• Extract segments from FLV file?

  Hello I'm no expert with editing videos, and I need to rip a few segments from an FLV file, and then upload some of them to YouTube. I don't know if I need to convert FLV to AVI for YouTube to accept them. I've taken a look at VirtualDub + the FLV plug-in but the video isn't displayed correctly. I also tried AviDemux, but I couldn't find how to extract a segment after setting the A/Start and B/End points. Does someone know of a good solution to do this on Windows? Thank you.

• DNS server redirect users on first visit

  I am looking for a DNS level solution, that redirects a user to a specific IP on the first visit, than directs them to the correct IP on subsequent visits. So the idea is, for example, if a user visits "malicioussite.com", the first time they try to resolve that DNS name, it resolves to the IP of an internal web server, showing them a warning. On subsequent resolves, the users would get the actual IP, so they can visit the site. How can this be achieved? I am really flexible on what I can use, as long as its on the DNS level.

• Maximum number of files in one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance?

  I have an application writing to an ext3 directory which over time has grown to roughly three million files. Needless to say, reading the file listing of this directory is unbearably slow. I don't blame ext3. The proper solution would have been to let the application code write to sub-directories such as ./a/b/c/abc.ext rather than using only ./abc.ext. I'm changing to such a sub-directory structure and my question is simply: roughly how many files should I expect to store in one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance? What's your experience? Or in other words; assuming that I need to store three million files in the structure, how many levels deep should the ./a/b/c/abc.ext structure be? Obviously this is a question that cannot be answered exactly, but I'm looking for a ball park estimate.

• Cannot import video from a DV camcorder over FireWire

  I have a JVC GR-D320 miniDV camcorder that has a FireWire interface. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 RTM (64 bit, fresh installation). When I connect my camcorder through FireWire, I can see it in Device Manager without any warnings or problems, but I cannot capture videos from my miniDV tapes. After connecting, AutoPlay displays "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on." When using Windows Live Photo Gallery after selecting the import option, my camera is not listed. The camera used to work perfectly on the same hardware before upgrading to Windows 7 RTM 64 bit (it used to work fine on Windows XP SP3 32 bit). Googleing revealed that people had the exact same problems in Vista, but no solution was provided. Any help?

• Mapping drives on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard) permanently inside LAN

  Hi, How do I "map" shared folders on a Mac, permanently? With map, I do not mean 'connect', but permanently add it to the system so it exists after reboot. Since workstations tend to shutdown, I wonder also the symptoms and cures in case that happens. In Linux, this can be done using the fstab file, but I noticed that volumes are mounted in a different structure than Linux. I need this to backup some workstations, doing a recursive job over a single directory, that should contain the shared folders. I use Terminal to access the main system, so by preference, the solution would be nice that works within a bash shell vs GUI. I can access all folders in Finder. Thanks!

• Change Language in Windows 8.1

  I try to change the output language of windows 8.1 (not preview). I installed a German version of windows 8.1 and try to change language over the control panel as it is suggested by microsoft. But the change has no effect, and if i check the Language options it says "Es ist kein Sprachpaket verfügbar" (No language pack available). I cannot find a download for the en-GB language pack either, as MS suggests using the control panel to download the files. Has anybody experienced similar problems and found a solution?.

• Error building main Guest Additions Module while installing VirtualBox guest additions

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 Guest on Ubuntu 12.04 Host using VirtualBox. Everything is from repository and no direct install. When I install the guest additions, the below error is shown in the console. Before running the command I mapped the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in the Guest. The closest I could get is this article which says to install the latest version of VirtualBox (not the one from the repository). Is there any alternate solution? sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.1.12 Guest Additions for Linux......... • Using Scrum on small projects where Owner doesn't want to be involved

  Recently I've been reading and learning quite a lot about scrum and I like it a lot. However, I do have a couple of likely scenarios in my head to which I don't know the solution. So let's say that I might want to organize an agile team of (for instance) four web developers (one of them UI/UX designer). This team would operate on scrum principles. Initially we would probably be working on projects like landing pages for ordinary people's small businesses, like renting apartments, selling cookies... Such customers simply can't be set with Product Owner role (IMHO), because they usually expect to hire a company, give them the overall project goal with some details, and then expect the job to be done (including a lot of decision making) with as little of their involvement as possible (in their opinion, they have more important things to do). Let's say I'd like to engage myself in a developer/scrum master role (I know that even that is debatable, being a team member and scrum master at once), so I simply shouldn't take the role of the product owner as well. So as for my questions: If I'm my company's business owner, do I simply need to be a product owner as well (do these roles include each other)? Can I employ a sales person which might have the product owner role? Would it be better if it is an experienced developer instead of a sales person? Is this even a smart move? Lastly, is there another agile approach that might better suit my position? EDIT: Thank you everyone for good inputs. I added some comments, any aditional info will be greatly appreciated.

