  I have just been promoted to Systems Administrator for our product. We are designing a application that communicates with the cloud(Amazon EC2). I will be in charge of maintaining all Instances and their underlying components. So far this involves a set of load balanced services instances that connect to a central DB in a multi-tennant DB design. Im interested in what other Sys. Admins have discovered as invaluable tools or practices. Any resources provided will be greatly appreciated.

• Secure external connection to SQL Server (from third party software)

  I have a SQL Express 2008 R2 server running on a server in an internal lan network. A few databases are used by some third party software to store data. A SQL-Server user is used by this application to connect to the database. Now I need to access this database using a local installation of the software from an external pc. In this particular case a VPN connection is not the solution I am looking for. I have access to an external linux server, so I tried ssh tunneling from the windows server to the linux server and use the external pc to tunnel it back from the linux server to the client, but this is working very very slow. What are my other options to allow this external connection in a safe way?

• activesync not working with forms based authentication

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • Asus Eee PC 1000HE wireless woes

  Ever since I have upgraded my Asus Eee PC 1000HE from Lucid 10.04 to Precise 12.04 I have been having issues with my wireless connections. At first I had wireless dropouts: I would be able to start using wireless, but then after a few minutes the wireless would stop working even though I was still connected to the network. Lately things turned worse: while I connect to my wireless network, it just never works. I tried all sorts of solutions on offer here and in other forums but none worked. At best I got the wireless to work up until I rebooted, at which point I would get the same symptoms again: the wireless network is there, but it's not really working. By now I tried so many different "solutions" I don't know where to start describing them; I have also reinstalled 12.04 several times, enough to make me lose faith in Ubuntu. Help here looks like my last resort. For the record, my Asus Eee PC 1000HE is equipped with an Atheros wireless card. I have reinstalled 12.04, ran all the suggested updates, and receive the following response when I type iwconfig in the terminal: lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"Arsenal" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:04:ED:48:67:89 Bit Rate=1 Mb/s Tx-Power=16 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-29 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:27 Invalid misc:57 Missed beacon:0 eth0 no wireless extensions. • Big Data – Data Mining with Hive – What is Hive? – What is HiveQL (HQL)? – Day 15 of 21

  In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the operational database in Big Data Story. In this article we will understand what is Hive and HQL in Big Data Story. Yahoo started working on PIG (we will understand that in the next blog post) for their application deployment on Hadoop. The goal of Yahoo to manage their unstructured data. Similarly Facebook started deploying their warehouse solutions on Hadoop which has resulted in HIVE. The reason for going with HIVE is because the traditional warehousing solutions are getting very expensive. What is HIVE? Hive is a datawarehouseing infrastructure for Hadoop. The primary responsibility is to provide data summarization, query and analysis. It  supports analysis of large datasets stored in Hadoop’s HDFS as well as on the Amazon S3 filesystem. The best part of HIVE is that it supports SQL-Like access to structured data which is known as HiveQL (or HQL) as well as big data analysis with the help of MapReduce. Hive is not built to get a quick response to queries but it it is built for data mining applications. Data mining applications can take from several minutes to several hours to analysis the data and HIVE is primarily used there. HIVE Organization The data are organized in three different formats in HIVE. Tables: They are very similar to RDBMS tables and contains rows and tables. Hive is just layered over the Hadoop File System (HDFS), hence tables are directly mapped to directories of the filesystems. It also supports tables stored in other native file systems. Partitions: Hive tables can have more than one partition. They are mapped to subdirectories and file systems as well. Buckets: In Hive data may be divided into buckets. Buckets are stored as files in partition in the underlying file system. Hive also has metastore which stores all the metadata. It is a relational database containing various information related to Hive Schema (column types, owners, key-value data, statistics etc.). We can use MySQL database over here. What is HiveSQL (HQL)? Hive query language provides the basic SQL like operations. Here are few of the tasks which HQL can do easily. Create and manage tables and partitions Support various Relational, Arithmetic and Logical Operators Evaluate functions Download the contents of a table to a local directory or result of queries to HDFS directory Here is the example of the HQL Query: SELECT upper(name), salesprice FROM sales; SELECT category, count(1) FROM products GROUP BY category; When you look at the above query, you can see they are very similar to SQL like queries. • How can I delete virtual networks from command line?

