• Enable SMB file sharing on OS X - "Incorrect Password"

  I have a Mac running Snow Leopard connected to an Active Directory domain. I can share folders on the Mac and view files from Windows without problems. When I try to enable my Mac account for write access through System Preferences, I'm prompted for my account's password. Even though I'm entering the right one, I get an "Incorrect Password" response. The same process works fine for the local Mac administrator account; it's the Active Directory account I'm having problems with. I followed the advice on this page on apple.com without success: (I used the Mac to reset my domain password, and re-created my login keychain) If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Until I fix this I can't write to my Mac file share from Windows.

• USB Hardware vs. Software Write Lock

  I'm in the market for a USB flash drive, and remember this cool feature a tiny 32MB flash drive of mine had: a write lock switch. This seemed like it would be an amazing feature to have as a shield against any nastiness happening to the drive on an unfamiliar computer. However, very few drives on the market offer this feature. Instead, it seems that forms of software protection are the more prominent method. This software protection causes me a bit of uneasiness, as it seems like this software wouldn't be nearly as bulletproof as a physical switch. Also, levels of protection seem to vary from product to product. Being able to protect certain folders from reading and/or writing would be nice, but is the security trade-off worth it? Just how effective can this software protection be? Wouldn't a simple format be able to clean any drive with software protection? My drive must also be compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7, as well as Linux and Mac. What would be the best way forward for getting a well-sized (~8GB) flash drive with a strong write protection implementation, for little or no more than a regular drive? Thanks.

• Sharing the same `ssh-agent` among multiple login sessions

  Is there a convenient way to ensure that all logins from a given user (ie me) use the same ssh-agent? I hacked out a script to make this work most of the time, but I suspected all along that there was some way to do it that I had just missed. Additionally, since that time there have been amazing advances in computing technology, like for example this website. So the goal here is that whenever I log in to the box, regardless of whether it's via SSH, or in a graphical session started from gdm/kdm/etc, or at a console: if my username does not currently have an ssh-agent running, one is started, the environment variables exported, and ssh-add called. otherwise, the existing agent's coordinates are exported in the login session's environment variables. This facility is especially valuable when the box in question is used as a relay point when sshing into a third box. In this case it avoids having to type in the private key's passphrase every time you ssh in and then want to, for example, do git push or something. The script given below does this mostly reliably, although it botched recently when X crashed and I then started another graphical session. There might have been other screwiness going on in that instance. Here's my bad-is-good script. • Virtual Machines Renaming/Backing up/Sharing

  I've started using VMware virtual machines for all of my software development projects and have a few questions for others doing the same thing. First, how can you rename the virtual machine and the name of the virtual hard drive? I have a base development machine that I clone for different projects. I'd like to name the machine and it's hard drive according the the project (right now when I copy them via cut and paste, the file names remain the same and I can only organize them by putting them in a specific directory). Second, what is the best way to back up a virtual machine? Is it possible (by breaking the virtual hard drive up into chunks instead of one big file) to get incremental backups working? It seems time machine always tries to make a copy of the whole thing which is time consuming because each virtual machine is around 30GB. Finally, how slow would it be to have a virtual machine shared on an NFS mount on a wireless N network and used from multiple computers (but with only one person using it at a time.) Would it be more reasonable on a gigabit lan connection? Thanks for your input! And please feel free to share any advice or wisdom about using virtual machines for software development and the best ways to speed them up!

  I'm using Windows XP, and I've been trying to setup my laptop so that I can connect to the internet connection that I get on the laptop through my mobile on an ad-hoc network. I've set up an ad-hoc network, but when I try to select "allow other users to connect through this computers internet connection", the only options I have are the Local Area Connections. The tutorial I've been using says that Wireless Connection should be in that pull down menu. Any help?

How should I configure virtualbox/guest so that the VPN connection would be visible on guest? I already tried NAT and bridged network settings. With both of these options I get only normal internet connection to work, but sites requiring VPN don't work on guest, only on host.

