• What should a Java/SOA developer be able to do?

  I got assigned the task to list the activities a Java Developer should be able to perform and create an estimate about the time it would take. I've came up with the following: Create JDBC CRUD backend ( S=1d, M=5d, H=10d ) Create JSP/Servlet frontend for a CRUD app ( S=1d, M=10d, H=20d ) Create Swing desktop frontend ( S=1d, M=15d, H=30d) Create ORM based CRUD etc. Create Webapp fronend with webframework etc Where.. S = Small complexity M = Medium complexity H = High complexity 1d = 1 day This is thought for a Java "enterprise" developer. The other profile I have is SOA Developer, but I could not pass beyond: Create webservice ( S=.5d, M=2d, H=7d ) Q.- What other activities should a Java Developer be able to do? Q.- What activities should a SOA Developer be able to do? Please, help me with this, I know this is in the limit of the kind of questions that could be asked here, but I really need a little push on this, and I don't want to go to Yahoo Answers for this.

• MOSS Collect Data from user custom email

  Hi, I am trying to send out a custom email, after the Collect Data from user step in my primary workflow which starts when an item in list X is created. I have created a secondary workflow to start when a new Task item is created (this is created by the Collect Data from user action in the primary workflow). But I am having problem how I retrieve the information on the list X. I know the ID of the referenced item in List X is stored in a URL within the "Link" column in the Tasks lists. But can't see any string manipulation function that will grab this ID so I can use it to link back to relevant item in List X. Is there an easier way to do this? Many Thanks, Nav

• Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

  I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

• Cannot loop through Excel 2003 files in SSIS 2008

  Hi, I am trying to execute a SSIS 2008 package on a 64-bit OS and import Excel 2003 files to SQL Server 2008. I have created an OLEDB Connection to the Excel file with a Connection String that retrieves the Excel file from a variable, inside the ForEach Loop Container. The Run64BitRunTime is set to false. I am not able to edit the SQL Command on the OLEDB Source in the Data Flow task. It returns an error : Error 2 Validation error. Load List Staged Table: Load List Staged Table: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "List OLEDB to Excel" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed. 0 0 Appreciate any help.

• How do you do dynamic script evaluation in C#?

  What is the state of dynamic code evaluation in C#? For a very advanced feature of an app I'm working on, I'd like the users to be able to enter a line of C# code that should evaluate to a boolean. Something like: DateTime.Now.Hours > 12 && DateTime.Now.Hours < 14 I want to dynamically eval this string and capture the result as a boolean. I tried Microsoft.JScript.Eval.JScriptEvaluate, and this worked, but it's technically deprecated and it only works with Javascript (not ideal, but workable). Additionally, I'd like to be able to push objects into the script engine so that they can be used in the evaluation. Some resources I find mentioned dynamically compiling assemblies, but this is more overhead than I think I want to deal with. So, what is the state of dynamic script evaluation in C#? Is it possible, or am I out of luck?

  I am using Google Calendar as a storage engine for a calendar system I am building, however, I am using a single Google user account with multiple calendars, i.e. each user on my system has their own calendar within the one user account. I'm able to create a calendar per user just fine, but I would like to have FullCalendar retrieve the events for display purposes, without manually getting the magic cookie url from Google Calendar settings. • NHibernate: uninitialized proxy passed to save() and cascade

  Hi, I keep getting an NHibernate.PersistentObjectException when calling session.Save() which is due to an uninitialized proxy passed to save(). If I fiddle with my cascade settings I can make it go away, but then child objects aren't being saved. The only other fix I have found is by adding the following to my DefaultSaveEventListener. protected override bool ReassociateIfUninitializedProxy(object obj, global::NHibernate.Engine.ISessionImplementor source) { if (!NHibernateUtil.IsInitialized(obj)) NHibernateUtil.Initialize(obj); return base.ReassociateIfUninitializedProxy(obj, source); } This is obviously not an ideal solution.   Hello fellow earthlings. A quesion about RGB color and its usefulness in a simple tiny php code: Imagine I have variable $colorA containning a valid six char color. say B1B100, a greenish natural color. Now If I would like to make a new color from that, which is, say, ten steps lighter thatn that original color, roughly. $colorA = B1B100 // original color php code with little color engine lightening stuff up goes here $colorB = ?????? // original color lightened up Is there a php ready function that KNOWS rgb colors something like php function RGB ( input color, what to do, output color) Where what to do could be +/- 255 values of brightness etc etc. Is something like this already possible or am I day dreaming? rgb($colorA, +10, $colorB) If this does not exist, what would be the shortest code for doing this? • Hibernate constraint ConstraintViolationException. Is there an easy way to ignore duplicate entries?

  Basically I've got the below schema and I'm inserting records if they don't exists. However when it comes to inserting a duplicate it throws and error as I would expect. My question is whether there is an easy way to make Hibernate to just ignore inserts which would in effect insert duplicates? The remote voting units should be as small as possible. What form of data transmission should be used for the voting?   I need to convert mediawiki into LaTeX syntax. The formulas should stay the same, but I need to transform, for example = something = into \chapter{something}. Although this can be obtained with a bit of sed, things get a little dirty with the itemize environment, so I was wondering if a better solution can be produced. Anything that can be useful for this task ? This is the reverse of this question (graciously copied). Pandoc was the answer to that question, but probably not yet for this.

• What tools are people using to measure SQL Server database performance?

