• Turn off the display on remote PC

  Hello. I'm fixing some bugs in the application for remote control (remote desktop-like) for Windows. And there is a feature that you can blank screen on remote machine - all the programms keep running unaffected, but the person who looks into the display on remote PC sees nothing but black screen. It is implemented by sending IoCtl request IOCTL_VIDEO_SET_OUTPUT_DEVICE_POWER_STATE, which is undocumented. And this request does not work on Vista and above. Are there another ways to do what I want? In fact, SendMessage(-1,WM_SOMMAND,SC_MONITORPOWER,2) does the trick, but screen turns back on if someone toches keyboard/mouse.

• How to show and hide preferences on Android dynamically?

  Is there a way to dynamically show and hide preferences? In my case, I have a checkbox preference that would disable or enable one of 2 preference groups ("with-" and "without-handicap" groups). While this would be the ideal GUI in a desktop environment, the "with-handicap" takes up nearly the whole screen, while the other, "without-handicap" takes up only a small portion of the screen. Rather than showing both groups at the same time, I'd like to show only one of them at a time, and dynamically show or hide the 2 groups when the checkbox changes. Is there a way to do this?

  When working remotely, our team only has access to our source code by remote desktop into our office PCs so we never really work in offline mode. Does a distributed version control system like Mercurial or Git still give us advantages over our current centralized Subversion set up? If so, what are they? Are there any drawbacks or pitfalls? I've read in numerous places that shifting to distributed version control requires a change in thinking. Can someone explain what needs to change in this regard?

The problem is, I don't want to stay logged into the remote machine. Is there a way to automatically launch the debugger, similar to what happens when I attach through the IDE?

• GPU Computing - # of GPUs supported

  I currently have a desktop with 6 GPUs ( 3x HD 5970s ) in non-crossfire mode. Unfortunately, it seems that Windows 7 64bit only supports up to 4 GPUs. I have not been able to find a reliable source to deny or confirm this. If windows 7 has this limitation, is there a Linux flavor that supports more than 4 GPUs? In-case you are wondering, this is not for gaming but high-speed single precision computing. With this current setup ( if I can find 6gpu support ) I am looking to reach 13.8 Teraflops. Also, my motherboard does support 3 16x pci-xpress gen2 slots... and I have a 1500w powersupply plugged into a 20amp outlet. Windows is able to detect all 6 cores.. although, 2 of which displays the warning "Drivers failed to load". To recap: - Can windows support 6 GPUs? - If not, does Linux? Thank you.

• Linux application that bundles multiple incoming audio and video streams into one container file?

  I've been assigned to implement a video on-demand service for a local university. Different aspects of the lectures (video, audio, screen cast, white board) will be recorded. During a lecture all these data streams arrive at one Linux server. This server should transcode and bundle all these streams into one container (Matroska) file. My options seem to be: Write a GStreamer application do something with FFMPEG do something with VLC ...? Has anyone done something similar in the past? Can you recommend something? Edit For those interested, here are a few of my findings: Matroska is not a good format for streaming (it's possible, but it's not its primary intent) For Flash streaming you can use MPEG4 If you want to combine different videos into one video where each subvideo occupies a rectangular portion of the total screen, then this GStreamer script is useful (I found it on this blog post).   I am receiving the following error message: An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator. If you are the system administrator please click here to find out more about this error. I have my site in the inetpub directory in a subfolder called website. I have also gone to add/remove windows compononents and had asp installed. In iss manager I have asp listed with defult settings. The initial website page is a classic asp page Has anyone else encountered this issue? Please help! • Running GUI application in the Windows service mode

  I'm writing a server running as a Windows service that by request invokes Firefox to generate a pdf snapshot of a webpage. I know it is a bad idea to run a GUI program in service mode, but the server nature of my program restricts from running it in the user mode. Running a user-level 'proxy' also is not an option, since there might be no interactive user logged-in on the machine with the server running. In my experiments Firefox successfully produced pdf when the service was running under a user account that was already logged-in. Obviously it didn't work in other cases: for Local System and user accounts that weren't logged-in. Under LocalSystem with 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option enabled I could see the Firefox started that reports that it's unable to find a printer. Since it wouldn't be practical to require an opened user session for the pdf server to run, is there any workaround for this except running the whole thing from a virtual machine?

