  • Wireless USB Adapter driver configuration

    - by Jones
First I would like agree one thing that this is fully for Ubuntu, not for BackTrack. However I'm posting my BackTrack question here since I find similar problems in backtrack forum are being unanswered and Linux/Unix site of StackExchange has very low attraction. I'm having USB wifi adapter (iBall Baton), having chipset RTL8191SU. It displays available wifi networks in Wicd manager. But while trying to connect it gives me bad password. When I'm trying to run airmon-ng it didn't returned me the monitor mode. I tried to replace with Ubuntu 12.10 drivers. But it totally nulled the device functionality. However I restored the drivers. I'm interested to compile drivers as if anyone indicate the methods. Awaiting ideas!

  • How to get average network load instead of instant

    - by Adam Ryczkowski
Welcome, I use conky to see network load statistics with sampling every 8 seconds in order to get somewhat more smooth history chart. Unfortunately, all values i get are not average for this 8 second period, but they are sampled from much smaller time span, so charts are the same choppy, as if they were sampled from 1 second or less. Is there any way to get conky (or at least System Monitor) display system properties averaged over specified amount of time, just like Windows' task manager does? I would like to have conky display hard drive usage from iostat, but there will be little use if it, if conky reports instant values not averaged over time.

  • Linux Mint Cinamon 17 Qiana, Xfce desktop background problem [on hold]

    - by Serj
I've installed Xfce4 on my laptop which runs Linux Mint 17 with Cinamon default desktop. Everything works OK and I customized my lightweight Xfce, like change menu location and desktop background that it is similar to my Cinamon desktop and used it for a while. Suddenly after last restart my desktop background becomes black and there is no option for desktop background change when I right click on desktop. I should mention that xfdesktop & didn't help, which tells it's already running. Some icons like Computer, Home and Oracle VM that was already there is showing, but my Trash or other icons did not. I've tried everywhere in xfce4-settings-manager but could not get my desktop background back

  • Unity Launcher and Menu Bar disappeared in 14.04

    - by Justice2497
The menu bar and Unity launcher have disappeared in Ubuntu 14.04. Also cannot access the terminal via ctrl + alt + t. I have tried every solution for this issue that I can find, from re-installing untiy and compiz to resetting Unity and everything. I've gone into the compiz manager and reactived Unity. Nothing has worked. When trying to reset Unity, or do anything with it really, I get this message (process:6332): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Could not connect: Connection refused EDIT: Installed 14.04 a day ago. The issue happened after a reboot. After installing virtual Box

  • Microsoft Unveils New Logo

Indeed, with those four familiar colored squares - set in a bigger square rather than standing on a point in a diamond - Microsoft's new corporate logo seems almost inevitable. As you'd expect, the company's name makes up part of the logo, but instead of the thick italic letters it has used for the past two and a half decades, it's in a more standard, lighter font. Jeff Hansen, Microsoft's general manager of brand strategy, notes that the point of the new logo is to signal the heritage but also signal the future - a newness and a freshness. It's very fitting when you consider just how many...

