  • "Can't mass-assign protected attributes" with nested protected models

    - by JohnnyFive
    I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this nested model working. I've tried all manner of pluralization/singular, removing the attr_accessible altogether, and who knows what else. restaurant.rb: # == RESTAURANT MODEL # # Table name: restaurants # # id :integer not null, primary key # name :string(255) # created_at :datetime not null # updated_at :datetime not null # class Restaurant < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :name, :job_attributes has_many :jobs has_many :users, :through => :jobs has_many :positions accepts_nested_attributes_for :jobs, :allow_destroy => true validates :name, presence: true end job.rb: # == JOB MODEL # # Table name: jobs # # id :integer not null, primary key # restaurant_id :integer # shortname :string(255) # user_id :integer # created_at :datetime not null # updated_at :datetime not null # class Job < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :restaurant_id, :shortname, :user_id belongs_to :user belongs_to :restaurant has_many :shifts validates :name, presence: false end restaurants_controller.rb: class RestaurantsController < ApplicationController before_filter :logged_in, only: [:new_restaurant] def new @restaurant = Restaurant.new @user = current_user end def create @restaurant = Restaurant.new(params[:restaurant]) if @restaurant.save flash[:success] = "Restaurant created." redirect_to welcome_path end end end new.html.erb: <% provide(:title, 'Restaurant') %> <%= form_for @restaurant do |f| %> <%= render 'shared/error_messages' %> <%= f.label "Restaurant Name" %> <%= f.text_field :name %> <%= f.fields_for :job do |child_f| %> <%= child_f.label "Nickname" %> <%= child_f.text_field :shortname %> <% end %> <%= f.submit "Done", class: "btn btn-large btn-primary" %> <% end %> Output Parameters: {"utf8"=>"?", "authenticity_token"=>"DjYvwkJeUhO06ds7bqshHsctS1M/Dth08rLlP2yQ7O0=", "restaurant"=>{"name"=>"The Pink Door", "job"=>{"shortname"=>"PD"}}, "commit"=>"Done"} The error i'm receiving is: ActiveModel::MassAssignmentSecurity::Error in RestaurantsController#create Cant mass-assign protected attributes: job Rails.root: /home/johnnyfive/Dropbox/Projects/sa Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace app/controllers/restaurants_controller.rb:11:in `new' app/controllers/restaurants_controller.rb:11:in `create' Anyone have ANY clue how to get this to work?   • 'Attempt to call private method' error when trying to change change case of db entires in migration

    - by Senthil
class AddTitleToPosts < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :posts, :title, :string Post.find(:all).each do |post| post.update(:title => post.name.upcase) end end def self.down end end Like you can nothing particularly complicated, just trying to add new column title by changing case of name column already in db. But I get attempt to call private method error. I'm guessing it has something to do with 'self'? Thanks for your help.

When I run the custom tool to create the cs files for SubSonic all the templates now inject a letter g to the top of the cs files. To get this to compile I need to remove the g from the ActiveRecord.cs, Struts.cs, Context.cs and StoredProcedures.cs. Anyone else run into this? I am using MySQL.

  • Why MyModel.all works in Rails ?

    - by AntonAL
Hi, i don't understand this little thing: Suppose, we have "Person" model class Person < ActiveRecord::Base end Why Person.all works ? Person.all.each { |p| do_something } This syntax tells us, that we have Person class-object instanciated somewhere ? Or is it some convention over configuration case ?

  • activemodel for rails < 3

Does anyone know if activemodel works with 2.3.5? I'm looking for this exact functionality (namely, validations for non-AR objects) and I'm trying to find a clean solution for a Rails 2.3.5 app. Or if anyone knows of a good gem/plugin to use that can mimic activerecord like validations for non AR objects, I'm all ears

  • Setting default_scope according to some criteria

In controller: before_filter :authorize ... def authorize if some_condition @default_scope_conditions = something elsif another_condition @default_scope_conditions = something_else end end Inside the ActiveRecord default_scope :conditions => @default_scope_conditions But it doesn't seem to work, the before filter gets called but the default_scope doesn't get set. Could you please advise me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it or suggest me some other way of achieving that.

