  According to this page, CheckPoint's SecuRemote client is not supported on Vista 64: https://supportcenter.checkpoint.com/supportcenter/portal?eventSubmit%5FdoGoviewsolutiondetails=&solutionid=sk36681 Unfortunately in working with the systems team they will not confirm if the other two clients (SSL Network Extender or Endpoint Connect) are supported by their environment. Does anyone know if it would be possible to do the following? Install VMware Workstation on my Vista 64 system (host) install a Vista 32-bit OS in a virtual machine (guest) Install SecuRemote VPN client within the guest (Vista 32) Get my Vista 64 machine (host) to use the VPN connection from the guest Any other ideas are more than welcome.

  Welcome, How can enable remote terminal login into Ubuntu 9.10 using usb-serial terminal ? I got created device ttyUSB0 and i want allow to log-in using hyper-terminal. I found some resources but they are related to real! hardware rs232 ports, i can't find any information about USB converter. Right now i have established connection between that usb-serial port and my laptop (i can send text writing to port cp sometext.txt /dev/ttyUSB0 and read using hyperterminal). Any idea ? Regards

  Welcome, Today i want test following exploit "exploit/multi/browser/java_signed_applet" on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop using Metasploit framework. I'm following that guide: http://pauldotcom.com/wiki/index.php/Episode185 When im trying to start exploit, i got error: JVM not initialized. You must install the Java Development Kit, the rjb ruby gem, and set the $JAVA_HOME variable. [-] Falling back to static signed applet. This exploit will still work, but the CERTCN and APPLETNAME variables will be ignored. I have installed sun-java6-jdk, and gem install rjb And patch to JAVA look working because: ls $JAVA_HOME bin ext jre LICENSE README.html COPYRIGHT include lib man THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.txt If anyone, have any idea... • Ubuntu, apache2 wildcard dns to subdomain

  Currently I'm hosting my own (ubuntu) server with the following services: samba, ftp and a webserver. I've bought a domain and linked the DNS A-record to my ISP's IP. This is working correctly. Now I'd like to use the DNS wildcard-record to create subdomains. I want to avoid waiting 24hrs before the DNS change completes. Thusfar I'm only able to redirect all incoming wildcards to the same directory: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www Although I'd like to get: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test1 test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test2 My guess would be to change the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain. • laptop overheating ran defraggler and now its not as hot

  Trying to diagnose and fix an overheating Acer 5735 laptop, running speedfan and doing general workload to try and cause the overheat conditions. I notice that windows xp is badly fragmented according to defraggler, at 58% fragmentation. So I defrag whilst watching the speedfan window, which was at the start reporting high warning style symbols for all of the sensors. After the defrag, I rebooted and ran a few programs, and even defraggler again and the sensors in speedfan all reported green i.e. not high. Wondering if there is a correlation between windows fragmentation causing the hard drive to work harder and produce more heat inside the laptop? dont want to just assume that the problems are resolved, so either speedfan is not accurate enough or fragmentation can lead to additional hard drive heat? All comments or suggestions welcome.

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?

• development and music recording machine suggestions?

  I wasn't sure if this belongs on SuperUser so flag if so. I am looking to build, primarily, a windows development machine that is also good for recording using Cubase. I know I should use seperate machines but I'm on a budget this time of year. I also havn't kept up with hardware for quite a few years. Basically I know I want quad core, multiple monitor support (no gaming requirements). A lot of RAM, very quiet case and super fast HDD (SSD OR 10,000RPM)for compiling and latency. I will store libraries and other data on a USB drive. Sound card is not needed as I will be using an audio interface, all other music recording equipment is taken care of also. I could do with some decent monitor recomendations also. All suggestions welcome, thanks.

• apache and ajp performance

  I have an apache sitting in front of two tomcat app servers(one on the same physical server, the other on a different one) that does time consuming work(0.5 sec to 10sec per request). The apache http server is getting killed by an average of 1 to 2 concurrent requests per second. both Server spec is about 2GB of RAM. Is there a way to optimize apache to handle the load? any advise is welcome. • EloTouch touchscreen suspends correctly but does not come out of standby on Ubuntu 10.04

  I am using an EloTouch touchscreen on a minimal Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I have a bare Xserver running without any desktop environment, just an xterm. The touchscreen is working great, but there is still one small problem. As soon as the touchscreen goes to standby, it is not coming out of standby when touching the screen. Using a keyboard or mouse does get it out of standby though. I am looking for any hints or directions to a cause of this problem. Is this an x.org configuration problem? A driver problem? Is this a known problem with touchscreens in general? Any pointers are welcome. The driver I am using is an unreleased EloTouch driver (3.5.0). I received it through a reseller who can not give me any technical information unfortunately.