  • Private Cloud: Putting some method behind the madness

    - by Sudip Datta
Finally, I decided to join the blogging community. And what could be a better time to start than the week after OpenWorld 2012. 50K+ attendees, demonstrations, speaker sessions and a whole lot of buzz on Oracle Cloud..It was raining clouds in this year's Openworld. I am not here to write about Oracle's cloud strategy in general, but on Enterprise Manager's cloud management capabilities. This year's Openworld was the first after we announced the 12c Cloud Control and we were happy to share the stage with quite a few early adopters. Stay tuned for videos from our customers and partners, I will post them as they get published. I met a number of platform administrators in Oracle-DBAs, Middleware Admins, SOA Admins...The cloud has affected them all, at least to the point where it beckoned more than just curiosity..Most IT infrastructure are already heavily virtualized (on VMWare and on others including Oracle VM), and some would claim they are already on “cloud” (at least their Sysadmins told them so). But none of them were confident of the benefits because their pain points continued to grow.. Isn't cloud supposed to ease those? Instead, they were chasing hundreds of databases running on hundreds of VMs, often with as much certainty propounded by Heisenberg. What happened to the age-old IT discipline around administration, compliance, configuration management? VMs are great for what they are. I personally think they have opened the doors to new approaches in which an application stack gets provisioned and updated. In fact, Enterprise Manager 12c is possibly the only tool out there that can provision full-fledged application as VM Assemblies. In this year's Openworld, customers talked on how they provisioned RAC and Siebel assemblies, which as the techies out there know, are not trivial (hearing provisioning time for Siebel down from weeks to hours was gratifying indeed). However, I do have an issue with a "one-size fits all" approach to cloud. In a week's span, I met several personas: Project owners requiring an EC2 like VM instance for their projects Admins needing the same for Sparc-Solaris. DBAs requiring dedicated databases for new projects APEX Developers needing just a ready-to-consume schema as a service Java Developers looking for a runtime platform QA engineers needing a fast clone of their production environment If you drill down further, you will end up peeling more layers of the details. For example, the requirements for Load testing and Functional testing are very different. For Load testing the test environment should ideally be the same as the production. You shouldn't run production on Exadata and load test on a VM; they will just not be good representations of one another. For Functional testing it does not possibly matter. DBAs seem to be at the worst affected of the lot. It seems they have been asked to choose between agile provisioning and  faster runtime performance. And in some cases, it is really a Hobson's choice, because their infrastructure provider made no distinction between the OLTP application and the Virtual desktop! Sad indeed. When one looks at the portfolio of services that we already offer (vanilla IaaS, VM Assembly based PaaS, DBaaS) or have announced (Java PaaS, Instant Cloning, Schema-aaS), one can possibly think that we are trying to be the "renaissance man" ! Well I would have possibly digested that had it not been for the various personas that I described above. Getting the use cases right is very important for an application such as cloud management. We iterate and iterate over these over and over again and re-validate them in CABs (Customer Advisory Boards). We consider over the major aspects of tenancy: service placement, resource isolation (can a tenant execute an expensive SQL and run away with all the resources), quota and security. We, in Engineering, keep reminding ourselves that we are dealing with enterprise clouds. We owe it to our customer base ! In the coming posts, I will drill down more into each of the services. In the meanwhile, here are some collateral and  demos for starters with EM 12c. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/cloud-mgmt/index.html Sudip Datta The views expressed here are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Oracle. • Nautilus only starts as root user

    - by user7978
Hello. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. When I attempt to start Nautilus from the command line, it does not appear -- although a PID is generated. As root/sudo, I can start Nautilus fine. One note: I run e16 as the windows manager, so I do not use Nautilus to draw my desktop. However, even under this configuration, Nautilus used to run fine as a "regular" user. The permissions for Nautilus are the same as the other packages in /usr/bin. I believe this is a Gnome issue, but I'm fumbling at this point.

  • Castle Windsor Dependency Injection with MVC4

    - by Renso
Problem:Installed MVC4 on my local and ran a MVC3 app and got an error where Castle Windsor was unable to resolve any controllers' constructor injections. It failed with "No component for supporting the service....".As soon as I uninstall MVC4 beta, the problem vanishes like magic?!I also tried to upgrade to NHibernate 3 and Castle and Castle Windsor to version 3 (from version 2), but since I use Rhino Commons, that is not possible as the Rhino Commons project looks like is no longer supported and requests to upgrade it to work with NHibernate version 3 two years ago has gone unanswered. The problem is that Rhino Commons (the older version) references a method in Castle version 2 that has been depreciated in version 3: "CreateContainer("windsor.boo")' threw an exception of type 'System.MissingMethodException."Hope this helps anyone else who runs into this issue. Btw I used NuGet package manager to install the correct packages so I know that is not the issue.