  • Rails & Twilio: Receiving nil when storing texts received from Twilio

    - by Jon Smooth
I have set up the request URL in my Twilio account to have it POST to: myurl.com/receivetext. It appears to be successfully posting because when I check the database using the Heroku console I see the following: Post id: 5, body: nil, from: nil, created_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01", updated_at: "2012-06-14 17:28:01" Why is it receiving nil for the body and from attributes? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! The created and updated at are storing successfully but the two attributes that I care about continue to be stored as nil. Here's the Receive Text controller which is receiving the Post request from Twilio: class ReceiveTextController < ApplicationController def index @post=Post.create!(body: params[:Body], from: params[:From]) end end EDIT: When I dump the params I receive the following: "{\"controller\"=\"receive_text\", \"action\"=\"index\"}" I attained this by inserting the following into my ReceiveText controller. @params = Post.create!(body: params.inspect, from: "Dumping Params") and then opening up the Heroku console to find the database entry with from = "Dumping Params". I simulated a Twilio request with a curl with the following command curl -X POST myurl.com/receivetext route -d 'AccountSid=AC123&From=%2B19252411234' I checked the production database again and noticed that the curl request did work when obtaining the FROM atribute. It stored the following: params.inspect returned "{\"AccountSid\"=\"AC123\", \"From\"=\"+19252411234\", \"co..." I received a comment stating: "As long as twilio is hitting the same URL with the same method (GET/POST) it should be filling the params array as well" I have no idea how to make this comment actionable. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm very new to rails. Here's my database migration (I have both attributes set to string. I have tried setting it to text and that didn't work either) : class CreatePosts < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :posts do |t| t.string :body t.string :from t.timestamps end end end Here is my Post model: class Post < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :body, :from end Routes (everything appears to be routing just fine) : MovieApp::Application.routes.draw do get "receive_text/index" get "pages/home" get "send_text/send_text_message" root to: 'pages#home' match '/receivetext', to: 'receive_text#index' match '/pages/home', to: 'pages#home' match '/sendtext', to: 'send_text#send_text_message' end Here's my gemfile (incase it helps) source 'https://rubygems.org' gem 'rails', '3.2.3' gem 'badfruit' gem 'twilio-ruby' gem 'logger' gem 'jquery-rails' group :production do gem 'pg' end group :development, :test do gem 'sqlite3' end group :assets do gem 'sass-rails', '~> 3.2.3' gem 'coffee-rails', '~> 3.2.1' gem 'uglifier', '>= 1.0.3' end

  • About to migrate :string but I'm thinking :text might be better. Performance/Purpose?

    - by Sam
class CreateScrapes < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up create_table :scrapes do |t| t.text :saved_characters t.text :sanitized_characters t.string :href t.timestamps end end def self.down drop_table :scrapes end end I'm about to rake db:migrate and I'm think about the attribute type if I should be using text or string. Since saved_characters and sanitized_characters will be arrays with thousands of unicode values, its basically comma delimited data, I'm not sure if `:text' is really the right way to go here. What would you do?

  • Should I skip authorization, with CanCan, of an action that instantiates a resource?

    - by irkenInvader
I am writing a web app to pick random lists of cards from larger, complete sets of cards. I have a Card model and a CardSet model. Both models have a full RESTful set of 7 actions (:index, :new, :show, etc). The CardSetsController has an extra action for creating random sets: :random. # app/models/card_set.rb class CardSet < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :creator, :class_name => "User" has_many :memberships has_many :cards, :through => :memberships # app/models/card.rb class Card < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :creator, :class_name => "User" has_many :memberships has_many :card_sets, :through => :memberships I have added Devise for authentication and CanCan for authorizations. I have users with an 'editor' role. Editors are allowed to create new CardSets. Guest users (Users who have not logged in) can only use the :index and :show actions. These authorizations are working as designed. Editors can currently use both the :random and the :new actions without any problems. Guest users, as expected, cannot. # app/controllers/card_sets_controller.rb class CardSetsController < ApplicationController before_filter :authenticate_user!, :except => [:show, :index] load_and_authorize_resource I want to allow guest users to use the :random action, but not the :new action. In other words, they can see new random sets, but not save them. The "Save" button on the :random action's view is hidden (as designed) from the guest users. The problem is, the first thing the :random action does is build a new instance of the CardSet model to fill out the view. When cancan tries to load_and_authorize_resource a new CardSet, it throws a CanCan::AccessDenied exception. Therefore, the view never loads and the guest user is served a "You need to sign in or sign up before continuing" message. # app/controllers/card_sets_controllers.rb def random @card_set = CardSet.new( :name => "New Set of 10", :set_type => "Set of 10" ) I realize that I can tell load_and_authorize_resource to skip the :random action by passing :except => :random to the call, but that just feels "wrong" for some reason. What's the "right" way to do this? Should I create the new random set without instantiating a new CardSet? Should I go ahead and add the exception?

  • Website Listing Commonly Used Ruby Gems, Including Alternatives

    - by ottobar
I know that I've seen this site before, but cannot remember it for the life of me. Basically, it is a listing of commonly used gems, like XML parsing or ORM libraries. For the ORM case, it lists ActiveRecord, DataMapper, and the like, stating the advantages and disadvantages of each. Does anyone know what this site is? I've googled and have not been able to find it.

  • Rails 3 full-text search options (gems, plugins, etc)

    - by shiftshane
I was wondering if there were any suggestions for how to best roll with full text searching in your Rails 3 apps? Thinking Sphinx and acts_as_ferret aren't updated for Rails 3 yet, and even basic activerecord search helpers like Searchlogic also aren't there yet. Any thoughts? Are you using any forked versions of the above gems that have been updated to Rails 3?

What's the easiest way to do so?

Do you have any ideas how to fix this, where to alter globalize2? Using: Rails 2.3.5 globalize2: commit from 2010-01-11

  • What is the meaning of method class in the class definition in Ruby?

    - by Steven Xu
I'm familiar with function definitions and variable declarations being in class definitions: public class MyClass { public int myvar; public void doSomething() { } } But what does it "mean" in Ruby when a method is actually called in the class definition? This happens amply in Rails, for instance: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :posts end What exactly does this do (at a lower level than "it adds some methods to the class")? How would I implement such a function (e.g., one that mixes in some additional methods)?

I can't figure out how to pass parameters to the named scope.
