• How can I create a dynamic site that is still search-bot friendly?

  If I want to have a slide effect between pages. You click a link, it is loaded off to the side and then slides in (pushing the old page off the other side). I can imagine using jQuery to do the PHP and the effects... but how do I do something like this that gracefully degrades for users without Javascript, including bots? Possibly more problematic: what if I wanted to have a sort of mural background across the site, perhaps with a parallax scrolling effect, and sliding to other pages reveals more of the, possibly giant image? Again, I can imagine how to do this with lots of fancy jQuery and PHP but it would heavily rely on those. How can I gracefully degrade in a situation like that? Any pointers, articles or books would be greatly appreciated. I keep trying to search for answers but I just get a lot of "theory"-based, unhelpful blogs.

• Handling buildings in isometric tile based games

  A simple question, to which i couldn't find a definitive answer - how to manage buildings on a tiled map? Should the building be sliced in to tiles or one big image? EDIT: The game is being built from scratch using C++/SDL 2.0, it will be a turn based strategy, something like Fallout 1 & 2 without the hex grid, a simple square grid, where the Y axis is squished by 50%. Buildings can span multiple tiles, the characters move tile by tile. For now, the terrain is completely flat. Some basic functionality is in place, so I'm aiming to advancing the terrain and levels them selves - adding buildings, gates, cliffs, not sure about the elevation.

It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. Examples are video processing, image processing, and all kinds of signal processing, in general. The goals are to document, and to teach the optimization techniques, so that the code does not become unmaintainable and prone to removal by newer developers. (*) (*) Notwithstanding the possibility that the particular optimization is completely useless in some unforeseeable future CPUs, such that the code will be deleted anyway. Considering that software offerings (commercial or open-source) retain their competitive advantage by having the fastest code and making use of the newest CPU architecture, software writers often need to tweak their code to make it run faster while getting the same output for a certain task, whlist tolerating a small amount of rounding errors.   I have a school project to build an AI for a 2D racing game in which it will compete with several other AIs (no collision). We are given a black and white bitmap image of the racing track, we are allowed to choose basic stats for our car (handling, acceleration, max speed and brakes) after we receive the map. The AI connects to the game's server and gives to it several times a second numbers for the current acceleration and steering. The language I chose is C++, by the way. The questions are: What is the best strategy or algorithm (since I want to try and win)? • Booting 11.10 from USB stick on MacBook Pro 5,1 fails

  I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

  I've borrowed this laptop from a friend. I wanted to install AdBlock to boost performance. First weird thing was that even though I was on Chrome, Chrome suggested me installing him? So I tried to install ,than it gave me some message about broken dependencies. I Googled and tried to run those commands you guys were suggesting, but than it popped up error messages about everything again. Than I found out that some package called linux image generic is broken, than I tried to find an answer to that, but on the topic it was ” ndk.bhj\spo;ujvsdljvaEOYUFgidgAPIF;hsgvk in other words, I didn't understand anything about it, than there's this thing: E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? Seriously, when I'm trying to fix an error, there is another one. I'm on something called GNOME. Sooo, where do I start?

• GWT (Google Web Toolkit) Designer not working on Ubuntu 12.10

  The GWT Desinger is not working on Ubuntu 12.10. It worked on Ubuntu 12.04. I installed the Eclipse Plugin as described on the GWT Homepate If I want to open the Design-View (for an xml-GWT-File), Eclipse crashes (prompt closing of the application). I found this two workarounds for which are for 12.04 (but on 12.04 i did not need this to get it working - it worked out of the box for me). I tried them on my 12.10 Ubuntu but they are not working. But I have to say that I can't find the "Use WebKit for rendering GWT UI (if available)"-Flag. What can I do to get the GWT Designer working? I tested it successfully again on a 12.04 Ubuntu VMware image. If I don't get a solution, I have to downgrade my Ubuntu to 12.04 again.

