• Network connection on an Acer Aspire 5253?

  Brand new to Ubuntu and PCs for that matter. I've been a Mac user all my life but wanted to try Ubuntu on the cheap so I bought an Acer laptop 5253-BZ893. I got Ubuntu 10.10 installed with no problem. The only problem I have is I have no network connection options, wired or wireless. I just get "No Network Devices Available". The computer came with Windows 7 installed and I'm able to connect to my wireless network fine using Windows so I know the computer works. I've been searching forums and google for hours trying to figure out why I can't get a network connection using Ubuntu but so far no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

• Google search does not show sub-pages from my website

  My website appears in Google search, but only the first page. Of course I have sub-pages linked from the first page, but the sub-pages do not show in Google search. Not in Yahoo, not in Bing. What should I do? It has been three years that sub-pages do not show. (I tried searching site:mydomain.com and pressed 'repeat the search with the omitted results included' link) What would you suspect the reason? My website addresses were like xxx.php?yy=zzz etc, etc, so I changed it to /yy/zzz using mod_rewrite. I thought it might be (X)HTML standard violations, so now I changed it. I hope Google will soon have my entire website, but I am a little bit pessimistic. Do you have any thought?

• Copyrighting software, templates, etc. under real name or screen name?

  My question is hopefully simple--should I copyright my work (art, software, web design, etc.) under my real name or my screen name? My real name and screen name are also easily connected with a bit of searching, so does it really matter in the end? I'm not a professional (at this point). I read this article: Is it a bad idea to sell Android apps in the Android Market under your real name? and they recommended releasing on the app market under a company name. I also read this article: On what name should I claim copyright in open source software?, but that didn't answer my question. I know it probably matters for big projects, but for little projects, does it matter? Thanks ahead of time!

• Any way to edit Warcraft MDX or MDL Animated models?

  I have been searching for a while for a way to get an animated mdl or mdx model into any 3D animating software (such as Blender), but so far have not had any success. I found a few methods of getting textured static mdx or mdl models into Blender/Milkshape/Hexagon, but no one seems to have written an importer that deals with the mdl/mdx model's keyframe animation. On that note, if anyone knows of a way of importing a keyframe-animated 3DS model into Blender, me and alot of people would appreciate it if you could let us know.   first sorry for contact me here. Recuro to you after reading all the material I found about it and so it does not get set. My question is: I can configure load balancing in any way out? I have a hub with 3 USB 3G modems, I got the 3 simultaneously connect with an upload speed of about 500kb in each approx. and a dynamic ip each. I do a unicast streaming with vlc rtp with a bandwidth of 1.5mb. Bone the sum of the three modems. I was searching on ifenslave, iproute. Then I found a draft vlc MultiCat. I understood that this could end, but configure it only moves a card. If I can help extend the information willingly. From now eternally grateful.

• Prevent gnome-shell's dash from listing Recent Items

  I am using gnome-shell in Ubuntu 11.10. I am getting annoyed when dash search lists Recent Items. I have tried many ways to prevent it like Deleting activity.sqlite and activity.sqlite-journal files under ~/.local/share/zeitgeist Adding all the possible entries in Activity Log Manager to prevent application logging Specifying time range in Activity Log Manager to forget my activities. But none of the methods are working. The recent items list is still populated. Is there any way to tell dash not to list Recent Items while searching, other than the above methods? Or is there any way to delete the recent items list?

• Is there a graphical way of installing fonts in 11.10/Gnome 3

  When testing 11.10, I wanted to install some fonts. However, it seems that I cannot simply double click a font file to install it. I've tried searching google, but I haven't found anything that says the gnome3 can't do this. Is this going to be addressed? Is there a way I can install new fonts easily? (I know of the manual copying of the fonts to /usr/share/fonts/, but I'm just curious if there is something easier I've been missing.) Thanks

• How important is it that you know the C++ standard?

  I did try searching, but I did not see a similar question (either that or my search terminology was incorrect - if so, feel free to close). I am an avid user of SO, and I notice that there are lots of references to the C++ standard in discussions and answers - and I have to admit, I have never read this particular document, the language makes my eyes hurt... So, the question is, can a C++ developer really code for a living without ever having read this document? Is it really important for us mere mortals who are not in the business of writing compilers?

• Where have the Direct3D 11 tutorials on MSDN have gone?

  I've had this tutorial bookmarked for ages. I've just decided to give DX11 a real go, so I've gone through that tutorial, but I can't find where the next one in the series is! There are no links from that page to either the next in the series, or back up to the table of contents that lists all of the tutorials. These are just companion tutorials to the samples that come with the SDK, but I find them very helpful. Searching MSDN from google and the MSDN Bing search box has turned up nothing, it's like they've removed all links to these tutorials, but the pages are still there if you have the URLs. Unfortunately, MSDN URLs are akin to youtube URLs, so I can't just guess the URL of the next tutorial. Anyone have any idea what happened to these tutorials, or how I can find the others?

