• Web and stand-alone apps development tendency

  There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I really would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming. • MVC partial page update

  Hello, I have an MVC project where I have a form with fields a user can enter and save. On that same page I have a table which shows a brief listing of information that the user just saved. The problem I am having is trying to update only the table after a save and not an entire page refresh. Is this possible in jquery or MVC? If so does anyone have an example. • Need to copy remotely hosted file via Shell Command

  There is a file that hosted remotely on a server that is not supporting Shell Access. I bought a new server that supports Shell Access so now I want to copy a file that is on the non-supporting server to new server via a Shell Command using Putty. File url is like this http://www.domain.com/file.gzip and it is username/password protected. To be more specific, I want to copy a backup of a home directory from cPanel to my new server via Shell command. I have done this few months ago but I don't remember it now and also I failed to Google it.

I've tried removing the +followSymlinks line, even the rewrite engine line. I haven't tried removing the conditions cause I don't think I should have to, I'm probably wrong.

• How can I kill MySQL queries every 60 seconds in Windows?

  I want to check my MySQL server every minute and kill queries that have run longer than 150 seconds. The main reason I want to do this is because I don't want queries from certain people to lock up the DB for everyone else. I know this is not the ultimate solution to the problem, but at least it's a fallback in case something goes wrong with a query. I don't have a slave DB (this is just an at-home project). I'd like to schedule a script to run that does this for me. I'm unfamiliar with Perl or Ruby and I need it done on my Windows 2008 Server box. I've looked into creating a simple cmd line script, but that doesn't seem to be possible. I know currently I can do something like this but I have to do it manually: mysqladmin processlist mysqladmin kill Anyone have any ideas or examples on how I could do this?

• Indexing Bilingual Sites

  Hi all I have a site that supports two languages. The way the user changes the language is by clicking on a language link that will change his session language from A to B and return him to the same page. The problem that I am facing is that Google doesn't index the other language since it is seeing that the language link is the same as the page link but with changes in the parameters. So is there a way to inform google of the language, or should I add the language in the url, i.e. www.example.com/A/home?

• MPICH2 vs KERRYGHED

  Hi All right now I am moving first steps in clustering. I installed MPICH2 on my Ubuntu at home and I have a silly question about it. For what I am reading right now it seems that it provides the capability of sending processes to other pcs. I went for this lib just because I set it up very quickly and easily. Compared to MPICH2 , do you know what is the advantage of having a different clustering system like KERRYGHED? It seems that these ones also provide this capability, but the Kernel must be rebuild, so I suppose that it is going to be faster. What other advantages are remarkable for a clustering system like this? Thanks

• layout is not included in all pages in asp.net mvc4 application

  I am developing an asp.net mvc4 application with Bootstrap 3 and i've _Layout.cshtml in "Shared" folder , in Views, i've two pages, "Index and "Register" and i've included Layout in both of these Views but It seems that Layout is included in only "Index and not in "Register" View. • Looking for a new PHP website framework

  I built many a website, and my own 'custom' framework is just a general box of scripts cobbled together with loose ideas. I would love to progress to a framework which allows me to pass it onto the client for freedom. Someone suggested using wordpress but I'm not sure how general this can be. A current site I need to build is a fancy kitchen company, price lists, flash gallery (with backend driven pics) and well designed home. How could I bend the the will of wordpress?   hey... i'm doing my html and javascript class project and i want to have a msgbox welcoming the visitor asking for his name and then a welcoming msgbox shows up saying "hello (the name added)" i know how to do that but my only problem is that if i pressed back and went to the homepage of my website again, the msg will show up again asking for my name is there anyway to prevent this from happening? seriously don't want the visitor to wite his name each time he goes to the home page please help this is the code i'm using: <script> response = window.prompt("Welcome!","Please enter your name"); window.alert("hello " + response); </script> please help

• slow android emulator

  I have a 2.67GHz Celeron Processor, 1.21GBs of RAM on a x86 Windows XP Pro machine. My understanding is that the emulator should start fairly quickly on such a machine, but for me it does not. I have followed all instructions in setting up the IDE, SDKs, JDKs and such and have had some success in staring the emulator quickly but is very particulary. How can I if possible fix this problem. Even if it starts and loads home screen it is very sluggish. Any help would be appreciated guys thanks. I have tried the Eclipse IDE in Galileos, and Ganymede.

• Excel + Web Data

  I've spent hours scouring the net for anything to do with VBA calling data from the web in excel and nothing provides a tutorial on how to do so, only complicated examples un-related to what I want to do. I want to pull data from either a .html or .xml site, doesn't matter, via Excel and find specific points in that data. I can find specific points but don't know how to get the data or scroll through multiple lines. I've done this exact sort of thing in mIRC (sort of C code). http://eve-central.com/home/quicklook.html?typeid=438 http://api.eve-central.com/api/quicklook?typeid=438 Those are two examples, using roughly the same data I'd like to retrieve. • Does an HTTPS SharePoint Site Need to Use HTTPS-Compliant Web Parts?