  I've experimented with a number of techniques for monitoring the health of our SQL Servers, ranging from using the Management Data Warehouse functionality built into SQL Server 2008, through other commercial products such as Confio Ignite 8 and also of course rolling my own solution using perfmon, performance counters and collecting of various information from the dynamic management views and functions. What I am finding is that whilst each of these approaches has its own associated strengths, they all have associated weaknesses too. I feel that to actually get people within the organisation to take the monitoring of SQL Server performance seriously whatever solution we roll out has to be very simple and quick to use, must provide some form of a dashboard, and the act of monitoring must have minimal impact on the production databases (and perhaps even more importantly, it must be possible to prove that this is the case). So I'm interested to hear what others are using for this task? Any recommendations?

• What are people's opinions vis-a-vis my choice of authorization plugins?

  I'm slowly but surely putting together my first rails app (first web-app of any kind in fact - I'm not really a programmer) and it's time to set up a user registration/login system. The nature of my app is such that each user will be completely separated from each other user (except for admin roles). When users log in they will have their own unique index page looking at only their data which they and no-one else can ever see or edit. However, I may later want to add a role for a user to be able to view and edit several other user's data (e.g. a group of users may want to allow their secretary to access and edit their data but their secretary would not need any data of their own). My plan is to use authlogic to create the login system and declarative authorization to control permissions but before I embark on this fairly major and crucial task I thought I would canvas a few opinions as to whether this combo was appropriate for the tasks I envisage or whether there would be a better/simpler/faster/cheaper/awesomer option.

  Hi, I have a script in python which uses a resource which can not be used by more than a certain amount of concurrent scripts running. Classically, this would be solved by a named semaphores but I can not find those in the documentation of the multiprocessing module or threading . Am I missing something or are named semaphores not implemented / exposed by Python? and more importantly, if the answer is no, what is the best way to emulate one? Thanks, Boaz PS. For reasons which are not so relevant to this question, I can not aggregate the task to a continuously running process/daemon or work with spawned processed - both of which, it seems, would have worked with the python API.

• App only spawns one thread

  I have what I thought was a thread-friendly app, and after doing some output I've concluded that of the 15 threads I am attempting to run, only one does. • How to schedule emails to send out

  Using PHP, I have a query that goes through my DB looking for pending tasks with reminder triggers at certain times of the day. I have a cronjob that runs every 10 mins and checks the DB for any rows that has "remind_me" field set to go off within the next 10 mins. If it does find something, what's the best way to queue an email with the task information? I guess I'll need some sort of message queue system, but how does the email part work? Will I need another cronjob that runs every minute to check the queue system?

• Newbie question - MySQL index size

  I've just started to investigating how I should optimize my database. Indexing seems to be a good idea, so I want to index a VARCHAR column, the engine is MyISAM. From what I've read, I understand that an index is limited to a size of 1000 bytes. A VARCHAR character is 3 bytes in size. Does this mean that if I want to index a VARCHAR column with 50 rows, I need an index prefix of 6 characters? I came to that number by dividing 1000 with the row number 50, then the bytesize per character that is 3. 1000/50/3=6,66. It seems a little complicated, so I'm just wondering if I'm thinking right? It seems weird to me that you'd only be able to index 333 rows in a VARCHAR column, using a prefix of 1 character.

• SFTP transfer file and move file to folder

  Hi all, This is my first post so please excuse my ignorance. I am using a vbscript to zip all .csv type files in a particular folder. After some google searches, I have found a workable vbscript to do this and have enabled a scheduled task to automate this. What I need to do next is to transfer the zip file via sftp and then "move" that zip file into another folder. I believe the former can be achieved using pscp.exe via command line but can someone show me how to do the latter? Basically the zipping will be done twice a day and so it will have a timestamp similar to yyyymmdd0900.zip (for 9am schedule) and yyyymmdd1800.zip (for 6pm schedule). After the transfer, I want to move (not copy) the zip file generated into another folder. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

  Hi, I would like to know if it is functionally wrong to page-fault a user-space address when kernel is running fault-handler to bring in a user-page. OS is Linux 2.6.30 Assume that both user-addresses are valid ( falling within vma , rw permission ) for the task. When I check the kernel code, i find that the kernel does not mind the nested fault if the faulted-addresses are valid and the fault did not occur in atomic-context or in irq handler. (I dont think the answer is cpu-specific, but I would add that i am interested in arm and mips ). eg : The scenario can happen if I print stack-data from page-fault handler. thanks shankar

• C#: standard Windows menu bars in Windows Forms

  I noticed that adding a MenuStrip (from the VS Toolbox) to my form design doesn't yield a menu bar like many native Windows applications. Instead I get a menu bar like VS's own. None of the style settings for MenuStrip appear to mimic the much more common native menu bar. Is there a way to add a menu bar to my Windows Forms application that looks the same as the one you see in Notepad, Task Manager, Windows Explorer and others? (Preferably with the designer, but I wouldn't mind adding it programmatically either.)

  Hi all, I have to make a project to run successfully on a Linux machine. Right now my project works very well on windows machine. On Windows machine it is compiling and working fine. My project is using one ".lib" and one ".dll" file to do the tasks successfully on Windows. Can i use the same .lib file and .dll file on linux machine to build the project successfully? I am compiling the project with G++ and using GNU Makefile to do the task. What should i do in the case that i can not use the .LIB and .DLL file on Linux machine.