Take your time composing the question so that it is set out as clearly as possible. Remember that the majority of people providing answers do so in their own time. • Just installed Ubuntu 12.04 - integrated speakers aren't working but headphones are

  I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows Vista. There were no previous versions of Ubuntu installed. My computer is a Sony Vaio all in one, with integrated sound card and speakers. I can't get any sound coming from the speakers, but if I plug headphones into the jack on the side of the computer and select "headphones" under "sound" in "system settings" I can get sound through them. I have been searching all day trying to find a fix but haven't had any luck. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mat :-)

• Not able to create screenshot of when menu is active [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Screenshot of active window doesn’t work I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and I am searching for a program that will let me to do screenshot of my menus too. Also, it will be very useful if I am able to "cut" only part of the new screenshot and save it as a new image. At this moment, when a menu is shown (for example I click on my clock and the calendar is shown) the "print screen" button is not working. This happens to with applications launchers menus in the left navigation panel. On windows I am using Gadwin Pro. Is there any alternative on Linux?

• Depth is disabled - How to turn on?

  In XNA 3.1 is there any other way to disable depth in 3D Worlds using DirectX models other than GraphicsDevice.RenderState.DepthBufferEnable = false; ? The reason for my question is I have quite a huge program which offers a 3D World with a couple of 3D DirectX models inside. Depth was never an issue since it ever worked fine but since a few days after doing some modifications my models are all depth-translucent i.e. depth-buffering and/or culling seems to be disabled. But in my whole source code I never touch any of the options related to Depth or Culling which means I never turn these settings on explicitly nor turn it off somewhere. So I am searching for some other statement maybe related to the GraphicsDevice that implicitly turns depth off - but I can't find it. (Sorry that I don't post any source code but I have too much source code and I simply don't know where to search) UPDATE: These are a couple of simple objects seen with correct depth. These are the same objects in their current state.

• System freeze after opening Wi-Fi menu can boot into the machine and use Internet in recovery mode

  So right now sitting in front of my Alienware area 51 desktop. It has a Broadcom Netlink BCM 5784M gigabit ethernet PCI E card. Most of the time able to get through the login screen and to the main screen if I click on the wireless settings on the top right-hand corner the system immediately freezes the cursor does not move at all keyboards are unresponsive. I was doing some quick Google searching and I found a suggestion to boot into recovery mode I did this and did a apt-get Distribution update which ran successfully installed then I rebooted into the regular system same thing I'm pretty sure it's the network card because even if I don't click the settings if a network related dialog opens such as disconnection or connection the system again immediately freezes. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 ** update 1 ** Just was able to use my system for a little bit however when I went into Firefox and hit the web it again froze so obviously a driver problem but I'm not sure how to get drivers for Broadcom which apparently according to the description on stack-overflow is terrible Any ideas? Sorry for lack of punctuation on an ipad.

• Google indexed site's address by accident. What do I do now?

  I was making a site for a friend of mine and he wanted to be able to see my progress as I worked on the site, so I decided to put the site on a server on my computer and enable access by a domain name registered to me. It turns out that I forgot to set up a robots.txt file for the site and somehow Google indexed the site. My question is: What do I do now? As I understand it, Google doesn't like duplicate content and my friend could have problems when I upload the new site to his server. Right now his current site, which only has a work in progress page, is first on Google when searching for relevant keywords and I really really don't want to damage that. Is there anything else I need to be concerned about?

• What does Enable/Disable mean in Bing's URL Normalization feature?

  I'm in Bing Webmaster Tools, under Index URL Normalization. Many parameters are listed in the table with 3 other columns: Status, Source, Date. The "Source" column says "Webmaster" where I have added parameters, and "Bing" where I assume the parameter has been auto-detected. "Date" is probably the last date it detected the parameter. I've tried searching the help files but I can't find what the Status column means. The top of the page says: This feature allows you to specify query parameters for Bing’s crawler to ignore. But it's not clear whether "Enable" or "Disable" is related to this, and if so what happens in each case. Does anyone know?

  I've been asked to find out "what's out there" when it comes to workflow engines. We have projects where a workflow based development environment makes sense. I've looked a little into jBPM but it seemed to have a steep learning curve. Google seems to take me to commercial products or products that I think are open source but instead have very limited "community editions". I could simply be searching for the wrong terms. • client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? The scenario I envision is that the searcher is looking for the English content, but is searching in their own language. An example could be someone looking for "downloadable English crosswords." MY IDEAS Buy ccTLDs and have them permanently redirect to subdirectories on domain.com. The subdirectories would contain html sitemaps in the target language e.g.-Redirect domain.fr to domain.com/fr OR perhaps it would be better to maintain domain.fr as an independent site in the target language with the html sitemap linking to pages on domain.com ? QUESTION Are the above methods good/bad? What are some other ways I can optimize SEO for foreign languages?

  Background A site has multiple ccTLDs: example.com for the US, example.co.uk for UK users, example.de for Germans, etc. Googling for certain city keywords will return rich snippets with a list of Google Places: Problem When searching on Google Germany, the domain for US users (example.com) appears instead of the corresponding ccTLD (example.de). This is not good user experience, as users would most likely like to book on a site localized for them (e.g. language and currency). Question What solutions are there? Is it possible to return different ccTLDs in rich snippets for Google searches in Germany/UK? Ideas Would implementing the hreflang annotation resolve this? What about entering multiple corresponding URLs in the structured data markup?