  Hi All, I have created a deployment file(msi) using VS Setup project. This msi file create a shortcut in desktop.During deployment I have added some predefined data files (.xml/text) into it.Application shortcut working fine i.e. it open the application and running fine. But once I delete some data files from installation location, and then click application shortcut, it started installing the application and copied all those files into the original installation location again. For those reasons, web services aren’t covered in this book.However,if you want to branch out and explore the web service world,you can download the web service chapters from the previous edition of this book from the book’s download page.The information in these chapters still applies to ASP.NET 3.5,because the web service feature hasn’t changed. Can someone offer, in "layman's terms" what exactly a web service is and if, indeed, they are being replaced, at least in .Net, with WCF? What would be a practical example of a web service? Are they stand alone programs that run on a web server and are invoked by a client or clients?

  i have oracle11g desktop. For my project I create 3 databases via configuration assistant tools. Then I delete one of them and after this I have the error: ora-12560. By mistake both of my databases have the same pasword, for example: when i want to connect one of these data bases with system user, i have one pasword and perhaps the databases dont know connect which one. I start all services set oracle_sid=orcl. I run lsnrctl tnsping check tansname.ora & my listener.ora and I logon with sysdba@oracle_sid but i have this error again pleas help me tnx

  So I am using the HTML5 date input type, primary to trigger the 'wheels' in iOS. Everything is working fine in ie7-9 Chrome and FF. But Safari for OSX is very upset. It sees the need to add little 'up and down' buttons to the right hand side and generally mess up my visual stylings. My attempt to fix this, is to change the date inputs back to text inputs for desktop browsers, and leave it as date inputs for mobile: unless device.is # 'device' is a lib I use to detect mobile browsers dateFields = $ 'input[type="date"]' dateFields.attr 'type', 'text' #this fails dateFields.datepicker() dateFields.on 'keyup', (e) -> e.preventDefault() $(@).val '' Beyond altering the input type with js, I am at a loss for how to fix this little bugger.   Hi folks, My next project will be all about language tools, parsing and such. Because of that reason I've decided to write a simple language which can be used for video editing. So instead of those desktop applications (Sony vegas, Adobe Premiere, ..) it's basically a language where you define the effects and all and it will generate a video for you. Since I've got no experience in this kind of business I need some help. The goal of the project is to create a simple language which is able to do some basic things (such as text fading in, etc). I am looking for articles/projects/blogs/whatever related with this which could help me writing this language. • Questions about use lib for perl

  I use use lib "./DIR" to grab a library from a folder elsewhere. However, it doesn't seem to work on my server, but it works fine on my local desktop. Any particular reasons? And one more question, does use lib get propagated within several modules? Two situations: Say I make a base class that requires a few libraries, but I know that it needs to be extended and the extended class will need to use another library. Can I put the use lib command in the base class? or will I need to put it in every extending class? Finally, can I just have a use package where package contains a bunch of use lib, will it propagate the use lib statements over to my current module? <-- I don't think so, but asking anyways Thanks in advance! But my problem is I am not able to download from file sharing sites like filesonic, rapidshare, hotfile etc. I want to know how can I get download (actual download) url from these sites, or at least how these sites are hiding this info (and where), so I can get that somehow... Is there any open source library or framework to help me with this? How firefox or other desktop browser get this link? Any help will be much appreciated! • Shortcuts and MSI updates

  We have an installer for application that is compiled using WiX and each version is updated using a new setup package. The installer creates advertised shortcut in Start menu and users often copy this shortcut to desktop or other location. During an application update a major upgrade is performed and the old shortcuts are removed, which causes the ones copied by users to disappear. This causes a major annoyance to the users. Is there a way to update advertised shortcuts when doing MSI major upgrade (ie. different product code)? Or, is there a way to allow minor updates by just running the setup.msi file (without passing a REINSTALLMODE option on the command line)? Or, is the only way to solve this problem to use non-advertised shortcuts?

• Printing from a Windows Service

  Ok, I am trying to print a page from a windows service that I installed using a Visual Studio setup project. At first I set the Account property yo Local System, but it will tell me that there are no printers installed (and there are). So I changed it to user and now it just doesn't print (no error or anything). I did some Googleing and basically it said that "Interact with Desktop" should be enabled. To programatically do this you need to edit the registry settings for this service (which really is second prize). I tried to manually set it on the properties dialog under Services, but then I need to change the Account back to Local System, which brings me back to the "No Printers Installed" problem. Any ideas?
