• NHibernate + Remoting = ReflectionPermission Exception

  Hi all, We are dealing with a problem when using NHibernate with Remoting in a machine with full trust enviroment (actually that's our dev machine). The problem happens when whe try to send as a parameter an object previously retrieved from the server, that contains a NHibernate Proxy in one of the properties (a lazy one). As we are in the dev machine, there's no restriction in the trust level of the web app (it's set to Full) and, as a plus, we've configured NHibernate's and Castle's assemblies to full trust in CAS (even thinking that it'd not be necessary as the remoting app in IIS has the full trust level). Does anyone have any idea of what can be causing this exception? Stack trace below. • Codemetric optimized httpwebrequest in C#

• Problems running Ruby on Rails apps on shared hosted server

  I have problems installing any Ruby On Rails app on my shared hosted server. Mongrel shows html as plain text for all pages. The problem occurs for any app, even if I create a test empty app and add a scaffolded view without changing anything. It appears that the Mongrel crashes when trying to put cookies to the response header. The HTTP header looks incomplete, the Content-type and other parameters are missing: curl 127.0.0.1:12002/users -I HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: close Date: Wed, 26 May 2010 09:46:50 GMT Content-Length: 0 Here is the output from mongrel.log Error calling Dispatcher.dispatch #<NoMethodError: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! • Why can't I set boolean columns with update?

  I'm making a user administration page. For the system I'm creating, users need to be approved. Sometimes, there will be many users to approve, so I'd like to make that easy. I'm storing this as a boolean column called approved. I remembered the Edit Multiple Individually Railscast and thought it would be a great fit. Either way, I'm currently SOL. :) I want to be able to use an extension method to set properties on a class, but that class may (or may not) be updated on a non-UI thread, and derives from a class the enforces updates to be on the UI thread (which implements INotifyPropertyChanged, etc). Why am I losing the fucntionality of the original base class at this level? Is it incorrect to add the element (button1) to the maskcontainer inside of the main.xaml? My end goal is to create a container that is reusable, but inherits all properties/methods that I've specified throughout the chain. Any help is appreciated.

• thread reaches end but isn't removed

  I create a bunch of threads to do some processing: new Thread("upd-" + id){ @Override public void run(){ try{ doSomething(); } catch (Throwable e){ LOG.error("error", e); } finally{ LOG.debug("thread death"); } } }.start(); I know i should be using a threadPool but i need to understand the following problem before i change it: I'm using eclipse's debugger and looking at the threads in the debug pane which lists active threads. Many of them complete as you would expect, and are removed from the debug pane, however some seem to stay in the list of active threads even though the log shows the "thread death" entry for these. When i attempt to debug these threads, they either do not pause for debugging or show an error dialog: "A timeout occurred while retrieving stack frames for thread: upd-...". there is some synchronization going on within the doSomething() call but i'm fairly sure it's ok and since the "thread death" log is being called i'm assuming these threads aren't deadlocked in that method. i don't do any Thread.join()s, however i do call a third party API but doubt they do either. Can anyone think of another reason these threads are lingering? Thanks. EDIT: I created this test to check the Garbage Collection theory: Thread thread = new Thread("!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!") { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("running"); ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(5000); System.out.println("finished"); // <-- thread removed from list here } }; thread.start(); ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(10000); System.out.println(thread.isAlive()); // <-- thread already removed from list but hasn't been GC'd ThreadUs.sleepQuiet(10000); this proves that it is nothing to do with garbage collection as eclipse removes the thread from the thread list as soon as it completes and isn't waiting for the object to be de-referenced/GC'd.

• Controlling ASP.NET output cache memory usage

  I would like to use output caching with WCF Data Services and although there's nothing specifically built in to support caching, there is an OnStartProcessingRequest method that allows me to hook in and set the cacheability of the request using normal ASP.NET mechanisms. But I am worried about the worker process getting recycled due to excessive memory consumption if large responses are cached. Is there a way to specify an upper limit for the ASP.NET output cache so that if this limit is exceeded, items in the cache will be discarded? I've seen the caching configuration settings but I get the impression from the documentation that this is for explicit caching via the Cache object since there is a separate outputCacheSettings which has no memory-related attributes. • Ruby on Rails: How to sanitize a string for SQL when not using find and other built-in methods?