• Running hardware with only 32bit drivers in 64bit windows

  Recently we had to upgrade a system to handle added HD IP cameras. This upgrade involved an entirely new computer build with the exception of a rather pricey Geovision DVR (PCI/GV1480 series). Apparently while these cards do support Windows 7, they do not support Windows 7 x64. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here trying to figure out how we can remedy this, is there a virtualization solution that will allow devices with driver issues to passthru to the Guest OS? I was thinking XPMode may work for this solution however I am unsure if it runs 32bit or 64bit and if it'll allow driver-issue devices to pass to it. • How to rescue from an SD (SDHC) card that I can't reformat (possible hardware failure)

  I have a transcend 16GB SDHC card and a lot of photos on it that I'd like to recover. When I plug it into the SD card reader, it takes a while for the Mac to even recognize that there's a disk present, and it shows up as 1.07GB with geometry 520/64/63 (according to fdisk). First I tried file recovery: PhotoRec: no files are found (the images are in CR2 format and I'm using testdisk-6.14-WIP which claims to recognize that format under TIF) dd / ddrescue: they create a 1.07GB image, same problem as above TestDisk: doesn't find any partitions to recover I found a source saying that the correct geometry for this type of SD Card is Heads 255, Sectors/Track 63, Cylinders 1953, so I tried manually setting that geometry in PhotoRec/TestDisk. No improvement. Next I tried formatting the disk with fdisk. After writing and quitting, I ran fdisk again and it reported that the new format hadn't been saved on the disk. I also tried resetting the format/partitions with TestDisk and that failed also. The fdisk log is below. I don't really care about the card, I've already ordered a new SanDisk card. But I'd like to get the data off. Maybe, is there any way to force dd or some other tool to create an image of the disk based on the original geometry and not on what the card "thinks" its geometry is? Or am I missing something?

• Sharing files between Mac Mini and Ubuntu

  I want to get files off a Ubuntu box (10.04) and transfer them to a Mac Mini. I am connecting the two directly with a piece of network cable (Its not crossover, but I am told the Mini can handle this). The Ubuntu box has Samba installed(I think), but no internet connection. When I create a shared folder in Ubuntu it doest show up in Mac OS. But the Ubunutu box is appearing in the 'Shared' section in Mac Finder. Help

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines.   I'm in a situation where I act as a sort of techinical support to my family and less techinically experienced friends. I'm looking for a remote desktop solution where it's possible to setup a "zero-install, double click an icon"-solution where the client computer contacts me so that I may interact with their desktop. The last part is important as the people in need of my help don't know how to configure their router or even the firewall software on their own computer. They are able to click an accept button when asked if a program should be able to make outgoing connections. They have many different kinds of routers, as well as software firewalls, and I rather not deal with the problem of how to connect to them using whatever as well as the actual problem they are having. It must be: Free of charge for non-commercial use. Possible to use it in a mode where the computer wanting to share its desktop should be able to make a connection to my computer. My computer has a DNS name we can use. Compatible with both Windows XP and Windows 7. Independent of a third party server or infrastructure. Explanations of the above: I don't want to spend money on it when I help them for free. If it's free as in freedom, all the better! I guess this boils down to being callable like showdesktopto.exe opscomputer.com where opscomputer.com is my computers DNS name. If that is possible then I can create a shortcut they can use to connect to me when they need help. It's nice if it's possible to specify a password or key file which I can use to authenticate myself, but it's not required. They use the OS which their machine comes installed with. That means Windows XP or 7. I want something which will work in the long run. Using a third party service which might not be available when I need it disqualified such solutions.

  I have a personal web site with a slightly nontrivial Apache configuration. I test changes on my personal machine before uploading them to the server. The path to the files on disk and the root URL of the site are of course different between the test and production conditions, and they occur many places in the configuration (especially <Directory blocks for special locations which have scripts or no directory listing or ...). What is the best way to share the common elements of the configuration, to make sure that my production environment matches my test environment as closely as possible? What I've thought of is to use SetEnv to store the paths for the current machine in environment variables, then Include a common configuration file with ${} everywhere there's something machine specific. Any hazards of this method?