• Workspeace view shows first workspaces out of border at left

  I am using nvidia-current and edited from settings my monitors so that my second monitor is at left and unity-panel shows only in my main monitor. How ever now the workspaces images have shifted so that second monitor first workpsaces are moved out of the left border and when the monitor is not turn on I can't see the the workspaces there. Sometimes programs have been moved when monitor is been flashed to the workspace shown in out of border and I have no means to move the program windows into my main workspace views. • How do I create and link to a database in ASP.NET (Razor) with Visual studio 2013?

  We have a simple web app, part of which allows users to create accounts and then, hopefully soon, to write blog posts. The user log in system is working great, it utilizes the given .sdf database created when a new project is created. We would like to expand it now to allow for blog data (the title, body of the blog, image posts perhaps, etc). However, I'm unsure of how to add another table to the user database for this purpose - or if that would even be best since it has sensitive information in it. I've been reading blog post after blog post and still can't find anything current on this. All of the articles are for MVC projects or older versions of VS. If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated!

• Remove dropped shadown in nemo previews

  I recently started using Nemo because Nautilus has gotten pretty terrible. I quite like it, but one thing is still bugging me: the shadow of the preview of every image and video file (see below). I've been looking around in the /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/nemo.css file but couldn't figure out how to get rid of that shadow. In Nautilus you get a border instead of a shadow, so surely something is different. I just can't figure out what. Any ideas?

• Can you shade a specific section of a sprite? If so, how? [Java]

  I have been working on an isometric minecraft-esque game engine for a strategy game I plan on making. As you can see, it really needs some sort of shading. It is difficult to distinguish between separate elevations when the camera is facing away from the slope because everything is the same shade. So my question is: can I shade just a specific section of a sprite? All of those blocks are just sprites, so if I shaded the entire image, it would shade the whole block. I am using LWJGL.   When a vendor declares that they no longer intend to provide any support or services to a piece of software (and stated the intent to exit the business - offering no upgrade paths), and stated that customers must pay a nominal fee in order to have the existing data exported, what kind of recourse do programmers/customers have? Things I can think of: Need to purchase spare hardware and set up a spare environment on which the software can continue to operate. Various data export methods which do not require vendor involvement. (For example, screen scraping, printing to image followed by re-scanning, etc) Parallel systems where staff will duplicate the old data into a new system manually or semi-automatically Legal means, in case the vendor is in financial trouble Any other ideas? Assuming that there is no "circumvention" involved (no DRM, no DMCA), is data recovery or reverse engineering legal/acceptable?

But I am researching how to have the following features when taking screen shots of the selected area: (1) The final output should be automatically saved to a location, for example on the desktop.   I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 formating the HDD. Any time that I turn on the PC and boot Ubuntu, it always analyzes my HDD in search for bad blocks. This is what happens: When I turn on the PC and load Ubuntu, before I can login my user, appears the following image. If I press C, the process ends and I can work, if I wait until the process can finish by itself also I can work. Also I had this problem, related to the HDD. My Hard Disk Driver is a Western Digital. The thing is - is it better to do as many short-lived projects/research work on diverse topics of computer science or stick to one/two projects consistently throughout my undergraduate years? Case in point: currently working on an image-processing project that promises to carry on for a year or so (as per the prof). Does this seem like being over-specialized at too early a level? Although taking on too many things will spread me out thin and in all probability not end up getting any meaningful work done. Especially as I hope to apply for grad school in the US. Would really appreciate any views and suggestions on this.

• Is medium-resolution a good middle ground for web images?

  I'm used to thinking of hi-res 300 ppi and above, and lo-res, 72 or 96. But today I got an image that was 240 ppi, and da boss wanted as high res as possible. It was a huge file, but when I resized down to 700px wide in PS, optimized jpeg with no compression, without changing the res the result was a 129KB file that looks decent on most browsers (at least my box...who knows about old monitors, etc.) Did I miss a conference when I was on a break? Are others doing medium-res?