  I'm trying to sanitize a string that involves user input without having to resort to manually crafting my own possibly buggy regex if possible. There are a number of methods in Rails that can allow you to enter in native SQL commands, how do people escape user input for those? The question I'm asking is a broad one, but in my particular case, I'm working with a column in my Postgres database that Rails does not natively understand as far as I know, the tsvector, which holds plain text search information. Rails is able to write and read from it as if it's a string, however, unlike a string, it doesn't seem to be automatically escaping it when I do things like vector= inside the model. For example, when I do model.name='::', where name is a string, it works fine. When I do model.vector='::' it errors out: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid: PGError: ERROR: syntax error in tsvector: "::" "vectors" = E'::' WHERE "id" = 1 This seems to be a problem caused by lack of escaping of the semicolons, and I can manually set the vector='\:\:' fine. I also had the bright idea, maybe I can just call something like: ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute "UPDATE medias SET vectors = ? WHERE id = 1", "::" However, this syntax doesn't work, because the raw SQL commands don't have access to find's method of escaping and inputting strings by using the ? mark. This strikes me as the same problem as calling connection.execute with any type of user input, as it all boils down to sanitizing the strings, but I can't seem to find any way to manually call Rails' SQL string sanitization methods. Can anyone provide any advice?

• Groovlet + Tomcat: "unable to resolve class" when importing libraries

  I'm having some trouble running a groovy servlet (groovlet) in tomcat that imports a library class. When I don't import anything the groovlet works correctly, but if I do import something that I expect to be on the classpath (I can import the same class successfully in a regular servlet), I see the following error: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy java.lang.RuntimeException: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy at groovy.servlet.GroovyServlet$1.call(GroovyServlet.java:123) ... Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.control.MultipleCompilationErrorsException: startup failed, /MyGroovlet.groovy: 1: unable to resolve class com.mycompany.mypackage.MyLibraryClass @ line 1, column 1. The jar containing MyLibraryClass is in shared/lib, which is loaded by tomcat by the following in catalina.properties: shared.loader=...,${catalina.base}/shared/lib/*.jar,... Is there some way that I need to explicitly declare the runtime classpath for GroovyServlet? I've tried moving the library jar to several places, including WEB-INF/lib and moving the actual MyLibraryClass.class file to WEB-INF/classes, but with no luck.

• Load Ruby on Rails models without loading the entire framework

  I'm looking to create a custom daemon that will run various database tasks such as delaying mailings and user notifications (each notice is a separate row in the notifications table). I don't want to use script/runner or rake to do these tasks because it is possible that some of the tasks only require the create of one or two database rows or thousands of rows depending on the task. I don't want the overhead of launching a ruby process or loading the entire rails framework for each operation. I plan to keep this daemon in memory full time. To create this daemon I would like to use my models from my ruby on rails application. I have a number of rails plugins such as acts_as_tree and AASM that I will need loaded if I where to use the models. Some of the plugins I need to load are custom hacks on ActiveRecord::Base that I've created. (I am willing to accept removing or recoding some of the plugins if they need components from other parts of rails.) My questions are Is this a good idea? And - Is this possible to do in a way that doesn't have me manually including each file in my models and plugins? If not a good idea What is a good alternative? (I am not apposed to doing writing my own SQL queries but I would have to add database constraints and a separate user for the daemon to prevent any stupid accidents. Given my lack of familiarity with configuring a database, I would like to use active record as a crutch.)

• How do I POST/GET from rails to API with Nestful?