  • Website inheritance of ownership question

    - by Adrian Denham
I paid for a web site for my motel business, then due to my landlord actions I was placed in a position to file for bankrupcy. I asked my IT manager and web developer to close down the web site for the business. He has since then sold my web site to the new owners. I took all the photos myself and I am in at least 4 of the photos on the site. There are no changes to the site as I left it and it now states that it is under the copyright on the new owners? I am not sure what I should do as this happen 10 months ago and I have just found this out. Thank you for your help, I am in Australia.

  • How To Upgrade Wine from 1.2 to 1.5 in Maverick 10.10

    - by Subhash
I am using Maverick Meerkat (10.10). It has Wine 1.2. I followed the instructions at WinHQ for updating wine. In Synaptic Package Manager, the highest version I get now for upgrading is 1.3, not 1.5. How can I get upgrade to Wine 1.5? I do not want to upgrade the Ubuntu version. It seems that some of the supporting libraries such as lib6 are old. I would like to know how I can update them so as to make Wine 1.5 available.

  • How to solve this problem starting new Opera-windows on dual monitor-setup?

    - by Mnementh
I use Opera and have a setup with two monitors. If I want to open a new URL opera -newwindow URL. The outcome differs, if I execute this command in a program on the same screen where Opera is, or on the other. On the same screen everything is fine. I get the message opera: Activated running instance and the new window with the URL is opened. On the other screen, I get a dialog with the following message: It appears another opera instance is using the same configuration directory because its lock file is active: /home/(my name)/.opera/lock and the URL is not shown. That's not only from console, also if I click a link in E-Mail or so. How can I fix this? Window-manager is awesome, if it does make a difference.

  • How do I get my Broadcom BCM4313 working correctly?

    - by Ataraxio Panzetta
I've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes from 367Bytes to a peak of 3Kb in its best moments. I know for sure the problem is neither the network nor the hardware. Network speeds are normal under windows on this laptop and in other computers with ubuntu aswell. lspci says the card is a BCM4313 model, but the Addittional Drivers Manager says these packecege contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322 based hardware seems like it installed the wrong driver... Is there anything I can do? I'm not concerned about compiling the driver or stuff like that, but I'm not sure on where to start... any help or guidance will be very, very appreciated.

  • DDNS Not Creating Journal (Dhcpd and Named)

    - by user130094
    * EDIT 1 * After monkeying with additional debug logging I see some log entries of interest. 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: journal rollforward failed: no more 27-Jul-2012 23:45:26.537 general: error: zone example.lan/IN/internal: not loaded due to errors. ^^^ If I can remedy the above messages I think I'll be good to go ^^^ * EDIT 2 * Grasping at straws I touched a forward and a reverse zone journal file and restarted named. Boom! Works. Despite documentation stating the files are created automatically and what I have seen before... dunno why but that did the trick. Also re-checked perms on the dir the files live in. As certain as I was, they were correct with named having rw. CentOS 6 (final) dhcpd 4.1.1-P1 named BIND 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 Basic DHCP and DNS functionality are in place on 192.168.111.2. Clients are assigned addresses as intended and can resolve local DNS names as well as Internet names. My problem is that named's zone journal files are not created. chroot: /var/named/chroot I tried placing the zone files in various directories (/var/named/data, /var/named, /var/named/dynamic - no matter which dir with named owning and wide open perms I now get nowhere). Along the way I, at one point, got a permission denied when named tried to create the journal. Resolved the issue by: chown --recursive named:named /var/named chmod --recursive 777 /var/named The journal was then created and here's where things fell apart. I attempted to tame permissions to something more sane and broke it. Once changed and having restarted named it threw an error indicating the journal was out of sync (or something to that affect)... didn't matter since this is a new setup so I deleted it and now it is not recreated. Now though I see no errors in /var/log/messages, my chrooted /var/log/named.log, or chrooted /var/log/named.debug. I increased the debug level with 'rndc trace' - no love. Increased trace to 10, still nothing. SELinux is disabled... • KVM guest disk performance

    - by Alex
My KVM guest does max. 200MB/s although the host does easily 700MB/s (Raid 0 with 4 SSDs). Configuration: File-based storage (raw), cache none. Host 24 cores, 96GB ram, Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and virt-manager. I suspect the CPU to be the bottleneck (one core goes up during hdparm). Anyone experienced the same or has an explanation ? Edit: one more info: guest is the same as host (Ubuntu 12). Same poor disk performance observed with Windows 2008 R2 and Suse Enterprise Linux (9 or 10 I think). Max 1 guest running.