  I have Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (without GUI) running at my colo for a week. I was connected via RDP and could use the menu interface and command line. I figured out how to connect Hyper-V Manager from my Win7 laptop (THANK YOU HVREMOTE!), and created and installed my VM. I created a virtual network that didn't work (no connectivity from my VM) so I created another using different settings, and now have lost access to the Hyper-V host. No ping, no RDP. Since I don't have console access, I cannot troubleshoot. I believe if I deleted the Virtual Networks I'd regain access, but I need a command line instruction for this, that the staff onsite could enter to accomplish this. I find no help anywhere obvious (MSDN, etc), the keywords are too general. Can anyone refer me to simple steps how to do this over command line or with the menu based interface on the console?

  I am looking for an employee monitoring solution, that would allow us to remotely connect to our computers to see what is happening live, and preferably having some recording capabilities such as snapshots, URLs visited, etc ... I've looked around the web and most softwares I found were from unknown companies, had crappy websites, and made me feel like their either wanted me to install a virus on my computer, or to scam me. Most also seemed to have planted "reviews" online most likely written by themselves. Basically, anyone has experience with a trustworthy company to accomplish that? Thanks

• Network - Routers conflicting in my subnet

  I have a router whose IP is 192.168.1.1 and I be experiencing conflict with another router on my subnet (which probably has 192.168.1.1 as IP too). I think when it tries to connect to the network, eventually taking the place of my router because when I try to access the config page of my router, which appears to me is a config page from another router that is not mine. Do you have any solution except to change the IP of my router to an IP not common? As I have set up the exclusivity that only my IP router? I work with dynamic IPs (wireless networking) and static (for wired). How do I? I just wanna to do some setting in my router that affects all other, so that doesn't conflicts anymore.

• SQL Azure Service Issues &ndash; 10.27.2012 (Restored Now)

  Please note that if you have a Windows Azure website, or use SQL Azure, your site may be experiencing downtime currently.  Notice I just called in regarding one of my public facing internet sites, because the site was failing to load anything but its error page, I couldn’t connect to the database to inspect application error logs, and the Windows Azure Management portal won’t load the SQL Azure extension. After speaking to the representative, he also mentioned that they were also having some problems updating the Service Dashboard which shows service up/down time, and for now, they are posting messages at http://account.windowsazure.com.  Please note that this issue may only be effecting certain regions.  Last, I may have misheard the representative, but he said that the outage was being categorized as a level 8, and if I heard correctly, I think he said that level 8 was the worst level.  I can’t say for sure on this though, because the phone connection to their support number was bad – large amounts of white noise. Good Luck! Update It appears that this outage may also be effecting the following services: SQL Database, Service Bus, Datamarket, Windows Azure Marketplace, Shared Caching, Access Control 2.0, and SQL Reporting. The note on the account page says for the South Central US region, however, I believe the representative I spoke to also mentioned North Central. As I said before though, the connection was bad. Update 2 My site regained connectivity about an hour ago, and it appears that the service dashboard is back in operation with correct status and history. It does appear that I misheard on the phone regarding multiple regions, so chances are this only effected a percentage of the platform. All in all, if this WAS their worst level of a problem, they really got it fixed and back up pretty fast. All in all, I understand that it is inherent for a complex system such as Azure to have ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I am still happy to support Azure to its fullest!

• Windows server 2008 rejecting packets from client

  We deployed a server application in .NET 4.0 that is going to run on Windows Server 2008 R2. Strangely, the clients cannot connect to the server given an external IP and the server port. I've ran wireshark diagnostics on the server computer and verified that the packets are arriving to the NIC without any issue so it seems Windows Server 2008 is the culprit here. I've tried to temporarily disable the firewall and add the server port into inbound/outbound rule but it still doesn't solve the issue. How can I solve this issue?

• How to use WeirdX applet instead of X11 for remote connections in Mac OS X?

  When I am away, I've got an Apple PowerBook set up to use X11 forwarding with SSH to connect to a remote iMac in my room. Whenever I start X client programs on the client iMac, X11 would start on my PowerBook, which is OK. Question: Is it possible to change my settings so that the WeirdX applet I have on my PowerBook will take care of the X client programs instead of the default X11? Is there a config file I can edit to chance the $DISPLAY variable, and what should I set it to? Is this even the issue? Thank you very much.