  Hi, this is a pretty basic question but I'm not entirely clear how to do this. I am trying to use a third-party service that has web-based service. The service is called Postful. But I'm not clear what exactly to do? I've looked at ActiveResource (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveResource/Base.html) and rest-client, but I'm still not clear exactly what steps, code, and files to create.   I'm running windows 7 64-bit and iis7. I'm trying to setup a web application that was previously in iis6 on XP. It's giving me the error below. I've added the network service user to the Performance Monitor Users group to no avail. Access to the registry key 'Global' is denied. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'Global' is denied. ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via , the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user. To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. • Rspec stubing view for anonymous controller

  I'm trying to test a method on the application controller that will be used as a before filter. To do this I have setup an anonymous controller in my test with the before filter applied to ensure that it functions correctly. The test currently looks like this: describe ApplicationController do controller do before_filter :authenticated def index end end describe "user authenticated" do let(:session_id){"session_id"} let(:user){OpenStruct.new(:email => "[email protected]", :name => "Colin Gemmell")} before do request.cookies[:session_id] = session_id UserSession.stub!(:find).with(session_id).and_return(user) get :index end it { should assign_to(:user){user} } end end And the application controller is like this: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base protect_from_forgery def authenticated @user = nil end end My problem is when ever I run the test I'm getting the following error 1) ApplicationController user authenticated Failure/Error: get :index ActionView::MissingTemplate: Missing template stub_resources/index with {:handlers=>[:erb, :rjs, :builder, :rhtml, :rxml, :haml], :formats=>[:html], :locale=>[:en, :en]} in view paths "#<RSpec::Rails::ViewRendering::PathSetDelegatorResolver:0x984f310>" According to the docs the view is not rendered when running controller tests however this points to no stub existing for this action (which is understandable as the view doesn't exist) Anyone have a clue how to solve this problem or stub the view out. • Mouse bugginess - SWFObject, Firefox 3 for Mac, and Flash

  I'm pulling my hair out over a problem I'm encountering on Firefox 3.5 & 3.6 on OS X. I'm using SWFobject to embed an AmMap of the US, which has rollover tooltips for various states. The rollovers are working fine in every other browser I've tested, but they're very buggy on FF for Mac--most of the time they don't show up at all, but if I persistently click a state that's supposed to have a hover event, I might catch a glimpse of the tooltip. Here's the code for the SWFObject embed (incidentally, this isn't being done in the document head due to templating reasons). The reason that the SWFObject initialization is wrapped in Jquery's document.ready handler is that the swf wasn't even appearing in FF 3.5.9 for mac until I added that in: $(document).ready(function() { var params = { quality: "high", scale: "noscale", allowscriptaccess: "always", allowfullscreen: "true", bgcolor: "#FFFFFF", base:"/<?php print LANG . • Why do you have to explicitly specify scope with friendly_id?

  I'm using the friendly_id gem. I also have my routes nested: # config/routes.rb map.resources :users do |user| user.resources :events end So I have URLs like /users/nfm/events/birthday-2009. In my models, I want the event title to be scoped to the username, so that both nfm and mrmagoo can have events birthday-2009 without them being slugged. # app/models/event.rb def Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_friendly_id :title, :use_slug => true, :scope => :user belongs_to :user ... end I'm also using has_friendly_id :username in my User model. However, in my controller, I'm only pulling out events pertinent to the user who is logged in (current_user): def EventsController < ApplicationController def show @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id]) end ... end This doesn't work; I get the error ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound; expected scope but got none. # This works @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => 'nfm') # This doesn't work, even though User has_friendly_id, so current_user.to_param _should_ return "nfm" @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => current_user) # But this does work! @event = current_user.events.find(params[:id], :scope => current_user.to_param) SO, why do I need to explicitly specify :scope if I'm restricting it to current_user.events anyway?   I'm building an email system that stores my different emails in the database and calls the appropriate "deliver_" method via method_missing (since I can't explicitly declare methods since they're user-generated). My problem is that my rails app still tries to render the template for whatever the generated email is, though those templates don't exist. I want to force all emails to use the same template (views/test_email.html.haml), which will be setup to draw their formatting from my database records. How can I accomplish this? • Problem with Unit testing of ASP.NET project (NullReferenceException when running the test)