• Unable to cast transparent proxy to type &lt;type&gt;

  This is not the first time I've run into this wonderful error while creating new AppDomains in .NET and then trying to load types and access them across App Domains. In almost all cases the problem I've run into with this error the problem comes from the two AppDomains involved loading different copies of the same type. Unless the types match exactly and come exactly from the same assembly the typecast will fail. The most common scenario is that the types are loaded from different assemblies - as unlikely as that sounds. An Example of Failure To give some context, I'm working on some old code in Html Help Builder that creates a new AppDomain in order to parse assembly information for documentation purposes. I create a new AppDomain in order to load up an assembly process it and then immediately unload it along with the AppDomain. The AppDomain allows for unloading that otherwise wouldn't be possible as well as isolating my code from the assembly that's being loaded. The process to accomplish this is fairly established and I use it for lots of applications that use add-in like functionality - basically anywhere where code needs to be isolated and have the ability to be unloaded. My pattern for this is: Create a new AppDomain Load a Factory Class into the AppDomain Use the Factory Class to load additional types from the remote domain Here's the relevant code from my TypeParserFactory that creates a domain and then loads a specific type - TypeParser - that is accessed cross-AppDomain in the parent domain:public class TypeParserFactory : System.MarshalByRefObject,IDisposable { …/// <summary> /// TypeParser Factory method that loads the TypeParser /// object into a new AppDomain so it can be unloaded. /// Creates AppDomain and creates type. /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> public TypeParser CreateTypeParser() { if (!CreateAppDomain(null)) return null; /// Create the instance inside of the new AppDomain /// Note: remote domain uses local EXE's AppBasePath!!! TypeParser parser = null; try { Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); string assemblyPath = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; parser = (TypeParser) this.LocalAppDomain.CreateInstanceFrom(assemblyPath, typeof(TypeParser).FullName).Unwrap(); } catch (Exception ex) { this.ErrorMessage = ex.GetBaseException().Message; return null; } return parser; } private bool CreateAppDomain(string lcAppDomain) { if (lcAppDomain == null) lcAppDomain = "wwReflection" + Guid.NewGuid().ToString().GetHashCode().ToString("x"); AppDomainSetup setup = new AppDomainSetup(); // *** Point at current directory setup.ApplicationBase = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory; //setup.PrivateBinPath = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "bin"); this.LocalAppDomain = AppDomain.CreateDomain(lcAppDomain,null,setup); // Need a custom resolver so we can load assembly from non current path AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve += new ResolveEventHandler(CurrentDomain_AssemblyResolve); return true; } …} Note that the classes must be either [Serializable] (by value) or inherit from MarshalByRefObject in order to be accessible remotely. Here I need to call methods on the remote object so all classes are MarshalByRefObject. The specific problem code is the loading up a new type which points at an assembly that visible both in the current domain and the remote domain and then instantiates a type from it. This is the code in question:Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); string assemblyPath = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; parser = (TypeParser) this.LocalAppDomain.CreateInstanceFrom(assemblyPath, typeof(TypeParser).FullName).Unwrap(); The last line of code is what blows up with the Unable to cast transparent proxy to type <type> error. Without the cast the code actually returns a TransparentProxy instance, but the cast is what blows up. In other words I AM in fact getting a TypeParser instance back but it can't be cast to the TypeParser type that is loaded in the current AppDomain. Finding the Problem To see what's going on I tried using the .NET 4.0 dynamic type on the result and lo and behold it worked with dynamic - the value returned is actually a TypeParser instance: Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly(); string assemblyPath = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; object objparser = this.LocalAppDomain.CreateInstanceFrom(assemblyPath, typeof(TypeParser).FullName).Unwrap(); // dynamic works dynamic dynParser = objparser; string info = dynParser.GetVersionInfo(); // method call works // casting fails parser = (TypeParser)objparser; So clearly a TypeParser type is coming back, but nevertheless it's