  • Friday Spotlight: Oracle Secure Global Desktop and amitego VISULOX

    - by Chris Kawalek
Happy Friday! Our spotlight this week is a screencast about a fantastic solution that takes the security model of Oracle Secure Global Desktop and adds even more features. If you work in environments where you need to have a video record of users' interactions with applications, or need to ensure that two users can remotely work on the same session (a worker entering data in a form from one workstation and a manager typing an authorization code from another, for example), amitego VISULOX can do this and a lot more. • can't download music files purchased with ubuntu one from rhythmbox

    - by Andrea
I used the link to Ubuntu One in Rhythmbox music player to purchase music. On the My Downloads page from Ubuntu One in the Rhythmbox it shows each of the files I purchased with and mp3 button and an AAC button. I should be able to download the files from these buttons but when I click on the button nothing happens - I was expecting a download manager to open up. I also was expecting the files to be transferred to my UbuntuOne account but don't see anything there either. (this is probably a second question) I am using 12.04 beta version of Ubuntu and the version of Rhythmbox that came with it: 2.96. Do I need to install something to be able to download these links? Thanks.

  • I'm tempted to include easter eggs in my code - will this get me fired?

    - by blueberryfields
While working on a portion of the code for our application, I've noticed an opportunity to include one of my side projects as an easter egg. I can do this in a way which I am certain will in no way harm anyone, and I've met with a significant and representative sample of our client base - I'm certain that those who have the knowledge and skills required to find the egg, will also find it humorous. How likely is it that I will get fired for including an easter egg in our application? For more context, the application is aimed at enterprise clients, and, while the users of it tend to be technical, geeky and will enjoy the egg, those in charge of purchasing are on the sales/marketing side of things. I can't even begin to guess how they would react. Edit: Yes, I've asked my manager. As you might expect in a corporate environment, the answer was: "I cannot condone this. You're on your own"

  • Upgrade to Quantal unity top bar, side bar, and window declorations missing

    - by Nicky Bailuc
I upgraded from 12.04.1 to 12.10 via the Update Manager and the upgrade said it completed successfuly. However after rebooting the unity task bar was missing along with the launch bar and the window declorations. All compiz settings seemed to be purge deleted, and at first bootup it gave me a system error. The desktop exists, and once I remember I messed up the compiz settings and just had to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and in the virtual terminal type "unity --reset" then "sudo reboot". Everything worked as if i reinstalled the entire operating system. This time it said “Warning no variable set. setting to :0. The reset option is now dupricated”. What am I suppose to do now? I need this fixed as soon as possible because I need a couple of certainly installed programs and the data within them (long story short).

  • Can only connect to file server on second attempt

    - by Ross Fleming
I have a FreeNas file server on my local network and I usually connect to it from Windows and Ubuntu computers. Ever since I have upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 Ubuntu will only connect after a second attempt. By which I mean, I will browse to it via the file manager and once I click on the link in "Bookmarks" it complains that it could not connect. If I then try again it connects successfully and will keep up it's connection until the laptop is suspended or looses connection to the LAN for whatever reason. This isn't much of a problem as I don't mind having to click twice but my real problem is that this means that my scheduled backup will complain that it cannot connect to the storage device if it has not already been accessed during the current session. If there is some way to either stop the issue all together or to force the backup tool (default) to immediately have a second attempt at connecting.

    - by Kate Moss' Open Space
When an USB Disk plugs into CE/Mobile based device, how do you know the folder name of the mounting point?
