• Proper DNS records for handling subdomains and missing subdomains

  I'm trying to craft DNS records to support: Explicitly defined subdomains, e.g. ftp.mydomain.com A missing subdomain that redirects to www. Implicitly defined subdomains, e.g. <some user entered value>.mydomain.com For 1, I'm using CNAME records. All seems to be working well. For 2, I'm using an A record, @ -> 123.456.789.012. Worked well. For 3, I ran into some trouble. I tried adding another A record, * -> 123.456.789.012. This appeared to work initially, but it broke #2. i.e. now browsing to mydomain.com doesn't redirect to www.mydomain.com. I tried adding the CNAME record @ -> 123.456.789.012, but my DNS admin tool won't accept it because it's saying the @ is already in use, even though I deleted the A record using it. Am I configuring this incorrectly? What am I doing wrong?

• xauth, ssh and missing home directory

  We have several servers, and normaly everything works fine, except now... we get a new aircondition installed. This takes 36 hours and for this time almost all servers got shutdown, only 2 remaining servers run for the most important tasks (i.e. accepting incoming email, delivering some important websites, login-server). Everybody was informed that when they need appropiate data from the homedirs they should fetch it before take down. Long story short: Someone realized that he have run a certain program on one of the servers. No Problem, he can remote login into our login server and run the programm there without home directory (binaries are local and necessary information can be copied to the /tmp). That works like a charm until... ... the user needs to run a GUI programm. I find no easy way to make it running, usually ssh -Y honk@loginserver is enough but now the homedirectory is missing and ssh is not able to copy the cookies into ~/.Xauthority (as the file server with the home directories is down). Paranoid as all systemadmins all X-Server just listen locally not on tcp ports, so no remote X connection possible SSH config is waterproof - i.e. no way to set environment variables. My Problem is, that the generated proxy MIT cookie from ssh get lost as the .Xauthority doesnt exist. If I could retrieve it somehow I could reenter it a .Xauthority in /tmp. The only other option (besides changing the config) which came to my mind is, makeing a tunnel (netcat, or better ssh) from the remote host to the loginserver and copy the cookie manually (not sure if it the tcp-unix domain socket stuff works as expected). Any good suggestions (for the future - now our servers are already up)?

• SharePoint 2010 Enterprise wiki - [New page] missing

  I am trying to ramp up knowledge on SharePoint deployment and usage (never did before), due to a direction to use SharePoint 2010 as a repository platform (wiki format) for our customer's infrastructure documentation. In my test virtual server, a new site of Enterprise wiki template was setup. Went into Site Actions Manage Site Features to activate Wiki Page Home Page. The default sub-web then went from /Pages to /SitePages and looks like the default Team template. The odd thing is the Site Actions is missing the New Page option. My colleague does not understand why this is the case, as it ought to be there. The original /Pages sub-web does have the option. What conditions are in play that influences the appearance of that option? UPDATE Another phenomenon observed is in the Site Actions View All Site Content view, the wiki document libraries listed in the grid will have their hyperlink (e.g. "Site Pages") lead straight to the direct default page. It would not show its own table listing of pages under that document library, unlike the original Pages document library, which expectedly show up as a listing. I wonder if this hints to any problems.

• Missing whole disk device in OpenSolaris

  I have begun experimenting with Solaris and ZFS as a NAS. All was going very smoothly until I had a drive failure. When I replaced the drive, I no longer have a device file mapped to the whole disk. /dev/dsk/c7t3d0 does not exist but c7t2d0 and c7t4d0 both do. Also the sd@3,0:wd file under the /devices/ tree is non-existent. Do I have to prepare/partition the disk somehow to cause the whole disk device to exist? • Mapped network drive missing from My Computer and Explorer

  On a Windows XP Pro SP3 machine one network drive refuses to show up in My Computer or Explorer. The missing drive letter is G:, if that matters. Other mappings work fine. Other profiles one the same machine have no problem mapping G:. I can access the G: just fine typing it into the address bar or in CMD shell. I've used TweakUI to toggle hide/show G: with no difference. TweakUI says G: should be visible. I've logged off,on between toggles to make sure the settings are taking effect. I've looked at reg key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] and made sure it's zero'd. [insert ref link here] We've limped along with this broken setup for some time, just working around it, but some applications do not allow typing in a path when choosing a place to save files and it's reached the point where it's intolerable. So, anyone have any idea why XP won't show this drive letter? or how to fix it?