not the right one. Hmmm… mysterious.Another couple of tries reveal the problem however:// works dynamic dynParser = objparser; string info = dynParser.GetVersionInfo(); // method call works // c:\wwapps\wwhelp\wwReflection20.dll (Current Execution Folder) string info3 = typeof(TypeParser).Assembly.CodeBase; // c:\program files\vfp9\wwReflection20.dll (my COM client EXE's folder) string info4 = dynParser.GetType().Assembly.CodeBase; // fails parser = (TypeParser)objparser; As you can see the second value is coming from a totally different assembly. Note that this is even though I EXPLICITLY SPECIFIED an assembly path to load the assembly from! Instead .NET decided to load the assembly from the original ApplicationBase folder. Ouch! How I actually tracked this down was a little more tedious: I added a method like this to both the factory and the instance types and then compared notes:public string GetVersionInfo() { return ".NET Version: " + Environment.Version.ToString() + "\r\n" + "wwReflection Assembly: " + typeof(TypeParserFactory).Assembly.CodeBase.Replace("file:///", "").Replace("/", "\\") + "\r\n" + "Assembly Cur Dir: " + Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() + "\r\n" + "ApplicationBase: " + AppDomain.CurrentDomain.SetupInformation.ApplicationBase + "\r\n" + "App Domain: " + AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName + "\r\n"; } For the factory I got: .NET Version: 4.0.30319.239wwReflection Assembly: c:\wwapps\wwhelp\bin\wwreflection20.dllAssembly Cur Dir: c:\wwapps\wwhelpApplicationBase: C:\Programs\vfp9\App Domain: wwReflection534cfa1f For the instance type I got: .NET Version: 4.0.30319.239wwReflection Assembly: C:\\Programs\\vfp9\wwreflection20.dllAssembly Cur Dir: c:\\wwapps\\wwhelpApplicationBase: C:\\Programs\\vfp9\App Domain: wwDotNetBridge_56006605 which clearly shows the problem. You can see that both are loading from different appDomains but the each is loading the assembly from a different location. Probably a better solution yet (for ANY kind of assembly loading problem) is to use the .NET Fusion Log Viewer to trace assembly loads.The Fusion viewer will show a load trace for each assembly loaded and where it's looking to find it. Here's what the viewer looks like: The last trace above that I found for the second wwReflection20 load (the one that is wonky) looks like this:*** Assembly Binder Log Entry (1/13/2012 @ 3:06:49 AM) *** The operation was successful. Notice that the fusion log clearly shows that the .NET loader makes no attempt to even load the assembly from the path I explicitly specified. Remember your Assembly Locations As mentioned earlier all failures I've seen like this ultimately resulted from different versions of the same type being available in the two AppDomains. At first sight that seems ridiculous - how could the types be different and why would you have multiple assemblies - but there are actually a number of scenarios where it's quite possible to have multiple copies of the same assembly floating around in multiple places. If you're hosting different environments (like hosting the Razor Engine, or ASP.NET Runtime for example) it's common to create a private BIN folder and it's important to make sure that there's no overlap of assemblies. In my case of Html Help Builder the problem started because I'm using COM interop to access the .NET assembly and the above code. COM Interop has very specific requirements on where assemblies can be found and because I was mucking around with the loader code today, I ended up moving assemblies around to a new location for explicit loading. The explicit load works in the main AppDomain, but failed in the remote domain as I showed. The solution here was simple enough: Delete the extraneous assembly which was left around by accident. Not a common problem, but one that when it bites is pretty nasty to figure out because it seems so unlikely that types wouldn't match. I know I've run into this a few times and writing this down hopefully will make me remember in the future rather than poking around again for an hour trying to debug the issue as I did today.   I tried to build the linux kernel 3.0.4 on ubuntu 11.10 in virtualbox. Here are my steps: Download the source code tar xjvf linux-source-3.0.0.tar.bz2 cd linux-source-3.0.0 make menuconfig, changed nothing but used the default config and save to .config make Actually I think it should be 3.0.4 because from the Makefile I could see VERSION = 3 PATCHLEVEL = 0 SUBLEVEL = 4 EXTRAVERSION = Then at stage 2 which is to make modules, an error happened: ERROR: "__modver_version_show" [drivers/staging/rts5139/rts5139.ko] undefined! make[1]: *** [__modpost] Error 1 make: *** [modules] Error 2 Perhaps because 3.0.4 is a new release so that I can not find any same problem asked nor any solution to it.

