• How to show alerts from the application when it is not running?

  Hi, I have an application in which I have to show the alerts for user specied reminders, I am able to show these reminders when my application is running but my problem is i have to show thsese reminders to the user when my application is not running? is it possible to show the alerts or remindsers when the application is running? what i obsered in iphone native applications(messages, emails) it whill show no of unread or new messages at the top right tip of the icon on the desktop and it will keep on updates these count. Can I impplement these king of alerts to my applications? if yes how? it not is there any other to show the alerts when application is not running?

  It is known that when you create a shortcut and place it in the desktop or program menu directory in a VS setup project, you should also set an icon for it. If not, the default icon will be displayed. However it is natural to think that icons to the files of the registered type (such as pdf, txt, doc, etc.), should be taken from the OS after installation. What I want: What I get: How to implement this? PS: Of course, I can get the pdf and txt icons from somewhere, add them to the VS project and set to the shortcuts, but I believe that there should be a better solution.

  Basically, I am diving ever deeper into complex programming practices. I've almost no friends that are experienced (or more experienced than me) programmers to learn from, so I am looking for the next best thing - learning from the work of strangers. Can anyone recommend a real world finished and working application written well and OOP-centered. I'd like to take and analyze its source. Bonus if it's based on Zend Framework. What I am interested most in is objects that unlike desktop applications, have only one real operation done to them (or to their representation in DB or session) during their lifetime (or pageload), like user-logIn(). I'm interested in optimal and reusable design patterns and their real life implementations.

  I am developing a Java Desktop Application and designing the GUI with the help of Netbeans Swing GUI builder. I want to use a JSpinner in my app. I have dragged and dropped it to a JPanel. Now, I want to set its two properties: First, It should display numbers in the range of 1 to 50. Neither less than 1 nor greater than 50. How can I set that range? Second, when I try to get the value of it by spinner.getValue() it returns an Object. As my spinner's data type is Integer, would it be better to downcast the Object into Integer or Is there any other way to get that numeric value?

• Writable folder by all users on the same pc

  I have a desktop .NET WPF application witch uses an embedded database (SQLite). Where to put the database file ? It's the same database for all users. I tried to use CommonAppData but it's not writable by non-admin users. So I tried to use a custom installer action to give write rights to all users to this folder but it fails on domain PCs. The code is: DirectorySecurity security = Directory.GetAccessControl(appDataPath); FileSystemAccessRule rule = new FileSystemAccessRule("Users", FileSystemRights.WriteData, InheritanceFlags.ContainerInherit | InheritanceFlags.ObjectInherit, PropagationFlags.InheritOnly, AccessControlType.Allow); security.AddAccessRule(rule); Directory.SetAccessControl(appDataPath, security); Would ".\Users" insead of "Users" work on a domain ? Is this the best approach ? Is there any other folder I could use ?

• C++/CLI value class constraint won't compile. Why?

  Hello, a few weeks ago a co-worker of mine spent about two hours finding out why this piece of C++/CLI code won't compile with Visual Studio 2008 (I just tested it with Visual Studio 2010... same story). public ref class Test { generic<class T> where T : value class void MyMethod(Nullable<T> nullable) { } }; The compiler says: Error 1 error C3214: 'T' : invalid type argument for generic parameter 'T' of generic 'System::Nullable', does not meet constraint 'System::ValueType ^' C:\Users\Simon\Desktop\Projektdokumentation\GridLayoutPanel\Generics\Generics.cpp 11 1 Generics Adding ValueType will make the code compile. public ref class Test { generic<class T> where T : value class, ValueType void MyMethod(Nullable<T> nullable) { } }; My question is now.   Hi all, This is may not be a true programming question but deals with geolocation Api, hence hoping StackOverflow is the right place for this. I'm calling the navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition at every 3 seconds interval. After 10-15 tries the responses stop. So i'm wondering is there a limit on the number of calls being made, Or is it because i'm testing it with a desktop and hence instead of giving back the same response each time the API is waiting for a change of location. • Is vbscripting that difficult?

  I need to write some vbscripts in my new project. I was told by other people that vbscripting is easy, but seems to me, it is not. For example, in the following example (provided by microsoft), these functions: CreateObject, CreateShortcut, as well as these property names: TargetPath, WindowStyle, Hotkey, etc, are used, but I just cannot find the corresponding API documentation about how to use them. In other words, how do you know you need to call these functions in your vbscripts? Visual Studio 2008/2010 do not have templates for vbscript either. • ASP.NET - remote screenshot

  Hi All, I made a very very simple small app to take screenshot of the desktop and send to network share. About 10 PC's would have this app installed. My idea is, that there will be one dashboard in ASP.NET, which simply shows those screenshots on the webpage. So far, easy stuff. But, because I don't want to clog the network and send the screenshot every 1 minute, I would like to launch the .exe on the remote PC's by demand of ASP.NET user. Unfortunately I haven't found any information (and I'm a complete ASP.NET n00b), how to launch remote executable IN the context of the remote PC (so I won't see screenshots of ASP server :) ) If there is no such possibility, please advise about other way to solve this.

