a few days. At location B, we have an AD (and the other two ADs at location A). Location A also have an exchange server. The problems A few users at A have problem to login to their computers running Windows XP, the logon process kind of hangs where "Applying computer policies". Additionally, I can't start the Exchange management shell, it fails on get-recipient because the AD abroad (location B) is unreachable. Solution? I could delete the AD at B, but Im pretty sure it will be a hazzle to re-join it, and since the office is abroad it's not an option to just go there and re-install it - re join, I now wonder how I in location As primary and secondary ADs can temporarily disable AD at location B.

• Cannot log on to a remote server using rdp from windows 7 machine when I am remotley connected to th

  Bear withe me, here is my set up. I use my 27" iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo 4GB Ram to connect to my work desktop running Windows 7. From there I can administer other remote servers. Here is the problem. Using the Remote Desktop Client on my Mac I can connect to my work machine no problem. But when I then use the work machine to open a remote desktop session with another Windows server (usually SBS 2003 but applies to all) I get the log in prompt, I enter the user name password ensure i'm connecting to the domain, but it wont log me in. The error message is the same, as though I had typed the wrong password (i know this is not the case). Does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance. Gary

• Colors differ in the dual monitor

  I use a dual monitor. The colors appear entirely different on the new monitor than they do on my laptop. When you are selecting colors etc, to be included in a website design, it totally freaks me out. Is there no software solution that finds how the settings of one of the monitor is and puts that to the second one? Otherwise what all settings do I need to change manually on the second monitor to make it appear as it does on the laptop? Thanks in advance.

• Oracle SOA Suite customer panel: Successful Application Integration & SOA Projects

  At the recent SOA Suite customer panel, Roger Brown from UNS Energy, Fabio Ravagni from Cencosud and Paras Jain from Cisco discussed their recent SOA Suite implementations, business drivers and challenges, architecture and lessons learned. Roger started by describing how UNS redesigned their internet portal to improve their customer experience and reduce manual steps in their business processes. Through the use of Oracle Service Bus, Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle Business Activity Monitoring, they provided more self-service functionality, automated their business processes and increased the use of their web site by 12.98% for number of visits and 33.58% for average visit duration. The screenshot below shows the UNS architecture: > Next Fabio described the challenges Cencosud faced through continuous expansion of their business, different standards and levels of expertise and large volumes of information. By introducing Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Data Integrator and Oracle Enterprise Repository, and with the help of Oracle Consulting, they significantly simplified their integration model, reduced their maintenance effort and increased their integration governance. • Why do I get "Permission denied (publickey)" when trying to SSH from local Ubuntu to a Amazon EC2 server?

  I have an instance of an application running in the cloud on Amazon EC2 instance, and I need to connect it from my local Ubuntu. It works fine on one of local ubuntu and also laptop. I got message "Permission denied (publickey)" when trying to access SSH to EC2 on another local Ubuntu. It's so strange to me. I'm thinking some sort of problems with security settings on the Amazon EC2 which has limited IPs access to one instance or certificate may need to regenerate. Does anyone know a solution?

• Bone creation in XNA Content Pipeline

  I'm trying to manually create a ModelContent instance that includes custom Bone data in a custom ContentProcessor in the XNA Content Pipeline. I can't seem to create or assign manually created bone data due to either private constructors or read-only collections (at every turn). The code I have right now that creates a single triangle ModelContent that I'd like to create a bone for is: MeshContent mc = new MeshContent(); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(-10, 0, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(0, 10, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(10, 0, 0)); GeometryContent gc = new GeometryContent(); gc.Indices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); gc.Vertices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); mc.Geometry.Add(gc); // Create normals MeshHelper.CalculateNormals(mc, true); // finally, convert it to a model ModelContent model = context.Convert<MeshContent, ModelContent>(mc, "ModelProcessor"); The documentation on XNA is amazingly sparse. I've been referencing the class diagrams created by DigitalRune and Sean Hargreaves blog, but I haven't found anything on creating bone content. Once the ModelContent is created, it's not possible to add bones because the Bones collection is read-only. And it seems the only way to create the ModelContent instance is to call the standard ModelProcessor via ContentProcessorContext.Convert. So it's a bit of a catch-22. The BoneContent class has a constructor but no methods except those inherited from NodeContent... though now (true to form) maybe I've realized the solution by asking the question. Should I create a root NodeContent with two children: one MeshContent and one BoneContent as the root of my skeleton; then pass the root NodeContent to ContentProcessorContext.Convert? Off to try that now...

• Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port significantly slower under Windows 7 comparing to Windows XP

  I am using a Prolific USB-to-Serial adapter based on the Prolific chip to use with a device on serial port. I have the latest version of the driver installed: 1.3.0 (2010-7-15). When I use my device with this adapter on my main Windows 7 (32bit) system it takes 8-9 seconds to send a command through to the device. However, when I do the same thing on a different Windows XP system (an old laptop I borrowed for testing) it only takes 2-3 seconds. I have made sure that the port settings and other variables are the same between systems. I also tested on a third laptop (also running Windows 7) and again got a significant delay. So the question is if anyone else experienced the same problem and found a solution. I would like to avoid moving to an XP system for what I need to achieve so that's my last option.