• managing a high traffic media sharing website

  i'm in the process of developing a website that i predict will generate a lot of traffic. the site will be similar to many other sites offering free media streaming: mp3's. we are going to start with a pretty minimal amount of media to share, but the basic idea is that artists will set up a profile page with music they have made available for consumers to visit the page and listen to the music. we are starting with just a handful of artists, but i think that this project will generate more and more artist pages. eventually i'd like to set it up so consumers can create personalized playlists. how can i best prepare server space and bandwidth capabilities? i have a small team of web designers and programmers working on the site, as i am pretty illiterate when it comes to site management. as the ring leader of this organization, i am more or less looking for financial requirements and monthly burn rate estimates. i don't have a ton of capitol to start with, putting together a business plan, but i am seeking investments. i have a game plan to grow fast enough to be successful, and slow enough to manage the financial growth requirements. any questions i may have failed to ask myself? is it realistic to start this project on a shared server, and upgrade? any financial advice you think i can use? i really appreciate any advice given, as this is my first business venture. thank you all in advance. • Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

  I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes? Update: Running testparm shows no errors. • Sharing disk volumes across OpenVZ guests to reduce Package Management Overhead

  Is it feasible to create a single "master" OpenVZ guest who would only be used for package management, and use something like mount --bind on several other OpenVZ guests sort of trick them into using the environment installed by the master guest? The point of this would be so that users can maintain their own containers, and yet stay in sync with the master development environment, so they'll always have the latest & greatest requirements without worrying too much about system administration. If they need to install their own packages, could put them in /opt, or /usr/local (or set a path to their home directory)? To rephrase, I would like several (developer's, for example) OpenVZ guests whose /bin, /usr (and so on...) actually refer to the same disk location as that of a master OpenVZ guest who can be started up to install and update common packages for the environment to be shared by all of this group of OpenVZ guests. For what it's worth, we're running Debian 6. • Windows SBS 2008 domain, Outlook 2010 calendar sharing / appointments not synced

  A user on this network reports not being able to delete appointments on Outlook 2010 calendars that are shared (not delegated) with other users in the domain. Specifically, the delete appears to work, but after 5 seconds or so the appointment re-appears. Permissions seem fine. Problem does not occur with other users because they do not share calendars. Is this behaviour intended (appointments re-appearing after they have been deleted)?

  I am setting up a beowulf cluster and I've been reading that it might be necessary to make the home directory of the cluster users shared between them (assuming this users are local to each machine). The other case is leave each user with its own home and the communication is up to the master node. Another idea that came up was to use an LDAP unique user logged on each machine in the cluster, that keeps the idea of the shared home between nodes (but is only one home of one user). • Calendar sharing between unrelated Domains

  I have a 'request' from one of the 'big guys' that has me scratching my head a bit. He is one of our Executives that also is a board member of several other organistations, so he floats around between 4 different unrelated companies, each with their own domains, Exchange setup etc. He has domain accounts in each organisation. He has an iPad with multiple Exchange accounts so he can see all his calendars which works Ok for him - Apple calendaring bugs/flaws aside. What he wants is the ability for 'reception staff' at each organisation to 'see' all his calendars as they are booking things for him in their respective organisations calendars without it conflicting with bookings made in his calendars by other organisations......you with me?? So for example: Company A books a meeting into his Comapny A calendar at 9am Monday and Company B books him a meeting in his Company B Calendar at 9:15am Monday on the other side of town and of course Company C has him booked in all day Monday on their Company C calendar. He gets all those on his iPad but he would like either a 'global' calendar all can see and book into or the ability for receptionists at Company's A,B and C to see all the Calendars to avoid these kind of conflicts. I told him to 'go away' straight off the bat, I don't control anything to do with the other companies or know their infrastructure. And quite frankly I don't want any part of it...but he's whining and he's high enough up the food chain that I can't ignore him forever. I'm open to suggestions. Is there any third party software/services that can facilitiate this kind of setup? I really don't want to be creating users in my AD structure to people not ion our organisation so they can get access to his calendar and I am sure there sysadmins feel the same. As usual - any advice is greatly appreciated ;)