• Dialog box tells me there's a missing driver when installing 64-bit version of Windows 7

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 64-bit on my computer (ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, one 80GB HDD and two 1 TB HDDs). When I'm supposed to select whether I want to Upgrade or do a Custom install, I get a dialog box telling me: Load Driver A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step. I've tried to reach this step using a 32-bit installation disc, but that doesn't generate this message at all. Through the command windows (shift-F10) I can reach all of my drives, including my optical drive, without any problems--so what kind of device driver is it the installation wants? I've tried all the obvious drivers on the CD that followed my motherboard, but I can't seem to find the right one. The problem is that I don't know what device I'm supposed to load the drivers for in the first place. Can anyone help me? Edit: It turned out that my downloaded image was corrupted. I borrowed a DVD from a friend of mine, which worked!

• SBS DC DNS entries going missing?

  I've been looking at a problem on a friends SBS (2003) server where the client PC's aren't able to connect to the server with a variety of errors reported. Checking the server itself the only indicator of an issue is an error 5782: Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed with the following error: No DNS servers configured for the local system. Running a dcdiag reports that there are no DNS records registered for the DC so I fixed the problem by doing a netdiag /fix after which the dcdiag comes back clean and clients are ok again. It happened a few weeks ago as well and the same fix solved it. What are the possible causes of the DC DNS entries going missing? Is this a config option that needs tweaking or could it be solved by something simple like scheduling the SBS server to re-boot periodically? The only change they can think of that was made near to the time of the first instance of this problem occurring is that RRAS was started up to allow for a VPN connection from a home user. NB - The server is setup with a pair of NICs in a team so the server has a single virtual NIC providing both LAN/WAN connections to it. An external hardware firewall is in use rather than the windows firewall.

• Second CPU missing of Dual Core

  My Lenovo T61 has a dual core CPU. I just noticed that under Ubuntu 10.10 only one CPU is recognized. I know that once both CPUs worked. Not sure since when the second CPU is missing. Maybe since the last kernel update. Currently I am using linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic (for x86_64). What can I do to enable the second CPU again? • How to fix missing RAID1 drive

  I had to do some fiddling about with my cables inside thebox and now I am getting a "Critical Error" about the RAID disks during startup. I have a gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 motherboard. Aparently the RAID controller is an AMD SB710 chip. I'm pretty sure I know what happenned. The first time I rebooted I had forgotten the power cable on one of the disks in the RAID1 (mirror) and let it boot up. So I shut down and put the power back in. So now when it boots up I go into the RAID admin interface (between the BIOS screen and the OS loading): it shows the RAID1 as in error the logical device has one disk and says the other is disconnected or missing the other physical disk shows up as a single disk If I boot to the OS (Windows 7 32 bit) the data all seems to be there. If I go into computer management it says my partition is on a disk and working OK. But the other disk is offline because: "The disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online" So I am guessing because I STUPIDLY booted up with only one of the disks powered on, the other disk fell out of synch with the mirror and so now cannot rejoin the mirror. How do I fix this? I want to get the RAID1 mirror working again. There does not appear to be any "Repair" option in the basic RAID admin tool which I get into during startup before the OS boots. I have not made any explicit changes to the online one (but I guess the OS has probably written some admin data).

• With Ubuntu 12.04 unlike 11.04 Wine installed application start menu links are missing

  With Ubuntu 12.04 and wine 1.4 unlike ubuntu 11.04 with wine 1.2.2 installed application start menu links are missing. For instance with Ubuntu 11.04 including Wine I can install one of our Windows applications and then can go to Applications Wine Programs Semantic Designs TestCoverage Documentation to bring up the documentation for how to run our tool. Unfortunately with Ubuntu 12.04 the Applications menu is gone and going to Dash I do see "Recent Apps and more apps" but my installed Wine application and related documentation link is shown present, even though the wine uninstaller shows in present. I found this online suggestion and tried using the gnome "main menu"... Windows key to launch the Dash. Enter "Main Menu" in the search field and open the old Edit Main Menu app. Select the Category (aka Unity Dash Filter) you want the item in. Name the Dash/Launcher Item Add the Command to launch said app With "mainmenu" then get down to the TestCoverage Documentation and I could see a command link in properties of .. env WINEPREFIX="/home/sdtest/.wine" wine C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix /home/sdtest/.wine/dosdevices/c:/users/sdtest/Start\ Menu/Programs/Semantic\ Designs/Test\ Coverage/Java\ 1.7\ Documentation.lnk BUT I could not execute this link to view the installed documentation. So I copied the link properties into a file, set it as executable, and ran it as a bash script and the documentation came up! So why can't I use this link under main menu?