• Needs free/ opensource network monitoring tool for office LAN

  I know there must be a lot similar questions on SU. Let me explain my setup first. I have 4-5 PC, Laptops and Few Android Phones in my office. To get them on a network , I have a UTStarCom, WA3002G1 ADSL2+ router with a landline broadband connection which has nothing to do with any PC except the configuration settings. Broadband channel is always on, we need to switch on the router and the internet is ready for us. No Internet Connection sharing is done via any PC. I have a limited 20GB monthly plan, which is consumed in 10-20 days, depending upon the download requirements. So in the above case, i need some suggestions from you: How do I monitor my Internet Bandwidth along-with the connected systems, realtime? Any free opensource tool available? Tweaks / Changes in PC to save bandwidth as my ISP do not have any Unlimited plan. PC and Laptops are Windows XP and/Or windows 7. Either of the platform tools are welcome.

• What Firefox UI customisations can be used to improve productivity?

  Most desk jobs these days involve the frequent use of a web browser. What Firefox UI customisations increase your productivity and make your working life easier? Not necessarily add-ons (although no reason why not as long as they're UI-related), but I'm thinking more along the lines of toolbar removal/placement, icon/menu removal/placement, tweaks to userChrome.css etc. to make things more pleasant and optimal. Screenshots welcome. I realise some people feel UI customisation makes switching between machines harder. Whilst I agree to some extent, if you mainly use one machine, and it helps your productivity - why not?

• Replacing a W2K3 Domain Controller - what do I need to know?

  I have a network of around 70 machines, currently with two DCs both running Windows Server 2003 (DC0 & DC1). DC0 is a five year old Poweredge 1850 and has recently become increasingly flakey, and in the past fortnight has fallen over twice. I want to replace this machine, but I'm cautious as there is huge scope for this sort of thing to go wrong. The way I imagine doing this is building a new machine then doing a DCPROMO and running three domain controllers for a month or so until I'm happy that everything is working as it should be before retiring the old machine. Particular areas of concern are the replication of roles from the current controllers (GP settings for instance) and the ramifications of switching off the machine that has, up until now, been the 'primary'. If there are compelling reasons to use Server 2008 I'm willing to do so, however I don't know if this would cause problems with my exisiting 2003 machines. Any advice on best practice or previous experiences would be most welcome.

• A specific user is unable to log in to vsftpd

  I am setting up a new user let his name be ftpguy. He has access to only one directory /var/www/xxx. I have already chowned the directory so that he has write and read privileges. The user is also unable to login via ssh as I have disabled that by changing his shell to /sbin/nologin. Also, in vsftpd config, I have enabled the chroot_local_user. Now whenever I log in from ftp, i get an auth error. Connect socket #1008 to xxxxxxxx, port 21... 220 Welcome to blah FTP service. USER ftpguy 331 Please specify the password. PASS ********** 530 Login incorrect. I changed the password to something different several times, using the passwd command, nothing happens, i still the above error. However I am able to log in with my ssh creditals to my ftp server without any problems.(I do not use a key).

• FAVICON: Favicon now showing up

  I'm using a .png favicon file and it is not showing up on my site. Doing a grep, I see the following in home.htm which looks right for me(I have also confirmed it's in the HEAD section within home.htm): home.htm: <link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/png" href="favicon.png"> The favicon.png file is in the same directory as the home.html file. • Share a USB sound card over a network/bluetooth (Mac & PC)

  I've been wondering how I can stream audio to an external Edirol USB sound card, wirelessly, on both Mac and PC. I'm not looking for high quality transmission, just to play mp3s from my Mac laptop to a USB sound card that is attached to two very nice balanced studio reference monitors. Is there any way I can firstly power the sound card box, and secondly, provide with an audio stream along it's USB input. I've looked at the Belkin USB hub, and I have a Time Capsule with the AirPort interface inside. These things seem to do vaguely what I want but when it comes to audio, the specifications are less clear. Any suggestions very welcome.

• Joining H264 *without* re-encoding

  Hi, I have two halves of a single show in two .MP4 files, encoded in H264. I would like to join them without re-encoding. Is this possible? I managed to create a joined video as a Quicktime file (.mov) using Quicktime Pro, but then Quicktime Pro will not convert it back to .MP4 without re-encoding. This may be because looking inside the .mov file, the two H264 videos are in there still separated as individual "objects". I am also struggling with MPEG StreamClip without reaching a real solution. But I may have missed something. Note that I have the same issue with MPEG2 files. I can export them to a .MPEG container or a .TS file for example, but I don't know how to join them without re-encoding. Any suggestion welcome, preferably using Mac software.