• DYNDNS setup with TightVNC on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hey all, i seem to be having a problem with getting ports to forward on my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC. I already set all my port forwarding for 5900/5800 on my router for my PC's IP address (192.168.1.22) but when i try to use the TightVNC PFPortChecker on port 5900 it tells me its not opened! I can not even connect to my DYNDNS server name (xxxxxxx.dyndns.org). As a side note, i am running Windows XP SP3 within a VirtaulBox inside Windows Server 2008 R2 but running the PFPortChecker in Windows 2008 R2 brings the same results as it does in the VM. I also added them to the Windows Firewall Advanced Security form to add those inbound ports for full access. What could i possibly be missing? Thanks for your time! David

  I have installed Android as per this guide as a guess os via VirtualBox: http://www.android-x86.org/documents/virtualboxhowto Using the following ISO: android-x86-4.0-RC1-eeepc.iso But I am unable to connect to the internet from within the android virtual machine. The host OS is Ubuntu 12.04 where the internet works fine. I have internet access via a usb wireless connection to the home router. All this is fine. If I install Ubuntu 12.04 as a guest, where the host is also Ubuntu 12.04. The guest os'es internet works fine out of the box. But for some reason, I can't get the above androids internet to work out of the box as the guest os. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

• Creating Shared Wifi Connection on Windows 7 WITHOUT wep/wpa security?

  Ok, for some reason I just can't figure this out on Windows 7. Never had an issue with it on Windows XP, never tried in Vista. I realize that I need to create an Ad-Hoc setup which I can do. However I can't get it to share the wireless signal on my laptop. Even if I go into the adapter settings. I need (well, want) to connect my old Psion netBook to my home network and due to the wireless card, I can't have any form of security. Thanks in advance!

• Dialog box keeps asking for password

  I am running Windows 7, Outlook 2007 (Office 2007 pro) and I'm connecting to our Exchange Server 2007 which is part of Small Business Server 2008. Outlook 2007 on one client keeps asking for the password to the remote access URL. If I simply click cancel it's OK for a few minutes. Entering the password and clicking the save PW box does no good. Sometimes clicking cancel results in another dilog box asking the same thing and I may have to click cancel several times to get it to go away for a while. Occasionally Outlook may actually go into a mode where it says it needs the password typed so I click the link which brings the dialog back but simply clicking cancel will make Outlook connect again. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

I've created a mailbox for my test user "nrahl": cm user/nrahl and then created a password: $ saslpasswd2 nrahl I'm attempting to connect to the mailbox using Thunderbird. I'm using the machine's LAN IP address as the host, and "nrahl" as the username. It connects to the server and prompts me for the password. I start wondering is there a way to access MSSQL over SSH and send T-SQL commands. I am able to connect my router which running on FreeBSD OS, also other CentOS server with MYSQL are able to me over SSH. I want to try access MS-SQL-2005 from my mobile phone, Probably this is not going to have daily use, it is just for geeky and justification to myself: why I had to buy so expensive a toy

• Cisco FC SAN switch decision

  I've got to buy a bunch of FC SAN switches in the next week or so, I have to, and want to, buy Cisco MDSs. Servers are HP BL490c G6's in C7000 chassis with Virtual-Connect Flex-10 ethernet interconnects and VC FC interconnects (Emulex HBAs btw), all running ESX 3.5U4 (for now). I think I've only really got two choices; MDS 9509's with dual-supervisors with a single 48-port 4Gb FC card MDS 9222i's with single supervisor and the built-in 18-FC-port/4-GigE-FCIP-port option Both have the same functionality (I think, buying the enterprise licence btw), both have plenty enough performance and adequate ports for now and the next three years. The 9222i's are about 55% the price of the 9509's - logic says get the 'i's but will I really miss the dual-supervisors? I've got lots of 9509's with dual-supervisors that I'm very happy with but I'm not sure I've every benefitted from the dual-sups in the past and they are nearly twice the price - but if I don't buy them and miss them I can't retrofit them later. What are your thoughts?

• Simple copy to pen-drive - 0x80070057

  Hello guys, I have this problem for a while and still didn't find the answer. I'm copying a specifc 10mb file to my pen-drive, from any folder on PC to any folder on the pen-drive and all i get is this: 0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect I simply cannot copy the file at all!! The pen-drive in case is my Nokia 5800, in "Mass Storage" mode. Sometimes I cannot copy a single MP3 file, 5 or 7mb. So i have to disconnect and connect again. The source file is not corrupted, the destination works fine with other files. It's just with some files. If I change to another pen-drive, works fine.