• Crashes and freezes after fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" error

  I came back from a 3-day weekend to a computer that was off. I leave my PC on 24/7, so this was odd. Turn it on to get the dreaded "BOOTMGR is missing" screen. Two attempts at Windows Recovery and it booted into Windows fine. After an hour or so, I get a frozen Chrome and my start bar disappears. Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up an error box telling me that Ctrl+Alt+Del failed to work properly. Clicking on any open application triggers an error (I can't recall the error now, but it essentially just said that the application couldn't be found running or something along those lines). I restart, and again, the same thing happens after a while of use. I turn it on, install the 47 updates I have or so, and then restart it. After a while of use (under an hour), it just freezes completely. My thoughts are: SSDs, RAM or PS. The only thing out of the ordinary is that there is a fan in the case that is now making noise whereas the case has previously been completely silent. I have no reason to believe this is anything more then correlation, but felt it is worth mentioning. I believe it MAY be the SSDs simply because of the BOOTMGR error, but not sure how to test that theory. My belief that it may be the RAM is simply from experience with frozen machines. I haven't had the time to memtest it, but will. The PS being the culprit is something I've picked up by reading similar threads on various forums, and it seems plausible. I am unsure how to test this though. ANY insight whatsover would be greatly appreciated!

• Missing startup screens and slow bootup/login after using WinClone to expand Bootcamp partition

  I used WinClone to backup my Bootcamp partition, which was a Windows 7 Ultimate install, on my late 2006 Macbook Pro. I desired to expand the Bootcamp partition's size. It worked reasonably well with some hiccups along the way and some remaining issues. First issue I ran into was the Bootcamp Assistant utility - it would not recreate the partition. This was due to a lack of contiguous space that is required for the Bootcamp partition. As a result I wiped the whole drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard, did the minimum amount of system updates, and created and formated a new Bootcamp partition. WinClone restored the image without complaint and the image was automatically resized to the new partition's size. Second issue I ran into was after the first boot into Windows. The first thing I noticed was that instead of the newer "slick" startup screen (4 colors wisping around, a Windows 7 title), there was more of an old school style startup screen (a progress bar with block increments, yellow/greenish color, nothing else really). The initial bootup to a login screen was slow, perhaps as Windows dealt with the partition changes. After logging in, the screen goes blank and the computer seems to hang for a minute, before completing the login. After subsequent restarts, the slick screen is still missing, boot to login screen is normal, but the time from login to desktop active is still very slow. As a side note, this behavior of a long time from login to the desktop finally loaded I've previously only seen when the computer would try to hibernate and fail (battery is really bad). On the next startup, I would see this behavior, but not subsequently. So a potential cause: I imaged the partition after hibernating out of Windows. From reading some posts/guides on the subject, this was not recommended, and perhaps shouldn't even have worked? Could the partition be stuck in some weird mode as a result that makes the boot issues appear? I've attempted to disable hibernation and restart, trying to delete the .sys file that hibernation uses. Other fixes I'm thinking of attempting are booting a Win7 disc and repairing the install/partition. I can't shake the nagging feeling something isn't right as a result of the modified boot screens and the slow login process.

• Slash after domain in URL missing for Rails site

  After redirecting users in a Rails app, for some reason the slash after the domain is missing. Generated URLs are invalid and I'm forced to manually correct them. The problem only occurs on a subdomain. On a different primary domain (same server), everything works ok. For example, after logging out, the site is directing to https://www.sub.domain.comlogin/ rather than https://www.sub.domain.com/login I suspect the issue has something to do with the vhost setup, but I'm not sure. • Error on 64 Bit Install of IIS &ndash; LoadLibraryEx failed on aspnet_filter.dll