• Can I use Blender to create 3D wall image viewer application under Linux?

  Hi, Is that possible to use Blender to create Cooliris-like 3D wall image viewer application under Linux? I don't see many people use Blender (BGE) to create desktop application, so I am wondering if this is possible. People normally use Blender for modeling/movie and game engine. I can not find a good way to create 3D application in Linux so far. I was thinking about pyQT+opengl. But I feel that is hard to do. No robust and easy-to-use qt+opengl toolkit available from my research. I know a little bit of Blender, that's why I am asking if Blender is an alternative solution. (python is preferred) The image viewer doesn't have to be windowed. It can be full screen, like a game?. I would like to add many cool effects into this application. Hopefully cooler than Cooliris which is written in flash. Thanks a lot.

User clicks something in view 2. this is passed on to controller to manage 3. controller makes some changes in Model 4. Model calls method on view which has the logic to refresh UI Questions around these: Q1) Can controller also modify View or Model only updates View? Q2) When screen loads for the first time, there is no Model change. Then, who fetches data from model and populates view? View directly calls Model and populates itself OR controller gets data and passes to view method OR some dummy event is raised at Model which updates View?

• Problem with loading compiled c code in R x64 using dyn.load

  I recently went from a 32bit laptop to a 64bit desktop (both win7). I just found out that I get an error now when loading dll's using dyn.load. I guess this is a simple mistake and I am overlooking something. For example, I write this simple c function (foo.c): void foo( int *x) {*x = *x + 1;} Then compile it in command prompt: R CMD SHLIB foo.c Then in 32bit R I can use it in R: > setwd("R") > dyn.load("foo.dll") > .C("foo",as.integer(1)) [[1]] [1] 2 but in 64bit R I get: > dyn.load("foo.dll") Error in inDL(x, as.logical(local), as.logical(now), ...) : unable to load shared object 'C:/Users/Sacha/Documents/R/foo.dll': LoadLibrary failure: %1 is not a valid Win32 application. nd.

• Serving protected files using Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect header

  I'm trying to serve protected files using this directive in my nginx.conf: location /secure/ { internal; alias /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/; } I'm passing in paths in the form: "/myfile.doc" and the file's path would be: /home/ldr/webapps/nginx/app/secure/myfile.doc I just get 404's when I access "http: //myserver/secure/myfile.doc" (space inserted after http to stop ServerFault converting it to a link) I've tried taking the trailing / off the location directive and that makes no difference. Two questions: How do I fix it! How can I debug problems like this myself? How can I get Nginx to report which path it's looking for? error.log shows nothing and access.log just tells me which url is being requested - this is the bit I already know! It's no fun trying things randomly without any feedback. Not sure what that signifies but it didn't work either!

SimpleDB provides an HTTP interface to data. Rather than having to write a proxy that sits inbetween SimpleDB and the client, is it possible for client software (i.e. desktop, mobile) to make calls to read values from a SimpleDB domain, without sharing credentials that shouldn't be shared? Or is a proxy in-between the only way to go?

The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons.   I have made a Java Swing Desktop application in Netbeans which can play media files I have put the videos in my workspace resources location and in my java program I am calling those media files using an URL which is something like this: C:/users/Dell/My Documents /NetBeansProjects/Media/src/resources/ MediaFiles/ddd.mpg This works well when I run in my IDE and also i have made Jar for this it works well on my computer but the problem is when i copy this jar file on my friends system the interface is coming but when I click a button to play a media file it says: C:/users/Dell/MyDocuments/NetBeansProjects/Media/src/resources/ MediaFiles/ddd.mpg does not exist So, please provide me a solution of how to set the default path so that when I run a jar file on other systems it should play the media file location I am passing as in my program. How to set the path for the location of media files in program? Update The videos are in the jar file.

• Facebook like box not working on mobile browser

  I'm writing a simple splash page for a client to hold a like box widget: <iframe src="http://www.facebook.com/plugins/likebox.php?id=***********&amp;width=238&amp;connections=4&amp;stream=false&amp;header=false&amp;height=200" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="border:none; overflow:hidden; width:238px; height:200px;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe> The page displays fine, with the like box, but when you click on the like it depresses without prompting the user to logon and does not update facebook. This behavior seems to be on mobile browsers only. On desktop browsers (ie8, firefox, safari) it works just fine. Anyone had this happen, and if so what was their solution?

• Cannot add an icon to Resources

  Have been inputting and testing some sample code and everything seems to be ok. Just that suddenly I am running into this very frustrating problem of trying to add an icon to the project. Have downloaded an icon file (extension : icns) to my desktop and dragged it to the "Resources" group in xCode. Then a dialogue comes up from xCode where I checked the 2 options : "Copy items into destination group's folder (if needed)" and "Recursively create groups for any added folders". But when I press the "Add" button, an "Alert" message box would come up. It says "Could not copy the icon to ...". Hope that someone knowledgable in this area would give me some hints...
