• undefined method `code' for nil:NilClass message with rails and a legacy database

  I'm setting up a very simple rails 3 application to view data in a legacy MySQL database. The legacy database is mostly rails ORM compatible, except that foreign key fields are pluralized. For example, my "orders" table has a foreign key field to the "companies" table called "companies_id" (rather than "company_id"). So naturally I'm having to use the ":foreign_key" attribute of "belongs_to" to set the field name manually. I haven't used rails in a few years, but I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right, yet I get the following error when trying to access "order.currency.code": undefined method `code' for nil:NilClass This is a very simple application so far. The only thing I've done is generate the application and a bunch of scaffolds for each of the legacy database tables. Then I've gone into some of the models to make adjustments to accommodate the above mentioned difference in database naming conventions, and added some fields to the views. That's it. No funny business. So my database tables look like this (relevant fields only): orders ------ id description invoice_number currencies_id currencies ---------- id code description My Order model looks like this: class Order < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :currency, :foreign_key=>'currencies_id' end My Currency model looks like this: class Currency < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :orders end The relevant view snippet looks like this: <% @orders.each do |order| %> <tr> <td><%= order.description %></td> <td><%= order.invoice_number %></td> <td><%= order.currency.code %></td> </tr> <% end %> I'm completely out of ideas. • How to move a ruby on rails application to a new server

  I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders? Am I looking for trouble if I go with the latest versions of ruby and the various gems? Any general gotchas to look out for in the process. • ruby on rails has_many through relationship

  Hi i'm having a little trouble with a has_many through relationship for my app and was hoping to find some help. So i've got Users & Lectures. Lectures are created by one user but then other users can then "join" the Lectures that have been created. Users have their own profile feed of the Lectures they have created & also have a feed of Lectures friends have created. This question however is not about creating a lecture but rather "Joining" a lecture that has been created already. I've created a "lecturerelationships" model & controller to handle this relationship between Lectures & the Users who have Joined (which i call "actives"). Users also then MUST "Exit" the Lecture (either by clicking "Exit" or navigating to one of the header navigation links). I'm grateful if anyone can work through some of this with me... • Rails version not shown post installation

  Hi all, I had installed rubygems 1.8 and further on I had installed the rails 2.0.2 gem. When I tried to view the rails version installed through the command rails -v It didn't work.. • What is Rails way to save images?

  I develop on iOS, and I'm switching from a PHP backend to Ruby on Rails. The interchange format is JSON. A quick Google search for 'save images in Rails' has nearly every result talking about saving image data as blobs to the database. I might be mistaken, but I'm under the impression that saving image data in a database is a huge waste of time and space (as opposed to saving a link to the file location ('/img/subcat/4656.png'). In PHP, it's pretty standard to receive the data, generate a filename, then save that file to disk, and then update the database with the image's location on disk. Is this the same for Rails, or is there some built-in ActiveRecord image functionality I'm not aware of?

  My recent SQL Server Performance Tuning Seminar in Colombo was oversubscribed with total of 35 attendees. Then I want to do the same thing in LINQ, and it throws the following error: NHibernate.QueryException: could not resolve property: Url.Length of: DC_Control I've searched alot for this "could not resolve property" error, but I can't quite figure out, what this means. Is this because the LINQ implementation is not complete? If so it's a bit disappointing coming from Linq2Sql where this would just work. I also tried it setting up the mapping with a hbm.xml instead of using FluentNHibernate but it produced teh same error.

• nhibernate configure and buildsessionfactory time

  Hi, I'm using Nhibernate as the OR/M tool for an asp.net application and the startup performance is really frustrating. Part of the problem is definitely me in my lack of understanding but I've tried a fair bit (understanding is definitely improving) and am still getting nowhere. Currently ANTS profiler has that the Configure() takes 13-18 seconds and the BuildSessionFActory() as taking about 5 seconds. From what i've read, these times might actually be pretty good, but they were generally talking about hundreds upon hundreds of mapped entities...this project only has 10. I've combined all the mapping files into a single hbm mapping file and this did improve things but only down to the times mentioned above... I guess, are there any "Traps for young players" that are regularly missed...obvious "I did this/have you enabled that/exclude file x/mark file y as z" etc... I'll try the serialize the configuration thing to avoid the Configure() stage, but I feel that part shouldn't be that long for that amount of entities and so would essentially be hiding a current problem... • Problem Implementing StructureMap in VB.Net Conversion of SharpArchitecture