  I’ve been having a few problems with my Windows 7 install and trying to get IIS applications to run properly in 64 bit. After installing IIS and creating virtual directories for several of my applications and firing them up I was left with the following error message from IIS: Calling LoadLibraryEx on ISAPI filter “c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll” failed This is on Windows 7 64 bit and running on an ASP.NET 4.0 Application configured for running 64 bit (32 bit disabled). It’s also on what is essentially a brand new installation of IIS and Windows 7. So it failed right out of the box. The problem here is that IIS is trying to loading this ISAPI filter from the 32 bit folder – it should be loading from Framework64 folder note the Framework folder. The aspnet_filter.dll component is a small Win32 ISAPI filter used to back up the cookieless session state for ASP.NET on IIS 7 applications. It’s not terribly important because of this focus, but it’s a default loaded component. After a lot of fiddling I ended up with two solutions (with the help and support of some Twitter folks): Switch IIS to run in 32 bit mode Fix the filter listing in ApplicationHost.config Switching IIS to allow 32 Bit Code This is a quick fix for the problem above which enables 32 bit code in the Application Pool. The problem above is that IIS is trying to load a 32 bit ISAPI filter and enabling 32 bit code gets you around this problem. To configure your Application Pool, open the Application Pool in IIS Manager bring up Advanced Options and Enable 32 Bit Applications: And voila the error message above goes away. Fix Filters Enabling 32 bit code is a quick fix solution to this problem, but not an ideal one. If you’re running a pure .NET application that doesn’t need to do COM or pInvoke Interop with 32 bit apps there’s usually no need for enabling 32 bit code in an Application Pool as you can run in native 64 bit code. So trying to get 64 bit working natively is a pretty key feature in my opinion :-) So what’s the problem – why is IIS trying to load a 32 bit DLL in a 64 bit install, especially if the application pool is configured to not allow 32 bit code at all? The problem lies in the server configuration and the fact that 32 bit and 64 bit configuration settings exist side by side in IIS. If I open my Default Web Site (or any other root Web Site) and go to the ISAPI filter list here’s what I see: Notice that there are 3 entries for ASP.NET 4.0 in this list. Only two of them however are specifically scoped to the specifically to 32 bit or 64 bit. As you can see the 64 bit filter correctly points at the Framework64 folder to load the dll, while both the 32 bit and the ‘generic’ entry point at the plain Framework 32 bit folder. Aha! Hence lies our problem. You can edit ApplicationHost.config manually, but I ran into the nasty issue of not being able to easily edit that file with the 32 bit editor (who ever thought that was a good idea???? WTF). You have to open ApplicationHost.Config in a 64 bit native text editor – which Visual Studio is not. Or my favorite editor: EditPad Pro. Since I don’t have a native 64 bit editor handy Notepad was my only choice. Or as an alternative you can use the IIS 7.5 Configuration Editor which lets you interactively browse and edit most ApplicationHost settings. You can drill into the configuration hierarchy visually to find your keys and edit attributes and sub values in property editor type interface. I had no idea this tool existed prior to today and it’s pretty cool as it gives you some visual clues to options available – especially in absence of an Intellisense scheme you’d get in Visual Studio (which doesn’t work). To use the Configuration Editor go the Web Site root and use the Configuration Editor option in the Management Group. Drill into System.webServer/isapiFilters and then click on the Collection’s … button on the right. You should now see a display like this: which shows all the same attributes you’d see in ApplicationHost.config (cool!). These entries correspond to these raw ApplicationHost.config entries: <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0" /> <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0_64bit" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0,bitness64" /> <filter name="ASP.Net_4.0_32bit" path="C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_filter.dll" enableCache="true" preCondition="runtimeVersionv4.0,bitness32" /> The key attribute we’re concerned with here is the preCondition and the bitness subvalue. Notice that the ‘generic’ version – which comes first in the filter list – has no bitness assigned to it, so it defaults to 32 bit and the 32 bit dll path. And this is where our problem comes from. The simple solution to fix the startup problem is to remove the generic entry from this list here or in the filters list shown earlier and leave only the bitness specific versions active. The preCondition attribute acts as a filter and as you can see here it filters the list by runtime version and bitness value. This is something to keep an eye out in general – if a bitness values are missing it’s easy to run into conflicts like this with any settings that are global and especially those that load modules and handlers and other executable code. On 64 bit systems it’s a good idea to explicitly set the bitness of all entries or remove the non-specific versions and add bit specific entries. So how did this get misconfigured? I installed IIS before everything else was installed on this machine and then went ahead and installed Visual Studio. I suspect the Visual Studio install munged this up as I never saw a similar problem on my live server where everything just worked right out of the box. In searching about this problem a lot of solutions pointed at using aspnet_regiis –r from the Framework64 directory, but that did not fix this extra entry in the filters list – it adds the required 32 bit and 64 bit entries, but it doesn’t remove the errand un-bitness set entry. Hopefully this post will help out anybody who runs into a similar situation without having to trouble shoot all the way down into the configuration settings and noticing the bitness settings. It’s a good lesson learned for me – this is my first desktop install of a 64 bit OS and things like this are what I was reluctant to find. • How Does MVC Handle Missing Data Requirements