  Hello, I went through the archives here and the Wikipedia page on Project management software, but didn't find information on this type of application to manage projects: Native Windows application (don't like web-based solutions; prefer native to cross-platform) Free or affordable, ie. not an Enterprise solution Scalable from one to a few concurrent users Like MS Projet et al., a project consists in tasks which can be further divided into sub-tasks, and the whole thing is displayed in an tree list An item that has a date set (either start/due) must be displayed in a Calendar view, so it's easy to know what work must be done each day The Calendar view must somehow sync with smartphones (at least BlackBerry) At this point, the apps I know either don't provide a Calendar at all, or do but they can't sync with smartphones, which forces me to copy/paste scheduled items into Outlook so they are synced with my BlackBerry :-/ Thank you for any help.

• Light Voip and IM server for small teams

  So I have a small group that would need a self hosted Im/voip and possibly video conferencing solution. My goal is for a small group of people (no more than 40) to be able to collaborate within a local area network. I need something that is self hosted, so unfortunately outside solutions like Skype and hosted Lync would not work. I'm looking for something that would allow both one on one, and group communication, so and IRC server would not work. I'm hopefully looking for something that does not require multiple servers, or is too complex to set up. As a student, I have a license of Lync 2013, but setting that up on a single server without active directory is practically impossible. Would Lync 2010 be easier to do on a single server? Are there any other good solutions? Thanks

• First time application where to start?

  After many years of searches and copy pasting, I'm still looking for simple solution that can transliterate text input on the fly from one key set to another. There are quite few online services that provide this feature but it still quite annoying to go online all the time. Unfortunately there is not that many applications left which are capable of doing so, and none of them supported by this day. I decided to make my own and at same time to learn something new for my self. The idea is quite simple: application should sit in system tray and wait until input language get changed, for example to Russian. If Russian language is activated, application should start to listen for user key strokes combination and replace them based on custom dictionary for example R = ?, SH = ? etc. I should be able to bind application to any installed language (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian etc.) and customise dictionary for any of them. So my question is: Which language should I chose for this task C++, C# or might be something hardcore like Assembler, as application should work natively with Windows XP/Vista/7 or possibly Mac. (cross platform support is good but my main target is Windows) Due to nature of application behaviour how can I tell anti-virus software that it is not a "Key Logger" and basically not a virus? Where should I start and what should I be aware of? P.S. My current programming knowledge is quite basic, PHP and JavaScript with Object Oriented approach.

• Whatsup gold reporting

  I work for an IT consulting company, and we use WhatsUp Gold to monitor our and our clients' servers. WUG works, and provides all the data we need in a reasonably useful format. However, management wants to use it as a sales tool. They want more attractive reports that they can hand off to clients and prospective clients to show off how slick our monitoring software is. Is there a third-party solution that will generate more attractive reports based on data in the WUG database? I have already suggested using reporting services to build our own reports, but that idea was rejected.

  Symptoms: Server becomes unresponsive - Increase in load, all services stop Loss of connectivity - Ping/SSH Flush MySQL hosts after reboot - As MySQL refuses new connections Intermittent Apache crashes Generally happens early morning hours - 2 days of the week are however excluded Changes made: Updated the OS - to Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS Not sure if the MySQL server was also updated in the process Current MySQL version - mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.1.63, for debian-linux-gnu (x86_64) using readline 6.1 Updated Plesk from 10.4.4 Update #47 to 11.0.9 Update #23 Rebooted on almost daily basis All crons stopped for the times corresponding to the server crashes Created a MySQL log to monitor the lock times on queries Possible causes: Failing hardware Incorrect software configuration (MySQL, Apache etc) Responsibilities: Small webserver Runs our billing system - WHMCS Responsible for CRONs Bulk-email solution - No delivery times coincide with server crashes Proposed solutions: Move machine over to VM Format and restore the Plesk server backup and take it from there? Side notes: Seems to be a general Apache failure across all our linux servers - Intermittent problem Are we doing something fundamentally wrong in the Apache config?   I have a very serious problem here in one of my client server. The remote server is installed with REDHAT ES 5.2 and we have a postgresql as database. I was trying to clone the database. The hard drive had 32 GB of free space before taking clone. I started cloning the database and during the process, there was some internet issue and due to this, putty got disconnected before taking clone. So I opened another fresh session and I was able to see only 2.5GB as available space. Also I was not able to see the clone in the psql terminal. Any solution to get the 29GB that was consumed????

• One codec to rule them all

  I am streaming videos in my house via Windows Media Player Streaming, which is basically DLNA. So theoretically any DLNA compliant device can pick up the stream. However, I've quickly found that this is only one part of the solution. Over the years I've accumulated a ton of video-capable devices. While all these devices can see the Windows Media Player stream, they all speak in different codecs. And frankly, I am confused by codecs. In the beginning, I thought that the codecs were defined by the filename extension they carried (e.g. avi, mp4, wmv, etc...), but after further research, it looks like the extensions are simply containers. Inside an .avi file could reside several different codecs. So my question is this: is there a format/codec that plays equally well on any device.
