• Couldn't make Angry birds to work on wine

  I could run Notepad++ easily but I fail to run the Angry bird exe. Whenever I open the exe, I see one of my screen flickrs a bit (as lines and not the whole screen) and nothing happens. Any ideas? • Troubleshooting inconsistent ODBC connectivity

  I'm attempting to integrate UPS WorldShip with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database but the connection is very inconsistent. UPS claims this is a DSN/Windows problem and I have not been able to convince them otherwise. The integration is quite simple: my shipping guy clicks a button which opens a form where he enters an order #. After pressing enter the shipping information will be pulled from the database for that order #. The problem is that WorldShip often times thinks the DSN does not exist. However, I am able to open WorldShip's customization tool and browse all the tables and fields in the database my DSN is connected to which means at the very least my DSN does, in fact, exist. The reason this has been so difficult to troubleshoot is because there is no consistency to the problem and I'm not able to reliably repeat any behavior. That is to say that rebooting the PC doesn't cause the connection to break and opening the integration tool and viewing the tables and fields doesn't cause the integration button to work. Is there some way for me to monitor this connection from the SQL server or get any clues as to why it fails? As requested by TallTed here is a sample of the trace file I created. After a mere 5 hours the trace file was over 130MB so there's no way I could provide it in its entirety. • Responding to Invites

  Following up from my post about Sending Outlook Invites here is a shorter one on how to respond. Whatever your choice (ACCEPT, TENTATIVE, DECLINE), if the sender has not unchecked the "Request Response" option, then send your response. Always send your response. Even if you think the sender made a mistake in keeping it on, send your response. Seriously, not responding is plain rude. If you knew about the meeting, and you are happy investing your time in it, and the time and location work for you, and there is an implicit/explicit agenda, then ACCEPT and send it. If one or more of those things don't work for you then you have a few options. Send a DECLINE explaining why. Reply with email to ask for further details or for a change to be made. If you don’t receive a response to your email, send a DECLINE when you've waited enough. Send a TENTATIVE if you haven't made up your mind yet. Hint: if they really require you there, they'll respond asking "why tentative" and you have a discussion about it. When you deem appropriate, instead of the options above, you can also use the counter propose feature of Outlook but IMO that feature has questionable interaction model and UI (on both sender and recipient) so many people get confused by it. BTW, two of my outlook rules are relevant to invites. The first one auto-marks as read the ACCEPT responses if there is no comment in the body of the accept (I check later who has accepted and who hasn't via the "Tracking" button of the invite). I don’t have a rule for the DECLINE and TENTATIVE cause typically I follow up with folks that send those.   The second rule ensures that all Invites go to a specific folder. That is the first folder I see when I triage email. It is also the only folder which I have configured to show a count of all items inside it, rather than the unread count - when sending a response to an invite the item disappears from the folder and hence it is empty and not nagging me. • View Docs and PDFs Directly in Google Chrome

  Would you like to view documents, presentations, and PDFs directly in Google Chrome?  Here’s a handy extension that makes Google Docs your default online viewer so don’t have to download the file first. Getting Started By default, when you come across a PDF or other common document file online in Google Chrome, you’ll have to download the file and open it in a separate application. It’d be much easier to simply view online documents directly in Chrome.  To do this, head over to the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer page on the Chrome Extensions site (link below), and click Install to add it to your browser. Click Install to confirm that you want to install this extension. Extensions don’t run by default in Incognito mode, so if you’d like to always view documents directly in Chrome, open the Extensions page and check Allow this extension to run in incognito. Now, when you click a link for a document online, such as a .docx file from Word, it will open in the Google Docs viewer. These documents usually render in their original full-quality.  You can zoom in and out to see exactly what you want, or search within the document.  Or, if it doesn’t look correct, you can click the Download link in the top left to save the original document to your computer and open it in Office.   Even complex PDF render very nicely.  Do note that Docs will keep downloading the document as you’re reading it, so if you jump to the middle of a document it may look blurry at first but will quickly clear up. You can even view famous presentations online without opening them in PowerPoint.  Note that this will only display the slides themselves, but if you’re looking for information you likely don’t need the slideshow effects anyway.   Adobe Reader Conflicts If you already have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on your computer, PDF files may open with the Adobe plugin.  If you’d prefer to read your PDFs with the Docs PDF Viewer, then you need to disable the Adobe plugin.  Enter the following in your Address Bar to open your Chrome Plugins page: chrome://plugins/ and then click Disable underneath the Adobe Acrobat plugin. Now your PDFs will always open with the Docs viewer instead. Performance Who hasn’t been frustrated by clicking a link to a PDF file, only to have your browser pause for several minutes while Adobe Reader struggles to download and display the file?  Google Chrome’s default behavior of simply downloading the files and letting you open them is hardly more helpful.  This extension takes away both of these problems, since it renders the documents on Google’s servers.  Most documents opened fairly quickly in our tests, and we were able to read large PDFs only seconds after clicking their link.  Also, the Google Docs viewer rendered the documents much better than the HTML version in Google’s cache. Google Docs did seem to have problem on some files, and we saw error messages on several documents we tried to open.  If you encounter this, click the Download link in the top left corner to download the file and view it from your desktop instead. Conclusion Google Docs has improved over the years, and now it offers fairly good rendering even on more complex documents.  This extension can make your browsing easier, and help documents and PDFs feel more like part of the Internet.  And, since the documents are rendered on Google’s servers, it’s often faster to preview large files than to download them to your computer. • VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. You must be familiar with it if you have done some deployments from visual studio. • Logging Timeout'd Request in Apache 2.X