• How to clone and deploy multiple machines?

  Hi, See what I wanna do is basically make bootable clones or disc images or whatever(let's call it "stuff" for now ) and store many of them in a single big HDD. Then, I wanna use that big HDD and the "stuff" in it to be able to deploy new machines without the hassle of reinstalling Windows and whatnot(i.e. I do not want to restore nor simply clone a same machine, I literally want to use clones to save time during machine set up). Obviously I'd deploy the "stuff" onto an HDD going into a machine that I know the hardware of to avoid driver issues and whatnot. I alos have enough Windows keys to deal with the multiple activations. I tried using Acronis True Image but it doesn't seem to do what I want(unless idk how to use it properly). Any advice is welcome thanks :)

• Running own DNS Server for learning purpose

  I would like to run my own DNS server in my laptop for learning purpose. I recently used Google Public DNS and liked it. I wanted to build some thing similar and small for my web browsing. What I vaguely dream of is to use my own DNS server as Primary DNS server and Google public DNS as secondary DNS server. I would like to build my own DNS server gradually by editing the configuration files (If it can be automated it will be great, but have no clues there). Sometimes it sounds like a stupid idea to me, but I am fine with editing config file for each site I want to add to my DNS server. Any pointers/suggestion is welcome.

• Can Time Capsule backup its own network share or can Time Machine be setup to do so?

  Apple's Time Capsule can act as both a backup drive and a network shared drive at the same time. Can it backup its own data to incremental backups? I can't find this information anywhere. I've not used Time Machine so I don't know if it can be configured to backup shared drives (independently of whether Time Capsule has the option). I would like this to be a feasible way of freeing up some storage on an older MacBook Air by keeping large media such as photos archived on the drive like you would a USB external drive. But having the only copy accessible throughout the house and not backed up would make me nervous. I like the idea of having a good router, network storage and backup in one box, although obviously it's safer to backup the Capsule itself to USB occasionally too. Other solutions to this are of course welcome if this is not possible.

• Server Fax Farm - Need suggestions, or advice

  We're Looking at creating a large fax farm via T.38 (Fax over Voip - hundreds of incoming and outgoing faxes) on linux servers, anyone have any suggestions on what is available? All my searches return using Asterisk 1.6.x with a commercial product from Digium called "Fax for Asterisk" (with required purchase of "channels" at $38.00 per channel). There must be an open source project out there I can't seem to find. Suggestions welcome!   What resources (books, Web pages etc) would you recommend that: explain the causes of latency in TCP/IP-over-Ethernet networks; mention tools for looking out for things that cause latency (e.g. certain entries in netstat -s); suggest ways to tweak the Linux TCP stack to reduce TCP latency (Nagle, socket buffers etc). The closest I am aware of is this document, but it's rather brief. Alternatively, you're welcome to answer the above questions directly. edit To be clear, the question isn't just about "abnormal" latency, but about latency in general. Additionally, it is specifically about TCP/IP-over-Ethernet and not about other protocols (even if they have better latency characteristics.)

• Fujitsu siemens V6535 - crash when going standby ?

  Welcome, I trouble with my laptop fujitsu siemens model V6535. My siemens work under Windows 7, and from upgrade time (vista to 7) notice something what make me really angry. When my siemens go to standby mode (when i don't use it for some time), power diode change to red and start blinking (standbay mode). When i push power button (wake up it), blinking diode change to green but nothing else happend (nothing on display, no sound of HDD). When i press power button few second and try turn it on again... it wont display anything... i have unplug charger and then shutdown and power on again without power cable. Then he start working... Few days ago i done upgrade bios to nevest version... but it don't help... Anyone have idea what can be wrong ?

• Increase backup speed, Backup Exec 2010 - QNAP TS419U+ NAS

  We have a QNAP NAS and the network shares are being backed up by Backup Exec 2010 over SMB. We can't install the remote agent on the NAS as it has an ARM processor and, as far as I am aware, there is no compatible agent. Do you have any suggestions on any faster method of backing up these shares as opposed to the current scenario? Currently the network bandwidth is not the issue, it seems that this access method is just not able to go any quicker. We've also added the NAS shares to the start of the selection list, but we're still running into 18 hours total backup time (total amount of data on the NAS is roughly 650GB). Any comments and/or suggestions welcome. EDIT: Data is being pulled from the NAS by Backup Exec to a LTO4 tape drive
