• Problem fetching contacts from Yahoo! Address Book using PHP's CURL.

  Hi I had to get the user's yahoo address book using PHP's CURL when user gave login name and password. It was working fine. Address book has been got as CSV format. But now suddenly things are stop working. I am just getting some yahoo's html code instead of CSV format. I am guessing that yahoo is somehow restricted fetching address book using CURL. I did one experiment that I manually did the import contacts from Yahoo service. Before importing contacts yahoo shown the CAPTCHA to verify. I guess this CAPTCHA mechanism is recently added. Is this CAPTCHA mechanism preventing to get the address book when I am using PHP's CURL? Actually I do not want get address book using Yahoo OAuth or BBAuth. Any one have idea?

• How can I export images from MS SQL Server to a file on disk?

  I have a User table that has all of their avatars saved in an image field. I'd like to just take that out of the database and store it as a regular file on disk. I looked around and saw some code for textcopy, but that doesn't seem to be on my machine for some reason. Here is the code I wrote up anyway. Anyone know a way to get this done? • Compact representation of GUID/UUID?

  I need to generate a GUID and save it via a string representation. The string representation should be as short as possible as it will be used as part of an already-long URL string. Right now, instead of using the normal abcd-efgh-... representation, I use the raw bytes generated and base64-encode them instead, which results in a somewhat shorter string. But is it possible to make it even shorter? I'm OK with losing some degree of uniqueness and keeping a counter, but scanning all existing keys is not an option. Suggestions?

• Connect rails application to SQL Server 2005 from Windows

  Hi guys. I (sadly) have to deploy a rails application on Windows XP which has to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Surfing in the web there are a lot of hits for connect from Linux to SQL Server, but cannot find out how to do it from Windows. Basically I followed these steps: Install dbi gem Install activerecord-sql-server-adapter gem My database.yml now looks like this: development: adapter: sqlserver mode: odbc dsn: test_dj host: HOSTNAME\SQLEXPRESS database: test_dj username: guest password: guest But I'm unable to connect it. When I run rake db:migrate I get IM002 (0) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified I'm not a Windows user, so cannot understand really well the meaning of dsn element or so. Does someone have an idea how to solve this?   Consider the following method signature: public static bool TryGetPolls(out List<Poll> polls, out string errorMessage) This method performs the following: accesses the database to generate a list of Poll objects. returns true if it was success and errorMessage will be an empty string returns false if it was not successful and errorMessage will contain an exception message. Is this good style? Update: Lets say i do use the following method signature: public static List<Poll> GetPolls() and in that method, it doesn't catch any exceptions (so i depend the caller to catch exceptions). How do i dispose and close all the objects that is in the scope of that method? As soon as an exception is thrown, the code that closes and disposes objects in the method is no longer reachable.

• Simple way to return anonymous types (to make MVC using LINQ possible)

  I'd like to implement MVC while using LINQ (specifically, LINQ-to-entities). The way I would do this is have the Controller generate (or call something which generates) the result-set using LINQ, then return that to the View to display the data. The problem is, if I do: return (from o in myTable select o); All the columns are read from the database, even the ones (potentially dozens) I don't want. And - more importantly - I can't do something like this: return (from o in myTable select new { o.column }); because there is no way to make anonymous types type-safe! I know for sure there is no nice, clean way of doing this in 3.5 (this is not clean...), but what about 4.0? Is there anything planned, or even proposed? Without something like duck-typing-for-LINQ, or type-safe anonymous return values (it seems to me the compiler should certainly be capable of that), it appears to be nearly impossible to cleanly separate the Controller from the View.

It should be http://my.domain.com/feeds/latest/. For now, I am using a hack to generate the URL for the template: <a href="http://{{ request.META.HTTP_HOST }}/feeds/latest">RSS feeds</a> But, as you can see, it clearly is not DRY. Is there something I am missing?

  I want to write a MySQL statement like: SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (value1, value2, value3, ...) The trick here is that I do not know ahead of time how many values there will be in the IN(). Obviously I know I can generate the query on the go with string manipulations, however since this will run in a loop, I was wondering if I could do it with a PDO PreparedStatement. Something like: $query = $PDO->prepare('SELECT * FROM someTable WHERE someId IN (:idList)'); $query->bindValue(':idList', implode(',', $idArray)); Is that possible?

• Ant build.xml requires user input, but Eclipse has no tty

  I'm trying to better integrate Eclipse with my build.xml. My build file calls GNU Make for the native portion of the program, and the Makefile uses sudo to movethe compiled libs into system path. Unfortunately that requires entering a password, and Eclipse's terminal doesn't accept user input. So the result from running the build in eclipse is: [exec] sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified [exec] make: *** [install] Error 1 Any way around this problem? Can the ant build be elevated to root some other way?