  I work in a VB.Net environment and have recently been tasked with creating an MVC enviroment to use as a base to work from. I decided to convert the latest SharpArchitecture release (Q3 2009) into VB, which on the whole has gone fine after a bit of hair pulling. I came across a problem with Castle Windsor where my custom repository interface (lives in the core/domain project) that was reference in the constructor of my test controller was not getting injected with the concrete implementation (from the data project). I hit a brick wall with this so basically decided to switch out Castle Windsor for StructureMap. I think I have implemented this ok as everything compiles and runs and my controller ran ok when referencing a custom repository interface. It appears now that I have/or cannot now setup my generic interfaces up properly (I hope this makes sense so far as I am new to all this).   I'm currently a student game programmer working on an indie project. We have a team of eleven people (five programmers, four artists, and two audio designers) aboard, all working hard to help design this game. We've been meeting for months now and so far we have a pretty buffed out Game Design Document as well as much audio/visual concept art. Our programmers are itching to progress on our own end. Each person in our programming team is well versed in C++, but is very familiar with C#. We have enough experience and skill that we're confident that we will be successful with our game, and we're looking to build our own game engine in XNA as it seems like it would be worth our time and effort in the end. The game itself will be a 2D beat 'em up style game to be released over xbox live and the PC. It's play style will be similar to that of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. We want to design the game engine to allow us to better implement our assets into the game as well as to simplify the creation of design elements/mechanics. Currently between our programmers, we have books such as "XNA 4.0" and "Game Coding Complete, Third Edition," but we'd still like more information on both XNA and (especially) building a game engine from scratch. What are any other good books, websites, or resources we could use to further map out and program our game engine?

  I'm building a Rails application using MongoDB as the back-end and MongoMapper as the ORM tool. Suppose in version 1, I define the following model: class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_key, String end Later in version 2, I realize that I need a new required key on the model. So, in version 2, SomeModel now looks like this: class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_key, String key :some_new_key, String, :required => true end How do I migrate all my existing data to include some_new_key? Assume that I know how to set a reasonable default value for all the existing documents. Taking this a step further, suppose that in version 3, I realize that I really don't need some_key at all. So, now the model looks like this class SomeModel include MongoMapper::Document key :some_new_key, String, :required => true end But all the existing records in my database have values set for some_key, and it's just wasting space at this point. How do I reclaim that space? With ActiveRecord, I would have just created migrations to add the initial values of some_new_key (in the version1 - version2 migration) and to delete the values for some_key (in the version2 - version3 migration). What's the appropriate way to do this with MongoDB/MongoMapper? It seems to me that some method of tracking which migrations have been run is still necessary. Does such a thing exist? EDITED: I think people are missing the point of my question. There are times where you want to be able to run a script on a database to change or restructure the data in it. I gave two examples above, one where a new required key was added and one where a key can be removed and space can be reclaimed. How do you manage running these scripts? ActiveRecord migrations give you an easy way to run these scripts and to determine what scripts have already been run and what scripts have not been run. I can obviously write a Mongo script that does any update on the database, but what I'm looking for is a framework like migrations that lets me track which upgrade scripts have already been run.

• Impossible to do POSTs with appengine-jruby/RoR: Reflection is not allowed

  I'm trying to build a site with RoR on Google App Engine. I'm using the google-appengine gem (http://appengine-jruby.googlecode.com) and following the instructions in (http://gist.github.com/268192). The problem is that I can't submit ANY form! I've already tried this in two diferent clean Win 7 Pro envs and the result is the same. After install Ruby 1.8.6 (One-Click Installer): 1. gem update --system 2. gem install rails 3. gem install google-appengine 4. gem install rails_dm_datastore 5. gem install activerecord-nulldb-adapter 6. curl -O http://appengine-jruby.googlecode.com/hg/demos/rails2/rails2_appengine.rb 7. ruby rails2_appengine.rb (previously downloaded) 8. rails myproj 9. chmod myproj 10. ruby script/generate dd_model MyModel f1:string f2:float f3:float f4:float f5:integer f6:integer f7:integer -f 11. ruby script/generate scaffold MyModel f1:string f2:float f3:float f4:float f5:integer f6:integer f7:integer -f --skip-migration 12. dev_appserver.rb -p 3000 . At this point, I manually test the scaffold in (http://localhost:3000/my_models). The index is OK, then I create a new registry with the generated form, everything's fine, but when I try to create a second one, I get a "java.lang.RuntimeException: DummyDynamicScope should never be used for backref storage" in the console. As far as I read this is a won't-fix behavior in JRuby 1.4.1, but it's converted to a debug only warning in 1.5.0, so I proceed to install the pre release. 13. gem install appengine-jruby-jars --pre With this, that exception is solved and everything works great... until I move the project to the GAE server. 14. ruby appcfg.rb update . And now, in (http://myproj.appspot.com/my_models), again, the index is fine, also the new form, but in the moment that I submit it with valid data, I get a 500 error: "java.lang.IllegalAccessException: Reflection is not allowed on public int". As I said, this behavior is not present in the local SDK. In both cases, I'm completely unable to post anything.