  Hi, I'm trying to create a bunch of MS visual studio unit tests for my n-tiered web app but for some reason I can't run those tests and I get the following error - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" What I'm trying to do is testing of my data access layer where I use LINQ data context class to execute a certain function and return a result,however during the debugging process I found out that all the tests fail as soon as they get to the LINQ data context class and it has something to do with the connection string but I cant figure out what is the problem. UPDATE: Finally I've fixed this!!!!:) I dont know why but for some reasons in the app.config file the connection to my database was as follows: AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF So what I did is I just changed the path and instead of |DataDirectory| I put the actual path where my MDF file sits,i.e C:\Users\1\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\EICWebSystem\EICWebSystem\App_Data\EICDatabase.mdf After I had done that it worked out!But still it's a bit not clear what was the problem...probably incorrect path to the database?My web.config of ASP.NET project contains the |DataDirectory|\EICDatabase.MDF path though..

• mercurial: how to synchronize mq patches from a master repo as mq patches to a set of clone repos

  I have to run a dozen of different build tests on a code base maintained in a mercurial repository. I don't want to run serially these tests on same repository because they modify a set of common files and I want to run them in parallel on different machines. Also, after all tests are run I want to have access to latest test results from those test work areas. Currently I'm cloning the master repository a dozen of times and run in each clone one different test. Before each test execution I do a pull/update/purge preparation sequence in order to start the test on latest clean state. That's good for me. I'm also preparing new changes using mq extension that I would test on all clones as above before committing them. For testing some ready candidate mq patches I want somehow to deploy/synchronize them to be available in test clones and apply those ready for testing using some guard before running the test. Did anybody do this synchronization before? What's the most simple way to do it? Do I need to have versioned mq patches for that?

• Grails 1.2.0 not finding plugins in the default repository.

  I do not know what changed in my environment, but all of a sudden I can not pull any plugins from the default repository. I went through the _*.groovy scripts and nothing has changed in my grails home directory and it appears that the default repository url is set correctly (DEFAULT_PLUGIN_DIST = "http://plugins.grails.org"). I am assuming it is an environment setting that changed on me, because if I switch to an old version of grails that I have installed, 1.1.1 for example, list-plugins is returning a full list of plugins.   I'm downloaded WIPmania's worldip table from http://www.wipmania.com/en/base/ -- the table has 3 fields and around 79k rows: startip // example: 3363110912 endip // example: 3363112063 country // example: AR (Argentina) So, lets suppose i'm in Argentina and my IP address is: 200.117.248.17 1) I use this function to convert my ip to long function ip_address_to_number($ip) { if(!$ip) { return false; } else { $ip = split('\.',$ip); return($ip[0]*16777216 + $ip[1]*65536 + $ip[2]*256 + $ip[3]); } } 2) I search for the proper country code by matching the long converted ip: $sql = 'SELECT * FROM worldip WHERE '.ip_address_to_number($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']).' BETWEEN startip AND endip'; which is equivalent to: SELECT country FROM worldip WHERE 3363174417 BETWEEN startip AND endip (benchmark: Showing rows 0 - 0 (1 total, Query took 0.2109 sec)) Now comes the real question. What if another bunch of argentinian guys also open the website and they all have these ip addresses: 200.117.248.17 200.117.233.10 200.117.241.88 200.117.159.24 Since i'm caching all the sql queries; instead of matching EACH of the ip queries in the database, would it be better (and right) just to match the 2 first sections of the ip by modifying the function like this? function ip_address_to_number($ip) { if(!$ip) { return false; } else { $ip = split('\.',$ip); return($ip[0]*16777216 + $ip[1]*65536); } } (notice that the 3rd and 4th splitted values of the IP have been removed). That way instead of querying these 4 values: 3363174417 3363170570 3363172696 3363151640 ...all i have to query is: 3363110912 (which is 200.117.0.0 converted to long). • UnicodeDecodeError on attempt to save file through django default filebased backend

  When i attempt to add a file with russian symbols in name to the model instance through default instance.file_field.save method, i get an UnicodeDecodeError (ascii decoding error, not in range (128) from the storage backend (stacktrace ended on os.exist). If i write this file through default python file open/write all goes right. All filenames in utf-8.