  I am new to SharePoint, so this question may be a little naive. However, I sincerely appreciate any help with this. We are planning to create a new sub-site within our company's intranet site, which is built on SharePoint 2007. We want to add a 3rd-party weather web part (which is just a widget to display the local weather forecast) to the home page of the new intranet site. Since the intranet site uses HTTPS, do we need to find an HTTPS-compliant web part? Or, is it possible to use any web part and then configure it to use HTTPS? I'm assuming that if we use a non-HTTPS web part, then users will get some sort of "This page contains both secure and non-secure items" error message when they load the page.

• Namespace with index action in Rails

  I have an admin controller located inside /controllers/admin/admin_controller.rb I also have a pages controller located inside /controllers/admin/pages_controller.rb In my routes.rb file, I have the following: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :pages end When the user goes to localhost:3000/admin, I'd like the user to see a page with a link to /admin/pages (Pages CRUD) and to / (To go back home). Since I am using a namespace, I cannot have an index action for /admin. How would I get this done and still have my controllers located inside my /controllers/admin folder (rather than using admin as a map.resources component and a has_many association to pages). Please note I am only interested in the show action of admin. Thank you!

• How can I allow only privledged users to download a pdf with php?

  Lets say I have some pdf files stored on my server and I only want to allow a person who's paid have access to download a particular pdf. So for an example, let's say I have a bunch of e-books. The only way a user would be able to download e-book A is if his account contains the right credentials for that particular book. What's the best way to accomplish this? Any ideas/advice on how to improve my idea are greatly appreciated! My current idea: A user places an order Upon success, a new folder would be created by their /account_num/order_id/ A copy of the particular file would be stored in this directory Have php generate an .htaccess that would only allow access from a url that contains a random hash embedded into it. The only way a user would be able to access this random hashed page is if they are signed in as the right user, and the hash matches up with the hash stored in the database, otherwise they are redirected to home page.

  I am making a simple online application. I have a navigation bar with a few buttons and one "div" into which all the new contents will be loaded dynamically i.e. when I click "About", it will load the page parts into the "div" without reloading the whole page with .load() function. The problem is: what if I need to give a link to the Documents section of my web site, or the user wants to store this kind of link, the url is not rewritten when browsing my site. when the user stores the default link it will always link him to the default "Home" part. How can I rewrite the URL and what is the most correct way to do this?

  So the question is simple: is it possible to set windows desktop to corporate application page (anybody remembers that active desktop thing?) and use it instead of browser (sic!). My thoughts: Windows 7: I can create giant full-screen widget that will show my page. Still have no idea if I will be able to navigate inside it though. Windows Vista: ???. I know there is still a side bar gadget that hosts a browser. Windows XP: create static html page with iframe pointing to corporate app home page. Problem: clicking links on page still opens default browser.

• Android app crashes on second run

  I have been working on my app and it runs on the simulator fine. I loaded it into my phone and now I have a problem. It runs fine when I first start it and also if I pick home and then restart it; however, if I use the back arrow and then restart it it crashes on that time, but will work out the next time I start it. I think it has to do with some kind of memory build up, but I verified onDestroy is being called, I figured that deletes everything my program created, right?

• Enumerating combinations in a distributed manner

  I have a problem where I must analyse 500C5 combinations (255244687600) of something. Distributing it over a 10 node cluster where each cluster processes roughly 10^6 combinations per second means the job will be complete in about 7hours. The problem I have is distributing the 255244687600 combinations over the 10 nodes. I'd like to present each node with 25524468760, however the algorithms I'm using can only produce the combinations sequentially, I'd like to be able to pass the set of elements and a range of combination indicies eg: [0-10^7) or [10^7,2.0 10^7) etc and have the nodes themselves figure out the combinations. The algorithms I'm using at the moment are from the following: http://home.roadrunner.com/~hinnant/combinations.html A logical question I've considered using a master node, that enumerates each of the combinations and sends work to each of the nodes, however the overhead incurred in iterating the combinations from a single node and communicating back and forth work is enormous, and will subsequently lead to the master node becoming the bottleneck. Are there any good combination iterating algorithms geared up for efficient/optimal distributed enumeration?

• Delphi: Application error logging in the field

  Using Delphi 7, I wonder if there is a free component which will collect diagnostic information as my application runs at a remote site and will help me to debug error reports. Maybe it records each menu item selected, control clicked, text input, etc? Maybe it just dumps the stack on a crash. Maybe it does something else ... I don't mind adding code (e.g at the start and end of each procedure), as that might generate more useful info than a fully automatic system. I am not sure if the solution ought to "phone home" or if it is enough to produce a text file which can be emailed to me. Any suggestions?

• How to flush coverage data when my test cause app crash - For ios app

  I want to get the code coverage of my tests. So I set the settings, build an app with .gcno files and run it on simulator. It can get the coverage data successfully if there is no crash issue. But if the app crashed, I will get nothing. So how can I get the code coverage data when the app crash? In my thought, this is because it will not call __gcov_flush() method when app crash. I only add app does not run in background to my plist file, so __gcov_flush() is called only at the time I press Home button. Is there any way to call __gcov_flush() before the app crash?