  If you look at the call stack of a program and treat each return pointer as a token, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for the valid states of the program? As a corollary, what kind of automata is needed to build a recognizer for a specific bug state? My thought is that if these form regular languages than some interesting tools could be built around that. E.g. given a set of crash/failure dumps, automatically group them and generate a recognizer to identify new instances of know bugs.

  I was using sandcastle to generate help for my project in visual studio 2008. When i change my project to visual studio 2010 and change the project .NET version to .NET 4.0 i got this problem with Sandcastel. I can't understand why sandcastel is using C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5\MSBuild.exe and not C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0\MSBuild.exe thinking that i specified as framework version the v4.0.30319 Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue??   For what I've read I need Python-Dev, how do I install it on OSX? I think the problem I have, is, my Xcode was not properly installed, and I don't have the paths where I should. • ASP.NET login control - can I add the FailureText as an item in a ValidationSummary?

  I'm currently working with the ASP.NET login control. I can set a custom failure text and I can add a literal on the page where the failure text is displayed if the login fails. I also have a validation summary on the page in which I collect all errors that can occur (for the moment it just validates that the user has entered a login name and a password. It would be really nice if I could add the failure text of the login control as an item in the validation summary, but I'm not sure if this is even possible? • A rails migration that specifies the distance between two months..?

  I would like to make two drop downs. a start time, and an end time. Specifically, I only need months. I would like to, for example, choose January, and then March, and then have the database read that it is the these two months plus February. Is there any out of the box migration that could work? • Soft Shadows in Raytracing 3D to 2D

  Hello: I wish to implement soft shadows produced by area lights in my raytracer. I'm having trouble generating the random samples. So I have a scene in which I have an area light (represented as a circle) whose world (x,y,z) coordinates of the center are given, the radius is given, the normal of the plane on which the circle lies is given, as well as the color and attenuation factors. The sampling scheme I wish to use is the following: generate samples on the quadrilateral that encompasses the circle and discard points outside the circle until the required number of samples within the circle have been found. I'm having trouble understanding how I can transform the 3D coordinates of the center of the circle to its 2D representation (I don't think I can assume that the projection of the circle is on the x-y axis and thus just get rid of the z-component). I think the plane normal information should be used but I'm not sure how. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

  Suppose I have a VC++ project contains no of(say e.g 5) Source files(.cpp files),it will generate 5 .obj files(obj files corresponding to my .cpp's files not all kernel and OS layers including .obj files) e.g my project includes xyz_1.cpp,xyz_2.cpp,xyz_3.cpp,xyz_4.cpp,it will corresponds 4 respective .objs. By programtaically HOW CAN I TAKE AND GET THE NAMES OF THESE 4 .OBJ files at runtime(On run time I need to check how many obj files & names of those objs). REMEMBER I DON'T NEED ALL KERNEL AND OS LAYER .OBJS I ONLY NEED OBJS OF MY .CPPs. Regards Usman

• Precomputed Kernels with LibSVM in Python

  I've been searching the net for ~3 hours but I couldn't find a solution yet. I want to give a precomputed kernel to libsvm and classify a dataset, but: How can I generate a precomputed kernel? (for example, what is the basic precomputed kernel for Iris data?) In the libsvm documentation, it is stated that: For precomputed kernels, the first element of each instance must be the ID. For example, samples = [[1, 0, 0, 0, 0], [2, 0, 1, 0, 1], [3, 0, 0, 1, 1], [4, 0, 1, 1, 2]] problem = svm_problem(labels, samples) param = svm_parameter(kernel_type=PRECOMPUTED) What is a ID? There's no further details on that. Can I assign ID's sequentially? Any libsvm help and an example of precomputed kernels really appreciated.

• MVC using LINQ? - Can't return anonymous types

  I'd like to implement MVC while using LINQ (specifically, LINQ-to-entities). The way I would do this is have the Controller generate (or call something which generates) the result-set using LINQ, then return that to the View to display the data. The problem is, if I do: return (from o in myTable select o); All the columns are read from the database, even the ones (potentially dozens) I don't want. And - more importantly - I can't do something like this: return (from o in myTable select new { o.column }); because there is no way to make anonymous types type-safe! I know for sure there is no nice, clean way of doing this in 3.5 (this is not clean...), but what about 4.0? Is there anything planned, or even proposed? Without something like duck-typing-for-LINQ, or type-safe anonymous return values (it seems to me the compiler should certainly be capable of that), it appears to be nearly impossible to cleanly separate the Controller from the View.