• When to move into a CRM system?

  I have a client that is currently managing around 5000+ contacts via Outlook. There is also a BES Express installation in place. There are a couple problems. First, there is a corrupt contact in there somewhere that is preventing either a cabled or over the air sync of the complete list to a blackberry. The second, is that it just seems to be getting a bit unruly. They currently have a license for ACT, which I'm trying to get them to move into, but at what number does the contact list need to be at to migrate away from using Outlook/Exchange and into a real CRM solution?

• IIS replaces redirect status header from PHP with 302 Redirect

  Hello I hope I am posting this in the correct place... I'm having an issue with a 301 redirect in php. Looking at the headers, if I do a simple 301 redirect, it actually appears as a 302 redirect which is not what I am after. This is the php code: header("Status: 301 Moved Permanently"); header('Location: newurl'); It is running on the latest version of php, IIS7 and uses the FastCGI module (which is apparently where this bug could exist). • Multi-Tenant VMWare View Deployment

  We have VMWare View 5 set up for a single tenant environment, absolutely brilliant and works perfectly. Two thumbs up there! We're looking at the possibility of deploying this in a multi tenant scenario, where multiple unlinked companies connect to a VDI solution hosted by us but have no visibility of each other. Obviously;y this could be achieved by doubling up on all the components, having a complete VMWare View stack for each tenant, but this seems a little bit messy. Has anyone done this before, and if so how? Googling sheds little light apart from this experts exchange topic.

• GNU Screen: «unknown command 'vert_split'» though C-a | works

  Hi, in GNU-screen (4.00.03jw4 FAU 2-May-06) I'm able to perform a vertical split pressing C-a | (i.e. Ctrl+a, then pipe). Since I'd like to have the screen vertically splitted at the program startup, I put "vert_split" in my .screenrc file, but when I start it I can read «unknown command 'vert_split'» for few seconds in the status bar, and the screen is indeed not splitted. I can't find a solution for this in the manual. Can someone please help me? Thank you.

  I have a (text) file containing a list of web site addresses. I know that I can open the file in an editor and then copy-paste the addresses to the browser address bar. That means, if I have ten addresses in that file, I will need ten copy-paste operations, which must be tedious. But is there a way to ask the browser (preferably Google Chrome or Firefox) to open all of them in one go in different tabs? I am using Ubuntu, if that is related in any way to the solution you provide.

  Hi folks, I'm brand new to Jetty. I'd like to ask if its possible to have Jetty listening on port 8080, however where specified, serve a specific web application under say /var/jetty/webapps/<appname> (default on CentOS) served on say port 10000 instead of http://localhost:8080/<appname> i.e. http://localhost:10000/ = http://localhost:8080/<appname&gt; ? If so, what configuration changes would be required to make this work without an additional proxy server? I've googled away, but haven't found a solution (perhaps I've missed something obvious?).

• SQL 2008 Mirroring, how to failover from the mirror database?

  I have configured a database mirroring setup in SQL 2008 using the High-safety, Synchronous mode, without automatic failover. I don't have a Witness instance. Regarding high availability, I understand Mirroring is a better strategy than Log Shipping (faster and smoother failover), and cheaper than Clustering (because of license and hardware costs). According to the MS docs, to do the failover you need to access to the Principal database and in the "Mirror" options click the "Failover" button. But I want to do this from the Mirror database, because what would be the benefit as all this setup is being done in case the Principal server knocks down? Evidently I am missing something. If Mirroring is not a solution for server downtime (as would be Clustering, if I understand correctly), then which practical (i.e. real world examples) cases would benefit from Mirroring for high-availability purposes? • Ignoring GET parameters in Varnish VCL

  Okay: I've got a site set up which has some APIs we expose to developers, which are in the format /api/item.xml?type_ids=34,35,37&region_ids=1000002,1000003&key=SOMERANDOMALPHANUM In this URI, type_ids is always set, region_ids and key are optional. The important thing to note is that the key variable does not affect the content of the response. It is used for internal tracking of requests so we can identify people who make slow or otherwise unwanted requests. In Varnish, we have a VCL like this: if (req.http.host ~ "the-site-in-question.com") { if (req.url ~ "^/api/.+\.xml") { unset req.http.cookie; } } We just strip cookies out and let the backend do the rest as far as times are concerned (this is a hackaround since Rails/authlogic sends session cookies with API responses). At present though, any distinct developers are basically hitting different caches since &key=SOMEALPHANUM is considered as part of the Varnish hash for storage. This is obviously not a great solution and I'm trying to work out how to tell Varnish to ignore that part of the URI.

• TrueCrypt with ext2/3 partition write access under Mac OS X Snow Leopard ?

  I'm using a TrueCrypt volume with an ext3 partition under Snow Leopard with MacFUSE. I can mount ordinary (unencrypted) ext3 partitions read/write from the shell by adding command line arguments as shown in "Mounting ext3 in Snow Leopard…". However, TrueCrypt mounts the partition read-only and I don't see any way to 'sneak in' the required additional arguments. How do I mount it read/write? I was hoping for a similar solution as for mounting NTFS, but diskutil info /Volumes/my_volume/ does not return a UUID; it does tell me Read-Only Media: No Read-Only Volume: Yes though...