  I'm teaching myself MVC concepts in hopes of applying them to a non-OO/procedural development environment. I am pretty sure I understand simple View - Request - Controller - Request - Model - Response - Controller - Response - View flow. What I am struggling with is understanding more complex scenarios. For instance, let's say I have a shopping cart form with a button for 'Calculate Shipping'. Normally a click on this button will follow the above flow. But what if there is missing data, like the zip code? Should the View verify this first and alert the user before making a 'Calculate Shipping' request? Or should the request be made and the Model returns a notification that critical data is missing? If the latter, does the Controller instruct the View to alert the user? What if I wanted to prompt the user for the missing zip code (perhaps in a popup input display) and then automatically request the 'Calculate Shipping' method again? I suppose this gets into the question of how smart a View ought to be. It seems that MVC has evolved due to richer UI and automation (such as with data-binding) and this muddies the water from a purist MVC perspective. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

• SSIS - Skip Missing Files

  I have a SSIS 2008 package that calls about 10 other SSIS packages (legacy issues, don't ask). Each of those child packages loads a specific file into a table. But sometimes one or more of these input files will be missing. How can I let a child package fail (because a file is missing) but let the rest of the parent package keep on running? I've tried increasing the maximum error count on the parent package, the tasks in the parent package that call each child, and in the child package itself. None of that seemed to make any difference. I still get this error when I run it with a file missing: SSIS Warning Code DTS_W_MAXIMUMERRORCOUNTREACHED. The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (2) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors. Edit: failpackageonfailure and faulparentonfailure are already all set to false everywhere.

• Dimension Reduction in Categorical Data with missing values

  I have a regression model in which the dependent variable is continuous but ninety percent of the independent variables are categorical(both ordered and unordered) and around thirty percent of the records have missing values(to make matters worse they are missing randomly without any pattern, that is, more that forty five percent of the data hava at least one missing value). There is no a priori theory to choose the specification of the model so one of the key tasks is dimension reduction before running the regression. While I am aware of several methods for dimension reduction for continuous variables I am not aware of a similar statical literature for categorical data (except, perhaps, as a part of correspondence analysis which is basically a variation of principal component analysis on frequency table). Let me also add that the dataset is of moderate size 500000 observations with 200 variables. I have two questions. Is there a good statistical reference out there for dimension reduction for categorical data along with robust imputation (I think the first issue is imputation and then dimension reduction)? This is linked to implementation of above problem. I have used R extensively earlier and tend to use transcan and impute function heavily for continuous variables and use a variation of tree method to impute categorical values. I have a working knowledge of Python so if something is nice out there for this purpose then I will use it. Any implementation pointers in python or R will be of great help. Thank you.

• Excel get_Range missing when interop assembly is embedded in .NET 4.0

  I build an assembly referencing a COM interop DLL. If I embed the COM interop types by setting Embed Interop Types to True in the Reference's properties (VS2010), at run-time an error occurs "object does not contain a definition for get_Range". If COM interop types are not embedded then no error occurs. Does anyone know why a particular method, Worksheet.get_Range should be ommitted or how to work around this or have any other relevant insights? I should be grateful for any help. The interop dll contains a reference to Worksheet.get_Range(object, [object]). Using reflector on my calling assembly there is no mention of get_Range under Worksheet. The interop assembly I am embedding is generated from Excel9.olb. I am not using PIAs as the application targets multiple Excel versions.

• AJAX.dll is throwing error?

  Hi all, I am using Ajax.dll in my web application.I need to refresh a page for maintaining a session more than one hour, So I created a ajax method that will be called for every 15 mins. • Dependency Walker Not Showing All the Depended Dll

  I have a fortran dll, and I want to know the assemblies that it depends on for redistribution purpose. One thing I found out is that the dependency walker doesn't show all of the dependencies, i.e, there are some dlls that my assembly is dependent on, but dependency walker doesn't show it out. An example would be a dll that makes use of intel mkl LAPACK dlls, but the dependency walker doesn't show that dependency. Why this is so? And any idea how to fix this problem, or is there other more reliable tool that I can use?