  Hello, I am migrating some applications from Apache 1.3 to 2.2. We used to run some tests where attacker opens some HTTP connection to our server, and do nothing. Apache 1.3 would log the following 408 code, for example: 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 126.1.86.85 - - [01/Dec/2010:06:26:19 +0000] "-" 408 - "-" 0 But with Apache 2.2, nothing is logged to the log file. I run the same test by using netcat to open the connection: $ nc IP_victim PORT_victim $ nc 10.42.37.3 80 I would like to have Apache 2.2 log the same 408 code to the log file, so that we would know of attempted DoS attack from the outside. Do I need any more configuration in Apache 2 to enable this? I have tried some different configurations such as LogLevel = Debug, Timeout 30, RequestReadTimeout header=10 body=30. Thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to install mailman + postfix + apache2 on a VPS running Ubuntu 8.10. I think I got it all according to the official Ubuntu docs. I'm getting this error though when trying to access mailman's admin page.   Do you have a Google Reader account and need a quick simple way to subscribe to new RSS feeds while you browse? Then you will definitely want to have a look at the Chrome Reader extension for Chrome. Before If you want to add a new feed to your Google Reader account in Chrome then you have to do it manually. A single feed now and then is not a problem but if you are wanting to build a serious set of RSS feeds quickly then not so good. Chrome Reader in Action Once the extension is installed you are ready to go. Any time that you visit a webpage with an RSS feed available you will see the familiar orange feed icon appear in your “Address Bar”. To add the feed to your Google Reader account just click on the orange feed icon. Note: You will need to be logged into your Google Reader account in your browser. When you click on the orange feed icon a small drop-down window will appear where you can modify the feed name and/or add it to a “custom folder” if desired. Notice that the orange feed icon has changed to the familiar Google Reader icon indicating that the feed has been added to the account. • MOSS2007 tries to use ActiveDirectory when I have configured an alternative membership provider

  I've got a MOSS site that I am trying to configure using Forms authentication and absolutely any kind of membership provider whatsoever. Thus far ActiveDirectory has proved obstructively difficult so I've just whipped up a simple stub membership provider and put it in the GAC. It's a very basic and simple provider but it works fine with an ASP.Net site, I just can't make it work with Sharepoint. I've made sure I reset IIS and even restarted the server to see if either of those helped but they made no difference.

  hi all, yesterday on a computer of a friend a strange thing happened. after booting the ports fo http, https and ftp are closed but e-mail is still working. in the control panel the windows firewall seems active even if he tries to deactivate it. i have a suspision that it is the faul of norton internet security 2010, we have tried to uninstall it, but the uninstallation did not work. when using the removal tool from symantec it just goes to 23% and then it crashes. the process ccSvcHst.exe is still running. how can i safeley remove the rest of norton internet security? thanks in advance [edit] norton internet security 2010 is sucesfully removed, but still no connectivity

  So tonight this convo happened: Intrigued, I viewed the video Lee mentions and found that its the now infamous Brent Ozar video which shows a bug in Word on the Surface RT (you can read this article which talks about the tempest in a teacup that ensued). But Lee is correct – in the video, when Brent starts up Word 2013, we see this: That sure does look like a desktop doesn’t it! But…aren’t Windows RT devices *not* supposed to come with a desktop? Actually, it does. However, it’s not a *full* desktop. From Seth Rosenblatt’s fantastic Windows RT FAQ article: Windows RT will have a Desktop mode, but it will be restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software. This will include touch-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote as the new Microsoft Office So yes, there’s a desktop mode in Windows RT but no, you won’t be able to install apps to it.   The portable libraries are the  response to the growing profile fragmentation in .NET frameworks. With help of portable libraries you can share code between different runtimes without dreadful #ifdef PLATFORM statements or even worse “Add as Link” source file sharing practices. If you have an existing .net class library which you would like to reference from a different runtime (e.g. you have a .NET Framework 4.5 library which you would like to reference from a Windows Store project), you can either create a new portable class library and move the classes there or edit the existing .csproj file and change the XML directly. The following example shows how to convert a .NET Framework 4.5 library to a Portable Class Library.   I have been advise by Commvault partner support to turn off the backup of the master database as the backup failed due to the log file being lock. The following is the advise given: "The message is caused by Commvault’s inability to backup the master database’s transaction log. If this is happening intermittently its possible that something is locking the transaction log, preventing SQL iData agent from accessing the log. • How do I stop XNA/Visual Studio from rebuilding my content project every time I build?

  My group and I are working on a game in XNA 4.0 with Visual Studio 2010/2012. The main solution has 6 projects: 2 XNA game projects (1 executable/ 1 class library), 1 WPF executable for the level editor, 2 standard class libraries, and a content project. Originally, the editor and engine XNA game projects had a content reference to separate content projects. Recently, I consolidated the content projects into one to simplify asset additions. Since pushing these changes to our git repo, certain members of my group have been experiencing weird build issues. Every time they run the project, they have to re-build all of the assets. This happens regardless of whether any changes were made, even if they just run the project directly after building. I've taken a few steps to figure out why this is happening. Below is the MSBuild output set on Normal verbosity.
