• How do I securely execute commands as root via a web control panel?

  I would like to build a very simple PHP based web based control panel to add and remove users to/from and add and remove sections to/from nginx config files on my linode vps (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS). What is the most secure way of executing commands as root based on input from a web based control panel? I am loathe to run PHP as root (even if behind an IP tables firewall) for the obvious reasons. Suggestions welcome. It must be possible as several commercial (and bloated, for my needs) control panels offer similar functionality. Thanks

• Perl program not getting executed in xampp

  I am very new to CGI programming in Perl. In order to learn it i installed xampp 2 days back. But I am unable to execute my perl code . The code goes as folows: #!/usr/bin/perl use CGI; $co = new CGI; print $co->header, $co->start_html(title=>'CGI Example'), $co->center($co->hi('Subhayan welcome to CGI')), $co->end_html; Have saved the code in a text file named : Subhayan1.cgi and kept it in the folder cgi-bin under xampp folder in C drive. When i try to execute this through my web browser typing : "http://localhost/cgi-bin/Subhayan1.cgi" it comes up with a "Object not found page". I checked the apache configuration file under : xampp/apache/conf/httpd.conf. I checked the entry : ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "C:/xampp/cgi-bin/" It looks like pointing to the correct directory. What is the issue here can anyone help please???

• Can't seem to redirect from a ViewScoped constructor.

  I'm having trouble redirecting from a view scoped bean in the case that we don't have the required info for the page in question. The log entry in the @PostContruct is visible in the log right before a NPE relating to the view trying to render itself instead of following my redirect. Why is it ignoring the redirect? • Prevent audio recording applications from picking up non-microphone audio output

  When talking to people over Mumble/Teamspeak/Ventrilo, I have a few who are broadcasting all of their audio output (e.g. music playing in the background, game sounds, etc.) whenever they are sending -- in addition to the microphone signal. I don't have this problem myself, so it's hard for me to troubleshoot remotely, but I'm interested in collecting solutions for this problem for Windows XP, Vista and 7, so that I can link them to this question. Links to other related SU questions are highly welcome as well, but I couldn't find any. Most people seem to try to either get microphone to feed back into the audio output or turn exactly that off, which is different from this problem. I'm talking about the opposite problem, the output being fed into the input.

• Windows 7 x64 CD to MP3 ripper

  I'm trying to find a good, simple CD-to-MP3 ripper to copy my physical CD's to my computer's hard disk. I'm running Windows 7 Professional x64 - and that appears to be a major problem. All the "usual" free- and shareware tools I've tried (CD-to-MP3, Visual MP3 and quite a few more) seem to have trouble with either 64-bit Windows, or with my HP CD/DVD built into my HP Compaq Elite 8100 machine. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I don't want to install a monster like iTunes - something really clean, small, simple would be fine. Free- or Shareware - if it works reliably and with good quality output, I'll be happy to register! Any hints are welcome!

• Windows system drive letter changed after repair install

  yesterday I did a repair install, because Windows froze on welcome screen after resizing its partition on a dual boot system. corresponding question Everything worked fine so far, but now I am facing another challenge: The Windows drive letter changed from G: to C:, so that most programs, including drivers, firewall and virus scanner do not work anymore. I tried to reinstall the virus scanner, but the uninstaller said, that drive G: is not available. What to do now, to get all programs running again? Is it possible, to rename C: to G: or will that mess up my system?

• Computer to Tv cable question

  Hi all. Heres my query : I have a PC with all the usual outputs and a couple of TVs in the house with inputs to connect to a computer. Now, what i would like to do is get rid of cable TV and using the input into the spliters in the basement,( ie. where the input cable from outside actually feeds the system ) have the computer become the "Cable supplier" ( so to speak ) and have the output ( via some sort of box ) from the computer, convert what is on my monitor into an RF signal that is then fed into the cables in my house and ultimately to each TV / room . I don't know if there is such an item but would welcome any thoughts you might have on such a set up. I am not into HD or the like, so the picture quality needs only to be watchable, not HD. I don't want to have to set up seperate cables to feed the audio on each TV. Thanks in advance!

• Mount a share on a Mac using a login hook

  I have a script that mounts a Samba share to a folder on the desktop, it runs no problem but when its setup as a LoginHook it doesn't mount the folder. Does anyone have a working login hook that mounts a share that they can post? Or know any issues with mounting shares during login? • GNS3 Cannot ping/resolve DNS record

  I set up an internet lab with GNS3, which has 3 routers, in each node there is a computer directly connected. One of the hosts is a DNS server, Windows 2003 Server. The other one is a Windows XP machine. Ping is good between routers and machines but no ability to ping domain.com record on DNS server 2003. I set a static nat on the router to route all traffic from gateway to the DNS server internal ip address, still no answer for the dns request. Any ideas or thoughts will be most welcome.

• VGA resolution with Sony Bravia TV

  I just bought Sony Bravia KDL40S5100 tv. The VGA input is acting weird. I have a Gateway desktop with Windows 7 and Intel 945 graphics. I also have a laptop running Ubuntu 9.04. The TV will not display the gateway when the resolution is over 1360x768, I have to wait for it to time out and bring me back. The Intel driver even urges me to switch to the "recommended" 1920x1080. I just installed Win7 using this tv as the monitor. When the orginial welcome screen started after setup, it started me at 1080. I had to start in safemode to set a res that would work! When I plug my laptop into the TV, 1920x1080 works just fine. Any ideas? This laptop also has Win7, which I am going to try, but I haven't gotten a chance yet.

• Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. • FTP issue - VSFTPd and connecting to from FileZilla

  I'm trying to connect to a CentOS Linux box that I have hosted on EC2 and I think I have everything configured correctly but when I try to connect I get this series of messages Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Command: PASV Error: Connection timed out Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing Not sure where to start troubleshooting this issue. Any ideas? Do I need to change any permissions? I would think this ID has the ability to see my own home directory. I am able to push/pull files from the command line version of FTP client working on Windows.

• Limit disk I/O one program creates?

  Hardware: one virtualization server. Dual Nehalem, 24GB RAM, 2 TB mirrored HD. Software: Debian, KVM, virt-manager on the server with several virtual machines that use Linux too. 2 TB Disk is a big LVM, each VM gets a logical volume and makes its own partitions in that. Problem: One of the programs that runs on one of the VMs creates huge disk load. This never was an issue, because the program never ran on such a powerful hardware. Now the CPUs are fast, and lots of I/O is the result. We cant do much against that at the moment, because the tool is a black box. On the other hand, the speedy computation is welcome. The program creates about 5 GB of temp files which get overwritten during the next iteration. Question: How can we limit the disk I/O for the process?

Now we have grown and need to use something a bit more professional like [email protected] how can this change be implemented with minimal disruption? We currently only use smarteremail.   I am performing some interactive testing using HP's QuickTest Professional and Linux. I am connecting via SSH and feeding the BASH script lines directly into the command line. The problem I'm having is that the script executes as it is entered. I'm attempting to find a way that I can feed the script to the command line, but save execution until the entire script is complete. Anyone have any experience around doing this? I'll admit, it isn't the ideal way to perform this, but it's what I'm faced with at the moment. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

• Troubleshooting intermittantly long 'page loading' problem

  Working off IIS 7 with an asp.net mvc app. Most page accesses are lightening quick. Sometimes the browser reports 'page loading' for an exceptionally long time. We are still in the development/testing mode so it's not a network/bandwidth issue. Happens in both IE and FF. No explicit error conditions in the server logs. If i could reproduce it i could run firebug/fiddler to give more info. As it is, it's a little too infrequent to simply leave both those running hoping for the condition to fire - unless/until that's the only option to get better info. I have a hunch this is client-side jquery/ajax related but only a hunch - don't have enough background in either jQuery or MVC to really know what can go wrong. Any initial troubleshooting suggestions welcome. thx

• balancing loudest and quietest speaker noises

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? • Issues with FTP on my server

  I installed FTP on my windows 2003 box I created a FTP site on a ipaddress, I am not allowing anonymous access. I created a user that has access to the folder c:\ftptest connecting to my server using filezilla shows: connectiong to -0.0.0.0 connection established, waiting for welcome message could not connect to server I tried both active and passive modes. The port on the server is open i.e. TCP 21 I can connect to other FTP sites so my locla firewall isnt' the issue. (now I know why sys admin work is so fun!)

• Watch Flash video but block out part of it

  I'm learning a foreign language. There are several online sites that have Flash video in the language I'm learning (e.g., Hulu), which is great. Unfortunately, they have English subtitles, which is (depending on who you ask) somewhere between "annoying" and "actively harmful to my learning". When I'm watching them in a window, I can just move them near the bottom of the screen, or put another window over them. That's awkward, but it kind of works. But I'd like to watch them full-screen, on my TV set. Full-screen Flash doesn't let me put any window on top of it. Is there a way to watch an online Flash video but block out part of it? I'll probably be using my Mac for this, but maybe Linux -- solutions for either one welcome.

• How to use a custom Windows 7 system drive letter?

  The subject PC has many hard drive partitions dedicated for different purposes, C: being a Windows XP system drive and F: (which is actually the next primary partition placed right after C: physically) being intended to host a newly installed Windows 7 instance (meant for "dual boot" configuration). Needless to say the intention was all the partitions to have exactly the same letters under both OSes, needless to say Windows 7 has detected all of them in a completely different order which would not be a problem (as the non-system drives letters can be changed easily after installation) if it wouldn't have named it's system drive C: (meant to be F:), which I have no Idea how to change. Is there a way to set the letter you want? I don't mind reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch if it is to be set at installation time or even configured in some text files on the installation DVD. I have tried this way, but it renders the Windows 7 system desktop unbootable (gets stuck on "Preparing your desktop..." after "Welcome").

• microsoft mouse and keyboard center doesn't show my mouse

  as part of a recent windows update, the irritating and intrusive intellipoint microsoft mouse software now seems to have been replaced by the even more irritating and intrusive "microsoft mouse and keyboard center[sic]" I am left handed and need to switch the left and right mouse buttons round. the option to do this has disappeared from the mouse control panel, to be replaced by a link which opens up said mouse and keyboard center. this in turn is a window which allows me to change settings on the keyboard but does not have any way to control mouse settings any hints would be very welcome. this is driving me nuts.
