  I'm having a hard time with a "stuck" left shift key. my sister complained she is getting symbols instead of numbers using her netbook. after some time I fired up the on screen keyboard (winr+r"osk") and to my surprise, the left shift key was in some kind of toggle mode. since then I'm trying to inject registry keys to disable accessibility futures like stickykeys etc. to no avail. tough luck all http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/Windows-vista/disable-the-irritating-sticky-filter-keys-popup-dialogs/ check box are disabled What's going on?   My home dishwasher started making some really interesting noises. It was time to shop. I heard radio advertisements from two retailers who promised to meet any competitor's price. Then, another retailer promised that their everyday prices beat their competitors. That got me to thinking about the power of pricing and promotions in the marketing mix (product, price, placement, promotions, and people). What is more powerful to say in a competitive market: your company will meet a similar offer, or your company will beat the others? Will you sell more if you meet or if you beat? I found that the retailer who promised to beat the others really had the best everyday pricing. I was close to making a purchase. Then, another retailer had an exclusive promotional sale for long-term customers. Their loyalty promotion beat the best everyday discounter. So, I got the quality and performance I wanted at a tremendous price. So, I have two challenges for marketers. First, where you really have to compete on price as a dominant factor, give people strong reasons to do business with you. If you try to meet other's prices, make the leap to actually beat and not merely meet competitor prices. Second, upgrade your firm's capabilities where needed.   I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet computer, with a plain SATA drive inside. I have windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting on the computer. I want to back up both of these OS's, and their special partitions (Windows 7 has one, and of course the Linux Swap). I want a one-to-one backup, all of my mission critical data is already backed up, but I would like to get a snapshot, and store it on a larger file server at home for quick recovery. What is the best approach to do this?

  Okay so i'm learning html right now and soon css. My question is this, when I click on a link on this site (this site being this code) I get an a error saying this webpage is not found, but of course. But how do I create it so I can have the web pages working together? I'm not sure how to word it correctly. Like, do I create another .html file in the same directory so somehow when I click the link it reads from the second .html file? • Webkit based browsers on Mac refuse to load certain websites or resources, other browsers work fine from the same machine

  OK, this one has really been puzzling me. Certain websites (such as instapaper.com ) or certain resources (such as the CSS and images for icanhazcheezeburger.com sites) refuse to load at all in Safari or Chrome on any of my Mac machines. Rebooting the machine doesn't fix it. If I use another browser, such as Firefox or a browser on my iPhone or in my Windows virtual machine, the pages load just fine. When the whole page errors out, Safari displays an error: "WebKit encountered an internal error" WebKitErrorDomain:300 This is all from within my home network. Any ideas what could possibly be causing such bizarre behavior?

• IIS in VirtualBox serving files from shared Ubuntu folder

  Here's the problem: I want to use Ubuntu. But I need to develop ASP.NET (MVC) sites. So I setup VirtualBox with Win2003 and IIS6. But I would prefer my working files to be located in my Ubuntu home folder. So I setup shared folder in VirtualBox and make IIS6 virtual directory work from there. The problem is, IIS6 can't do this. Whatever I try (mapped drive, network uri path) I get different IIS errors: can't access folder (for mapped drive), can't monitor file system changes (\vboxsvr share path), and so on. Is there a way for IIS6 in virtual machine to configure virtual application folder to be on host machine (Ubuntu) - be it shared folder, mapped drive, smb share, or whatever?

• SOHO NETGEAR wireless router disconnects when downloading torrents

  I have a NETGEAR WGT624 wireless router at home which dies when there is a heavy torrent load. I open up my torrent client and it downloads for about 5 to 10 minutes and it continues to increase the number of seeds (goes up to 70-80 seeds), but after that the router simply fails and I have to restart it in order to get an internet connection again. When I connect directly via an ethernet cable the router and open up the torrent client, then it seems to be doing fine, but when I go wireless then the router stops working properly (although all the lights are still blinking as normal). Is there any way that I can fix this? New router firmware? Change some router options? Feed it a cookie? Anything?

• unity top menu keyboard shortcuts for desktop alone, no programs running

  Alt+F1 accesses the launcher menu, with arrow keys to navigate the list (side menu). Alt+F10 accesses the top bar in an open application (or Alt+an underlined menu item letter), which allows access to the global ubuntu settings in the top right (battery, wifi/networking, audio, time/calendar, user, power). Alt+F10, when no application is open and you're just staring at the desktop, accesses those ubuntu settings immediately. But the top menu bar does list, in the top left, menu commands for the desktop per se (create new folder, go home, help, start server, etc). These can be accessed only by mouse hovering and click. No way to get to them only by keyboard (arrow keys just cycle through the settings, don't jump over to the left side of the top bar). Is there a keyboard shortcut way to access the desktop menu bar for manipulating icons on your desktop and other general things? Or is this a work in progress for unity? If you use the context menu key (or some equivalent you've set to generate that signal) along with other shortcuts for working on the desktop, you can cover most of the functionality of the top menu bar. However, I don't want to memorize those keys to become proficient. I just want a way to open and browse through those menu items (and they aren't ALL available through hotkeys anyway).

• Properly force SSL with .htaccess, no double authentication

  I'm trying to force SSL with .htaccess on a shared host. This means there I only have access to .htaccess and not the vhosts config. I know you can put a rule in the VirtualHost config file to force SSL which will be picked up there (and acted upon first), preventing double authentication, but I can't get to that. Here's the progress I've made: Config 1 This works pretty well but it does force double authentication if you visit http://site.com - once for http and then once for https. Once you are logged in, it automatically redirects http://site.com/page1.html to the https coutnerpart just fine: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !(^www\.site\.com*)$ RewriteRule (.*) https://www.site.com$1 [R=301,L] AuthName "Locked" AuthUserFile "/home/.htpasswd" AuthType Basic require valid-user Config 2 If I add this to the top of the file, it works a lot better in that it will switch to SSL before prompting for the password: SSLOptions +StrictRequire SSLRequireSSL SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} eq "site.com" ErrorDocument 403 https://site.com It's clever how it will use the SSLRequireSSL option and the ErrorDocument403 to redirect to the secure version of the site. My only complaint is that if you try and access http://site.com/page1.html it will redirect to https://site.com/ So it is forcing SSL without a double-login, but it is not properly forwarding non-SSL resources to their SSL counterparts. Regarding the first config, Insyte mentioned "using mod_rewrite to perform a simple redirect is a bit of overkill. Use the Redirect directive instead. It's possible this may even fix your problem, as I believe mod_rewrite rules are some of the last directives to be processed, just before the file is actually grabbed from the filesystem" I have not had no such luck on finding a force-ssl config option with the redirect directive and so have been unable to test this theory.

• DNS hijack - prevention tips

  Hi there, Over the weekend it looks like the DNS was hijacked on two of my domains. My set up is I have the sites registered on 1and1.co.uk, with dns nameservers pointing to Hostgator in the US where the sites are hosted. I also had cloudflare CDN running on the sites (via hostgator cpanel). My question is any ideas as to how this happened, and how I could either monitor it so I know if it occurs again, or strengthen the set up/service to minimise the risk. History: I received a ping from my site monitoring service that the sites were down. When I checked the sites were up so I assumed it was local to the monitoring service I received a ping last night the sites were up When I checked, one site was redirecting to download-manual.com (and checking that URL now, the home page is not the same as the one I saw, so they too may have been hijacked/hacked) The other site URL remained the same but had one of those standard site search pages which bounce you off to either phishing or paid for search sites I notified Hostgator who told me Cloudflare or 1and1 were the issue. I removed cloudflare, and contacted both them and hostgator, and am awaiting a response, but am not holding my breath. Is this common? I've never heard of this or come across this before. It's pretty scary that this can happen so easily. Appreciate any input. **Update: I've now spoken to support at 1and1, Hostgator, and Cloudflare, and each one claims it has nothing to do with them, and must be one of the others. Larry, curly, moe.

A couple books have come across just recently and I thought I’d mention them one at a time. The book I want to mention tonight is Microsoft Silverlight 4 Business Application Development: Beginner’s Guide : by Cameron Albert and Frank LaVigne. Cameron and Frank are both great guys and you’ve seen their blog posts come across my SilverlightCream posts many times. I like the writing and format of the book. It leads you quite well from one concept to the next and for a technical book, it holds your interest. You can check out a free chapter here. I have the eBook because for technical material, at least lately, I’ve gravitated toward that. I can have it with me on a USB stick at work, or at home. Read the free chapter then check out their blogs. Even if you think you know a lot of this material, I think you’ll find yourself learning something, and besides, it’s a great one-place reference. • Windows 7 and XP Networking

  I'm trying to setup a home network between a windows 7 and windows xp machine. I have a small hub. My XP computer has a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.10) and I set my Windows 7 machine to have a manually assigned IP address (192.168.0.15). The XP computer works, but the Windows 7 machine does not see the network. It says that there is no connectivity. Ping does not work from either machine. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  I think I have an issue with gnome-network-manager, I used to have a lot of connections configured, Wireless, Wired and VPN. After upgrading to 12.04 (from 11.10) I lost every configuration. I realized that the configs that used to be saved in $HOME/.gconf/system/networking/connections now are being saved in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/. • Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

  I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

• How do I transition from WUBI to a native installation?

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed through wubi on my laptop (it came with Windows 7 preinstalled). This was my first foray into Linux, and I'm here to stay. I have no use for Windows, and yet I must manually choose not to boot into it! Should I shrink the Windows partition to something negligible and grow the Linux one using something like gparted or fdisk, and just be content that everything runs? In that case, I need to understand the filesystems. Which is which?   Hi, I have a wifi network at home with a couple of laptops. I am running a Tapestry webapp on my machine. I can access this webapp from the other laptop if I use the IP address of my machine (I mean enter something like : http://192.168.1.53:8080/webapp/index.html). Now, I also want to access the same webapp through my iPodTouch which is also in this wifi network. However, when I try to do so in Safari on iPodTouch, it fails. The typical configuration of the system is as follows: Pentium 4 with HT & 512 MB RAM, 40/80 GB IDE / SATA HDD. In windows there were several partitions and data on all the drives in all the systems. We have addressed this by taking backup of the C: drive on other drives & while installing Ubuntu we have just deleted & the C drive & recreated Linux partitions as follows - /root , /Boot, /Home & Swap.(in 10 GB) The problem is that the Linux gets installed without any error. However when I restart the system after the installation the system hangs in while detecting the HDD in BIOS and the system fails to start until I remove the HDD. When I installed the previous Ubuntu version it worked fine, without any hassle. Also if we install Ubuntu 12.04 on same HDD on any other higher capacity system & reconnected to old system it works fine. How can I fix this problem? Also, is there is any Antivirus which will give me real time protection on ubuntu 11 & higher versions with both 32 & 64 Bits?

• Toggle between open Tabs in Internet Explorer

  I have multiple tabs open in IE 8 (OS is Windows 7 Home Premium). Let us name the tabs as T1, T2, T3, ... , T7 I am currently on T7. What do I do if I want to toggle between Tab T4 and T7? Alt + Tab - Switches between different apps that are open. Ctrl + Tab - Cycles through the different tabs that are open in the current Window. What I want is something like we have in Visual Studio. Irrespective of how the documents are opened, a Ctrl + Tab always toggles between the last two files opened. Is it possible in IE 8.0?
